WE SLEPT WITH SHARKS (overnight in an aquarium)

Nate and Kara Buchanan spend the night in an aquarium with their niece Galilee, sleeping directly under a shark tank. They document the experience to create a memorable adventure for her.

This is our home for the night, under 750,000 gallons of water that holds over 40 sharks.

We're Kara and May. We travel the world full time for four years, visiting 100 countries. But 2020 brought us back to the US where we bought our first home, a converted sprinter van. After spending the last five months driving our new home all around the U.S. we returned back to our hometown of Nashville, Tennessee to spend time with our family for Thanksgiving.
Today we are back in the van, driving four hours east to Gatlinburg, Tennessee on a quest to become our niece's favorite aunt and uncle. We figure since we're not here most of the time and we're usually out traveling, we'd try to make this time at home as special as possible. If you've been following our channel for the last few years, you may remember my sister Kayla and her husband Barrett, who we traveled to Portugal, Iceland, and Italy with. Oh, it happened again.
I'm sorry.
Everything's fine.
And this is their oldest daughter, Galilee. You know, the one that we're trying to impress.
I'm so excited. What? I'm so excited.
I'm so excited.
Woo hoo. I'm Daddy Rose sick.
We're all very excited right now.
All right.
We're moving in.
This feels so weird. Walking into an aquarium with my queen size pillows right now.
Her favorite show is Bubble Guppy, so she's in love with all of the underwater creatures. And Ripley's aquarium was nice enough to work it out with us tonight so that we could sleep in the tunnel underneath the shark tank as an early Christmas present.
Smiling.
Are you ready to go?
Yeah. All right.
We're starting with a tour of the inner workings of the aquarium. Pretty sure Gally just wants to see.
The fish.
So they're actually going to be vegetarians. Wow.
Baby. Oh my.
We've been here for five minutes and I'm pretty sure we've already quenched the favorite aunt and uncle title.
This wasn't supposed to be a video completely dedicated to our niece, but come on, she's way cuter than all of us. And I just think it's so much more fun to experience an aquarium through the eyes of a kid where everything is just new and exciting. And this is one of my favorite videos we've filmed in a long time.
We waiting for a snack?
Are you waiting patiently?
Thank you. I need some water too.
Let's go. Go. Come on.
We just had our snack and now the stingrays are getting theirs can you touch it?
Touch it, Daddy. You can do it.
Yeah, Daddy. Come on, Mr. Sting. Red, we got some fish here.
Oh, Think he's hungry. Oh, he's coming back.
Oh, he got long as tail is. He did it. That was awesome. I see some other socks. Hey, what is that?
What is that? She is so darn cute. I know I'm biased, but.
Hey, little guy. Hey, Rick. He has a meal.
Sine and I went to college about an hour away from Gatlinburg, and one of our dates, like, 10 years ago, was to this aquarium. So to be here tonight after hours, when no one else is here, having our own private tour and getting to bring our niece with us is so special. Galilee's probably way too young to remember any of this, but at least we have this video as proof that we're the cool Anna and we'll never forget.
Right behind you.
I'm okay.
I'm okay. I'm okay.
That's mesmerizing. That really is. It looks like it's swimming down, but somehow it's going up.
What is it?
Jellyfish.
These are moon jellies. They're actually one of the most common, and they are the least venomous in our skin, so we're nice and safe with them.
Do you want to touch one?
Wow. There you go.
They feel a little bit like wet gummy bears.
All right, the tour is over. And now we have free reign of the entire aquarium for an hour.
We could probably play longer, but it's getting close to our bedtime, and I cannot wait to see where we're sleeping tonight.
Hey, what is that?
It's a frogfish. Those things are terrifying. It's a lionfish. What does a lion say?
One special line between.
A snake.
What?
This is swimming crazy. Without a doubt, the best part about this whole experience has been seeing G's reaction to everything. But getting an entire aquarium to yourself, just to go around and see everything without having to worry about anybody else. That's pretty cool. What do you think, Kayla? This is amazing.
That's crazy.
That's a giant shark. And that's where we're sleeping. Can you help me push the button, Galle.
All right, time to put our PJs on.
How cute are our new jeans? We bought these specifically for this sleepover penguin PJs. The penguins we're gonna see tomorrow.
We have a new party.
Are you ready to go to sleep?
It's almost midnight and she's still going.
This girl's still going. This one's not.
Dark.
Got it nice.
Tell me if I'm gonna knock over a fish tank.
Didn't even know air mattresses got this big.
Whoa.
All right. This is our home for the night. Under 750,000 gallons of water that holds over 40 sharks.
Whoa.
Look at this view.
No way.
Yeah, right.
Gally, what is that?
It's a shark.
Right above our bed. Oh, we're so close. That shark is way bigger than you.
Good night. Good night. Good night.
Thank you, Ashley.
Just for comparison, this is the thickness of their air mattress. And this is. Do you feel guilty?
I mean, we tried to give it to them and they said, no, nobody's gonna believe us. But we did.
I exceed the weight limit, but this.
Thing'S gonna hold them up great.
How good is this, though? I don't think there could be a more peaceful place to sleep. Much more relaxing than the haunted cave that we stayed in a couple weeks ago.
I think you're gonna sleep a lot better.
Much, much better. They haven't told us about any ghosts that haunt the aquarium.
Just shark infested waters.
Wow.
This is pretty incredible.
Do you think they're gonna bring his car?
Do you think you have enough energy to read or you just want to go to sleep? I'll read you one story. Do you want to see the pictures?
That shark just stuck his nose out of the water.
Can I lay down beside you?
How good is this, G?
This is awesome.
Good night. See you in the morning.
Now you're good.
I love you, Gabby.
I love you.
I'm so sweet. I can't believe we're sleeping in here. This is wild. You sleep tonight? Yeah, well, I sleep tonight. Do you think you won't? Are you scared, though?
What is that?
What is it?
What is it?
We're still awake.
Of course.
I thought you were going to sleep.
I can't.
Night, Galley. I'm so excited. I already can't wait to open my eyes and see the sharks in the morning.
There's so many sharks in here that there's one swimming over your head every 30 seconds.
So crazy. I hope Gally sleeps well. I hope she's had fun today. Galley, remember Aunt Karen. Uncle Nate are the coolest man and Uncle. Gosh, I love her. I'm so happy.
Mama.
Good night.
Thanks so much.
This is crazy. Wake me up if you see a sea turtle.
Good night, Kayla.
Good night.
Hope you all sleep good on the. On the hard floor.
There you go.
I'm pretty sure this is the most comfortable air mattress I've ever slept on, which makes me feel A little guilty. Also, it's 1am But I'm trying to hold my eyes open as long as I can because you don't get to do this every night.
Of course. I'm the only one who couldn't fall asleep. Late night body break. Let's go see what everybody else is doing.
It.
This looks so good.
I think maybe I woke up twice. And both times I did, there was shark swimming over my head.
How'd you sleep?
Sleep? Who slept?
Callie looks like she's sleeping.
Good morning.
We have to walk and get coffee this morning.
You got you and Carola. Yeah.
Wow.
I had to sleep pretty good.
So cool. He's looking at you.
Wow. The animals are very active this morning.
Dinner.
Sorry I wasn't in bed.
I did not think we were getting coffee in the aquarium.
Coffee with the view and a diver.
It's a scoop.
Gally, what are we going to see?
It's stinky in her galley.
All right. I think we better save the best for last.
Ooh, there comes one. Looking blue. Like a hot mess.
Do you see any penguins?
Come here. Come here. See the penguins?
Wow.
Don't be shy.
Megan is her person. Though there's a lot of times that he looks like.
She's probably going to look at you.
Like she's like you touching me. I touch you.
That's fair. I love her.
Beautiful girl. Yeah.
It's like her feathers are, like, rubbery.
Yeah, they have an oil that they put on the outside feathers.
Keep them waterproof.
Thank you.
All right, time to leave. Ah, it's gold. Give Aunt Care a big hug. Bye, Galley. I had so much fun with you. You tell him thank you.
Hey, Gally, who's your favorite aunt and uncle?
Yes.
We'll take it.
He say, see you later, everybody.
See you later, everybody. I'm so scared.
You're so freezing. Okay, we'll put you in the car.
Okay. I asked Nate if I should wear a black shirt and skinny black jeans, and he said no. But look at them. They wore their black shirts and skinny black jeans.
He didn't want everybody to look like they were Texas Roadhouse server.
It's lunchtime.
Hey, what's for lunch?
She nails that last note every time. We're gonna be the aunt and uncle in, like, 30 years. Like, do you remember when we brought you to the.
I ain't waiting to do this cool stuff, but I can remember it. You wanna go in here?
Come here. I'm going here.
I don't think I can fit. I want to see your daddy get in here. Wow. Are we underwater?
We are.
We are.
What do you see?
Let's get out.
Okay.
Where is it?
It's over here.
Over there?
Yeah.
Are you okay?
Yeah, I'm okay. Are you gonna sleep in my bed? You know what time it is?
It's 9 o'.
Clock. I hear that sound.
What sound?
Daddy song and mama song.
We're gonna sing a song.
No, not a song.
I hear a giant.
Fell asleep. Just like that.
Giant kiss.
Giant kiss.
I love you, Gally.
As convincing his dad's Love you. Love you.
Whoa.
I'm okay. So, Gally, do you think you're gonna go to sleep tonight?
What do y' all think about the fact there's a drain right here?
Oh, gosh.
I don't think we make it. I really hadn't thought about that yet.
Oh, I've thought about it a lot. I thought about it a couple times. Just like YouTubers.
Yeah.
Wait, what?
And two, three.
Unnamed.
It's like another 2020.
