We Slept in the World's Most Expensive Underwater Hotel

Nate and Kara Buchanan spent 24 hours in the Conrad Maldives' underwater villa, the world's first submerged hotel room. The bedroom sits on the reef floor with 180-degree ocean views, an underwater bathroom, and an escape hatch. It cost them points to book, but the nightly rate runs around $50,000.

We are going to be spending the next 24 hours living in the world's first and most expensive underwater hotel room. My face hurts from smiling so much.
That is where we're sleeping.
This is so cool.
So cool.
That was my bathing suit. I promise. Good morning from the Conrad, Maldives. We have been staying in this incredible overwater villa for the last five nights for free. Thanks to miles and points. We would have loved to stay in the underwater room the entire time, but we already had to sell the van to afford one night there. So we'll take what we can get. We'll be checking into the underwater room in just two hours. So we thought we would quickly show you around where we've been staying and the rest of the resort. About that island tour, we got a little carried away and it became so long that we decided to make it its own video, which we published over on Daily Drop's YouTube channel. And because it's Daily Drop, we also showed you how you could book this over water villa using miles and points for free, even though it costs over $11,000 per night. So if you want to see the full island tour and learn how you can book this place for free, click the link in the description below after you finish watching this video.
I can't believe this is happening. We're about to, like, live in the most unique, luxurious place we've ever been.
This bridge is so long. Talk about a grand entrance.
Here it is.
We have arrived.
Thank you. I love it.
This is so cool. There's a sign with our names on it. Whoa. This is insane.
Look at this place.
It's exactly like Christmas. Just keeps on getting better.
Merry Christmas to me. There's an elevator in the middle of autumn going down under the sea.
Oh, you turn this way, it's like.
Gonna open that way.
I know, I know, I know.
Ronnie.
Sorry. We're under the water.
So welcome to the very first underwater bedroom in the world.
No way.
This feels like I'm driving a submarine. So how does it work? How are we breathing air? Is it just pumping air from the outside down here? We have, yes. And someone's monitoring us. Yes. But not. Not by looking.
But from the fish. Yes.
Hey, guys. Neighbors. So we've done the world's best flight and the world's best hotel, in my opinion, back to back. So I think this is when we need to retire. I don't know how it gets better than this. We've paid.
Cara always says that everything is the best ever, but I'm turning the camera around this time. To say that she is not exaggerating. This is by far 110% the best place that we have ever stayed.
It just started absolutely pouring out of nowhere because that has been our luck with tropical destinations this year.
This seems like one that's gonna blow through, but I really want to see what a rainstorm looks like underwater.
This is awesome.
That actually looks so cool.
No, I think we're making eye contact.
Shall we?
We shall.
Rose Shandon.
Cause I got it going on Cause I got it going on.
Cheers.
Cheers.
Tastes like luxury. Okay, so if you're looking at this place from the ocean, we're going to start on the left hand side and make our way all the way across, ending in the underwater villa. Behind this door we have our very own.
The floor's even padded.
And this machine is the exact same one that we had on our North Pole cruise. Which means I think it's very expensive.
I think the coal machine is broken.
Ooh, Kira, spend some time on the bike.
No. In case you missed, our biggest series of last year, we biked all the way across the US on a triple seater bike. 36 days at 50 miles a day is enough to last a lifetime. Maybe. Is this how we get it back ins? It's honestly so big you can get lost.
Oh my gosh. I thought we were locked out. Alright, welcome to bedroom number one. This has very much like kids bedroom vibes. Spare bedroom.
Did you mean? The toilet seat in every single room lifts up anytime you get close. So if you heard a weird noise behind me, that's what it was.
Not the best view.
You had to find something to complain about.
However you could could easily fit two couples in here. And if you were splitting the price, it would really, really break it down.
But these people would definitely pay less.
Yeah, here's the entrance and the main attraction of this level. But we'll get to that in a minute. On the way to bedroom number two, you pass the world's largest television. This is what they called the master bedroom. And I'm not going to lie, it's very tempting to stay in here. The level of luxury is very through the roof.
And then you have to make the decision, do you sleep upstairs or do you sleep down? Obviously you sleep down, but it just feels like a waste to have something this nice up here.
I think this might be the most beautiful bathroom on earth. This tub, it's amazing. There's just a casual chair if you want to hang out in the bathroom.
And this might be the world's most awkward toilet it reminds me of those smoker rooms at the airport. You know, when they keep them in glass boxes. There's a comedian that says, don't tap on the glass. It scares the smokers. Don't do that.
I'm just pict like Nate taking a shower in the morning and then me.
Using the toilet and we can stare at 100% not. Why would you ever want that? All of the rooms here at the Hilton have buttons instead of knobs, which I really enjoy.
Keep in mind this isn't even the best bathroom in this hotel room. Look how large. Like go on that side. It's so big.
Massive, beautiful skylight past your 17 closets.
For you to put your stuff away. You are brought back into. Oh, the bedroom. I'd like to add that this side of the hotel is facing the ocean, like not the resort. So you do have complete privacy. And there is zero reason in my mind to shut these curtains. But if you wanted to, you don't have to do anything with this.
What.
I know.
And welcome to the world's greatest living room. Handmade chocolates and other sweet delights that they homemade for us with ingredients that they grew on the island. This chocolate has gold on it.
There's gold in them hills.
What?
There's gold in dem dye hills.
We have our own bar. I would like to point out that the coconuts have the muraka written on them. Muraka is maldivian for coral, not like maraca, you know, here's the cork that.
Oh, nice.
We have an eight person dining room table. I just feel like we're going to want to eat downstairs and do everything downstairs, but who knows? And this is something I've never seen in a hotel room before. Our island host told us that you can hire a private chef to come to your villa and cook your meals right here in the kitchen.
This goes to the outside so they can just privately come in. You never see them. They cook a meal and it goes straight to your dining room.
In case you want to spend the some time outside facing the island where everyone else has to stay, we have private deck number one.
That was a joke about having to stay. We very much enjoyed our week here in the overwater villa.
But private deck number two is no doubt the best one.
These doors, they make you look tiny.
Look at this. We have a huge pool, multiple lounge chairs, an outdoor shower. But best of all, the deck literally just ends at the ocean. And it's so deep. Could just dive straight off. I mean, I could be completely naked out here. If I wanted to, there's no one around. I could just jump in. If none of this existed, this would still be the coolest hotel room of all time. But we're not even there yet. We're not even to the coolest part yet. It's time. The grand finale here is your first glimpse of the underwater villa.
Oh, I ran into the glass.
You may notice those white things, that whiteness in the water. Those are the towels on our bed. That is where we're sleeping since we took the elevator down the first time. We'll take the stairs. Follow me down under.
Wow, the ocean.
This is my favorite part of the stairs. You ready?
Boom.
Boom. This is definitely where the most fish hang out. There's a ton of reef right here, so they're all just swimming around. Whoa.
Something spooked him.
Maybe it's a shark.
Maybe it was. You know, that's the thing is I don't feel like they, like, care that we're here at all.
Before we go in the bedroom real quick, we want to say a big thank you to Surf Shark for sponsoring this video and for supporting our channel for the last few years so that we can continue to show you incredible places like this underwater hotel. In addition to supporting our channel, Surf Shark has also been keeping our online identity safe for over three years now. If you've never heard of Surf Shark, it is the best VPN on the Internet. VPN standing for Virtual Private network, which encrypts all the data set between your computer and the Internet so that no one can steal your sensitive information. But that's like the boring, necessary part of a vpn. The fun part is it can also be used to unlock content that isn't available in your area. So let's say you're sitting in an underwater hotel in the Maldives and you want to watch Netflix. It's super easy to change your virtual location back to the US and get access to the exact same content library that you're used to watching at home. I am jetting off on an international business trip. Where are you going? To? Canada. If you don't already have a vpn, we highly recommend surfshark. It's the only VPN to offer one account for unlimited devices. Plus, if you use our code. Karen, Nate, you can get three months for free and there's a 30 day money back guarantee, so there is no risk to try it out. To get started, just click the link in the description below. I just want to give you a quick POV of what it's like to Walk off the elevator for the first time. So you've ridden the elevator down, the door's open, and this. This is your view.
Oh, no.
This never gets old. I am speechless. It's amazing. They literally could have put a box down here with a mattress in the middle, but it's like they went all out. Absolutely love what they've done with the bed, but I think I need to do a bed test.
The first ever underwater bed test.
Oh, yes.
One thing that they pointed out while they were showing us around the room and that now I'm noticing everywhere, is that except for the towels, nothing in here is white because white reflects off the glass. So all the walls, the sheets, everything is gray, which is apparently the best color not to distract from everything else that's going on.
There's a space just purely dedicated to enjoying yourself underwater. You just sit in this chair and stare at the ocean. Sharks. These are harmless reef sharks. They're everywhere. I mean, to my knowledge, nobody is a bit by shark.
Also, maybe one of the most interesting features of this room is right here. This is the escape hatch.
So that big thing that looks like a submarine sticking out of the water is where you would come out if you pulled this down.
I'm so tempted.
Nathan.
No. Oh, can we just see?
See what, Nate?
No.
What if it starts filling with water?
It's not going to start dealing with water.
No, please don't. Don't, Nate.
Oh, gosh.
This button. It's behind this little door, and it is the emergency panic button. They told us if you press this, the entire resort will come running. What's crazy is it's not even labeled. Like, it's just this unassuming.
Looks a lot like a light switch.
Two more things. The closet even has a window. Best closet of all time. Really cute robes. And last but definitely not least, the bathroom, of course, is also underwater with this view. But I think this actually is even better than the stairs. You're even closer to the reef here and all the fish. Like, the toilet might be the best spot in the whole place. Look at this. Look at all these things.
Wow. That's actually crazy.
And, of course, the shower has the same amazing waterfall shower head.
For some reason, the idea of showering underwater makes me feel a little funny. I think I might feel like I'm drowning. This mirror actually is one of my favorite parts of the whole bathroom because they were thoughtful enough. If you need it, you can swing it out, but if you don't want it in your way and you're, like, brushing Your teeth so you can see the fish. You can close it and brush your teeth with this view.
So what do we do now?
Hey, little guy. I love that there's coral just growing on the structure. I want to do something.
You make me nervous when you say that.
Do you think there is anyone else in the world who has jumped on a bed at 30,000ft and below the ocean? I think not.
You're so ready. This is.
Oh, gosh, I hope I never grow up.
Me too, dad.
In case it does get too sunny or maybe if you didn't want to sleep looking at the fish. I don't know who would want to.
Do that with the press of a button.
Wow. Whoa. That was oddly satisfying.
Yeah. Now it kind of feels like we're in a movie theater, and, like, this is the curved screen, but it's real.
No, don't play that one. So we've just come upstairs to get some more food to take back downstairs. And we were just saying, no matter where you go, it feels like you're wasting time, because if you're downstairs, it feels like you should be upstairs. If you're upstairs, it feels like you should be downstairs.
We don't have enough time in the day.
All right. We've got all the good stuff from upstairs.
Goodbye, beautiful upstairs.
Cannot believe we have an elevator.
Our life is so crazy.
Come on, turtles and stingrays.
Cheers.
Cheers. Who are we?
I'm assuming this looks as ridiculous as it feels.
What do we do now?
Can you hear all of, like, the cracking and popping?
Like, this room sounds alive.
So I was just doing a little research about this place, and they actually spent two years building this in Singapore, and then they brought it over on a ship and lowered it down onto the reef with a crane.
$15 million later, and it's cool that.
It was the first in the world. The restaurant that we ate at the other day, that was the first underwater restaurant, and this is the first underwater villa.
All right, you ready for this? Ready. All right, fish. I'm coming into your world.
That's a huge drop.
That is not what I thought he was about to do. Nate is cracking me up. He becomes like a little kid when it comes to. To snorkeling. He loves to see how long he can hold his breath. So he couldn't wait to go out in the water and see what it looks like from a fish's perspective. I don't know if he's happier in here or out there.
It's kind of hard to snorkel with a mustache. Mask really fills up a little dizzy for my performance.
Wow.
Do we have washcloths? Washcloths.
He warned me.
In the shower. Here we have, like, double glass, so just be careful.
I might have a black eye from earlier when you were snorkeling. I was trying to see you, and I literally smashed my face on that.
I can actually see where you smashed your face into it right now.
Can you really?
That is where Kara's face smashed.
We don't usually shower in our swimsuits, but.
Wow.
So cool.
This is amazing.
We're doing it. We're showering underwater.
Best shower you've ever had.
Yeah, no doubt.
The only problem is the shower got too hot.
I'm going to wipe it off.
Everyone's going to laugh. It's getting steamy.
Just, like, physically. Not that way. Are we the first people to ever have a shower on an airplane and underwater? Are we just setting records here? Yes. Honestly, Best shower ever.
This might be the least fancy meal ever ordered. In Morocca, we have chow mein noodles and curry.
Our island host even said, I can't believe you could have ordered anything you wanted. And you got chow mein noodles. I love that. We have a huge dining table upstairs.
And we're sitting home. The closest thing we've ever done to this is take my niece to sleep at the aquarium in Tennessee, and I have such special memories from that. The funny thing is, it's actually pretty similar.
It's very similar. I just don't want this day to end. It's going by too quickly.
Wow. Nighttime is where it's at. Oh, wow.
This is crazy. We just came downstairs. All these lights automatically come on at night.
Wow.
And it's attracting the biggest fish and sharks. I was not expecting this at all. Whoa.
Look how big that one is.
What is that?
Oh, please come closer again. That was too cool. Whoa. Look at that one. What? Wow.
Look at that shark just disappearing into the darkness.
That is fantastic.
Freaky.
I didn't think it would actually be better at night, but it's better.
It's better.
Gosh. Did it scare you?
Yes. I'll never get used to that.
Oh, this is not the place to be at night.
Oh. This is their daytime hangout.
Whoa. The closet at night. The deep side. Wow. This makes me never, ever want to swim in the ocean at night. Yeah. How much would I have to pay you to jump in right here? None. It's not happening. This is so cool.
So cool. It was just such a surprise. I wish we would have been recording when we first walked In. We were both like, woo.
We didn't know how good it was gonna be. Wow, sharks everywhere. Thousands of fish. You see that shark? Yeah. The giant fish is back.
Okay, so this iPad acts as a remote for all the lights in the water. We're gonna see if we can create a little fish disco action. How about mixed blue and purple fade effect 1?
Did anything happen?
I don't think so.
It literally.
Whoa, that's scary.
So cool. So stinking cool.
Look how huge he is. I mean he's gotta be like three feet.
Oh, I love that. He's just swimming over top. Little feeding frenzy going on out this window. Sharks down there. That's a shark. Do you think this is gonna happen all night?
I hope so. Should we make more coffee?
Probably. Is it just me or does it sound more alive at night?
It's totally more alive.
Listen.
The only thing that can make this night better is if a manta ray swam by. I cannot imagine. Whoa.
You're doing it.
It's like a fish disco.
Wow, the red is ominous.
Well, no manta rays yet. That's been a good night though. The fish are definitely most active after sunset. Like it's slowed down a little bit, but they're still tons of fish everywhere. There's a whole world going on at night under the water that you never think about. Also, I was doing some research and I think there are three other underwater hotels in the world, which means maximum eight people could be sleeping under the ocean tonight. And do you know how many people are on the International Space station right now? 7. Which means that if all the hotels aren't full, there could be more people in sleeping under the ocean tonight than sleeping on the International Space Station.
That is cool. I'd like to think we're the only people in the world there's a chance.
So are we going to sleep with the lights on like this?
I don't know. Is there a way to sleep one light?
Oh, that's not what we want. Slowly draw more boys.
That turned it purple. But I got to like that color better. Feels much darker.
Thanks for doing crazy things with me.
I'll do crazy things like this whenever you want.
What a cool way to wake up.
Wow. I think we have now officially sat.
In every spot.
Including the toilet.
Well, I'm not gonna lie. I have slept better. There were a lot of weird cracks and pops last night, but I wasn't even mad when I was awake. Part of me thought this day was gonna be a little bit of a gimmick. Like we'd come down here we'd take a couple videos, a few photos and then we'd spend most of our time hanging out in the overwater villa no, not a gimmick this has been an.
Experience Totally lives up to the hype.
It'S been so cool to experience underwater in all of its different forms like when you're above the surface when it gets dark and when it rains outside that makes such a big difference in your life it doesn't change the ocean it's constantly alive if this place wasn't so crazy expensive I think it would be one of my top three travel.
Recommendations I mean it still is out.
Of all the crazy places we've stayed I think this was the best Just.
Book your flights in your hotel at the Conrad with points Bring two or three four couple friends with you air.
Mattresses so everyone can sleep downstairs Splurge.
On this for a night Totally worth.
It See you in the next one.
