A first-person travel vlog by Nate and Kara Buchanan documenting day 3 in Patagonia (Ushuaia). The hosts travel with guide Frasco and driver Esteban: canoeing/kayaking down the Lassi Fasak River into the Beagle Channel, transferring by motorboat, visiting Gable Island (lunch, 2–2.5 hour hike, cliffs overlooking McKinley passage), touring a historic estancia (55,000 acres; main house dates to 1855), and encountering wildlife and local curiosities (penguins, whale vertebra). The tone is enthusiastic and observational.

Call me.
It is our second day in Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, and our second day of adventures with Southern explorations.
Today we're going to be going on boats, seeing penguins, visiting one of the most famous ranches in all of path Patagonia, and doing some more scenic hiking.
It is another gorgeous day and from what we've heard, this is very rare to have two beautiful sunny days in a row. So I am so excited about today.
Today we're going to be driving east most of the time. Actually, the place where we're going, it's about 30 miles going straight line east. Once we finish the canoeing, we're going to arrive to a place called Fish Port. And that's a place where we can disembark and a boat can pick us up. And this is the motorboat. It's a semi rigid boat. It's covered. That will take us to these two different islands we're gonna visit today.
We have about an hour drive to our first destination today, but we're making a little stop at this lookout. And we have a new guide today. His name is Frasco.
We're almost to the Harfordon Ranch, but we just stopped because there's wild horses. I can't believe how close we are.
About to go canoeing again.
We are all suited up. We got our paddles slightly chillier than yesterday, hence the puffy jacket. I think it's gonna be fun. Looks like there's a little more current today. We'll just be floating instead of.
I'm wearing a lot more clothes than I was yesterday on our canoe trip. It's a bit windy here. Just taking precautions.
We're gonna depart from this river. This is the Lassi Fasak River. It's one of the longest river we have in this Bali area. In Tierralpo in the mountain, we're gonna do the last part of the river into the Beagle Channel. One, two, three.
Woohoo.
Okay, walking inside the canoe. Okay.
We just finished kayaking down the river. We are now in the Beagle Channel and a motorboat is here to pick us up to take us to Penguin Island.
The motorboat got here like as soon as we did. It was like perfect timing. All of the guides have little walkie talkies that they talk to each other on. And I think it's so that when the group ahead of you leaves, that's when you know it's okay to go. So it's like everywhere we go, we're.
The only ones pretty much have The Beagle Channel all to ourselves.
Sam.
This is awesome. We just got to Gable island where we'll be the rest of the day. First, we're going to eat lunch in this shelter. Then we're going on a hike.
Over here. And the place where we are today is right here, Gable Island. It's a big island on the middle of the Beagle Channel. That's where we are right now. Okay. We drove all the road three and then the J road back to the channel. Our destination now will be to cross the island from north to south, not a straight line. We're gonna be walking here through the forest. Then we're gonna go a little bit west into some cliff in this area to have a nice view of the McKinley passage. And then from there, we're gonna hike around this inside bay and finish here.
Once again, lunch was absolutely delicious. The craziest thing happened. They brought out a plate of cherry pond because the first day that we are here, our driver, Esteban, told us that he might try to get it for us because we told him how much we loved it. And he did. And we had the best cherry pond ever. We got to share it with all of our new friends. It was so great. And now we're gonna go on a hike that'll last about two and a half hours before we go back home.
The sun has come out, and all of a sudden there are blue skies and it's super warm for our hike. It's totally different than yesterday. It's like this big open field across this island. It's going to be awesome.
We're on the south side of the island right now.
You can slide down.
No, please don't. The idea will be to walk down there to the grass and take a nice break there. Maybe 10, 15 minutes.
Okay.
You did it this time.
I did. I'm hoping. I.
Just got to the main part of the estancia. We've technically been on the ranch the whole time. It's 55,000 acres. And the original family that settled here still lives here. It's the same families as the fourth generation. And this house dates back to 1855. Apparently, they shipped it in parts from England until it was this whole house.
It has been such an awesome day. We are two days in Patagonia is not disappointing. And now we have about an hour and a half ride back to Ushuaia.
No way. Okay. The vlog is not over yet because we just came across this wood whale bone. It is a vertebrae of a whale, like his spine, something. And it's this big. And I'm pretty sure the rest of his bones are over there. I am amazed right now.
This is the happiest dog I've ever seen.
Hey, buddy, did you want to be on the vlog? Me?
I like that one.
That.
Together. Okay.
Oh, I had it. Okay, let me try again. Ready? Yeah. Yeah.
We're not losing her this time.
Oh, gosh.
You want your mind really to be blown?
Yeah.
Stay right there. I'll blow it. No, those are bones.
No. Yes.
Some type of bone.
This is crazy.
All right, we gotta get.
Yeah, it is.
