WE’RE FLYING BACK TO THE USA! (what’s next?)

This is a first-person travel vlog transcript by Nate and Kara Buchanan documenting their return from Mallorca to the U.S. It covers practical re-entry logistics (airport COVID test, boarding/standby complications, airline alliances), a sponsored VPN segment, and the immediate follow-on roadtrip logistics (a long drive to Minnesota and preparation for back-to-back outdoor adventures).
Chapters
Just a few hours ago, I was dragging Kara off of a solar powered yacht in the Mediterranean. And in a couple days, I'll be dragging her onto a canoe in Minnesota. Oh, my goodness. But between now and then, we have to take at least one COVID test and three flights to get back to our van in the U.S. thank you. Have a nice flight. Thank you very much. And then from there, we still have 16 hours of driving. I am exhausted just thinking about it. This will be our first time re entering the US Since COVID and things have the potential to get really interesting.
Still cannot believe our time on this island yacht has come to an end. Went by way too fast.
All right, we are leaving Mallorca and we are boarding our first of three flights home.
From here, we have an hour and a half to Madrid. And if we're really lucky, nobody sits right here.
Love you.
I love you. But fun fact. There are three major airline alliances. One World Star alliance and SkyTeam Air Europa. The airline that we're on now is part of SkyTeam, which is the only airline alliance where we don't have top tier status. So getting this extra seat is just by pure luck.
That is the bay that we slept in last night. And if you look closely, you can actually see the silent yacht in that marina. I'm so sad that it's over, but how beautiful is Mallorca?
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Madrid. Please keep your seat.
So far.
We made.
Is currently 6pm but our flight tomorrow to New York doesn't leave until 11.
This one's very heavy. Heavy.
Gracia.
Not bad.
Wow.
So this is home for the night. We have a test scheduled first thing in the morning, which means we will see you uncomfortably early.
Morning.
In order to re enter the US from another country, everyone has to have a negative COVID test. Your vaccination status doesn't matter. So I booked one ahead of time. That was here at the airport. We paid €25. If you have to stick a swab up your nose first thing in the morning.
That'S about as convenient as it gets.
Negativo.
Today just got a lot more interesting. I have bad news and I have a little bit of good news. The plane that was supposed to take us to New York was delayed by three hours. The big issue with that is we only had a two and a half hour layover in New York before flying back to Nashville.
So we're definitely missing our flight home.
I have three boarding passes for two people. There should always be an even amount of boarding passes. For two people. There was one more flight leaving for Nashville tonight, which Kara got a seat on.
I, however, did not. I currently have a standby seat on that flight and the gate agent was super nice and she said she would try until I boarded this flight to get me a seat. Hopefully Kara's not flying back to Nashville by herself tonight.
This wouldn't be that big of a deal if we didn't have to leave first thing tomorrow morning for our next adventure. Delaying a day is not an option.
I mean, we were already going to be zombies by the time we got to Minnesota.
I feel like I already am one.
What's past a zombie? But I told you there was some good news because the flight was delayed, we got a new plane and there are only three seats across in business class instead of six.
So there is one major positive from this mess.
We're flying a much nicer business class product home. That's what we're doing right now. Looking for bright spots Real quick. We want to say a big thank you to surfshark for sponsoring this video and keeping us safe with the best VPN on the Internet. If you don't know what a VPN is, it stands for Virtual Private Network and it encrypts all the data sent between our computer and the Internet so that no one can steal our personal information. On travel days like today, we are constantly connecting to public WI fi to work and upload videos. These public WI fi connections can be a gold mine for hackers, which is why it's important for us to use a vpn. But a VPN can be used for more than just security. It can also be used to unlock content that isn't available in your area. It's super easy to change the virtual location of your computer and get access to a new content library.
If you don't already have a vpn, we highly recommend Surf Shark. We've been using it for over a year now and it's the only VPN to offer one account for unlimited devices. You can use our code karandnate to get 83% off plus three extra months for free. And there's a 30 day free trial so there is no risk to try it out. Just click the link in the description below to get started.
The other perk of having a delayed flight is that we get more time in the lounge.
This lounge is big and beautiful and we're pretty much the only ones here. There could be much worse places to spend four hours, I'm pretty sure. Calories in the airport and on airplanes don't count, right? I asked for one chocolate croissant. She gave me three. She was like, please don't come back.
Okay. For a minute there, I found myself getting anxious and frustrated about this whole flight delay. And then I just had to remind myself, this is what I have been dreaming of doing for the last 14 months. Hanging out in airport lounges, flying to different countries. So whatever happens, happens. We'll figure it out later, but for now, I'm just gonna make the most of it. Really couldn't ask for a better lounge. I mean, we've been to better, but you know what I mean.
Cheers. Making the most of.
Is the moment of truth. The gate agent told me if she could get me on the flight to Nashville, she would meet me at the gate before we were boarding and hand me my ticket. Are you going to fly to Nashville without me?
I guess so. I have stuff to do.
I don't know why this makes me want to do that. We're flying in this response. Thinking about any of my troubles disguising.
Here it goes. I'm so nervous.
Hola. Hola. Do you have good news for me? No.
Good news.
Same news.
I couldn't get it. I don't know why it's not allowing me, but you are the first one on the list. Oh, that didn't sound good. I think you will make it.
Thank you so much.
Is there a ticket? Oh, standby.
Still on the standby list. But she told me there are six seats on the airplane. She just can't confirm one for me. And I'm first on the list. I can't believe I have to fly for eight hours to New York to figure out if I'm going home tonight. All right, well, we'll just continue to enjoy the experience and let our problems figure themselves out. What do they do?
Everything's gonna be fine. Here we go. This is so nice. We have a beef short rib with jasmine rice. We have a mushroom stuffed chicken breast, and we have a ricotta cheese fil Raviol. I'll do the raviol. All right, first impressions. This plane is much newer than the one we took to Europe. The business class layout is totally different. We have a ton of space and so much privacy. There's an entire wall on my right side and then a half wall on my left, so I can't even see Nate unless I go like this.
As far as the amenities go, I think they're the exact same as last time.
O and G. They gave us this super cute drawstring bag. Let's See what's inside the ST Super Cozy eye mask.
We have a United States eye mask.
I just think these stripes suit me so well. It smells so good. We also have this big cozy pillow. If you're in the mood for something more firm. We have this memory foam pillow if.
You like a more firm product.
And they even gave us slippers.
I'm actually pretty excited about these. Not one, but two blankets. What are you supposed to do with all this stuff? The TVs are nice and new. There's an insane amount of privacy. Lots of fancy buttons. This is the Polaris product that I was expecting on our last flight. Okay.
I just put my slippers on, and typically these things are like paper towels, but they're actual, like, soft slippers. I'm very impressed. And I just found a mirror. I would like to welcome this on the crash. We're happy to have you on board with us today.
Watching movies on airplanes is one of my favorite things to do.
P.S.
Cargo is a great movie. So is Bridget Spice.
And on behalf of your inter flight crew and all of us United, we like to be the first to welcome you to the work where the local time is 4pm.
I almost left in my split. Good thing you got your favorite, like.
Get off my plane, you crazy lady.
Tragic. All right, we are officially back in the U.S. my body thinks it's 11pm oh, my gosh.
It doesn't really.
And I'm still not even sure if I'm flying to Nashville tonight.
Oh, no wonder.
Okay, our flight leaves in 15 minutes. I am first on the standby list, but my seat still hasn't cleared. I don't feel like it's a good sign.
I've really been staying hopeful this whole time. But she just announced that the flight was full.
Oh, my gosh.
Are you kidding me?
I've never been so happy to be in the middle seat in economy.
We were gonna have to find a hotel tonight when we can barely keep our eyes open. Get back to the airport tomorrow, fly home, get straight in the van.
Rock, paper, scissors for business or economy? Okay, best of three.
I know you just got on here and it's so frustrating, but we're gonna pull everybody off. Grab all of your luggage with you. I think this is the first time I've ever gotten off a plan after getting off. But apparently the pilots aren't here and won't be here for an hour, so we're all getting off. This has been quite the travel day.
Just staying on our silent yacht.
While we were waiting, Kerry reminded me that this video is also supposed to be about what it's like to re enter the US after traveling internationally. But it's just been so simple that I've kind of lost that storyline. We showed our negative COVID test to get on our flight from Madrid to New York. And then once we landed here in the US it was just like re entering the country in 2019. They didn't ask to see the COVID test. We just walked into the country as usual. There's that kissy. What's curious.
Facial coverings must be worn over your nose and mouth at all times. I just looked down and realized that I still have my watch on Madrid time. And it's 2:24am it's catching up with Kara, but somebody's got to stay awake to make sure we get on this flight. Otherwise, we'd both be sleeping in these seats in the plane would be heading into Nashville. We're boarding. All right. Over two hours later, we're gonna try this again.
Go home.
I really can't believe this is happening.
Started as one hour, eventually turned into two, but now, hopefully we're going to Nashville.
We woke up in Madrid almost exactly 24 hours ago. And after seven hours of delays and a lot of time on airplanes, we finally made it to Nashville. Our body thinks it's 7am in the morning and it's midnight here. Normally, this would be where a travel day video ends, but this is just the beginning of a very long drive.
We're back.
Y' all didn't believe us, did you?
Time to pack back up for our next adventure.
Don't fit.
We got about six hours of sleep last night. Now we have about four hours to pack up the van for six weeks of crazy adventures. They involve dry bags, this whole bike helmet you might recognize, and some long distance running shoes. Let's just say it's gonna be a giant adventure in this belly that I've gotten over the last few weeks. Hopefully that'll be gone by the time it's all over.
Whoo.
All right. We're running a few hours later than planned, but the goal is to still get at least nine hours of the 16 hours of driving done today. Right now, I feel great because my body thinks it's 8pm and I should still be awake, but not counting on that lasting very long.
Let's go north.
And Tennessee. Tennessee.
Tennessee. Tennessee.
Tennessee. Tennessee.
Tennessee. Tennessee.
Kentucky.
Woo. One state down and several to go.
What is happening?
It's called a golf cart parade. We do it every Saturday. They go around Make a lot of.
Noise, get all their energy out. What in the world is happening? Where are we? That's a good question.
So we've made it like two hours north of Chicago. I'm pretty sure we're staying in a trailer park with a few campsites. What a weird night. Doing some gardening in the back.
Yeah. Doesn't that look better?
Our body's saying it's 6. 25 in the morning.
Let's have a coffee.
Where are the sheets?
Mosquitoes.
This is how you know Kara's a little jet lagged. She's functioning. Morning. Haven't even given her a coffee yet. Thank you. How do you miss this?
It's kind of fun to be back in the van. I always like it more when we have a break. I do like giant American coffees.
The turnaround time between these two trips was so fast that I'm literally unpacking and packing while Nate's driving.
Right now.
This is pretty difficult. While we're driving.
In the acony.
84 hours after leaving Mallorca, we have made it to our 33rd state of Minnesota. And tomorrow morning we are picking up the canoe that we're going to be living out of for the next six days. This is the first of three back to back to back adventures. I feel like we throw the word adventure around a lot. These are real adventures.
Yes.
Like if you enjoyed the bike trip videos last year, I think you're really going to enjoy these.
Plus I'm participating this time.
I think you've got to have the balance. Like to truly enjoy the luxurious experiences, you have to be uncomfortable and challenge yourself to be able to really appreciate those. If you just did luxurious things all.
The time, you get old.
Yeah. So we swung really far on the luxurious side for the last few videos and now we're swinging really far to the adventure aside.
Like pooping in the wind.
And we're not even packed.
This trip has the potential to get very interesting. Kind of like this shot. What's happening right now?
Not before we go get 100 Mondanitos.
Tiny sandwiches.
No talk to employee. We just ordered from the wrong chipotle.
Hello.
I just placed an online order pickup order. But I accidentally put the last Chipotle we were at in Maryland and we're actually in Kentucky right now. So I will not be there to pick it up. I was wondering if I could cancel it.
The unbridled spirit of Kentucky.
I didn't know that's what it was called.
I didn't know all states had slings. Slogans Slings. Slings. Slang slogans.
I think they call them slings in Kentucky.
I'm running on just a little bit of sleep at the moment. It.
