Confidence, Inexperience, and Business

Katie McManus (business strategist and money-mindset coach) presents a live talk arguing that lacking confidence in starting or running a business is typically a symptom of inexperience and knowledge gaps — not an immutable personal defect. She contrasts confidence-focused self-help messaging with the practical need to learn skills (selling, marketing, offer design, tech/setup) or hire someone to fill those gaps. Uses everyday analogies (learning to ride a bike, juggling knives) and critiques school systems for not teaching entrepreneurial basics; finishes with a call-to-action to book a "generate income strategy" call via her bio link.

Oh, I can taste. I can tast. I can taste. Hello and good evening, everyone. I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and money mindset coach for ADHD business owners, coming to you live on the Facebooks, on LinkedIn, YouTube, and on Instagram. Hello, everyone. Welcome. I love these to be interactive. Hello, spirit panda. How are you? So if you have any questions, then please do pop them in the chat. And I will try my best to remember to check Instagram. There are two different screens here. I'm gonna. I'm gonna pop this over here so that way I can see everything. But. Yeah, Welcome. I want to talk tonight a little bit about confidence. And this is inspired by pretty much every conversation I have either on my brave Biz lab call that I do on the fourth Friday of every single month, and most of the conversations that I have with potential clients like Kelsey and current clients also. And it's this that it's almost like there's a bunch of, like, confidence and self esteem and manifestation gurus out there that are selling people this idea that to be able to be successful, they just have to work on their confidence first. As if that's something that you can just go like, there we go, or you can journal on and build confidence. Maybe you can go to the confidence store. I assume that's where they sell Spanx, right? Because I can't think of anything that you can buy that would just like an item that would give you confidence more than Spanx. Right. Really sucks it in. Anyway. Hi, Kelsey. Anyway, confidence gets labeled like the thing that's holding you back in your business. And I get it. I get it because it feels like the thing that is holding you back from taking action. Right. Whenever you think about posting on social media or reaching out to someone who could be a potential client or. Or even talking about your business, you know, that sensation of feeling not confident, you know, like, if we think about it, like, what does it feel like in your body? You know, when you're not confident, you want to make yourself smaller. You get really nervous. You might start fidgeting, you might start sweating a little bit if you're like, you know, a certain McManus woman. Hi, Stephen. You made it. Welcome. Yeah, confidence is one of those tricky little fuckers, right? Because we know the sensation of feeling like we're a fraud. We know the sensation of, like, not really knowing what to say, and especially when we haven't done something that can feel like the enemy, that can feel like the obstacle. Right. Whenever I'm talking to someone and they're saying, I just need to build up my confidence to build my business. Once I have that, I'll be fine. Like, everything will work out. Then my questions are always these. Do you know how to sell your services? Yes. No. Maybe. Oftentimes that's a no. They don't know how to sell their services. Okay. Do you know how to market your services? Yes. No. Maybe. Most of the time it's a no. They don't know how to market their services. Do you know how to make an offer that people actually want to buy for enough money that will support you? No. Most people don't know how to do that. Okay, great. Do you know how to do social media? Do you know how to set up booking links? Do you know how to do this? Do you know how to do that? No, no, no, and no. Cool. So confidence. I know it feels like it's this big, like, hairy obstacle that's getting in the way of you running your business, but confidence is actually a symptom of you just not knowing how to start a business, right? Like, if you didn't know how to ride a bike and I told you to ride it two miles to the store and back to get some milk, you'd look at me like I was nuts, right? You'd say, I don't know how to ride a bike. Don't expect me to do that. You know, if I told you to juggle some knives and you weren't a knife juggler, you weren't confident in it, and you hadn't. Didn't know what to do, you're not going to. Well, I hope. I hope you're not going to juggle the knives. Do not juggle knives. If you. You don't know how to juggle knives, people. Okay, that is. That is your. Your safety warning for today. But seriously, I know it's really tempting to think that there's some kind of, like, internal thing wrong with you, that once you get fixed, you'll be golden to start this business, right? Because that means that, like, you can do a little bit of work and it can be quiet and it can be pretty private and personal, and you don't have to put yourself out there before you're ready. But that's not how it happens. You know? How do you learn how to ride a bike? You get on a bike and you fall down and you get back on the bike and you go a little further and you fall down again. And you keep doing that until you know how to ride the bike, until you feel confident at it. It's the exact same thing in your business. Okay. I have a big problem with how they've set up Western schools. There's no entrepreneur studies in high schools. I think that's a major problem. I think. I think teenagers, every single teenager should be taught how to sell, should be taught the basics of marketing, should be taught how to use social media in a way to promote themselves and build their personal brand. Not. Not. And notice, like, this would actually help young people be far more healthy in their social media practices. Right. Because they go into it, like, fully knowing how that is going to, like, intentionally or unintentionally build their personal brand. Understanding how to have money conversations, with people, understanding why people buy things, and how you can create something of value that other people want to buy. You were never taught this. Our school system is not designed to teach you this. So why are you expecting yourself to magically feel confident in doing any of it? Okay, it would be. It would be like if our schools didn't teach math, and then. And then you were asked to do some math, you're like, it's not. And it would be just as silly as if you were like, oh, my God, I don't have confidence. I can't do math. You would never say that. You'd say, no one ever taught me math. I don't know how to do it. Right. There's this ridiculous thing that happens to everyone. You're not. You're not crazy. This happened to me too. And this happens to most of my clients. But there's this insane thing that happens when we start businesses, is that we expect ourselves to, like, magically, inherently know how to start the business. Right. Just because we know how to provide a service that we're offering in our business. Okay, that's not the case. That's not the case. There's a reason why there are business schools. There's a reason why people go for MBAs. There's a reason why there are business strategists and business coaches out here. Let me see. Spirit panda. Gotta hop off, meet with a client. But great talk so far. Thank you. It's so impactful when we realize how many of the things holding us back are in our own heads. 100%. Oh, and. Hi, Kate. Welcome. Yeah. Yeah. It is absolutely insane. Absolutely insane. The. Sorry, I just got distracted because Instagram, the video is a little delayed, and I'm trying to keep it hidden, and I got turned around in my own head. But it's absolutely insane. The expectations that we have for ourselves when it comes to starting a business and doing something we've never done before, right? If you've never, ever baked anything, are you going to expect yourself to be a good baker right off the bat? No. If you've never built something, are you going to expect yourself to feel 100% confident in that right off the bat? Absolutely not. That is not how it works. So if you're starting a business and you're beating yourself up because you don't feel confident enough yet, and you are really, really struggling to get yourself to do stuff, I want you to really ask yourself the question. Questions. Do you know how to do this? Do you know how to sell? Do you know how to market? Do you know how to use social media to get clients? Do you know how to do all the things? Do you even know what all the things are? And if the answer is no on, on several of those, then, babes, you gotta get some help, okay? And it's not a failure on your part that you need help. It's just a. It's a knowledge gap that you need help, okay? If you're building a house and you don't know how to be an architect, you hire an architect. Simple as that. This is, you know, when you work with a coach or a business strategist, and I'm not like, you can hire me, you can hire someone else, but you need to find someone who can be that person to fill the knowledge gap for you, right? Because you can either stay here not knowing what you don't know and feeling all kinds of ways and feeling like you're being a failure and feeling like, oh my God, it's just that I'm not confident enough that this isn't happening. Totally within your control, you can choose to stay there. I don't want that for you, but if that's what gets you off, then go for it. Or you can choose to invest in help and get the help and actually start your business. That is. That is the choice. Okay? With that, I'm going to go celebrate a certain verdict that was just delivered today. Hi, Dusty. Welcome. And I will be saving this. So if you want to go back and hear me rant you a little bit more and you can do so. And if you have any questions, if you feel like really stuck in your confidence, self esteem, if you just don't know what you don't know in your business, then here's what. I just almost knocked over my water. Then here's what I want you to do. I want you to go to my bio wherever you're watching this from, and I want you to click on the link under my name and I want you to book a generate income strategy call, okay? If you can't find it, then I want you to shoot me a dm. Okay? And we will book a time to talk and we will get real about what your knowledge gap is and what will get you feeling confident in running your business. Okay? When I talk to people, there's no shame. There's no judging you for not knowing what you don't know. It took me a really long time to learn this stuff, okay? And it's one of the joys of my life to be able to hand it back to people and be like, here you go. Here's some knowledge that will help you make a lot of money. So I cannot wait to talk to you. And drop, drop if anyone ever makes you feel like you're the problem and there's something inherently wrong with you that you have to be fixed, unfollow and block, okay? They're jackasses. Anyway, I love you all so much. I hope you're having a great week and I look forward to going live with you tomorrow. By the way, I have lost track of what day this is, but I'm doing a 30 day live challenge. My consequence if I don't go live one day is that I have to sing and record myself singing and share it to the Internet. And so you should be very grateful that I haven't dropped off yet. Anyway, I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and money mindset coach. Thank you to Steven and spirit, Panda and Kelsey and Kate and Dusty for all being here. I hope you got so much value out of this and I will see you all tomorrow. Bye.
