Turkey to FINLAND (our 90th country!)

First-person travel vlog by Nate and Kara Buchanan documenting their trip from Istanbul, Turkey to Kemi in Lapland, Finland — their 90th visited country. The transcript covers obtaining a tax-free refund on newly purchased camera gear in Istanbul, tight flight connections, arrival and reaction to heavy snow in Kemi, trying on purchased warm clothes, switching to and testing new camera and drone equipment (including the DJI Mavic 2), and friendly interactions with local residents over dinner and coffee.

One, two. Okay.
Thank you very much.
Morning.
So we just did something that we've never done before. If you missed yesterday's video, we bought a few thousand dollars worth of new camera equipment, and we just got a tax free refund for all of it. That was much easier than expected. When we were buying the stuff at the store the other day, the guy filled out this form for us and he was like, yeah, take it to the airport and they'll give you like a thousand dollars back. I was very skeptical.
He also said, it'll only take two minutes. I was certain that that was not true, but it worked.
We've been traveling for three years. I've always seen these tax free signs, but I've never known how it worked. They fill out a form when you're buying the stuff, then you bring it to the airport, you take it to this customs office, they give you a stamp, and you take that stamp to this little kiosk, and they give you money.
And they didn't even look at our stuff. We were all worried about the stuff being open, and we kind of used some of it and we brought everything in the box and they were literally.
Just like, here you go. It was so easy. But now we have a problem because we have a lot of boxes to fit into a little backpack. So.
This has to fit in this.
So that one.
I'm so scared I'm gonna leave something important in one of these boxes. So now the question we cover. Do we keep this nice bag? Okay, so we kind of did it. We put as much as we could in our backpacks us this bag for free with the camera yesterday drones in here, and we're just gonna leave the big stabilizer in here while we fly.
If they let us on the airplane. Today, we are flying to Lapland, Finland for something very exciting.
And we've been preparing for this trip the last couple days in Istanbul by buying lots of warm clothes that we did not have. And none of them fit in our suitcases. So we're wearing a lot of them.
So if we're perspiring through this video.
That'S why, like, literally both of my feet are in puddles of sweat.
Snow boots are the worst. We've always tried not to be like the backpacker looking people in the airplane who are like wearing the huge boots and all their clothes because they can't put them in their bag. But that is totally us today.
Please let us on.
Fresh air. It smells so good.
Now we just have a three hour.
Flight to today's flight from Istanbul to Helsinki International Airport is going to be 3 hours 15 minutes at an outlook of 34,000ft.
Several hours later, we have arrived in Finland, AKA winter.
So we're not sure why, but for some reason, our plane sat on the Runway for an hour while we were in Istanbul. We had a two hour connection. Now we have less than 40 minutes. We still need to check in for this flight, get through security and get on the plane. Just like setting the scene here in case the next time we turn on the camera we look very sad.
Yes, but we need to add it to our systems.
The lady at check in literally had to call and ask him to hold the plane for us. I got to stop to the security. Cara's already going. This is making my feet very sweaty in my snow boots.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Last one's up. This is not good for our bags.
We were the last ones to get on the bus and I felt like everybody was giving us a dirty look. But I wanted to be like, it wasn't our fault. Normally it would be our fault. We would have spent too much time in the lounge and that's why we were the last ones. But it wasn't our fault this time. That's just what I wanted to tell everybody. But we made it. That's what matters.
We have made it to Kimi. And I think I'm gonna need more than a sweatshirt. It's cold. It's just white as far as you can see. It's so beautiful.
This is our 90th century.
90.
90.
Wow. I can't feel my face. We've only been out here for, like, two seconds.
My teeth are hurting.
We were literally out there for 30 seconds and I'm already frozen.
I felt so silly wearing my snow boots all day. And I've been so mad and so hot, but I'm already so glad that I have them.
I love my boo.
I can't believe we're here.
I can't either.
I can't believe we're in country number 90. I can't believe we're in a place where it's just, like, white as far as you can see. We've never seen this before, Kimmy.
I've never even heard of it before.
Have we said while we're here? No.
This is crazy.
That is the most snow we've ever seen.
Never seen anything like this. Few things in life give me, like, a giddier feeling than snow, especially when it's falling from the sky. I hope so much that it actually snows while we're here. And some of the piles on the side of the road are over 10ft tall.
This is insane. And people are just like outside biking and walking.
You would never drive on the roads when they looked like this at home.
No, no. Everybody would have bought all the food from the grocery stores and we'd be staying indoors.
How do you get the snow off your bag?
What a weird hotel. It does kind of feel like a haunted house.
Also, if you've been thinking to yourself, wow, they spent all that money on that new camera yesterday. And I'm not even sure that I can tell the difference. That's. That's because we haven't switched yet. I've been like trying to figure this one out all day while we've been on the airplanes. But I think it's. I think it's finally time. It's a big moment. It's a little bit of like a sad moment. Like when this camera switches. I have a hard time going back to something that's a lower quality. So this will probably be one of the last times that we use it. And this has been like an extension of my arm for the last two years. But it's time. Ready? Are you ready?
No.
Yes. We're doing it. One, two.
New camera.
How does it look?
How do we look?
Are we better lit? Are we. Are we crispier? Is there like a depth of field? Is it a little out of focus behind us?
Are we in focus?
I hope we're in focus.
Our old Sony has like the best focus. It is unmatched. So I'm a little nervous about that.
There could be some trade offs with this camera. We don't know.
Just look at it.
This room is really ugly. So let's take it outside.
Let's go play.
It out of here.
Technology.
Help.
We are actually trapped in our room. You just have to push harder.
This feels so weird.
How crazy is this town?
I just feel so weird looking at this camera. I feel like I'm cheating on our camera. I feel so bad. It feels like I love it.
It feels like we're the only ones here. It feels like we're the only ones in our hotel. We've seen like two people out here on the street, but it is absolutely beautiful.
There's a Goodwill. We could buy more warm clothes if we need them.
This is like our test. We put on all of our clothes to see if we're going to be warm enough.
I don't think so. I really don't. I really think we'll end up at Goodwill. We Tried. I mean, we bought a ton of stuff. I'm wearing two pairs of new pants, two new shirts, gloves, a new hat, two pairs of socks, a new pair of boots. Didn't know what else to get.
Yeah, it's cold. Okay, we missed lunch because of our short connection time, so we're out to find some dinner.
Leonard, look how large this is. This is crazy.
Over here.
This is when you know it's cold. When you can build an ice sculpture of fish in the town square and it doesn't melt. It's just a giant block of unmelted ice.
Oh, it's slippery. Oh, wow, that was fast. Ice is slippery, if anybody was wondering. Oh, God, get me out of here. That was awesome. Let's do it together.
Ready?
Playing on slippery ice.
Whoa.
Great way to break in our new camera.
Your pants are waterproof and mine are. We gotta do this fast. 1, 2, 3.
Snow really turns us into children. Oh, I have snow everywhere.
I love it.
In all my cracks, there's snow. Quack, quack. Ouch.
Got snow in my socks. Well, my leggings are tucked into my socks, and then my pants are over. My socks thought it was enough protection.
This is a dangerous spot. Okay, let's eat.
We are experiencing Finnish hospitality at a smartest.
Greetings from Finland. These are our new friends. They walked us all the way to our restaurant.
My face is frozen in a smile.
So nice to meet you. It was nice to meet you too.
They were literally the nicest people ever.
We were watching the sunset, and we were just, like, both standing up to our knees in the snow, and they were like, we knew you weren't from Finland.
Their English is so good. And they kept, like, laughing at themselves trying to think of English words.
Apparently, they don't get many tourists here, so we're just sticking out like a sore thumb.
Yeah, there's, like, three restaurants open right now.
Y'.
All. I really only crave burgers and fries when I'm really, really hungry. Like, this is what sounds the best. And these are the crunchiest, most delectable sweet potato fries I've ever had. And they're super hot and warm. It's like the ultimate comfort food right now. Look how huge this burger is. Oh, this is just what I need to warm me up. Eee.
M.
Look how good those French fries look. All the food that we eat on this channel for the rest of however long we have, this camera is gonna look way better.
How does it look? Is that beautiful?
First time he's out, you so excited.
Uh. Oh, I can't press the button with my mitten. Here we go. The inaugural flight of the DJI Mavic 2. This miniature test. It's, like, pretty much dark out here. Sun's already set. The other drone would have looked terrible. Please don't crash into the snow. Oh, wow. Oh, it's quieter. It's so quiet. It's noticeably quieter. Wow. Here we go. Three, two, one. Yeah. Wow, it's fast. So good. The big sensor is a game changer.
Oh, my fingers. Crossbite is setting in on the left hand. I love everything about it. Best purchase I've ever made.
No buyer's remorse coming from Nate Buchanan. That's a big deal.
I really struggle with buying new things. I usually hate all new things I buy for at least the first week until I get used to them. Wow. My fingers have frostbite.
Yep, it's cold. Let's go.
Now. We're ending the night with a coffee with our new friends.
How do we just manage to run into this many nice people all around the world?
There are so many nice people in Finland. Look at all these people here to welcome us to the coffee shop.
Hello.
How are you? It's like an army of snowmen. I love Kenny.
This one's been injured. Apparently there's some kind of festival yesterday. I think they're celebrating the town being 150 years old and everybody came here and built snowmen. This is so much fun. I just thought we were going to sleep tonight.
Somehow our new friends knew exactly the way to my heart. Coffee and chocolate cake.
Just what I needed.
Greetings to Tennessee. Bye.
They are the best, some of the nicest people we have ever met. I feel like we've said that a lot lately.
Oh, it makes a noise.
That's the first time I've ever pressed record. That's the first time I've ever pressed record record on this camera.
Oh, it's so good. Oh, this is a terrible idea. This was a terrible idea.
We're gonna try to romantically walk into the sunset. But we're sinking.
We're newbies to snow. Oh, my feet are gonna be so cold.
War mission.
This is why snowshoes exist.
Go back to safety.
It looks more solid than it really is.
That's to my boots.
I really just want you to jump in this.
I thought that would be a lot more dramatic. Oh, my gosh. I can see your breath. It looks so cold.
