RVing New Zealand | Fox & Franz Josef Glaciers

A vlog-style YouTube video (uploaded April 22, 2016) documenting an RV trip through New Zealand that visits Fox Glacier and Franz Josef Glacier. Speakers (including Julian and Jordan) narrate long drives (about 13 hours one day), short visits (2 hours at Milford Sound), travel impressions of glaciers that penetrate temperate rainforest, observations about rapid glacier melting, brief hiking decisions, and minor RV issues (fridge leakage). Tone is conversational, informal, and travel-focused.

Foreign.
Where are we going this morning?
To the Volks Glacier.
As Bear Grylls would say.
Glacier.
We don't know what it is behind us right now. Lots of yelling. How long till we get there? About three hours. Last night we ended up driving till about 12:30 and we pulled into a campsite and had no clue what our view would look like in the morning. But we chose pretty good in the dark. That's right. So we pulled a good 13 hours of driving yesterday. About six and a half hours down to Milford Sound and six and a half hours to our campsite. Last night they gave us a total of 2 hours in Milford Sound.
Some of you may be watching. Thinking 13 hours in the camper sounds really terrible. And I would always say that if I was watching it. But really it doesn't matter. You're with good company and you have stunningly beautiful views that definitely are not going to get old in one week in New Zealand. So it doesn't feel like 13 hours.
It's.
It's pretty incredible.
And even though we drove 13 hours for two hours in Milford Sound.
Totally work.
Completely worth it was shocking.
Gotta get back on the road. Gotta get where we're going. Where are we going?
That's what I figured.
We're going to Glacia.
Yeah.
We're going to get some petrol first.
Hold up. First we need to address this tree.
The fern Palm tree.
I'm pretty sure it's a fern tree. It's like a palm tree except a fern grows out of the top instead of palm leaves.
Sa.
We are currently driving through what appears to be a rainforest and it's about 60 degrees outside. We're supposed to be at the glacier in like 10 minutes. This is not all making sense.
We're being hoaxed in some way. Like we're gonna have to take a helicopter tour or something.
This could be interesting. Be at the glacier anytime now. And this is the current view.
Not looking very glaciery.
We've arrived at the glacier.
No. Not even close.
Right there.
However there are still green trees everywhere. So it really is not making much sense.
Conditions in the glacial valley can be dangerous and change rapidly.
That is amazing.
2008. It was a great year for New Zealand.
We're getting our first views of the glacier. The lower half.
Currently practicing for hiking Mount Everest.
And how long?
We'll be there in about. What's today? 10 days? Yep.
We've exercised once on this whole trip.
How much have we planned?
Nothing is booked. We have no idea what we're doing.
Not even Our plane tickets to Nepal.
So maybe we won't.
Are you inside of care?
It depends.
On what?
Excited to see the views. And I'm excited to be done with it.
He did. According to this fake man. High five.
We can't go any further because of this. This. This. This. Yeah, Just those. That's it. The Fox Glacier.
Fox and its neighbor Franz Josef are some of the only glaciers in the world. World that penetrate temperate rainforest. That explains a lot.
We are leaving the Fox Glacier and going to his brother Joseph.
Bronze. Joseph.
We have just arrived at the. The Franz Josef glacier. Let's see how far the hike is. You have a limit on how far you'd hike to see a second glacier?
No, Just took a little power nap on the way here.
Perfect.
Ready to go.
This is sounding like a bit of a ripoff. An extra 30 minutes to be an extra 300 meters away.
Come on, fronds.
This.
This sounds better.
Two roads diverge in a green wood.
And we are taking the path that Jordan chooses. This appears to be the path less traveled by.
And I. I took the path less traveled by.
And we. We took the path more traveled by.
And that did not make a difference. This one appears to be a lot more impressive.
I think this is the end of the road for us.
We can see it just fine.
It is incredibly impressive how fast this thing is melting.
All right, we just got some snacks and we're headed two hours to the beach. And we're gonna cook ourselves some delicious Alfredo. We won't be able to see the beach, but maybe tomorrow morning. Yay.
Oh, my goodness.
Go.
We slid down up that night.
There is water from the fridge. There's water leaking from the fridge. Okay. Well, let's take this money. Okay.
Figure that out. We having problems back there?
I feel like this happened yesterday. I have water on my sock.
Oh.
Because there's water on the floor.
Uhoh.
I'm about to investigate source of problem while we are in motion. Fridge. It is not my toiletry bag.
Okay. The stops are off.
Does it smell like jalapenos?
No. I think it's just moisture from the fridge.
That's not good.
It looks like it's coming all the way.
Yeah.
From the freezer. Yep. Yep.
Okay. Give me the diagnosis.
There was frost in the freezer section of the refrigerator last night. It got fairly warm in here because the heater was on. I believe all of the frost has melted and is now on the floor. It's okay. Crisis averted.
Longest bridge scene ever.
Nobody realizes we just slid all the way up that hill.
Okay.
When you walk, you gotta bend this the knees a little bit. You gotta land on your heel and you gotta roll to your toes. So.
This is too much.
I got it. I'll steady cam it.
I got it.
How close on your hands?
Pretty close. Just because that's like a shot we can't get.
Julian. What did you say?
No napping in the trunk.
No napping in the trunk.
If I'm gonna sing some, somebody's gonna tell me what to do.
What are you talking about?
What if your toothpaste falls off and you get sunburnt? And here's always a good spf.
