Leaving the Garden of Winning and Losing Mastering Your Response to Uncertainty

Randy Howell's recorded webinar (uploaded by Kardec Trader) examines how evolved emotional responses interfere with trading. He urges traders to separate self-worth from wins/losses, retrain biological reactions (diaphragmatic breathing, tension release), and build an internal 'trading committee' (ruler, warrior, caregiver) to manage uncertainty and execute a process-focused approach. He offers a group course (five meetings over two months, upcoming in January) and an individual 10-session coaching program (currently on Skype, shifting to Zoom).

We just had a computer crash. And.
So we've had this technical glitch. First, besides my apology to you, let's make sure that you can hear me, because I'm not sure if you can. If some people would just simply put some Y's in the box so that we can see that you're. You're able to hear me. And. And we're past this little particular. Bravo. Yes, thank you. Thank you, thank you. Okay. And while I'm talking, Dolores is going to be bringing up the PowerPoint that's associated with this. But we, like I said, we. Yeah, we had to switch to another computer. And it's just. It's just one of those things that happens. Okay. It's like. It's just like trading. It's like you can do everything right and you can still be wrong, and some days it just crashes on you. And here we are. Okay. We had a fallback plan then. Anyway, what we're going to be doing today, we're actually going to be talking about winning and losing and whether or not what you've learned about winning and losing in the past.
Helps you or harms you and your pursuit of becoming a successful trader, okay? That's where we're at. And in this, we're going to be looking and saying, well, you know something, how did this all get started? How did this all get started? And where it gets started is right there. Do you remember back in the days when you were looking and exploring trading and, you know, you were a little. You were a little. Okay, I'm checking this out. I'm not really sure, but the way it was presented. You know, the thing is, if you just. It's so doable and, you know, it's just a numbers game as you just learn to flow with those numbers and before you know it, you're going to be able to do really great things. Then you start live trading, you actually start risking capital, and a completely different game shows up than the one that you were prepared for. Okay. Because in that particular moment, okay. And understand Dolores is still coming to the moment of working with a very slow computer to pull up PowerPoint. Okay. So we're. We're chugging through, and I just appreciate your patience. Okay. So it's at that moment, and I see this, I see this every day with, particularly with my personal clients and stuff like that, is that they. They walked into trading and they looked at it and says, you know, something that I can see financial freedom in here because, you know, I can see it's just It's a numbers game. And if I just follow this, got a good system. You know, the thing is I. I'm going to do it and I'm going to give myself. I'm going to give myself two years, okay? And you do that and then all of a sudden, before you know it.
Your moment of winning and losing really gets challenged.
And there's a really big deal is no method, no methodology, no trading system is going to prepare you to manage the emotions that lie behind losing and failure. It's a big deal. Okay? And part of it is that they're submerged and they're not really privy to your working awareness. But what we have to do is we have to really begin to get down and start asking. Aha. We have, we have. We. We have a PowerPoint. Oh, you don't have PowerPoint. We're getting there, folks. We're getting there. So the key here is that until your performances that's you're actually doing, the act of trading actually produces winning and losing.
You are almost guaranteed to be able to have those two attach your performances and your worth as a human being. Okay. If you've ever noticed in trading is that you're going to have to. You're going to have to literally tear apart something that nature has created through evolution.
A long time ago.
Thank you. Okay, now also folks, let me know if you now see the. The PowerPoint. Yeah. And you see the guy with the blinders on it. Okay, Let me just let me know if you see that. So we know we're all rock and rolling it. How about.
Yeah, let's see.
Chat. Yes. Yes, thank you. Okay. Okay. I. We've never had quite. We've never had a presentation quite like this. So this is really new and novel to us. But the point is, is that you have to be able to discern your performances. That's all that winning and losing from your. Your inherent worth, or lack of it, I might add, as long as those things are wired together, associated together. That's the whole point, is that what you will discover, there are forces in the mind that literally. That literally are have you saying that if you lose, you are a loser. Okay? And that is a problem. So we're getting there. And.
Let'S move the slide forward. Yay. Yay. Because the big deal out of this thing is that no matter how much sense it makes that I can win in trading, you do not have control over winning and losing. And what you're trying to control in trading outcome, you're also trying to predict when Something is going to happen, and you want to win.
Because losing means failure. And to our caveman ancestors, failure meant death. The association.
Between performance, the act of hunting, the act of escaping a predator, and your worth was you were either alive or dead. So your performances and your sense of worth came very tied together. And somewhere along the line, as with human beings developed and all the lions, tigers and bears really began to. They diminished. They got wiped out by us. At that moment, there was the association between performance and failure begin to dissolve. And yet at the same time, that's wired into the brain, okay? That's part of your evolutionary psychology, or what we would call your genetic predisposition. You bring that brain into the game of trading. The difference here is that trading is you cannot control outcome. You cannot control whether or not you're right or wrong. And you also cannot control predictions as much as you want to. They're guesses, okay? And some they're very good. And if they're wrong, you need to get the heck out of it really fast. And if they're right, hey, have fun. The point, though.
You take a look at this illustration. This is probably from about 40, 50,000 years ago. And what you're looking at is, you know, they're showing a family unit here, but humans actually lived in clans. You're actually looking at other predators finding nice morsels right there. And you're looking at a guy if he doesn't perform well here, okay, There, there is trouble. There is big trouble. That's what you were bred for. That's what. That's how evolution established that link between your performances and living winning, okay? It was direct. If that guy right there fails, he's dead. That same brain in mind, that's the same brain in mind that you bring to trading. And you know, this guy, you know, he's taking these losses. Everything's going down to. To that caveman brain of his. It's like failure, failure, failure, failure. Dead, dead, dead. So of course he's going to get cranked up, he's going to get a little stir crazy and maybe revenge trade or move those stops or even that, not get into trades because, you know, if I avoid the threat, it's there. But that's the way the emotional brain thinks, okay? Your emotional brain experience uncertainty.
As vulnerability, and then it leads to confusion, and that leads directly to fight flight. Now, is that theoretical to you? Well, it's not. Who in here has ever had a problem with entry? Scared that he may lose and wanting more and more confirmation till the trade gets Away, okay? And then you see that trade get away, and all of a sudden you have this urgency to get back in if you make some money, win.
And that right there is this theory in the same way that if you're in a trade and all of a sudden it starts heading south on you or relative south to you, and it starts hitting near that hard stop of yours, and you're going, oh, my God, I can't, I can't. I can't lose. I can't lose. I can't lose. I'm going to give it room. I'm going to give it room. And before you know it, you have just absolutely dived off the deep end into the abyss. That also is caveman not wanting to lose because it meant death. Now, remember, your emotional brain that you bring with you, caveman brain and your thinking brain don't really do a lot of good communication together. And that's actually a lot of the work I do, is I understand that we need to link the two, okay? We need to relink them and build a new partnership.
You begin to see the immensity of it, okay? So look at it this way.
You have to personally separate, I mean personally too, separate your net worth or your dreams of net worth, like this guy in this image, and your self worth. Remember, nature locked them close together.
You know, I'm going to make money. If I make money, I matter.
And it means he had status. It means he was probably going to contribute his genes into the gene pool. All that stuff, that's what's sitting down inside your brain friend.
At some moment. To really good traders, a performance is only a performance, come win or lose. And it has nothing to do about your worth as a human being. That's what the really great traders talk about. And recently I was talking to one of these really great traders who has.
Truly made a fortune, I mean, a big fortune at that. And he was telling me about he wasn't doing so well for a long time. It really took him about 10 years to actually get to that place. And he had lost about a quarter of a million dollars. He was having all the worry of, oh, my God, what is my wife going to think? What are we going to do?
All the stuff that all that worry drive stuff gets into. And in some moment, he came to a realization that come win or lose, he was still inherently a good person. That wasn't going to change. And he had proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that his wife wasn't going to leave him. So he had the essentials of like his worth were intact and he was able to separate that worth as a human being from his trading. Even though there is a part of you called the inner critic that is always going to try to link the act of losing failure and making the act of losing evidence that you are a loser, okay? And that is the very piece right there that has to be separated. As a human being, you're not a loser. And depending on what religious or spiritual tradition or existential position that you come from, what you are somehow has to be rooted in your worth, okay? Whether or not you get it from looking at the way social mammalians place great value on their children, or whether or not that it's something that you feel is you've been chosen. But that's what's got to happen.
Truly what happens is that without this emotional training, the aspiring trader is just simply not equipped to separate performance from self worth. But this is where we want to go. So a lot of people end up feeling like they're under the gun. And yet at the same time, it's a conversation inside the head between a person, by an entity within you that is linking your performances to your worth. And again, that's where it has to happen. And this is what the problem is. Wait, let's see if we're going to advance this slide. Okay. Okay, here's the problem, friends, is you have a caveman brain trying to work with stuff that caveman brain was never exposed to. And when it gets scared, when it feels like there's something out there that it should urgently attack, and food, what happens, it goes into overdrive and wipes out your thinking modern mind. So the point is, this is the brain that you brought to trading is not the brain and mind that's going to create the success you're seeking, okay? And it's not about the system. There's a number of systems that work perfectly well if the person can manage the emotions and fortunately that can be trained. And the question really then becomes like this, is that what actually does create a trading system, What I want you to look at here is you're going to notice that there is a trading platform, the platform that you use to be able to drive this machine and actually trade. They're very sophisticated and if they start having glitches in their systems, it can really create havoc. But there's also, you know, that trading system also has a methodology how you're managing risk and how you're finding an edge, okay, in the randomness of the markets. And that's where most People stay, they say, you know something, I just need to find the right system, I need to find the right methodology. I'm going to learn that and somehow the money's going to start arriving and I'm going to start winning money and I'm going to start achieving all these things. What they forget is trading psychology. How do you manage the mind to bring forward? Because ultimately what most people discover, that they are themselves the weakest link in their trading system. If you can't get your head together, all these other elaborate systems that I have no doubt that you've invested really heavily in.
Are useless.
And you've got to be able to integrate it in what most people are. The last thing that they would ever possibly think about being a problem is they're trading psychology. I would actually say your biology, I would actually say that your psychology comes forward out of your biology. And fundamentally you bring an evolutionary psychology that's rooted in biology and we call that genetic predisposition. And then on top of that we have personal psychology from our families of origin, our cultures and stuff like that that help shape the mind for anything but good trading. So we're looking at that and saying these are the three pillars that it has to be. You have to establish. And yet what is it you're missing? Okay, you're smart, you're working hard, you're doing all the things that you know, this is what made me successful. I'm a really work hard, I'm not going to give up, I'm going to really, I'm going to become a good student of this. And yet you see some people just absolutely.
And it's a glass ceiling and you can see that it's a glass ceiling, but you don't know how to crack the ceiling, you don't know how to get there. And a lot of it is just simply because how would you have possibly have guessed that the emotional brain is such a powerful element of your trading system and everybody's ignored it all this time. So your brain is built for short term preservation. What does that really mean? That means that, let's go back to entry problems. Short term preservation would have you having anxiety, fear, stopping you from getting into the trade in the first place, simply because that conserves your ability to live in that moment. Okay, it doesn't care about long term, it has no perception of it. And yet trading is really all about which door. You know, am I accurate, do I execute really well? And if I have a, if I have a system that has an edge in it, and if I bring a psychology that has an edge of stable things and really focused on performance rather than outcome. What you do is you realize you work through the probabilities. Caveman can't do that. You're trying to force him or her to do that. And what you see in the performance is when you look at your trading account, you're seeing that he's not buying it. And the real question really becomes, how are you going to change that? The key is this, your ancestral mind. You take a look at this.
You have a human being, Homo sapiens, and you begin to see this highly advanced ape, maybe not even Homo sapiens yet, but getting close, and you're looking at saying, oh my gosh, this is what I brought to trading. And I'm expecting it to be facing what it sees as death and just to be calm and cool and just like, oh, it's just a loss. Just, just think about it. How crazy is that? So you've got emotional reactive pattern built into your neural circuitry that doesn't work for managing uncertainty. Simple as that. Simple as that. So here's the choice, here's the choice. You can either learn just to stay strong, determined, and never give up and sail against the wind, okay? And that's your way of attacking uncertainty. And my promise to you is your caveman brain is going to continue come up and it's going to take over, hijack the thinking mind all the time. Or you can begin to volitionally learn to control emotions and mind where you have a calm, disciplined, impartial mind and all this crazy stuff is going past. But the point is, is that what you're realizing is your mind is no longer predicting disaster or phenomenal success. It is just simply performing. And friends, that's what we want. And if you take a look at the evolution of this, I want to see this graphic. At one time we had common ancestors. It's kind of like there's less than 2% genetic difference between us and bonobos and chimpanzees. You think about a pig, they're 75%. They're actually raising pigs now where they can take out valve material and put it directly into the human and have no rejection. Now think about that. We are flesh, we are biology. And we have to acknowledge that, yeah, we've got some animal stuff enough. And if we don't deal with it, we've got problems. So what we want to do, we want to build a participation with the logic of your thinking brain and also the management of uncertainty with your, with your emotional Brain. And here's the last deal on this, when we're going to get deeper. But the key is this is the illusion that people buy into. Here's that modern guy thinking he's in charge of the brain and the mind that he's driving off into the uncertainty land. He really does. He's. That's what he's been taught. And they'll have a few blip things. Oh, yeah, and leave your emotions at the door. They'll, you know, and, yeah, you do some breathing, do some cleansing, do some.
And at the back end on that there in the background is this reactive caveman brain from anywhere from 15, 30,000 years ago, 6.5 million years ago, sitting there and it's looking at all this stuff and it's seeing the world very differently than that thinking brain does. And if excited, if threatened, it becomes an 800 bound gorilla and just creams the thinking brain and throws it away. And you wake up later going, what? What, what? What just happened? That's kind of the way it is. And so we take a guy like Spock who wants to be emotionless. But what happens is that ultimately what you discover about the, the Vulcan human hybrid is that he does have emotions. He tries to suppress them, but the key is, is that he needs Kirk as much as Kurt needs him. That's where it works together. Thinking. Yeah, that was the captain for those people are too young who remember Captain Kirk and crew and Star Wars. Star Trek. Anyway, so emotions and thinking work as a unit. They are inseparable in the same way that your perception and your action are inseparable. They are just simply flip sides of the same coin. And here's where it begins. Friends, this may be a shock to you, but there's not a world out there. What you have is you have a brain that sits inside your cranium and it's dark in there. And the only way that it actually gets any information about the outside world out there is these. These senses we have take data coming in, converted into electrical impulse, okay? And it goes into the brain. So what happens is a bunch of electrical data is showing up in the brain and the brain is trying to make sense out of it. Then it creates a best guess, okay, about what's going to happen next. All short term, okay? So understand it's the end there. Your sense of reality, your sense of when you're looking at charts, it's interesting, is that it's all happening in there. Just before I got on this evening, I was talking with a guy that I'VE worked with before, and he's extraordinary good trader and trades this with a good bit of size. And I'm working with him a couple years ago, and he pulls up a chart and he says, what do you think I'm looking at? And I look at it and I say, well, you know, I'm, you know, why don't you tell me what you're looking at? I really don't. I would really rather hear you. He said, I'll tell you what I'm looking at. I'm looking at blood.
He's looking at charts not as numbers. He's. He's even. What he's doing is he's looking to see where retail traders are getting stuck. And he. They can be shaken a little bit, get scared. Then he's.
Very differently. But he has. He's built a mind in here that interprets all this data coming in from all these senses into the brain very.
That the brain has created through emotion, through the mind's beliefs and your biases that you probably don't even know you have. So that's where we're at, friends. And let's just ask the question, what is, what is your mind? I actually take some license with David Eagleman, the extraordinary neurobiologist who basically says that the brain is a community of rival emotional programs that really duke it out to create a self, and whoever wins, wins the deal. What I would say is that as it moves from brain to mind, what you have is. You have a. Not a community. What you have is like a governing board, a governing board itself, okay, that has various. Various emotional programs that have voice and they're competitive with one another and they want to take over the direction of this company called me. And ultimately the chairman of the board has been kind of slumbering and kind of just ignorant. And he starts waking up and he realizes that he has an untrained brain. He has a mutiny going on. And this, this is where you realize this has all been going on right beneath the radar screen. It's been there. You just haven't had the eyes to see it. But this is the way the potential that you are exists as gets formed into a self. So when you're looking, when you're looking at the chart, you're not seeing the chart. You are seeing an interpretation that your brain has made in the darkness, okay? And it's projecting that onto the screen of the mind, and you're finding out if those projections are accurate or not by looking at your trading account.
Your trading account is not Going to lie to you. The beliefs that drive.
That drive each other. That's what you're seeing. And I'll give you an example. I worked with two guys who traded side by side, okay? And one of them ended up being an extraordinarily good trader, and the other one ended up being okay. It was profitably, wasn't that much. Yeah, I mean, look, I'm telling you, they had the same machines, they had the same software. They said everything was the same except for the two minds. What I want you to see is that the inward beliefs about their ability to manage uncertainty were different.
And in projecting those upon the markets, they got feedback on how accurate those perceptions, those beliefs really were. And it just so happens one was a lot more accurate. It produced a lot more. He took more capital out of the markets than he put back in. That's how it works. So you're trading your beliefs, my friends, and specifically, you're trading your beliefs about your ability to manage uncertainty. So changing your beliefs to create a new mind is the big deal. What we want to do is say, ask this question, hmm, how to go about doing that? Well, let's take a look at this. The very first thing is this stuff about winning and losing. What you'll discover is, what I teach is that losing is only landing on the wrong side of probability. It's not a failure of you as a human being. It's just landing on the wrong side of probability. That's really freeing.
As a corollary, winning is only landing on the right side of probability relative to you. That's all it is. There's no reason to get all cranked up and get euphoric and blow it all up. There's no reason in taking a loss to get shameful. It was just. It was just the wrong side of probability. And then there's only three questions that you really need to ask as a trained trader. One is, is this a method mistake? Okay, Is. Is it something I need to correct about my method? Or is this a psychological mistake, something also, by the way, correctable? Or was it just simply probability? If it's just simply probability, you just simply move on and say, okay, I need to calm down. I need to get myself regular. And at the same time, what I do is I need to learn from my failures rather than to run from them. My promise to you is that enlightenment. There's more enlightenment about turning to your darkness and mastering it than just simply basking in the light of positive thinking. Okay, so we've gotten that.
So we know that winning is the only on the right side of probability. And then what we go is. The very first thing about taming this beast is literally going, okay, how do we. How do we. How do we manage the biology of emotional reactivity? How do we do that? Well, it comes down to being able to recognize what an emotion is rather than what you thought it was. From my perspective, an emotion has two components. One is that an emotion, literally a biological action potential that is activated when there is any change in status in the environment.
I want you to see that it's biological. It's of the flesh. It's not in the mind. It's not psychological. It will absolutely ram your thinking and your psychology away. But it's biological. And it just so happens that. That because it is biological, you actually have some biological ways of working with that instead of letting it get really revved up. What you do is you learn how to breathe. You learn how to do diaphragmatic breathing. Instead of allowing yourself to hold your breath or pant. And your tension, watching your tension just. You're looking at emotional arousal cranking you up. And what you first have to learn is literally how to calm that down under pressure. You learn how to breathe diaphragmatically under stress. You learn how to relax tension when you feel stressed or even before. That's actually the first thing I teach in all my courses. Unless you do that, you never get to the door of the mind. And, friends, the door of the mind is approached by me through mindfulness, or what I would call awakening the observer. You begin to recognize something very simple. You begin to recognize that you know something.
Emotional regulation gets me to the door of the mind, but I have to develop this tool to be able to look in, to see the beliefs and assumptions that are driving my performances in trading. That's where it starts getting really interesting. Because once you do that, this is where you start inventing the observer of the self. And what you do is when you step back out of thought, you begin to recognize something, is that you and your thoughts are different from one another, that you and your beliefs are different from one another. This is powerful because everybody has been a did it. They've been saying, these are my beliefs. These are my thoughts. The truth is, no, you are not having thoughts and beliefs. They're having you. They're creating your experience. You downloaded them during brain formation in infants, in childhood, plus what you inherited through your caveman ancestors. That's what's driving. And what happens is you need to be able to see, oh, My gosh. I mean, I'm not those things. That's very important information because as you get that, you begin to realize that you can redevelop your beliefs, you can redevelop, you can challenge thoughts. And what you'll find is that most of them are lying, okay? And out of that, what you also discover is that you've got some. On this committee of the mind I was talking about, you've got some really destructive characters. You've got something that I call the inner critic. It's that which stops. Wants to stop you from being your best. It's also that part that judges you, it's that part that criticizes you. It's that part that tempts you. It's that part where when you beat yourself up.
What I'm asking you to do is quit identifying. Oh, I beat myself up. I'm saying, no, that's the inner critic beating up this adaptive part of the brain, the mind, that I would call orphan, okay? What you're seeing is that's happening every day to everybody. And most people don't like to ignore it. They just prefer ignoring it. I'm actually saying no. What you need to do is in development of observation, what you're doing is you're beginning to go, oh, my God, I'm beginning to see this operating inside my head. It was right under my nose and I didn't see it. And what I'm asking you do is you become observant of it. And just observation, you discover there is a lot of misinformation, a lot of propaganda, a lot of, like, if I just shout enough and do like that, he's going to start believing that he can't win, okay? And we'll finally give up failure. So this is what's going on in your mind in the historical internal dialogue, whether or not you like it or not. Now what we want to do is to begin to free the mind, to manage uncertainty and probability very differently than the mind that you inherited, okay? Through this observing self, what you're going to do is you're going to start reconstructing the beliefs and also engage with different inner resources living within you, okay? But first you have to be able to stand the stillness and to be able to start going, what are these elements of the self that are helping me? What are these elements of the self that are not helping me? And this is where it gets really interesting. Friends, excuse me a moment.
Because this is where the inner game comes up. This is literally when you recognize the mind is really A trading committee, and it has various forces on it, okay? And those forces really want to take you in very different directions. And you know something? A lot of people say, randy, you think I'm crazy or something with all these voices running around my head. My promise to you, if you don't recognize the very powerful forces running around your mind, you are crazy. And you are never going to master the mind that trades they there. What you discover about us as human beings is we have deep, incredible, powerful potential, empowering potential. But we also, on the other side of that, we also have a deep potential for destructiveness. Look at the world around you. You know, Star wars really had it right. There were two sides, the dark side and the light side of the Force. And what we're doing is we're saying it all comes together in your brain, okay? And you're going to have to learn how to manage that brain and build up the parts that you really are seeking to build the mind that engages uncertainty. My promise to you is this, that living within you. In the same way that there's criticism, judgment, fear, aggression living within you, every trader knows that there is also the discipline of ruler.
That ruler I define is being able to maintain order under pressure. And if you think about George Washington, boy, did he do that. The key, though, is that trait is part of your. Is literally part of your evolutionary psychology. It's in there. It just may not have been developed. Like, for instance, with me, it took a while for me to find that ruler part of myself. I grew up in a military family where.
Having a young ruler show up would get you in a lot of trouble. Let's just say that, okay. It would get you in a lot of trouble. So I learned to push that part of myself away. And it didn't become a dominant part of me. And it took a long time to find that part, to nurture it, to bring it to where it's in part of my working awareness, okay? Instead of running around the background, only showing up when it's needed, you also have the courage of a warrior. You have the capacity of turning toward your fear and mastering them. You're going to have to anyway. Trading just makes it impossible to ignore.
A lot of people will stay in habits that are highly destructive for long periods of time, and then they're caught. I have a friend who is a surgeon, and he said, randy, you know, you're so right. This is exactly what happened to a client. I went in and he was a patient. Yeah, patient. They call him patients. And it just so happens he had diabetes. And Jerry made sure this guy understood that he really needed to take care of his body, he needed to take care of his sugar levels. He needed to do all this or he was going to lose a leg. Well, he didn't. And what happened is Jerry took his leg. Then he said, look, you really need to start taking care of this long term. You're in dangerous situation. You need to face this thing and do it. Well, he didn't. And lost his other leg. The man never had the courage to face the demon that lived within him. And until you face it, you can't master it. You're not going to say a bunch of visualizations and affirmations and energy releases and get rid of this stuff. It's there. It's part of your inheritance from our genesis. Your job is to master it. And one of the ways you master it literally is that you become, you find the self compassion of a caregiver. Instead of beating yourself up after a loss or feeling powerful after a win, what you do is you have compassion for yourself. Compassion is the only emotion that allows you to go into a belief system the way it's like locked into neural circuitry and to tease it apart. The emotion does this. Think about it, it's crazy. It teases it apart and allows it to reorganize that circuitry into higher functioning with better beliefs about the cell. So you don't get past, let's just say, say this compassion, self compassion from basically trading is the engine of survival. Unless you employ it and become skillful in its use, directed at the self changing old beliefs that are just rocking your trading account are not going to happen. And it is one of the most difficult things in the world. Many traders can have compassion for others, but they can't have compassion for themselves. It has to be developed. Otherwise you never get to the impartiality of a sage. Because ultimately the only peace of mind that you want trading is disciplined impartiality. Okay? The caregiver and the warrior are there to confront the destructive part of the self, that which I call inner critic. And the caregiver to nurture, to encourage. So everybody's got roles in this board of directors, but the ruler has to show up. He has to wake up and start taking command of the gift that he's been given. Okay? That's the way it works and what it, when you really put it together. And I, by the way, I use a system of like memory enrichment to be able to get that where we're taking actual experience and Pulling it forward.
There we go. And what does it look like? I'm not. I'm not saying you're going to have nirvana. The thing is, is your mind is tested by the challenges of living, by the challenges of uncertainty. What you're looking for as a team, that. That trading committee, okay, that mine, what you're looking is for that team to work. You have a captain who is directing the talents on. On the boat. You have warriors that have to face that angry ocean. You have caregivers who are calming people down. You have all that, and you have somebody that's thinking clearly as these guys go through really rough seas, that becomes a successful team, that becomes a successful mind. Okay. Basically, the mind is a fractal of this team concept. And what you're doing is you're saying, I have to develop each of these parts. I once worked with a guy who was a flight engineer on a giant cargo jet called a C5. It's our C7 17. They're like a flying football field. You put like 10 tanks in them, a battalion of men to go fly them someplace. And he said, you know something, those things are really difficult to fly. And it takes five people to be able to be able to fly that thing. He says, before we get and fly, we have meetings where we go on what the plane's been doing lately, what we expect, all this. We prepare for the event of flying that machine. It's not an accident when they get on. They know the history of that machine. They know the tendencies. They also know what's going on with them. And he said, you know, I thought that it was me who was confident and disciplined, but I realized the Air Force had spent a lot of money on me and these team members to find us who could work together and to pull it together so we could fly that machine in the same way. Said, what I found is that I was depending on that. When I got into trading, what I finally realized is that there is an internal team that has to be developed. He says, I now use the flight planning, the flight, meeting that concept. He actually had his helmet that he used flying and stuff like that to be able to develop and access these particular parts of the self, these inner resources, so that he can develop the mind that could in fact, trade the work in probabilities. And what that looks like. What that looks like is a calm, stable, disciplined, patient mind. You bring a mind focused on performance to the act of trading. Notice. It's focused on performance and execution. It's not focused on winning or losing.
What I've noticed is I follow Alabama and Georgia football, okay? And what I've noticed when you. When you talk with. With Saban or you talk with Kirby Smart, their coaches, what you discover is they're not worried about winning and losing. They're really focused on execution. I saw Kirby Smart just take a. Dress a guy down because he didn't execute well. And what the guy was. You had a. He was. He was covering for another guy who broke assignment. And in breaking that assignment, a guy got open and Kirby was demanding that he stay in process, stay in execution. It's the same thing with the trading mind. It has to stay in process. It has to stay in execution. You don't know if you're going to win or lose, but having the right mind there is going to give you the best chance of winning that you're ever going to have. That's the point, friends. That's the point. And out of that, what we're really saying is you're going to have.
You're going to have a governing committee.
No doubt about it. It's going to happen. And the real question is, who are going to be the players on that trading committee? Or are you just simply going to deny that there's a committee inside your mind and say, well, I just gonna. I'm just gonna go in there and do some stuff? No. What happens is, as you develop the talent within the self, those inner resources, who is going to be there? My promise to you is the destructiveness of the inner critic is going to be there, waiting for an opportune time. My promise to you is the fear, the aggression, response to uncertainty of your adapted voice. Caveman is also going to be there. You can't stop them, but you can decide whether or not you want to bring in other talents and develop it so that you have a different way of engaging the uncertainties of life. And, friends, it comes down to being a choice. My promise to you, if you've ever looked at the success rate in trading, it's dismal. And people keep insisting, keep insisting, keep insisting. And yet what they do is they keep failing, failing, failing, but they don't learn from the failure. They want to cover up the failing because they're too scared to acknowledge. They're too shameful to acknowledge. And yet the guy who walks on the right recognizes that, okay, if I fail, first of all, it's not about my inherent worth. I may feel shame, but shame is an emotional program that's telling me that the way I'm currently organized is not Working for the good of the whole. And the confusion you feel when you feel shame, all that real bad feeling is literally the deconstruction of a self, friends. Do you realize that the shame is doing you a favor? It's deconstructing the self so that you can reconstruct the self to higher standards, the better beliefs to trade from. You don't have to follow the crowd over the side of the mountain. That's the way it works. And it really is really up to you. The trading gods really don't care, okay? You just have to decide whether or not it's just pure, powerful stuff. Trying to ignore your emotions is going to work or whether or not you're going to build an emotionally intelligent mind that can deal with the kind of situation, the uncertainties that trading presents. Your caveman brain will not do that. And you can't just stuff him because he will explode on you. So that's the deal, friends. And my question is, how do you become the change?
First of all, if you are not very familiar with me, I want you to go to my website, get my free book, Just get all the free stuff. I have over 200 videos on YouTube. I have people who spend weekends on Randy Howell fonts. Go and do that, really explore. I have articles. And then, you know, if you're really still just kicking the stuff, get my book, start really beginning to recognize what process I use to teach this level of change. And then at some moment, it comes down to training. And we have two devices. One is a group meeting. Our next one is in January, a group course where we meet for five times over a period of two months. And you learn the basic skills of how to recreate the mind that engages uncertainty so that you can be engaging uncertainty from a disciplined, impartial mind. And it is, it is. It's incredibly well received. We already have about half the slots for January filled. That's how popular it is. And if you look at that and really explore on the website and say it's for you, I would encourage you to get in early because the first part is about literally learning how to diaphragmatically breathe under pressure and to maintain that breathing as you're engaging the pressures of trading. And it really should take about a month or two to get right with that. So you retrain the body, okay? And otherwise, when you get there, you're going to get overwhelmed. We give a free gift. We want you in early. We want you studying. We want you to be able to get the best you can out of this course. So we give you a free gift about emotional regulation workshop for that. The other one and it, it's a great course. I, the other one is basically the individual course and it, what it really comes is with me it's more comprehensive, it's much more personal in terms of really getting at the self limiting beliefs that are stopping you from achieving what you know is possible for you. And ultimately it lasts. It's 10 sessions with me and right now it's on Skype but it's, it's shifting over to zoom. So it's really personal. It's right, we were just right in front of each other talking and like I said, it gets very comprehensive, very powerful. Those are the two real when it really comes down to it. And by the way, that individual course is more like a graduate level course. It's got mixed media in it. It just, it's really, it's, it's, it's a very in depth thing. So the thing is, is this really comes down to are you willing to change who you are to become what you want? My promise to you, 98% of people who get into trading are going to, are going to be gone in three years. They're going to blow out their capital, they're going to blow out their time and only at the end do they realize, oh man, I really looked at, I wish I'd looked at that psychology. What I'm encouraging you to do is this is train the mind in the same way that you train with your training system. Okay? Somebody's got to drive that machine and it better be someone with a psychological edge for performance. Friends, that's it. This is how you become the change. I want to thank you for bearing with us while we work through this breakdown we had and I appreciate it and I know that we're really out of time, but if there's one or two questions, I'll be happy to answer. Answer any. Yeah, we have to find out if we can even access them. Okay. Questions.
Thank you, Randy. Thank you, thank you. See you on Monday. Okay, that's, that's something else. Okay, I don't see any. So what I'm going to do is say, wow, I must have done a really great job.
This should have taught me much more. Are those.
You should have taught this from the beginning. Yeah, that is true. I will be the first one to admit that what is really tragic actually the time that I think that this type of work needs to be taught is when you actually experience live trading where you're risking capital okay. Before then, you know, it's just a video game. There's a restart button and you go on and then stuff like that. But when you hit the real money, that's where it starts. Good question. Shouldn't removing. See the blue. Okay, okay. Hey Randy.
Shouldn't removing the human mind from trading solve the caveman brain and problem and keep messing trading up performance. Well, what do you think you're going to do if you remove the emotional brain? Okay, you're dead. You're stuck with this thing as long as you breathe. The question is, is there is no way out of emotion? You are an emotional being who rationalizes. Okay. You are not a rational being.
Who has emotions. You are an emotional being. They probably are slapping you around, you wouldn't notice it. But the thing is, is that you are an emotional being, period. Remember, an emotion in neurobiology is a biological action potential that coordinates action anytime there is a deviation in the environment. So anything, any change trading wise, you know.
Every stick that happens, every movement that happens is generating a change in environment and produces emotion that until you die, that's not going to change. Okay. So what I ask, I encourage you to do.
Is to literally decide that you're going to train your brain for something totally different than what it was designed for. First.
The ability to manage and execute under the conditions of stress. Okay, I thank you friends and may God bless you and may you trade. Well, okay. Good luck. Thank you.
