Katie McManus coaches Susan on launching one-on-one resume workshops. They cover email outreach strategy: personalize messages to past contacts, use a five-email sequence about pain and desire, stagger sends before going public, and switch to ActiveCampaign for list management. Susan's audience is roughly 40 people.
Questions this video answers
Approximately 40 people.
Five emails.
First on Monday; second on Wednesday; third on Friday; fourth on Sunday; fifth on Tuesday.
Open to the public the following Tuesday (after a 24-hour head start for prior contacts).
ActiveCampaign.
Hello.
Hey. Hey.
How's it going?
All right. I'm tired, but up here.
Welcome. What are you celebrating today?
Being slow but steady.
Yeah. Love it. Slow. But study on what?
I still have made progress on, like, my to do list, and I've pretty much have done what I said I was going to do on Monday. So I'm happy and proud about that. I'm not going as fast as I'd like and get more done than I would like, but I'm also knowing that I need to give myself grief because, yeah, I started my period, it's day two, and it's really heavy, and I just want to rip out my ovaries. So I'm honoring that. That I'm not just pushing through, trying to do work when my brain is not there to. To do it.
Yeah. You know, the concept of productivity the way we know it is based off of patriarchal, puritanical beliefs that are meant to control people who aren't, you know, male and straight and middle class, so.
Exactly. Exactly. So that's really what I thought about, too, is, you know, I'm just not comparing myself because, you know, last week I did a whole bunch of crazy stuff, so it's like, you know, that's. It's okay not to. And even then, I'm still making progress. It's just I'm not going at the. The same speed. So. So, yeah, so I thought what I would do is I wrote a text to send out to the client list, potential client list that I have, about the one on one resume workshops.
Right.
I wrote it, I threw it, slapped it into Chachi PT to try to clean up, and then now I don't like how it sounds. So I just thought, great, I'm meeting with you today. I'll just let you read it, and then also we can workshop it.
So let me share. Let you share your screen. Okay.
Well.
So how many people are you sending this to?
I need to add some more to the list, like to update it, but it is, I guess, 40 people.
Okay.
So.
Okay. So right off the bat, you know, you do a beautiful job of explaining what it is, but what we need to focus it on is the reader, the person who's receiving this. Like, what's going on for them? Do they want to change their job in the new year? Do they want to apply for a promotion? How. How are they being held back right now? Right. And so that way it feels like it's more about them than about the thing.
Yeah, Right.
Because they can. They can buy resume stuff Wherever. Right. So, you know, especially since, I mean, I know 40 is a lot to customize, but what I would do is I would send. I would have like a customizable portion at the beginning, you know. Hey Doris, you know I was thinking about you today because I remember our conversation from six months ago. I know you were thinking about a job change, but it wasn't really the right time. And you know, coaching seemed a little like, like it wasn't the thing that you needed at the time. Or this.
What?
Whatever. But I'm rolling out this new thing. It's a rave.
No, it's like, I mean, he hears me talking and I'm sitting here taking up space and then he's leaving the room and cutting off the light. I, I shouldn't even admonish him for that. He's like his mother. He usually leaves on light, so I should actually be clapping. Then he turned off a light.
Anyway, I wanted to give you early access because I designed this thinking of you, blah, blah, blah, based off of, you know, your complaint about this, this and this and this. I don't normally offer these, but I'm rolling out a limited amount of these sessions where we'll sit down one on one and redesign your, your resume. And then I would go into. So in this personalized session, you'll walk away with a professional resume. It sounds like Chat GPT wrote that.
But that's why I tried to clean it up with Chap GPT and I was like, ew, ew, ew.
So, yeah, so Chat GPT is always going to make it sound more robotic rather than less robotic.
Yeah. So and we, and also possible. Yeah. And even then it's not like I tried hard enough. I could have given it more directions as well.
And I mean it's, it's. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So.
So there are two ways we can do this. We can have it be kind of like a full on sales letter that has all the information about it and you're kind of like shoving it at them and then you're having a follow up from that. Or we can use it as like just a feeler, you know, offering these like, as a, as you know, first and foremost to the people I've already spoken with like you that you know, I would love to help get a new job. If you're interested in more information, then just respond back, you know, flamingo, and I'll send you more, more details because that way you, you know that they're.
Interested.
And you can kind of send them like a PDF Breakdown of what's in the session and then the link to buy. And that way you can follow up and ask them questions, you know, like, you know, was, you know, what about, like, if they didn't buy, then like, why? No. So that's, that's kind of the way. But let me just think for this. Okay, so what I would. And also depending on your energy. So what I would do is I would actually do like a series of five emails. I would do this version, make it more personal. And then I would do. The second email is pain based. Where you're building the pain around having a shitty resume and knowing that you need to get it cleaned up before you apply for the promotion or for the other job. And all the problems that go into that, like all the hesitancy, all the frustrations, all the fears. I would do the third email based on their desire, you know, that they have a resume that not only represents everything that they stand for, all of their skills and talents and makes them seem like the perfect cultural fit for the companies they want to work in. But, like, how good it'll feel walking out of that interview feeling like, oh my God, like, I aced it and I got in the door because they understood what I could bring to the table. And like, just knowing, like, even if you, for whatever reason, you don't get this job, you know, you can use this resume over and over and over again to get interviews just like that. Right. The fourth one would be a testimonial or case study. And then the fifth one would be more details, more details about what the session is and going back to the first one where you're kind of just giving them all the information. I would say I'll be giving you more information over the coming week. Right. Because in each one of those, like, you know, the second through fifth email, you'll have a link for them to sign up and buy. In the first email, I would say, hey, listen, I'm going to give you more information and the link to buy, you know, in the coming emails or in the coming week. But if you want to grab this before anyone else, because we've spoken before, then respond back to this and I'll send you the link to grab your spot. And I would have. How many people do you have on your email list again?
Okay, so, yeah, cool. So it's, it's.
So I don't have like an email sending thing because I usually just send it to one by one. So what email thingy should I use?
I really like activecampaign I don't know that you necessarily need to do that with this. I mean it's, you're just copy and pasting the email 40 times to 40 people. But going forward we do want to get you set up on that because we need to start building your email.
List.
Because that way when people download a lead magnet from you, then you know that they're interested or if they sign up for a workshop.
No.
So wait, so you've. But you've done webinars before, right? And you've done pop up trainings that people have registered for. So where did those emails go?
They are still living. I just didn't put those like in the same place. So the 40 that I have is just like people that I've done an introduction call with.
Okay, got it. Yeah. Because anytime you do a webinar or a pop up training or anything that people have to register for to show up, that's you building your email list.
Yeah. And I know people talk about email lists. It's just I'm always like I don't know what to send an email about. So I never really worried about doing anything with those emails before this point.
Yeah. So we're, that's going to be our next big thing is for you to start building your email list because that's going to give you, I mean that's going to give you a pool of people to pull from.
Okay.
They're going to be that, that like I want to keep tabs on you because I like you and I like what you stand for. But I'm not quite ready to change my job yet. Right. So I like ActiveCampaign for that. It's really intuitive. I know how to use it. So if you get stuck, I can show you how to use stuff. Yeah, I, I just think that the capabilities it has are really strong.
Okay, so good.
Yeah.
Good, good. Yeah. Then I'm not gonna overthink it. I'll just get this and then, and also it's good because like obviously I don't want to piss off people. So it would be good just to have an opt out button. So.
Yeah, but I mean like going forward in your, in your booking thing. Sorry. I'm like shedding driving me.
Nice. I, I added this now.
Okay, cool, awesome.
I updated it this week.
Cool, cool.
So yeah, going forward then this they will know that they signed up but since they didn't know before, I feel a little bit like I wanted, I don't want them to not have a button to click and Then them feel like, God, this crazy lady is just spamming me, so.
Totally. Yep.
Because I hate emails, and so I just assume everyone else hates emails too.
It's so funny. I love emails. I'll discover something, and then I'll be like, let me sign. Where do I sign up for their email list so I can remember that they exist?
And I feel overwhelmed by email. I feel like I will delete a hundred, and then all of a sudden, 200 more show up. I just feel constantly bombarded by emails and. Yeah.
So journalist background, because you probably got so many emails.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't actually know how I. I think I just accepted the chaos right. During that time, whereas now I'm just like, oh, my God. Yeah, you're right. I did get a lot of emails. Like, really? Like at least 50 per day.
Yeah. So, I mean, know that you're not. I mean, you're not alone, but you're also not the norm.
Yeah. And that's why I think it's hard for me with everyone's like, email marketing works so great. And I'm like, who the fuck does it work for? I hate email. I like, if I get, like, an email, I'm. I'm upset. I don't know what to do with it.
Yeah.
I one time paid my assistant to just go and unsubscribe me to everything. And she goes, well, how do I know what's important? And I was like, nothing's important. If it's important, I will track it down and resubscribe, but trust me, nothing is there important.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's funny. I had to tell my VA to stop unsubscribing me from stuff.
No.
Like, how am I gonna remember that they exist if I don't get an email from them once a week?
Yeah. This is what I. This is actually, ironically, what I've done for Instagram. I follow people on Instagram that I want to remember that they still exist. But then the algorithm me up, and I don't see some of those people anymore, so.
Right, right, right. Yeah. Well, that's why I sign up for their email list.
Yeah. But then how do you go through all those emails? How does, like, things not get lost? Wow.
I mean, they do, but they're less likely to get lost in my inbox than they are or as lost as they will if they just exist out there in the world and I'm just relying on my memory to think of the person's name.
No.
You know, true.
Okay. All right. So how Often will I send this if I'm going to do five emails.
So what, say the 14th?
It's Thursday.
I would send the first one on Monday, I would send the second one on Wednesday, the third one on Friday, the fourth one on Sunday, and then the fifth one on Tuesday. And then I'm. Yeah, because you don't want to get lost in the Black Friday shenanigans and you don't want to compete in the Black Friday shenanigans. Yeah.
And then when will I open it up to the public?
So I would open up to the public next Tuesday. I, I would give people who you spoke to, spoken to, say 24 hours. You know, hey, listen, I'm giving you a 24 hour head start on, on grabbing one of your, one of these sessions before I announce it to the world at large. You know, it creates that urgency. And really, when we're thinking about urgency, we want to create the urgency around, like, how much longer do you want to wait before you make a change?
Right.
And how many, like, how often have you thought that you should be updating your resume so that you can at least apply to jobs? And how long, how long are you going to let yourself get away with this excuse? You know, how much longer do you want to stay here? Because the longer you wait on this one piece, like, the longer you're going to end up staying here, the longer it's going to take for you to get the next job. And actually, like, you could miss some incredible opportunities that come up over the next few months if you don't have your resume ready already.
Yep.
You see what I mean? Yeah. Yeah. Because people are more likely to act from their own urgency than they are from your urgency.
Yeah, yeah, of course. It's just putting it into perspective.
Yeah. And then you can also use very similar language from. I mean, you could, I mean, you could honestly copy and paste portions of the email into your posts, you know, or you could even break them up. Like, you could do an announcement post on Tuesday, the day after you send the email that has a lot of what you included in that email. And then on Wednesday you could do a portion of what you included in the pain email. Right. And then on Thursday, you could revert back to other details you left out from the, from the Monday email into your detail post and so on and so forth. And you could just really, like, flesh it out that way.
Okay, good.
And I might even, you know, if you have some free time, go through everyone that you've DMed previously who maybe like, got Back to you, but didn't schedule or whatever and just say, hey, listen, want to touch base with you? I'm offering this one time thing. I have limited spots available, but I know you were curious about changing jobs previously. You know, if you need help with your resume, you know, this is an option for you, and if you want more details, let me know.
Good. Good. Okay. All right. I think I will try to do this on Friday, and then depending on if I get the first one done on Friday, then I'll drop it in heartbeat, but if not, and I ended up doing it on Monday, then I will just. Then I'll just go ahead and send it out on Monday.
Okay.
And try to get the other ones organized for. For you to review beforehand. Perfect. Cool. I'm just looking because I'm trying to be realistic since I have two sessions tomorrow and since I feel quite drained these days. So, yeah, I'll try to do that and then if not, do it Monday morning.
Okay, cool. The first one's going to be the hardest because you're going to want to customize to each person as much as. So don't stress about the rest. Like, I. I foresee you having more energy to do those than that first one, you know, next week. And like, if you get it sent out later on Wednesday, that's not that big of a deal.
Yeah, right. Yeah, exactly. So. Okay.
Yeah.
All right.
Okay.
I think I'm going to let you go because you.
You're really feeling that shitty. Oh, Susan, I'm so sorry.
Like, I. I wish before I came here, I took a nap and I had a heating pad on, like, on my stomach, so I knew I had questions about this. I was like, just muster it together or the time to work on this and get feedback on this and then go back and lay down. So. Yeah, no, no, I really do want to cut out my ovaries. Okay. All right.
I don't. I mean, I support you in whatever choice you want to make with your body, but I hope you feel better.
Thank you. And thank you for, like, you know, believing and. And saying that it's my choice for my body. That that means so much, especially in this day and age, you know, because who knew. Who knew this would be such a radical idea?
I know, I know. Yeah.
Yeah. Anyway, well, yeah, enjoy the rest of your time. I hope you go and do something nice for yourself. I am just gonna go park myself back on my couch now, so. Okay. All right.
Well, you know where to find me if you have any questions.
Yep. We'll speak later. Thank you.
Feel better. Bye.
