Developing Self Control in the Heat of the Moment

Your mind runs rival emotional programs that generate beliefs about reality. Learn to observe these programs instead of being controlled by them, so you can identify and revise the beliefs that hurt your trading performance.
Chapters
We've talked about emotional regulation, but now it's time to go a step deeper. Emotional regulation gets you to the door of the mine. But how do you get to look inside the mine? The mind.
And the way that I teach it is a community of rival programs that are duking it out. You have both competitors, and you also have cooperation within these rival programs. They're all emotional in nature.
That are organizing the self to be able to function, survive in an environment. Once you get regulated, that's the start. The next piece is learning how to look inside mind and go beyond just the body being a product of the body.
What you're looking for here is mindfulness, or what I call the observing self.
Anybody? There's a faculty within humanness call the observing self. It's a faculty all of us possess. Most of us don't know about it. We can begin to see our bodies not as just reacting to circumstances, but we can observe ourselves responding to circumstances in our life.
We don't have to be a reactive guinea pig in the world of the markets. We don't have to take the beliefs that we once held and project them on to the markets. Because what you discover very quickly in mindfulness and the observer is that you don't have beliefs, you don't have thoughts. They have you. And our job is to decide how does that happen? What are the organizations of beliefs and thoughts that organize you and you're projecting onto the markets. In neurobiology, we would say that you do not see reality. You do not live in reality. Your brain, okay, your brain takes the data.
From all these sensorial systems and creates a map, a virtual simulation.
That's what you're experiencing as the world. That's what you're seeing. That's what you're seeing as the markets every day. You're seeing the effectiveness of that virtual simulation, okay, in being able to work.
With the markets. And you see the effectiveness in your trading account. That's what's so powerful about the trading account is it really sets you free. It allows you to see. Oh, the beliefs that I'm projecting upon the markets are not accurate. For me to extract capital from the markets, I need to reevaluate. I need to look and find those beliefs, and I need to alter them to be able to be the beliefs that can extract capital from the markets. That's what we're looking for. That's mindfulness. Now, remember where we started this last time. We started from looking at emotions and understanding emotions, being able to regulate emotions. That was the first step. But here we are now, here we are now saying, okay, now that we've got them cooled down, let's step back, let's step back out of the emotions, let's step back out of the thoughts, out of the beliefs and recognize that our awareness.
And our beliefs, our thoughts are different and that you can separate the awareness. You can say.
Okay, here's the deal. This is what we'll be looking for next time. Is that what we're saying here? Is that in mindfulness what we can do is we can design.
Those rival programs into a new committee of the self, a new committee of the mind that engages the markets in a very different way, that allow you to be successful and to be able to dance and to attune to those markets in a way that allows you to take from the markets what they're willing to give.
That's what observation, that's what mindfulness can give. That's what we're looking at here. Next time we're going to be looking at, well, now that you are able to observe beliefs, what are we supposed to be observing.
Right now? What I'm inviting you to do is to develop the ability to observe.
That's what makes the difference, friends. The ability of recognizing that your thoughts and you are not the same allows you to realize, oh my gosh, this community of rival programs, I can reorganize it into higher functioning. That's of part power. That's change. What we will be looking at next time is that when you finally look and begin to see what's in there, what's inside the mind. With this great new tool of mindfulness, we're going to look at the historical internal dialogue. That's the piece that's been limiting your performances.
I hope you're with me. I look forward to next month where we talk about this historical dialogue that's limiting you. This is where your self limiting beliefs are. And you're going to recognize they're not you. They're an organization of the self that evolved before you could even think. And now it's time to look at it, deconstruct it and to reconstruct it. That's the traitor's mind. See you next month.
It.
