Welcome to Hawaii. Now, what I want to do is talk about emotions and talk about how to use emotions. Almost everybody starts out by saying, you know something? I want freedom from emotion. I want to trade without emotion. But no, friends, that's not going to happen. There is no such thing as freedom from emotion, but there is freedom of emotion. The deal is you need to become an intelligent consumer of emotion. Let me give you an example of that. I want you to imagine for those folks who have problems pulling the trigger. I want you to imagine you're sitting there watching, watching and watching and watching. Suddenly, a setup starts organizing. You start getting confirmation. As you're doing that, do you feel your breath change? Do you feel tension in your body? Do you feel yourself holding your breath? Do you feel yourself skipping a beat? Yeah, that's an emotion. You want that to happen. That's telling you that your autonomic nervous system is functioning just fine, that you've just entered uncertainty, okay? And it's triggering to startle or surprise. What happens next is vital. The autonomic is working fine. It can either trigger.
To fight flight, what's known as the sympathetic nervous system. That's when you go bananas. Or it can do parasympathetic calm down. Or it can go in the middle and blend the two so that you have states of arousal. But the mind is alert, focused, ready. But the body is calmed down, friends, that's what you have to learn to do to use emotions intelligently. Back to this example. You're sitting there and you notice this, and you go, oh, my autonomic system's fired. Okay? I know that. I now know that I need to manage that so that it stays at a point where my mind is alert, focused, and ready, but my body has not been triggered to fight flight yet, friends, that's when you're able to look at it and say, okay, I can manage the emotion. Not only can I calm the fear down, what I can do is I can call forward an emotion called concern.
In there. I'm disciplined, I'm patient. I'm ready. I'm looking, and I have my act together. My body's not trying to push me instinctively to fear. I don't have to look at that setup as something biologically dangerous to me. What happens is that, no, there is risk, okay? There is uncertainty. I need to be concerned. I need to be alert, focused, and ready, but not triggered to fight flight. Ultimately, whether or not you like it or not, neural information is going to come into the limbic system, go into the thalamus and it's going to go through an instinctive appraisal. That appraisal is where you need to show up. It is designed by default to interpret negatively, to interpret as if there's biological danger everywhere. Caveman. However, in trading, that's not so. There are no lions, tigers and bears. What there is is uncertainty and risk, which, by the way, your brain's not designed for. It wants to control outcome. It wants to control environment. However, it can't. However, at this moment of appraisal, if you calm that emotion down and if you learn how to call forward different emotions into that space, what happens is you don't have to trigger to fight flight. What you do is you trigger to say in a trained way, discipline, impartiality. This is where the appraisal then by the thalamus allows it to go to the higher brain. That's what you want in trading, rather than hijacking it, moving it over the amygdala and acting from aggression.
Or flight. Okay, it's very simple. If you can go in and change that, you have everything.
That's what you can learn to do. You first notice it is that when the autonomic triggers, what happens is that very obviously the body's going to become involved, it's going to get tense, the breath is going to change, the. The heart's going to accelerate. Those are your clues. You want that to happen, but you don't want it to go over a particular moment and it falls over to fight flight. You want it in this area where your mind is concerned. It's focused, it's ready. That's what you train. And if you want to learn how to do that, come to our webinar. Think about our group course. It's a great group course. In January, read the article that comes with this. Go to the website and read, read, look and see how you can go about designing the mine from the one that you brought to trading. Caveman brain that becomes the one that can be successful in trading. That's what you're looking for, friends. It's there on the website. Come and take a look. Learn how to build a trading mine that manages probability rather than trying to control outcome. That's the key. It's a learnable thing. It's called emotional intelligence. Come and learn.
