Day 4- Social to Sales 5 Day Challenge

Katie McManus (business strategist and leadership coach) leads Day 4 of the "Social to Sales" five-day challenge on improving social media engagement. She argues that engagement is a habit formed by reward: creators must show rewards by engaging others first (liking/commenting) so the algorithm and people reciprocate. Practical prescription: set a (roughly) 10-minute daily routine to comment authentically on others' posts before (and/or after) posting, craft posts that are easy to comment on, and stay present to respond to comments to convert social interactions into opportunities.

Good morning and afternoon and good night, depending on where in the world you are. I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and leadership coach. Today here with you for day four of the social to sales five day challenge. So far in this challenge, we have gone through what social media platform you need to spend your time on. We've also talked about how you can strategic strategically plan so that you actually stick with this. Yesterday, what did we talk about yesterday? Yesterday we talked. Oh, we talked about calls to action, how you actually get people from social media who are connected with you, following your content, interacting with you to take action, to either interact with your posts or take that leap and do a sales call with you or become a client. Okay? Today we're going to talk about a critical step in being successful on social media, and that is, my friends, how to get better engagement on social media. Okay? Now this can feel like the, the missing mysterious, magical piece that you just can't seem to figure out. You can spend hours upon hours writing immaculate, amazing, perfectly grammatically correct content. You can find, like the best visuals, you can find the most amazing pictures. You can take the, like, the most bomb selfie of yourself and still get shit engagement, okay? Because ultimately, ultimately social media runs as a brain does, okay? It runs just like a brain does. And how does a brain operate? How does a brain do actions that are habits? Right? So I'm going to talk a little bit about what's the, what's the metaphor I want to use here? Okay, so when toothpaste. So World War I came out, came out as if it was like something that was released. So World War I happened and a bunch of people were enlisted into the war and a bunch of people were rejected because actually their, their dental health was so, so bad. Was so bad. There's this huge push for people to brush their teeth more often to have better dental hygiene. So I did a thing. Hi. Hi, Chris. Welcome. Okay, so but one of the campaigns that they did, they realized that there was no reward for brushing your teeth, okay? Because the human brain creates habits by doing an action and then being rewarded for that action, okay? So any healthy habit you want to have, it has to have a good feeling afterwards or a good connotation. Okay? So one of the ads that was put out, they put, they put mint in toothpaste. I think that was it. And so they, they had this ad and basically it said, you, like, you know, if you run your tongue across your teeth, you'll feel all the plaque. You'll feel like the grittiness on your teeth. And, you know, it'll help that. What'll help that is to brush your teeth with this toothpaste. Okay. And so everyone naturally, you know, ran their tongue across their teeth, and they're like, oh, my God, that's right. So gritty. Gross. Okay, I need to go brush my teeth. And then that feeling after you brush your teeth. And we all know it, right? Because we all brush our teeth. Hopefully you run your tongue across your teeth, and it's so small, smooth, and it's minty fresh. And, like, your mouth just feels, like, alive. And just like the Instagram thing when you give your kids, like, the extra minty toothpaste, like, why is it spicy? Yeah, I love that. Anyway, there was a reward that was created here. So the thing. The thing that we have to design as we are going out and creating content for people is we have to. We have to create these reward centers for them. Okay? We have to create this habit that, like, when they see our stuff, they want to engage on it. And how we do that, how we do that is by engaging on their stuff first. We show them that there is a reward already there. We're here supporting them. We are being. We are showing up in their comments. We're liking their stuff. We are boosting the algorithm for them. And because we do that, when they see us post, they naturally want to feed it back. Okay, there's. Because we've already shown them. Here's the reward center. Here is that feeling as you run your tongue across your teeth. Okay? The algorithm loves. Loves to show your stuff to more people. When it sees that you are already out there supporting people. Okay. When you're already there and on the platform and engaging and being there, I want you to imagine, like, way back in the day, like 300 years ago, say you designed, like, an inn, an in. And it's in the middle of the woods in Germany, and no one else is around. Okay. But, like, you live in a really beautiful space and you're like, you know, people want to come here, you know, and spend time, and surely chatting with me is rewarded in itself. Absolutely, Laura. Absolutely. They're gonna want to hang out with you and. Hi, Asher. Welcome. Hi. I love the neon sign behind you. So here's. Here's. Okay, so you have this anis and this be beautiful forested area in Germany. You're like, you know what? Build it and they will come. And so you build this in and have, like, all the luxurious things that you could possibly have 300 years ago, minus indoor Plumbing. And you wait and you wait and you wait, and then you look around, and you're like, wait a minute. There's no road here. There's no road. Some of this place, like, no one's going to naturally know that it's here because there's no road here. So I need to go, and I need to create a road. So you. You start every day just walking back and forth from your. Your inn, your home, to a local village. And every day you walk to the village, like, that path actually becomes more worn. Okay. You're. You're treading a path through these woods. And at first, it's kind of dingy. It's kind of dingy. Like, maybe deer are also using that path. And it looks really overgrown. And, like, if you're not looking for it, you'd completely miss it. But each day, maybe you're, like, whacking some branches as you go along. Maybe you're chopping some stuff down. Maybe you're, like, seeing holes and you're filling them in, or maybe you're pulling out plants every single time you walk this. This trail to the local village. Now, the more you walk this trail to this village, the more likely people in the village are going to say, oh, cool, there's a trail here. Let's go check it out. And then, you know, they check it out. They walk down that trail, and they come to your inner. And they look around. They're like, this is gorgeous. And they turn to their husband, like, we should spend a weekend here. Wouldn't this be nice to get away from the kids? Maybe your mother can come and watch them for the weekend. We can take some time off. Thank you, Asher. And so you're building this track. Now you're also on your day. Once this track is built and you have this really consistent flow of people from one village, you get to go to another village. You get to, like, start doing another path over here and another path over here until you have, like, 17 different paths from all these different villages all around your area, and people are able to access you. And maybe in each village, there's only, like, two or three people who know about you. But each time they. They head from their village to this path, people are gonna be like, hey, where are you going? Where are you going? Oh, you're going down that path. Where does that path leave? Let me follow you. Let me check it out, too. Hey. This is how the algorithm works. We need to train the algorithm to work in our favor by visiting the villages first. What does that mean? It means that you have to go and comment on other people's stuff first, their content first, before they're able to understand, wow, there's content here that I really need to engage with. Okay, so what does this look like? Okay, so I don't need you thinking like, oh, she's going to tell me that I've spent all day on social media. Like, I'm busy. I don't have time for that. I don't want this to become like an addiction thing, because I've heard of that. Deep breath. Okay. You're not going to spend all day on. On social media. What you're going to do is every day, every day that you post and. And also on the days that you don't post, okay? Because this is. This is. You get out of it what you put into it in 10 minutes a day. LinkedIn 101. Love it. Yes. Well, Chris, is what's so cool about this is that this is LinkedIn, but this is also Instagram and this is also TikTok, and this is also Twitter and this is also all of the social media platforms. Because all the social media platforms want to encourage us to be social. They want us to intermingle and comment on each other's stuff. So literally, it doesn't matter what social media platform you're on. You set a timer for 10 minutes a day and you open up that social media platform and you go through and you comment on as many posts as you possibly can in 10 minutes a day, okay? These do not have to be your ideal clients, okay? And listen to me on this. They do not have to be your ideal clients. Why is that? Well, because you commenting on their stuff is going to show your stuff to. To more of their followers, okay? Because you have organic reach and in their followers are going to be your ideal clients, okay? Because, you know, I may be talking to you right now if you're not in this challenge and you have no idea, you know, what this is about. You've never even thought about starting a business in your life. I guarantee you that you have a cousin, a neighbor, a co worker, a family friend, someone we went to high school with, who's connected to you on social media, who is thinking about starting a business, okay? You don't have to be my ideal client to be a valued member of my audience. For me to lift you up and have you lift me up in social media, okay? It amplifies both of our voices, okay? So you are going to spend 10 minutes going and commenting. Now, the other thing Here is you're not going and commenting and trying to sound smart, okay? You're not going and commenting and being like, well, in my expertise as an HR professional, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Here's the policy that we have. No, no. You see, someone got a promotion. You're like, oh, my God, congratulations. Looks like it's so well deserved. Next time I see you, I'm buying you a glass of wine. Or if I ever meet you, we're going to celebrate this. We're going to add it to the list of celebrations that we're going to have, including our birthdays, holidays, promotions, new sales, all the things you're going to show up as a human. If someone shares a picture of their dog and with a funny story, you're going to share a funny story for your dog back. Or maybe you're a hamster. You know, if someone is. Is upset about something and they're posting about it, you're going to go and you're going to add some words of comfort, okay? And kindness and maybe share about a time that you were really low too, and maybe what helped you as well, okay? You're going to be a fucking human, okay? Tanya, this is so fun for hermits. I had to act out the lady. Yes, I hope it's fun for hermits because guess what? You get to do this without ever setting foot outside your house, okay? You get to go and put yourself out there and give people an experience of you without ever putting on makeup. It's amazing. Okay? You can do this without a bra on even. It's great. No one knows unless you tell them like I just did anyway. But the beautiful thing here is that you're going to plan these 10 minutes. You are going to go and we're having a little. Oh, Chris and Tanya, hello. You are going to go and you're going to do 10 minutes of engagement before you post, okay? It's kind of like you don't just show up at a party and start yelling at the room, all of your opinions and start telling everyone all the news of everything. No, you walk in, you maybe put your coat down. If it's a shoeless house, you take your shoes off, you say hi to the host, you say hi to a couple other people, you maybe grab a drink. You know, you get some snacks from the snack table, you, like, get settled somewhere and then you start having a conversation with people. Okay? This is social media. When you think of social media, I want you to think about, how are you social? How do you enter a Party. How do you enter a networking event? You don't just get there, stand up on a chair and start telling everyone about your life. Okay. At some point in the party, people may be like, oh, hey Chris, can you tell us about this new project that you're working on? We'd all love to hear it. And then you kind of have, you have everyone's attention. But no, you have to ease yourself into this social environment first. Okay? That is what I want you to do on social media when you're going to post. You can also do it after you post. Okay? So you can kind of bookend them 10 minutes here, 10 minutes there. Ultimately, if you want to be successful in social media and you want to get paying clients for it, this has to be a non negotiable, okay. This has to be something that you build at least 30 minutes a day into, into your day for. Okay? Because you're going to do 10 minutes of engagement, you're going to post and maybe do a little bit more engagement afterwards. And then later in the day you're going to check in and you're going to respond to all of the comments on your post. You're going to engage with people. Okay? You don't just imagine you're back at that cocktail party and people have just been like, hey, Chris, I'm picking on you, Chris, tell us about that new project that you're working on. And so you start talking about like, yeah, you know, I'm actually helping new business or business owners who want to go live give me a little promo here. Chris, I'm helping business owners who want to go live with all of the management of it. You know, I'm doing the production, I'm helping them schedule stuff, I'm handling all the tech for them. So all they have to worry about is just show up. Now, Chris, like after saying that, you're not just gonna be like, okay, now, peace out bitches. Like, I'm out. You're gonna stay and answer questions. Like, people are gonna be like, oh, that's so cool. You know, the focus is gonna go to someone else and someone else. But later, you know, as you're, as you're getting a new beer or soda or something, someone's going to come up to you and say, hey, you know what you were saying earlier that's so interesting. You know, I think my friend Barbara might need that. You know, do you think, how can I get you in touch with her? If you left the party, you would never have that moment. Okay? You would never have that moment where you say, oh, my God. Yeah, I'd love to help your friend Barbara. Absolutely. Oh, how did she get in touch with me? Well, here, why don't we do this? Why don't you just text us both and then I can follow up with her. You have to be there. You have to be engaged. You have to be social if you're going to be on social media and get clients out of it. Okay, so that is your work today. Your work today is to literally just go through your social media and find 10 people to comment on and comment on their posts without trying to sound smart, without trying to be an expert, and without trying to be perfect. Okay? Remember, you always have the power of that delete button. Okay? The delete button is yours. If you comment something, you're like, oh, that sounded really dumb, or I misunderstood. You can always go and delete it. Okay? It's. It is yours. The power is yours, baby. The other thing I want you to remember. Where'd it go? Oh, my God. I forgot something. I just. I just built it up like it was a big important thing and now it's gone. Oh, no. Well, let me just go to the con comments and I will hopefully remember. Oh, Chris goes, you know, on social media all the time without a bra. That's amazing. And Tanya is very happy that he doesn't wear a bra. I mean, it's a personal choice. Chris, I think you can wear a bra or not. And then Chris and Tanya are going to be working together this month. That's amazing. So exciting. What was the other thought I had? I can't remember. I'm sure it's super important. Oh, just be yourself. That's it. You just get to be yourself. That's it. You get to be a human humaning with other humans. And that is naturally an imperfect process. Okay, We. It's the hardest thing we're ever going to do. It's the thing that we're going to make the biggest mistakes in, but you're just going to go inhuman with other humans. That's it. And so. And just watch as you do this. Your engagement on your posts will go up. Now you're also going to know. Oh, here's. Here's what I was gonna say. So if you go through your feed and you're like, all these people are super boring. I don't like these people. These. Like, this is not interesting at all, then you're gonna find better people. You're gonna find the one person who's posted something interesting and you're gonna go onto their, their feed and you're gonna go into their activity and you're gonna see who they're following and who they are commenting on and you are going to go and engage. So, Bobby McVeigh Blast CP TM. I don't know what that acronym stands for. I get a lot of views, but no activity. What are your thoughts? So, Bobby, you know what we're gonna do? I'm gonna pull up your, Your LinkedIn. See, why do you get so many views and no comments? Okay, because this is a really common thing to get views. Yeah, I see you're getting one, maybe three likes. And I hope you don't mind me just going deep on this on a live. Tell me, tell me now and I will either stop or keep going. Okay, so I'm gonna see so your posts. Okay, so here's a tip. Okay, so right off the bat, Bobby, you're actually not giving people a lot of stuff to work with. So in your posts, you're giving them one sentence like, here's a tip if you want to grow professionally at Community Bank. Cool, that's helpful. If people actually want to go through and watch the video, a lot of people don't. Okay, so they will stop and see your post and they're going to pause because there's an image and it's kind of moving and they're going to read it because they're gonna like, what's this? Like one nugget of, of truth. But like, how do you comment on that? How do you comment on that, especially if you don't have the time to actually go and watch the video? And also, you just given me advice. So, like, do I give advice back? Do I? Because I don't want to sound stupid. I, I want to make sure that I'm. So here's, here's the other thing. So as we're talking. I love that you brought this up, Bobbi. Thank you. I hope you don't mind me kind of going deep on this. So when we're writing content for social media, we have to remember one thing, is that when people go on social media to comment, to engage, to like lift other people up, what they're doing, they're doing it so that they can win brownies. Brownie points. Not brownies. Brownies would be amazing if you just got like brownie every single time. Oh my God, I'd wave. I'd weigh so much more than I do now. No. So they want brownie points. Okay, so if you're posting something that is really easy for me to comment on and look smart or funny or look like I'm adding some value to this conversations, any shape, way shape or form, then you're going to win the game. However, if you're setting me up to question what I should be commenting, if it even takes me half a second to think about, oh my God, well, what could I say on that? It's too late. I've already decided it's too much work and I'm not going to put the effort in. Okay, so, so Bobbi, people may be seeing like a ton of value from you. They may be watching the video and saying, wow, this is super helpful, definitely going to try that. But they're not going to want to admit that they didn't know it already. They're not going to want to get into a pissing match with you about giving advice back and forth, okay? They're not going to want other people to see that it was helpful to them because they are hoping that everyone already sees them as professional and competent and an overachiever. So one of the things that we make a big mistake in, especially in like the coaching world and the consulting world, is that we want to just give people advice because we're told that we have to give value. Just give value, spew value all over the world. Just give people advice, solve their problems. Great, so what does that do? It doesn't create connection. If you're just telling me how to do my life better, how do I comment on that? So you have to really shift your content strategy here to be a little more personal and engageable. As it is right now, I think you're just having an engageability problem with the types of posts that you're doing. But you know, you're getting views, people are seeing your stuff and oh my God. And you have, you have a gif from Don't Tell mom the Babysitter's Dead. One of the best movies of the 20th century. I fucking love that movie. Also, Bobby, if you, if you have more problems with this, shoot me a dm. We can figure out a time to talk. Or you can upgrade to the Q and A section session later today at 3:00pm Eastern Time. That's still, still open. Anyway, train of thought. So, okay, so bottom line, go and comment. Be yourself and comment more. Okay? Because a rising tide lifts all boats and if you're the tide baby, you're not only going to lift your own boat, but you're gonna lift everyone else's around you and they're gonna want to help you too. So I did a thing, Chris. People do business with people. Be people via people. Yes. That needs to be like a Twitter post. That needs to be a T shirt. That needs to be all the things on the coffee mug. Please, Chris. And thank you. Anyway, wow, we're going long, so I'm gonna cut that short here. If you have any questions on that and you're in the challenge, you know how to find me. Otherwise, go out and comment people and. And just be yourself. You got this. It's. It's easier than you think. And like I said, you don't have to wear a bra to do it. Anyway, I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and leadership coach. Thank you for joining me. This is day four of Social to Sales, the five day challenge to get you paying clients from social media. If you're in the challenge, I hope you're having an amazing time, and if you're not, I hope you're having fun following along. Anyway, have a great Wednesday or Tuesday. Tuesday. And I will see you all later. Bye.
