RIDING CAMELS THROUGH THE SAHARA | MOROCCO

Nate and Kara trek by camel through Morocco's Sahara with local guides Rasheed and Abdul. They share tea with a three-cup ritual (strong like life, sweet like love, weak like death), sandboard down dunes, and watch bread baked underground for ten minutes. The November trip captures sunrise departures, desert picnics, and cool nights.

It is 6:30 in the morning.
We're trekking across the desert to watch the sunrise.
Getting prepared for a day in the desert.
Water. Windy like that, no wind like this. It was a successful first night in the desert. We stayed nice and warm in our tents, and we got up for sunrise this morning.
Kara got out of bed. That's saying a lot.
It was a big deal.
Now we're getting the camels ready because today we are heading into the desert and we're taking the sandboards with us.
I've never ridden a camel.
It's gonna be awesome.
So excited. First, I want to apologize for the audio. I don't know if our camera can handle this kind of wind, but hopefully you can still hear us. And second, I don't know how bouncy camels are. I don't know if all of our.
Footage is gonna through the desert we go.
We're gonna do our best.
Aww.
You know, these flies on his face.
Camels definitely bite.
Really?
Yeah.
Oh, my gosh.
You're up.
That was violent.
Apparently these trees that we're riding through are very poisonous. If the SAP gets in your eyes, it'll make you go blind.
Good to know.
Don't touch your eyes. So the white milky stuff is what will make you go blind? Yeah. Keep that away from me.
Group of donkeys hanging out by the well.
He prefers to stay standing. There we go.
Nice. Thanks, buddy. That wasn't too bad. We getting water for the camels?
They're getting away. We're gonna be stranded in the desert.
You want to try?
You want to try, Matt?
Yeah.
It's arugula. Huh? Arugula.
Arugula. Thank you.
Spicy. Yeah.
Rasheed just picked up some grass off of the desert, and now we're eating.
Found a nice shady spot here in the desert. We're stopping for lunch.
Just stuck like this.
Good job.
Thank you.
It turns out that camels backs aren't as squishy as they look. It's not very comfortable up there, especially when they're going up and down the dunes and they start running and you bounce on them. But I like them. They're cute. Even though I'm scared they're gonna bite me or spit on me.
I really cannot believe how far you can see, and it's just desert and there's like, no one out here, and it's so clean and quiet.
I was talking to Abdul this morning as we were sitting in the tent that was made out of camel wool, and he was telling me that a lot of companies don't come come to this part of the desert, because it's a lot harder to get to. If you're not from here. You'll get lost, because, like, we literally just drove through the desert. That all looked the exact same to me for an hour and a half yesterday. And it's much harder on the car. So a lot of companies don't go here, and they go to a much more touristy part of the desert where there's a lot more people.
I'm really glad he brought us this.
Yeah. This has been awesome. Starting with my new favorite food. Dates and figs and nuts.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
A lot of hard work goes into this tea. Lots of pouring and repouring.
And lots of sugar.
Lunch is served.
We just finished what I think was the best picnic of my life. Chicken skewers and a salad. And we learned about this symbolism with tea and the Saharian people. Your first cup is strong like life. Your second cup is sweet, like love. And your third cup is weak because everyone gets weak, and there's nothing you can do about it, but it's still really good. This is our third cup. Lunch is over.
You're a pro. See ya. Where you going?
So we're here in November, which I guess means it's almost wintertime, and the temperature is absolutely perfect. I'm not hot at all, but I'm comfortable in short sleeves. And then at night, it's a little cool, but it's nice because you can put on the jacket and enjoy the fire. I don't think I've sweated once since I've been in the desert. Agreed. Yeah.
We're breaking the sandboard. Back out.
Short ride.
We just hiked up to the tallest sand dune anywhere around, and this is the most incredible view of my entire life.
Sa.
Good job, buddy. Stretch those legs out.
Yep.
There you go.
We're heading back to camp.
Hey.
Almost bit me.
The camels are getting a little feisty. Kicked out of the line because he was acting up.
What an incredible day. You agree?
Thanks for the ride. Thank you.
I assume that was your welcome. Today has left me with a sore butt that will probably last for a couple days and a memory that'll last a lifetime.
Hey.
Really? It's hump day.
Hump day.
How appropriate. It's Wednesday.
We just finished watching a gorgeous sunset over the sand dunes. And since then, we've been in the kitchen. So I need to brag on Rasheed and Abdul, our two guides that we've been with the last couple of days, they found out that I really liked coffee. And so since we've been here, they've been offering me coffee anytime we have a spare moment, which is just so thoughtful. And I told them that I really like to learn how to cook. And so they made sure the chef Mustafa came and got me before he started making the couscous tonight. So I've been learning all the crazy steps that have to go into making couscous, and it's been so much fun. I just love it here. Rasheed is making bread in the sand. Right now, he's just making the dough.
This is crazy.
And now the bread's under the ground.
I can see it rising.
So welcome to Rashid Bakery.
It only took, like, 10 minutes underground. I'm a little scared. It's gonna be sandy.
I haven't tasted any sand yet. That is so crazy. He said, when you grow up in the Sahara desert, you have to know how to do this.
Pretty much.
Oh, my gosh. Where did that come from? Where did that come from? Those are the bugs that crawl in your skin on the mummy. Hey, guess who date is. Guess what?
