POOP COFFEE & RICE TERRACES | Last Day in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia

A travel vlog by Nate and Kara Buchanan in Ubud, Bali documenting their last day with friends Christian and Kati. They visit rice terraces (briefly, having missed sunrise), explore a bamboo house and nearby ponds, ride scooters, eat a renowned suckling pig lunch at a restaurant called Ibioka, and try local "luwak" (so-called 'poop') coffee where the civet ferments beans in its gut before collection and roasting. The vlog also mentions skipping the Monkey Forest due to a monkey-bite/rabies anecdote, returns to Canggu, and concludes with the couple undecided on remaining travel plans. An early announcement promotes Kara's online vlog-editing course and the "Paradise Pack" limited offer.

Okay, vlog ready. Go.
My first cup of poop coffee.
Good morning from our beautiful bamboo house in Ubud. Unfortunately, it's our last day here with Christian and Kati, and we're going on one last adventure.
We're about to hop on the scooters and head north to some rice fields called.
What's the name of the rice fields that we're going to? Oh, you want me to try it? The Galalang. The Galala.
I think we all have our scooter black belts now. Every time we make it through there, I give myself a little pat in the back.
We were considering getting here at sunrise.
Just missed it.
Well, at least you're not wearing sneakers.
You can wash it off.
I feel very like one with Bali now.
Yeah.
One with the earth.
My feet were a little hot, so I thought I'd just take a little dip in this little pond right here.
Not a bad call.
It's natural sunscreen as well.
Yeah.
Exfoliating. Exfoliating.
Like, I'm thinking. I'm thinking about getting one of these. I feel like my whole body shade. It's almost like wearing an umbrella on your head.
And it's great for pictures because you don't have harsh shadows in your face. Face.
Yep. For the ground. Coming from the pro.
We are not done exploring the rice fields yet, but Christian and Kati have to go, so we're saying goodbye to them. But I wanted to make sure everybody knows that Kati has an English channel now, so you can definitely follow that. And Christian actually just moved to Bali, and he's doing really cool guides, like, full everything you need to know about Bali. He's working on that one here, and he has some in a few other Asian countries.
Yeah, Philippines, Thailand, Peru. My goal is to build them for every Southeast Asian country this year. So just like you guys, you guys.
Got to be on the move.
So do I. I got to start moving a little more.
He's pro.
See you guys in a few hours. All the way in Changu. I know. Oh, you got left hanging real bad there.
Sorry, Nate.
Bye, guys.
I've been feeling so small Watch the clock ticking off the wall but tonight I'm letting it go.
Spend my coin for sure I'm gonna be myself Or I could be someone else no one stopping now I'm gonna skip my breaks I'm gonna make mistakes I just want to feel alive.
It'S just what I do when I'm out.
I love this. This guy to my right over here is advertising his swing. So he's just swinging back and forth and going wee woo.
Woo.
You tell myself sweating. Right now we're about to head back to our villa, so we are trading our hats for our helmets because we have to get back to check out. But if you do come and it's this hot, probably worth getting up for sunrise. And I'm sure the rice terrace would just be absolutely beautiful in the morning. Fewer people, beautiful light. Right? But now let's go back to the villa film because needs to navigate. So we're going to transport. Teleport. We're going to. We're going to teleport. We're also transporting, but teleporting is what I meant.
Nothing can break me no, no Nothing can break me.
We could not resist coming back to our bamboo house and having one less swim in this pool. This place has been fantastic. So we'll definitely link this Airbnb in the description. Also, we'll have another link there for if you've never used Airbnb before, if you sign up through that Link, you'll get $40 off your first day and we'll get some money. Win, win. Now we're going to eat. Thank you so much.
Sad to leave this place, but I'm hungry, so. In case you were wondering how we've been transporting our stuff for the last couple days, we actually left our big bags at our hotel back in Canggu. And we've paired our lives down into these small backpacks, which is quite challenging when you have a lot of electronics. My backpack has been sitting here in between my legs, which is actually a lot more comfortable than I thought it would be. And Kara has been carrying hers on her back. I don't want to jinx us, but we only have to survive this treacherous exit one last time.
Focus on the road. Don't think about the video.
Certain death to the left.
We made it.
I'm just glad we survived so we can go eat. So for lunch, we've come to a place called Ibioka. And this place is known for their suckling pig. So they cook a pool pig and then you get different cuts of the meat. We wanted to have this when we came to Bali, and when we were telling people about it, everybody told us we had to come here to ubud and have it at this restaurant. I think they actually have three different locations. I've ordered the complete meat set. I see some pork rinds on top. So, like, fried. Fried pork skin. Then we have some of the white pork meat with some kind of sauce on top of it. And then, honestly, I'm not really sure what this is. It's like some kind of pork fritter. And then there's also a piece of what looks like blood sausage.
And we're washing it down with that cold iced coffee. How much did this cost?
That was delicious. If you come to uba, definitely try the suckling pig. But before we leave, there's one more local delicacy that we want to try. Try?
Yeah. Local delicacy.
Oh, it looks very scary.
Okay, so local delicacy here is poof coffee from this thing. This is an animal called a luwak. So this man feeds the luwak, the coffee like berry, because it's very sweet, so it eats off the skin. And then the bean ferments in its stomach. And then he poops it out. And then he told me that they take the poop and they boil it, and then they dry it out. And then they boil it again.
Yes.
And then they dried out again. And then they roast the beans and then blended them right in front of us and did a nice pour over to create my first cup of poop coffee. Kind of looks like a raccoon, a cat, and a possum all at the same time. I'm still not certain what kind of animal it is. Do you think it tastes better than regular coffee?
Yes. You can try.
It's better.
What makes it better? Because they fermented already in the stomach, and then you can get a little bit sour, and then you didn't use the sugar. You can get a little bit sweet. And then very smooth.
Very smooth.
Okay.
It's actually very nice.
Don't worry. Okay. Don't panic. It's organic.
It's organic. Oh, he's so close to me. He doesn't bite, right? No bite, no bite.
All right.
It's definitely smooth.
Yes.
It's probably the least bitter coffee I've ever had, but there's nothing in it. Black coffee, no sugar. I actually really like it. Poop coffee. Feel like it has to be some kind of health benefits to it being poop coffee.
Probably.
Good job, little guy. He made some coffee beans.
In the U.S. this stuff is actually, like, really expensive. Look it up. And I'm pretty sure a bag of it costs, like, more than $50.
I did not know that.
I wanted to wait until I drink the coffee, but I'm actually holding a piece of poop right now. The poop is holding all of the coffee beans together. This is what they boil. Hopefully this is the one that's already been boiled once. And then when they take the beans out, they boil it again. This is the poop? Yeah. Has it been boiled? Okay, this one hasn't been boiled yet.
If you want to come drink poop coffee at the same place we did. It's right across the street from the parking lot of the Monkey forest, which.
Is, like, the number one rated thing to do on TripAdvisor. And we're skipping it mainly because kids, Sarah hates monkeys, but also because on the plane right here, there was a guy who was sitting behind us, and I was just, like, overhearing his conversation. He got bit by one of the monkeys, and he had to fly back to Bangkok to get a rabies shot, and he had to pay $2,000 for that rabies shot.
Like you, they advise you if you ever get bit by a monkey to get a rabies shot because you could die, and you just never know. I'm not doing that. Not doing it.
He said there were 4,000 here. Here in Indonesia. So he flew back to Bangkok to get the shots because that was actually cheaper. Yeah. So skipping the Monkey Forest, I'm sure it's fun. We probably wouldn't have been bit, but.
Poop coffee was fun.
Okay, back to Changu.
We just got back to our exact same hotel that we stayed in the last time we were in Canggu, and we checked in for one night. We're not really sure if we're gonna stay more nights, which is why we're gonna end the vlog here to plan the rest of our time in Bali.
It'll be as much of a surprise for you tomorrow as it is for us right now.
We can't decide if we want to explore a new part of Bali or if we want to dig in a little deeper here.
Really, it's more of, like, if we're too lazy to get up super early in the morning and go a new place or, like, we're loving Canggu. So we're just gonna stay here and hang for a couple more days.
You'll just have to wait and see.
This is a big day. I just feel like we've been in the sun for like, 10 hours.
Definitely burnt.
Good farmer's tan. Yeah.
Probably getting pizza tonight.
Pizza.
Beautiful stars. I want to drive a faster car. I'm going to be myself. I'm going to be someone else. I'm going to.
There's a new swing.
Oh my gosh.
Oh, wow.
The smell of money is in the air. Now everyone builds swings.
I don't think he likes me.
Hey, where you going?
Hey. Hey. That's mine. That's mine.
Uh oh. That one's agile.
I kinda like it. It's such a strange animal.
Ow.
That was supposed to be sweet.
