RESCUED BY STRANGERS! Cappadocia to Izmir, Turkey

Transcript of a YouTube travel vlog (Nate and Kara Buchanan) documenting a travel day in Cappadocia that turns hazardous due to a sudden rain/thunderstorm. They get soaked, worry about missing their shuttle, find shelter, then are picked up by a tour group's van (which they call being 'rescued by strangers'), make their flight, arrive at the airport, and travel onward toward Izmir/Ephesus and their Airbnb.

From Cappadocia. Day two.
I'm pretty sure that I just ran the drone into a rock. The entire camera is just ripped straight off the face of it. Like, I need to dig a little grave for it.
I don't think we've mentioned that today is a travel day, but we're not leaving till 8 o', clock, so we're.
Gonna make the most of the afternoon. We're gonna do a little hiking. There are some very big gray clouds behind it starting to rain. And in the middle of nowhere. Okay, it's starting to rain harder. Oh, yeah, it's really raining now.
Oh, we don't miss our flight.
I think we're supposed to be, like, on the other side of this valley.
Help.
We still have two hours till we're supposed to be back to catch the shuttle to go to the airport. We're just gonna try to wait out the rain.
So I feel like if we go back the way we came, we know exactly where to go and we know how long it's gonna take.
This is our current state of affairs.
Googling. If there's snakes in the valley, definitely.
Blocking all the rain from you. Minus all of it.
Are you serious?
I think we can get down that way.
Really?
Yeah. I think I saw a cave. So we're gonna have to get wet for a minute, but I think we should go.
Okay.
Because it's not dry here.
Okay, let's go.
It's getting worse, and there's nowhere to hide from the rain. Right here. Like, it's just blowing in all directions.
It's getting colder. There's more lightning. Ah, it's so cold. The raindrops are freezing. Oh, I'm so scared.
This is like. This is one of the bigger messes we've got ourselves in, mainly just due to how far away we are.
I just thought about something.
What?
This morning, we were bragging that we hadn't gotten our rain jackets out of our bag in weeks or months. And we feel like it never rains on us. Now this is happening.
I asked you before we left, should I bring my rain jacket? Should I bring the rain cover for the camera? And you're like, no, it's beautiful outside.
Okay.
Still worse. Still worse. It's so cold. It's so cold. And there's nowhere to hide from it.
Cry. Should we make a run for it?
I don't know.
All right, we're making a run for it. Okay, let's make a run for it.
I feel like it's slowing down a little.
Yeah. Okay, let's go.
We're not. We're not just over dramatizing this for the vlog. This is very cold.
Kara might hate being cold more than anybody else I know, but also the camera right now is just shoved back into a little hole in the rock. Oh, wow.
Oh, gosh. I can't. It won't stop.
No.
Relentless.
I like, I think every inch of my body is soaked. Like every inch.
So sad.
Oh, I just know it's running now. It's in my boxers now.
What are we gonna do?
Well, it's gonna stop at some point, right?
Okay, it's slowing. It's slowing.
Make a run for it. Yeah. Okay. We're really making a run for it. Alright, let's do it. Oh, I'm so wet. I'm so wet.
It's like a flood. Yo, it's coming back.
It's coming back.
Go, go, go.
My pants are so wet. I can barely run right now.
Shelter.
Shelter. We found shelter.
Oh, we're dry.
Well, we're not dry. We're not getting water. Let's bust your hat. Thanks.
Oh my gosh. It is so cold.
Also asking if I should bring my sweatshirt.
I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
Oh, my gosh. We have one hour and 20 minutes until our shuttle leaves for the airport.
I have gotten us into quite the mess. At what point does hypothermia fit in? When should we be concerned?
Okay, I think the worst is over. We're gonna try to make our way back now. I would dry the water off the camera but I have nothing dry. So we're trying to go like there ish.
And this is what you call a dead end.
It is not our day today.
What do we do?
I think we go head back in the direction we came from. This is beautiful though. Like, you can't argue with that.
I'm a little over the chimney fairies.
Just.
Okay. With one hour until our shuttle bus leaves, we've found the route. That looks promising. I don't think there's going to be a gorge between us and this road. If we can get to the road, we can get back to our hotel.
We're calculating it's going to take about 45 minutes. Hopefully enough time to put on dry.
Clothes if we're lucky, take a shower.
If we're really lucky. It's not going to start raining again.
We're on a road, a real road.
We're going to make it.
I don't think roads go to the edge of cliff.
Cliff.
So I feel like we're Almost home free. There's a bus.
Okay. According to Google Maps, we should be back in 30 minutes. I think about sticking my thumb out. We've never done that before.
Yeah, I'd do it.
Just guarantee a hot shower. I think I didn't even have my thumb out. And I think this bus is gonna pick us up. Come on.
Are you gonna give us a ride back to town? Yes. Thank you so much. We got stuck in the rainstorm. Get out of Rome.
Is this real?
From the U.S. u.S. Okay.
I'm sorry. I'm getting the van wet.
That's okay. Aye, you make our van wet.
Come on. I'm joking, guys.
I am joking.
I'm joking.
We still had a really long ways to go.
Angels picked us up. Real life Angels.
We're staying right here. Can we get out? Up to you? Yes. Thank you. Here's a. Here's a tip first. You can leave it drier. Okay. Thank you so much. Thank you very much. Thank you. We are not doing it for money. I know, I know. But we appreciate it so much. Thank you. Goodbye, everybody.
Have fun.
We are. You'll be on YouTube. We'll send you our channel. Okay, Bye. Bye.
Wow.
I don't think that can be called our first proper hitchhiking experience because it was a tour group. But that saved us so much time.
Insider travel. So if you search Istanbul Insider Travel specifically Ali go on one of their tours.
They're very nice.
They even gave me a lemon that they got from their lemon place.
Hello. And you should. You should buy a pot from this guy. No, thank you. Thank you, though. Okay. We made it back with, like 35 minutes to spare.
Wow.
I'm taking a shower.
It's like the closest we've ever come to doing a packing video.
We are showered, we are dry, we're in fresh clothes. It's almost like it never even happened. Almost.
Nothing but a good memory at this point.
It's definitely a memory now.
We're just waiting on the shuttle.
And it's here.
Thank you.
All right. Over an hour later, we have arrived at the airport. These shuttle buses are a great deal less than $7. They pick you up at your door, take you straight to the airport.
No lounge.
We deserve these.
Sky is so pretty right now.
In case of pressure loss, oxygen masks will drop from the panel above your feet. In this case, pull the nearest mask towards you, place it over your nose and mouth, adjust the headband and bring. Put on your mask first before helping your child or others. Your right vest is located under your feet. When instructed, remove the vest from the pouch, slip the vest over your head, bring the belt around your waist, and fix the belt until it is tight.
Mag is so much heavier than mine. It is 9:45, but for some reason, it feels like midnight.
Props because we got up before the sunrise two days in a row and we were caught in a thunderstorm today.
We are about to rent a car and drive an hour to Ephesus, which is where we're going to be exploring tomorrow.
I don't even know where we are in the country right now.
I think we're somewhere on, like, the west coast.
West, Southwest.
We just got on a plane and here we are.
All right, there she is.
Oh, it's cute.
45 minutes to our Airbnb.
Turns out our Airbnb host is the nicest man ever. He gave us some apples, tea. We chit chatted. He's been to Nashville because he sells carpet in the U.S. now we're in our room. This super long, crazy day is over. We're gonna get some sleep because we're getting a really early start tomorrow.
Again.
Gosh, I'm just so regretting coming this way. Why didn't we just go back the way we came when it was raining?
That had all the caves, but, like, we knew what?
We had no idea what was up here. Why did we think coming up here was a good idea?
Someone to see the red tower.
It's not even as pretty up here as it was down there.
Yeah, definitely not.
I vote we go back the way we came. Oh, then we gotta go over that sketch.
Thing again when it's wet. It was fall.
But at least we know. Like, we don't even know if this is a loop trail, you know?
Please talk to me.
How old are you?
Huh?
How old are you?
I was trying to clean out my feet. There's all these little rocks, and that puddle looks like it might wash them away.
I'm so happy we made it back to you. I didn't know if we would ever make it back. We're back.
