SHRUNKEN HEAD in the Middle of the Earth!

YouTube vlog by Nate and Kara Buchanan documenting Nate's birthday in Quito, Ecuador. They spend the day with friends Jordan and Julianne and local guide Rosa, eat local foods (tortillas de verde, plantain sandwich), visit the Equator Museum (GPS-marked equator line, Coriolis demonstrations, egg-balancing certificates, shrunken head exhibit), and attend a chocolate-making workshop (truffles). Notes small factual details like admission price ($4), snack prices ($0.50), birthday meal deal ($1.25), and an award claim about the chocolate shop (best chocolate in the world, 2014).

Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday, Nate.
Thank you.
Happy birthday.
Thank you.
Coffee, Brekkie.
Happy Nate.
How'S your birthday going?
Gonna get my favorite food in Quito. Tortillas de verde with a fried egg on top.
Yeah.
And, of course, coffee. And it's all $1.25 birthday.
Happy birthday.
Oh, my God.
All right, we're going out.
Okay, wait. And then I have to take you. You go there, Cara. And then I take a picture with you.
Yay.
Today is Jordan and Julianne's last day in Quito, which is very sad, but they're not leaving tonight till 11:55, so we have, like, the whole day to hang out together.
They're seriously the best friends ever, because Jordan was just here for in Panama, which really isn't that close.
I was going to say not here.
To Ecuador, but they still came to see us. And Julianne came all the way from.
Tennessee, even though they could only spend three days with us.
Y' all are the best.
It was worth it.
Worth it. So we had a super lazy morning hanging out in our Airbnb, and now we're going to get some breakfast. Another reason I love it when Jordan and Julianne come to visit us is they always come at the perfect time when I need something from home. Like, the first time was in New Zealand. We were about to do Everspace Camp, so they brought us everything we needed to hike for two weeks. Then the next time was in Greece. I can't even remember what they brought us that time. What they bring us that time. Do you remember?
Just turn around.
And this time, my Birkenstocks have really just bitten the dust. I ordered some new Tevas. Never had Tevas before, but they looked super cute. And I got them sent to my house, and then Julianne brought them to me here.
That was so long to say, you got new shoes.
I really like cute shoes that are good for my feet, so I'll let you know how they go.
That is pretty incredible.
I'm not gonna l.
There we go. 1, 2, 3. So I'm pretty sure there's some type of presidential election going on here. And those two giant heads were like some of the candidates. This vlog expresses no political opinion of the elections in Ecuador. We just happened to pass. Lazo Presidente.
Couldn'T resist the chocolate.
I have no earthly idea what I just purchased. It's a massive chocolate ball, and it was only $0.50.
Donut Hole with icing.
Oh, no. I'm like that.
Is it like a brownie? Gimme, gimme, gimme.
Breakfast brownie. I guess any brownie can be breakfast brownie.
So our two local places that we are planning on getting breakfast that are closed on Sundays, or at least they're closed right now. So we're getting a little appetizer and we're gonna go back to the plaza that we went on our walking tour.
And hope that.
It reminds me.
One.
Of the little square things with the sprinkles.
Little brownies. Cosmic brownies.
Cosmic brownie. It's like a mushy, fresh cosmic brownie.
So many people.
It seems 90% of restaurants are closed on Sunday mornings here in Quito. So we've ended up in a bakery with some pastries and some coffee. So some of you may have realized that we have been using the exact same coffee shots. Basically.
We've been using the exact same coffee shots, like the same three coffee shots since January. And it's because our new Sony is like so big you can't get it over the coffee. So it's a huge pain. Now that we have the G7X pack which we're vlogging on right now, should be able to get some new coffee shots starting right now.
Woohoo.
And now Rosa from our Galapagos trip is here to pick us up and she's taking us to the middle of the world.
Hi rosa. We're excited about it. Hey.
So we just arrived at a museum that is built right on the equator. On the way here, we passed a monument that was built like 200 yards away that for a long time they thought was the actual equator. But then technology progressed and now this museum was built actually on the equator. And Rose used to work here and she says this place is awesome. And she's going to show us her own.
You'll see.
Welcome to the traditional house in Amazon Rio.
This line right here was calculated with military gps. We are currently standing in the northern hemisphere and Jordan Juliana in the south. Different sides of the world.
Okay, now let's stand both at the same time.
Okay.
The movement of the earth every day is in this way. West and east, one force in the middle. These forces are centrifugal forces. Start here and go into the Pals Meadow. When arriving the poles. These forces combat, return and change the name. The name is centripetal forces. Centripetal forces crash with centrifugal forces and produce the natural phenomena. In the northern hemisphere produce phenomena such as hurricanes and tornadoes. And in south cyclones and typhoons, these phenomenons are the same. Are you ready?
Yes.
Okay, look. The water and look, the leaves. 1, 2, 3. Look, the top part.
Look at.
Look here. Look at the water. Don't produce wheelbarrow. The water falls straight up because it's in the middle of the world.
What? You're a bullet fighter.
But please come with me to the south hemisphere. Welcome to the south hemisphere. There's no way.
Turns clockwise. Ends like cyclone and typhoon. Welcome to the north hemisphere.
But turns counterclockwise.
He took the water, he poured it in the thing. No spinning because we were directly on the equator. We took it five feet over there. It spun clockwise, and then we took it five feet into the northern hemisphere and it spun counterclockwise.
Mind blown.
I was skeptical.
I'm convinced.
And now we are going to try to balance an egg on a nail on the equator. Do it, Julianne.
Nate versus Jordan.
Who can do it first?
Everything's a race.
I have about zero patience for stuff like this.
Somebody else go for it. K.
I did it.
Yay.
I didn't feel like that was ever going to happen.
Car using up all the camera battery here.
You got it. I believe in you.
I believe in you.
Yes. She's nervous.
She did it.
Okay. 1, 2, 3. 1, 2, 3. Very well. Another exercise is please put your fingers and don't let me open the fingers. One, two, three, go. One, two, three.
One, two, three. Okay, you are. Please stand up on.
This moment. I try with two things.
Yeah, Look.
One, two, three.
No way.
Two, Twist. One, two, three.
Oh, my gosh.
One, two, three.
So the first time he pulled down really hard and none of us moved. And here he only used two fingers and none of us could stay standing.
In this Amazon region existed a community. You can see on the image in the picture, they are shuai community. They are characterized for make the shrunken heads. This is two real shrunken heads. He was. He was a boy, 12 years old, and he's a sloth.
This is so crazy. Okay, so they take out the skull and they put it in hot water. Here you're gonna see something. But if you not filled, because this.
Is really a shrinking head, I can't. What?
It's official.
Official.
You are egg master in the middle of the world.
We are leaving the middle of the world. This museum was the coolest.
Normally, like, my expectations for museums are, like, way down here. It was only $4 to get in. And it was like one of the most fun museums we've been too.
And they incorporated a lot of things that have nothing to do with the equator, but just with this region in the past, how they used to live and stuff. So that was a really cool addition.
The neck at people, the shrunken heads.
We got certificates for being egg masters, for balancing the egg, keeping this forever.
Got a stamp. So they're superficial.
We told Rosa that we really like the plantains here, so she brought us to her favorite restaurant called Happy Bear Day. Every week has plantain. So we ordered the chicken sandwich, except for instead of bread, it. What is it?
Plantain de verde. And we learned that it's called plantain de verde because when it's still green, it tastes savory. But if you wait until it's ripe, then it's sweet. It's awesome. My new favorite sandwich. We had the best time with Rosa, and she just dropped us off back in Quito, and now I have one more adventure left for the day. We're making chocolate.
Apparently, the place we're going to make chocolate was voted the best chocolate in the world in 2014. So we're pretty excited about it.
Can't wait.
Wait.
Okay.
Which way we going? I think you. I think you went the right way. She went the wrong way. We can edit that.
So we just learned about the history of chocolate from way back when to where it is now. This is a tequila plant. Normally they're, like, green and yellow, so this is what it looks like when it's dried. And on the inside are all these seeds that eventually look like this. And then they roast them and grind them and then melt them into chocolates.
So our truffle dough is made out of cacao powder, coconut sugar, BlackBerry, and.
Almonds. And it's really sticky. And now we learned about all of the toppings or, I guess fillings for our truffles. So we're making our big thing of dough into a bunch of little doughs so we can try different toppings in each one.
Stuffed with a peanut stuffed with golden berry. Super sweet double chocolate with sugar, salt, cinnamon salt, cinnamon, chocolate. Salt, cinnamon, chocolate. Pretty sure I'm gonna love all this. I think I went a bit topping heavy. I'm having trouble re sticking them together now. Did you already eat all your truffles?
I had all them but one.
How are they?
So I had nine. They were delicious.
The only one that surprised me was the picante. I made a spicy one, and then I forgot which one it was. I bit into it, and it really surprised me. But the rest were amazing. I have a new favorite spice.
It's called.
It tastes like Christmas.
Yeah. Thank you very much.
Thank you.
Bye. Bye. Bye.
Just a weekend trip.
They're leaving us.
Okay.
Thank you for bringing me stuff. You doing girl things with me and helping me pick out my new sweat.
Happy birthday.
Thanks for coming.
That was fun.
Love you.
See you guys.
Bye, Vlog.
Bye.
So cute.
Quit that on the camera. Kissing on the camera.
This could be the COVID photo.
You can see they don't use clothes or dress. Only use this fever. This vegetable fever. For keep the genital in this position. Because when they are running or when they are entering the genital, don't bounce.
Okay.
In the ears you can see.
How is it?
It's so good. I'm eating it off with my hands. Is completely stuck to me.
What? Where did your truffle disappeared?
You put onto a ball.
Gosh, it's really stuck on.
I don't know why your.
Your truffle literally disappeared.
Just warping spoon. Just eat up. Just eat that. That's your truffle. That is now your truffle.
Was it good?
I'm great, Sam.
