Sundays in Santiago | Churros & Parques!

This YouTube vlog follows Kara and Nate Buchanan on their second/third day in Santiago, Chile. They move to a new Airbnb (about 15 minutes across town) with AC and a pool, note city-wide fires and a state of emergency affecting visibility, eat Chilean food (including a churro filled with dulce de leche), visit Parque Forestal on a busy Sunday, explore Castillo Hidalgo and Plaza de Armas, and encounter a restored historic fire engine (built 1865, restored 2008).

Sam.
It is our second day in Chile. We started today with a very short workout down at the workout room in our apartment building. So now we feel like we can eat more.
Is that why I did it? This is our third day in Santiago. When we got here two days ago, we had no earthly idea what we were doing. As I said in yesterday's video, we booked an additional six nights here. But this Airbnb is not open and it doesn't have any air conditioning. So we're moving 15 minutes across town to a new, nicer Airbnb for the next six days.
It has AC and a pool on.
The roof, and I got a really good deal on it. Yay.
We love our new Airbnb. Let me show you our three favorite features. The coffee pot, the ac, and the closet. We haven't had a closet in a long time.
Check out this view.
It's the little things.
So I thought, like, all of the smoke, fog, stuff we were seeing was pollution, but it turns out that it is way hotter here than normal.
They're having fires all over the city.
Yeah. And there's fires all around, so that's why the visibility is terrible.
They're in a state of emergency. We had no clue.
Just thought it was pollution.
I'm so hungry. Do you want to go eat?
What are we gonna eat?
I don't know. Everything was closed on the way here. It was like the quietest Sunday morning. Nobody was out. Everything was closed except for Dunkin Donuts.
So our Airbnb host, Daniella, told us that she comes to this restaurant, Puert.
All the time, and that the food is very Chilean and a lot like what your mom would cook for you at home. So we're really excited. And it comes with bread and really.
Good salsa, chicken, lettuce, egg, carrots, avocado, lemon, I think beets, corn, cauliflower, and broccoli. And yours is good. Wow, that was good.
Mine is not so healthy. Fried egg, a bunch of onions, french fries, and a fourth of chicken.
I'd never think to put egg and onions on my French fries.
It's pretty good.
Domination.
Couldn't do it. Thought I could. I even worked out this morning so I could eat.
Grabbing some necessities for our new apartment.
And it's right next to our place.
We escaped the afternoon heat in our one room in our apartment that has ac, but now it's feeling really good and we're heading out for the evening.
Apparently, the thing to do on Sundays is go to the park, so we're going to Start with that.
So it turns out that park PDA forest stall is the place to be on Sundays. There are tons of people here and most of the people are cuddling with their partner in the grass. There's lots of PDA here and there's also lots of people selling art, so it's pretty cool.
This is the most random poll I've ever seen. There's a half eaten ice cream cone, a car air freshener, a flower, a.
Can.
A drawing.
A flip flop.
I want to contribute.
Somehow I feel like this would be a stop on a free walking tour. Yeah.
This park just keeps going and going. There's like twice the amount of people there were before. People playing music and people selling food.
Food.
And that has been the worst part about not having any cash the last three days is that we can't buy you enough food. Tomorrow is Monday and we're getting cash. We are going to eat a ton of street food.
Wow.
So I ask if they take US Dollars because this looks so good. Pretty sure I paid way too much, but I don't even care. It is a fried churro filled with what looks to be dulce de leche.
Oh, my gosh. That's so good.
One of the best things I've ever had. They're renting out these little four wheel bike things and you gotta be careful. I've almost been ran over by like 10 kids taking out my ankles. This is crazy. They do parks right in Santiago. They've set up like trampolines for all the kids. There's food everywhere, Kids everywhere, people everywhere.
This was the first fire engine in South America and it was built in Portland, Oregon in the USA in 1865. It came here and then in 2008 they fully restored it and it totally. It's fully functioning right now. So cool.
Our next stop is Castillo Hidalgo. We've been able to see this big hill with the castle looking thing on top, or fortress, I think is what it is from both of our Airbnbs. So we thought we would check it out. Let's go.
Sam.
The party up here.
Wish I could say we planned that, but we ended up in like the perfect part of town to watch the sunset.
Ended up back in Plaza de Arma because it's like two blocks away from our new place. Everybody's out here again having a great time. Santiago is our type of city. Just one that you can go like wander around in and you have no idea what you're gonna run into, but it's always gonna be interesting. Not to mention all the street food, which we can't wait to try loving. Santiago. And we are calling it a night. I think Kara's gonna cook us something back in the apartment.
Got it. We're not opening every vlog like, exact.
Yes, we are.
I apologize.
Okay. I can't say without laughing. It is our second day.
That's the biggest nasty spread I've ever seen.
Hold on.
Mommy. I've been on the phone with my mom cooking some black bean dip. It's pretty good.
