Are you Needy for Clients? 3/5

Katie McManus (business strategist and leadership coach) presents the third installment of a short live series for coaches titled “Are you Needy for Clients? (3/5).” She argues that visibility is the key fix for being "needy"—either you’re visible in the wrong places (e.g., private Facebook profile) or you aren’t visible at all. She shares two illustrative anecdotes (a Prosperous Coach case study about an ex-military coach who enrolls only a few very-high-value clients; her own failed experiment asking 100 strangers on a San Francisco street corner for free 30-minute coaching calls) to show what not to do, then issues a practical challenge: post something public and discoverable (LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest) and follow her upcoming Instagram lives (Katie.the.coach). Tone is candid, practical, and encouraging.

Hello, I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and leadership coach, and I'm just going to show you. Here is the demon puppy, Luna. Luna. She is throwing a temper tantrum, and I have been trying to get her to stop, but she won't. So we're just going to make that a part of the show tonight. And she's now barking at her own reflection in the window. Anyway, tonight is our third installment of my series. Are you needy and desperate for clients? And I want to start this off every single night with an acknowledgment. We've all been there. We've all been needy for clients. We've all started somewhere. Luna. It's okay. It's okay. It's just you in the window. It's just you in the window. It's. Yeah, that's. You see? Yeah. Okay. Anyway, hi, everyone. We've all been there, okay? We all had to start somewhere tonight. I want to talk about something that is such a simple fix. If you're not doing this, you can start doing this tonight. There's literally nothing stopping you. If you're needy for clients, there are two things I guarantee are happening, or one of two things. One is you're being visible, but you're being visible in the wrong places. And, yes, I'm talking to you. Those of you who are posting to your private Facebook profile and not getting clients out of it, I want you to remember, the organic reach from your individual profile on Facebook is really, really limited. Okay? So unless you're trying to enroll your friends and family and former high school friends into being your client, it's probably not going to be super effective. So you want to show up and be visible in places where people can discover you. Finally. The other thing that may be happening is you might not be being visible at all. You might have just gotten a certification or gotten the training or whatever and decided, okay, well, that's it. Like, I'm open for business. And then crickets. Nothing happens. And of course nothing happens. You have to be visible. And I'm going to keep this live short tonight. And hi, whoever's watching, welcome. Happy Wednesday. I do like this to be interactive, so if you have any questions, please do pop them in the comments. Luna. She's licking my leg. Anyway, so you cannot be a secret and a success at the same time. And I'm gonna pause. I wanna. I wanna talk about this book that, you know is really big in the coaching world. It's called the Prosperous Coach. I love portions of this book. Okay. I Love that it pushes for coaches to try charge what they're worth. I love a lot of things about it. However, it has one case study in there about a coach. Doesn't really. I don't think they name him, but ex military, enrolls four private clients a year and only does so if they have, like his secret business card and if it's passed to them, wouldn't that be nice? You know, and each one of these clients, I think, pays between fifty and a hundred thousand dollars. Wouldn't that be lovely? I would love that if that were my business. However, it takes a lot to make that your business model, okay? It takes the right connections, it takes the right personality, the right experience, the right value prop. And I don't know about you, but I'm not hanging out with billionaires who are just gonna get my secret card passed to them anyway. So you can't be a secret and success same time. And if you're trying to be or just like really, really like trying to will it to happen, you're just going to frustrate yourself, and I don't want that for you, okay? So you have to be visible. And when I say visible, I don't mean you have to be like me and go live every stupid night, okay? That is just a choice that I make because I like being on camera. I like talking to you guys. It makes me feel like I'm not just in this little echo chamber by myself, you know, Know, typing away. It makes me feel like I'm giving you access to get to know me a little bit. That is me. You do not have to do video. You do not have to do any medium that makes you uncomfortable. What you do have to do is you have to show up, okay? So if you're a really good writer and you want to do text only, do text only, okay? If you do love doing video and you're a terrible writer, do more video. Okay? If you are really talented graphic designer and you can play around on Canva and create things like that, do that. The key here is you have to be visible. Now, there's the good way to be visible where you're speaking to your audience and you're really specific about the problems that you help them solve and how you help them solve them. That's amazing. But I want to tell you a little story about, like, it's an example of what you should not do to be visible. And this is literally what one of my coaches made me do when I started getting a little parched. It's very Dry here. Anyone else in the Northeast where the air is just super dry all of a sudden, now it's cold. Anyway, so going through coach training, signed up with this coach. I absolutely adored him. He was an amazing coach, although he didn't. It had been a while since he had started his business. It had been like 20 years. And so, you know, I was going to him and asking him for advice on how to get clients. And his advice and the challenge that he gave me was literally to go and stand on a street corner in San Francisco. I can't make this up. And to offer to anyone walking by, to every soul walking by, to offer them, to try to get them to book a 30 minute free coaching call. Not even a sales call, just a free coaching call. And I did it. I did it. I stood on a street corner in Soma by Simple Greens, the salad place, because I figured at least people would be on their way to like a healthy lunch, like they might care about themselves a little bit. And I asked 100 people in two in two days, so 50 each day if I could give them a free coaching call. Now the point of this was to get me used to hearing the word no. It worked great because no one said yes. And I want to like, hey, like, oh my God, the crazy shit that we're willing to do when we are so passionate about what we do and we want to get out there. And also this is the reason clients sign on, on with me. This is the reason that people sign up for BYOB with me. Because I would never, I never tell my clients to go and stand on street corners trying to give away their work. There are far more elegant, safer and effective ways to get high paying clients. And yeah, that don't require sunscreen or pepper spray anyway. So if you're feeling needy and desperate for clients and you're not showing up, you got to start showing up. And I don't care what this looks like. My challenge to you this evening is to go and just post something in a place that is discoverable. Okay? So I'm talking LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok, I know, crazy Pinterest. I don't care where you're going to go. And you're going to post something that is public that people can discover. Okay? And if you're not posting, just post something. Just post something. Okay? Again, you cannot be a secret and a success at the same time. And that doesn't mean you have to do a ton of video. It just means that you have to get out and you have to be visible. Okay, so that is one fix for. For getting over being needy for clients. Because once you're visible, people will see that you're open for business and will hopefully, you know, send you a DM and say, hey, you're taking clients. It's the first step. I'm going to be going over a couple other steps that you can do to move past this needy and desperate stage of your business. I know it sucks. And let's get you out of here tomorrow and on on Friday night. Tomorrow's Thursday. Tomorrow, Thursday. And on Friday. Tomorrow, Thursday. I am only going to be going live on Instagram, so. So if you don't follow me yet, you'll want to follow me. Right now, it's Katie.the.coach on Instagram. And I'll be going live for about an hour, maybe, maybe 45 minutes. We'll see. Anyway, thank you so much for joining me this evening. I hope it was helpful. And I can't wait to talk to you all tomorrow. Bye.
