DIY is a sign of fear

Live YouTube video in which Katie McManus (business strategist and money-mindset coach) argues that a DIY approach to building a business is driven by fear and self-sabotage. She warns that doing everything yourself slows progress, wastes time and energy, and provides excuses to quit; instead she urges investing in guidance or experts, describes her own career pivot and lessons learned, and promotes an affordable beginner program (“Build Your Own Business”/Be Beginner) with limited-time enrollment. The recording includes audience interaction (comments and Q&A) and motivational framing (no plan B; treat the business as Plan A).

Foreign. Hello and good morning. I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and money mindset coach. Just adjusting things. Hello. Hello. Happy Saturday. Unless you're on the other side of the world and it's Sunday already. Time travelers. Anyway, hello. Just a little housekeeping. I am going live to the Facebooks, to LinkedIn, to YouTube, to Twitter and to Instagram over here on my phone that is on this fun little contraption that attaches to my desk, which I bump my desk a lot. So if it wobbles, that's me recreating that. Anyway, hello and happy weekend here in the US we have holiday weekend this weekend because we have 4th of July next week celebrating independence and freedom when our freedoms are being stripped of our of us every single day. It seems like that's a topic for another day. Today I want to have a little come to Jesus talk with you. Looking different, Rohit. I don't, I don't know if that's a compliment or not, but thanks. I'll take it as a compliment. I think maybe he doesn't like my shirt anyway. Having a little come to Jesus talk with you about doing it yourself, Javi. Woohoo. Welcome. Doing it yourself. Diy. Okay. I hear every damn day people talking about how they are going to do it themselves. They're going to try to figure it out, Rohit. Oh, it's a compliment. Thank you very much. They're going to do it themselves and it usually has to do with their business because that's what I talk about all the time. And can I just. I'm going to call you out. DIY is an act of cowardice. DIY is one of the most prevalent ways that people self sabotage their potential success in their business. Okay, so DIY is great if you're refurbishing tables. You know, if that's your hobby, DIY is great if you love knitting. I used to be a big knitter. I loved making my own sweaters. You know, it's way more expensive and takes way more time than buying a sweater. Hello, Garcia. Welcome. And. But when it comes to your business, committing to DIY everything yourself is the biggest scam. It is the way that you are sabotaging yourself. You are guaranteeing your own failure. Okay, let's talk about the different ways that people try to diy. So they try to DIY figuring out how to market themselves. They try to DIY their websites, they try to DIY their social media accounts. They try to DIY figuring out their pricing, how to do sales. They try To DIY a whole bunch of shit. And let me tell you, the thing about DIY is that when you do it yourself takes a lot longer obviously because you've never done this before. Also, it's not guaranteed to go well. I don't know if anyone has actually tried to refurbish like a side table or something. I've done several and sometimes they turn out okay, but most of the time they turn out badly because I haven't done it before. I'm not a pro, okay? There are things that I just don't know that I don't know. There was one point where I just didn't realize that there was like a, like a wood covering on the side of the table. I thought that was the original wood. And so I tried doing all that stuff and you know, like the, the sanding and the painting and whatever and it ended up just peeling off, like the whole veneer peeled off. Let me see. Rohit, DIY is good for inflation. I don't know what that means. I need further, further definitions here, please. DIY you is the biggest scam because you feel like you're saving money. You feel like you're saving money because you know you're not spending money on the expertise because you're not spending money on like the right tools, right? But here's where that's the scam is what you save in money, you end up spending way more in time and energy. All right? Because here's what I know about you is that if you are wanting to start a business, especially a service based business, I bet you can charge anywhere from 200 to $1,000 an hour depending on what you do. Okay? Now I want you to think about the money you're saving in investing in help and investing in the right tools and think about how much time you are going to spend and waste on trying to figure it out yourself. And all that time and. Hi Max, welcome. All that time you could be making money, you could actually be out there working with clients, getting paid for every hour and instead you are spending it, wasting it trying to figure out how to do something that you don't know how to do that is probably not going to be done well at the end of the day because you didn't know how to do it in the first place. And then is not going to work out. Okay, We have a couple comments. Hello. Hello. It's Augustine from Kenya. Nice to meet you. Hello. Okay, let me see. I just want to read this comment. Augustine, I so support you and also like that this is a topic for another day and I support you and I wish you all, all the best. And if you want any, any guidance on, on content that you can create, then please let me know to call attention to that. So, Adam Taylor, how does that work over time? Adam, how does what work over time? Tell. If you give me a little more to go on, then I'm happy to answer the question now. So DIY is actually a way that your fear gremlin, your, your saboteur in your head that actually is terrified of you succeeding. It's actually one of the ways that it sabotages you, right? Because doing it yourself is a guarantee that things are going to go slower, right? Like, there's no way you're going to fast track this if you're doing it yourself because you don't know how to do it. You don't even know what to ask when you're trying to figure out how to do it. Right. You're going from an absolute beginner standpoint. Okay? That takes time. Okay. I know if I tried to build a house right now, I mean, my dad was a carpenter. I know how to nail stuff. That's not as funny. I know how to nail stuff. I know how to use a drill. I know how to saw things. I know how to use some, you know, like power tools. But I don't understand engineering. I don't understand architecture. I don't know how to do the math of like what needs to be done for a load bearing wall or a load bearing. Be Team Rohit. So very true. Thank you. You know, it's gonna. And I also don't know even where to go to start figuring this stuff out because I don't know what I don't know. It's the same when you're starting a business. You don't know what you don't know. And. Hi, Catherine. Welcome. And that, that saboteur that you have in your mind who's terrified of you succeeding, you know, convincing you to do it yourself and save the money because it's afraid of like investing in this thing that's not sure is going to work out and might actually fail. It's an amazing way to slow you down. Right. The other thing about this is that I don't know how becomes a valid excuse for you to fail. Right? Like, you know, I use, I use riding a bike as an example a lot. Because riding a bike, if you don't know how to ride a bike is terrifying, right? You're like on this thing with two wheels, you have no idea how it's balancing. You don't know how to stop, you don't know how to turn. Like, the idea of going for a bike ride when you don't know how is frightening. Right? And also, like, if you got on the bike and you went, you know, a few feet and you fell over, I don't know how. Like, that's a great way to get out of going for a bike ride if you're afraid of doing it. Right. Oh, and thank you for the follow, Catherine. Yes, hello. Let me see. So, Adam, great. So if I struggle with marketing the first year, and I think time and money into it, that's a loss. I could outsource that part. But if I learn it that first year, it's an investment. I don't have to outsource the skill again. Makes sense. Is the ROI worth it? Yeah, Adam, absolutely, it's worth it. But doing it yourself a hundred percent is. You're probably not going to figure it out that first year. Like, you're probably not going to figure it out that fifth year if you're trying to really do it yourself. Like, you're just going to be playing the guessing game ad nauseam forever and not knowing what the best practices are. I'm not saying that you have to invest in someone else to do it for you when you don't have any, like, proof that's going to work. But at least invest in guidance. At least invest in someone who can show you. Here's what you need to be thinking about. Here's how you do X, Y and Z. Here's the question, question you need to be asking. Without that guidance, you, sir, like, you have no guarantee this is going to work. You actually have more of a guarantee that it's not going to work. And here's the thing about, about like investing in help is that like, once you invest in help, you understand the principles, you understand you know what matters, what questions you need to ask. You can do that forever, right? And then at some point, you know, when you get big enough, you can absolutely invest in someone to do it for you and you can make the right choice in who you should invest in. Right? Because you know what you're looking for, you know, like the kind of expertise that you're, you're seeking out. Does that make sense? Yes, makes sense. Okay, perfect. Rohit, is negotiation good? Rohit, Negotiation is always great, but I don't know in this context if you can give me a little more to work with. So anyway, let me see. Okay, so it's guaranteed to slow you down, right? If you want to guarantee that, like, this business isn't going to work out and you have an excuse and, hi, John, welcome. Do you have an excuse to, like, say, oh, well, it just didn't work out. Like, it took too long to get off the ground and I couldn't stick with it. That's a great excuse. Excuse to do it yourself and fail, Right? You know, saying I don't know how becomes a valid excuse. The other excuse that, like, we cling to, right? Which, I mean, Adam, to go with what you were talking about, like, you try to figure out your marketing and you're doing it for three years and you're still not getting clients out of. I almost just knocked over my coffee and you're still not getting clients out of it. You know, what a great excuse to say, well, it just didn't work. It just didn't work. You know, wasn't my fault. It just didn't work. Right? What didn't work is that you tried to diy. You tried to do it yourself. You didn't know what you were doing. You were too fearful, too much of a coward to invest in the right help, which would have been more of a guarantee of your success. Now, the other thing that can come up that your saboteur absolutely loves, it will cling to this, that voice of doubt that wants to keep you safe and keep you in your little comfort zone. And, you know, keep you with what? Anything that you are more familiar with. Even if it's your shitty job, Even if it's a job that doesn't pay you enough to pay the bills, even if it's a house that has a leaky roof, even if it's a relationship that doesn't serve you. That person's kind of mean to you sometimes. Your voice of doubt, your saboteur loves it when you're overwhelmed. Loves it because when you're overwhelmed, you don't have a way to sort what you should be focusing on next. You get frozen. And this is especially true for my comrades in arms who have adhd, right? When we're in overwhelm, our executive dysfunction just takes over and we don't take action, right? And what a better way to get overwhelmed than to give yourself this massive, massive DIY project that is supposed to, like, be public because you're starting a business and is also supposed to make you money. Like, those are two, like, one big thing to consider and a big result that you have no idea to get to. What a better way to create overwhelm that will stop you in your tracks from ever even getting started than to give you a massive project that you will get so overwhelmed with that you won't even take action to begin with. Like guaranteed failure. Absolutely. Okay, so here's what I need you to let go of here. This. This is the. This is the sentence that when I hear someone say this, I know that their. Their business is never going to work out. This is. This is the. If I were a doctor for businesses, this would be like the sign that there's a fatal disease in your business and it's never going to get off the ground. And it's this. I'll try it out and see if it works. And if it does, then I'll invest in help to grow it from there. It never works. It never works. Because here's the thing about that sentence. You're not making this business your plan A. It is at best a plan P. Right? It is so far down the Alphabet, you are not betting on it to succeed. Like, it succeeding is just a possibility out there in the universe. Right? That's it, Randy. Let me see. Dang it. Those carrot cards didn't. Didn't let me know you were on. Oh, we need to get you a better deck of carrot cards, Randy. The golden chain of security. Yes, exactly. So let me see. Just want to make sure I'm catching up on all the comments. All right. Where was I going with that? Oh, yeah. So, like, this. The possibility of your business succeeding is just like. It's a what if? Like, if it happens. Like, if I win the lottery, you know, which. I mean, what's the chance of us all winning the lottery? It's very, very low. I still buy a lottery ticket every week just in case, you know, it's good to have your hat in the ring. But I'm not betting on it. Right. The only people who actually succeed in their business are the ones who invest in themselves, who look for help wherever they can get it, who bet on themselves in a way that, like, they have some skin in the game. Right. Ed Sheeran never had a backup plan. He's a singer in this and a songwriter, if you didn't know. I just. I don't like Tsitsumi. I know nothing about music, so. But he didn't have a backup plan. Like, becoming a famous musician was his only option. That was it. That was it. Like, if you want to have a successful business, this needs to be your only option. Right? If you want to have a successful business, like, there's a way in which you actually need to burn your bridges. Right? You know, I hate using this guy because, you know, he committed some acts of genocide and not a good person. But Cortez, like, when he arrived in the new world, he had his sailors burn their boats or their ships. Guess they call them ships, not boats because like, at that point, like, there's no going home unless you survive. Unless you actually win this, this hostile takeover of this land. Right, Adam, thank you. I was like, ed who? Yeah, Ed Sheeran. He's a musician, he sings songs and he was actually had a cameo in the last Game of Thrones series or season. And actually fun fact. So the Maisie Williams who played Aria, she was obsessed with Ed Sheeran and the whole, like the whole production did this as a surprise for her and she had no idea it was going to happen until she showed up on set. And there's Ed Sheeran. Fun facts. Anyway, let me see. Randy. I used to buy lottery tickets and then I found out you could watch it for free on tv. Oh, Randy, you're, you're strong with the dad jokes today. Anyway, um, and here's where people get freaked out when I say this. Like, you can't. You like don't have a plan B, right? Your, your business has to be your plan A. I'm not saying that you have to quit your job. I'm not saying that you have to say, okay, cool, like, no more income from this guaranteed place of money. I have to go all in on this business that I'm not even sure is going to work out. Absolutely not. Fuck that. Okay? I say that as someone who jumped way too soon into or way too early into working full time for myself. It almost didn't work out. Ok? Okay. Like, I don't want that for you. I want you to be able to buy food and pay your rent or your mortgage and pay for gas and you know, be able to survive. Right? That's, that's what I'm here for. I want you to survive. But what I'm saying is do not have a plan B. If, if this business doesn't work out. Now, having a full time job can absolutely be a part of your plan A, right? Your plan A can be great. I'm going to work full time 40 hours a week and I'm going to work, you know, 10 to 15 hours a week also in my business. And by the time my business gets to this point, that's when I'm going to quit my job. That can absolutely be a plan A. But what I don't want is for you to say, oh, well, you know, I'll try the whole business thing, you know, and if it works out at some point, then I'll do this. But really, like, I'll just, like, ipso facto plan on just staying in my job, right? Because that's the safe. That's the safe bet. That's not you speaking. That's not your higher self. That's not your brave self. That is your inner weenie who's saying, you know what? I don't think this is going to work for you. And actually, I'm more afraid that it will work for you. So let's create some bullshit reasons for it not to work out. Let's have you waste some time and some energy diying stuff. And when that becomes too hard and it becomes too overwhelming, and when it just doesn't work out, then, like, you know, you already had another plan. You already had another plan. Don't worry about it. And that other plan is actually like a guaranteed, like, guaranteed safety area, right? Because it's familiar. Even if you're treated like shit there, even if it's work that you hate doing, even if it's sucking your soul out of your face every single damn day. That's what your inner weenie wants. And what do I say here? Stop being a weenie. Like, we're not here to listen to our weenie selves, to design our lives from that place. No, we're here to be really fucking brave and look at what we want and look at, like, where we want our lives to go and really reverse engineer it back to what do you need to do today, right? 20 years from you. From you. It's 20 years from now you is not grateful for you trying to do it yourself. 20 years from now, you is looking back and saying, thank fuck you invested in some help that sped things up so we could get here as fast as we did. Thank God, right? Like 20 years from now, you has this incredible life and they couldn't get there on their own, right? Because the skills, the tools, the knowledge that got you here to this place in this moment where you're sitting and you're watching this live, or maybe you're watching this recording, or maybe I'll turn this into a reel. Wherever you're watching this, okay, you got to this point where you are with all the skills and tools and know how that you have all that's not going to get you to the next stage. To get to the next stage, you're going to need some different skills and you're going to need some different tools and you're going to need some different know how. And sure, you could waste the next five or ten years trying to gather all that yourself. By the way, if you spend that much time trying to gather it all yourself, it's all going to be out of date by the time you can put it all together, right? Because things are moving so fast. TikTok didn't, didn't exist when I started my business just five years ago. Okay? Now it's changing the game. Short form video didn't exist when I started my business. Like, if I were just trying to figure it out all myself, I would still be trying to figure out like how to, how to do the Facebook groups thing. Which by the way, don't, don't waste your time there. You need to invest in help, you need to invest in guidance. You need to invest in someone else doing some of the thinking for you because it can be their job to stay up to date. It can be their job to just point you in the right direction. And if you don't, if you're trying to do it yourself, I'm calling bullshit. I'm, I'm, I'm pointing at you and I'm saying you are being a massive weenie right now and you are betting on your failure and not on your success. You are actively trying to prevent good things from happening to you. You're actively putting a huge obstacle in the way of you getting to the life that you actually want to live. Let me see. That is the best plan. A. I think you're talking about me when I said. Or not me. You're talking about when I said you can work full time and start a business. I think Randy let me know. I fell behind in the comments. Don't give up a guaranteed money for some maybe money. No, no. But also like the maybe money. Invest time in that. Invest money to make it real money. Right? Maybe money. So, like, here's an example. When I started my business, I started off as a dating coach for Matt. I talk about this a lot. All right? I went out, I announced it everywhere. I marketed it. I, you know, built a whole brand around it. Guess how many men signed up for dating Coach with me. Coaching with me. 1. The rest of my clients were women. The universe responded and was like, no, we don't really like that for you, but let's candy some women. By the way, only one of the women actually stuck with the dating topic. Everyone else was having trouble at work. They needed leadership and executive coaching, not dating coaching. Because how they were being at work was actually getting in the way of how they could even have a personal life right now. So I went from dating coach for men that have to dating coach for women to okay, I think I'm an executive leadership coach now. Went back and got some more training for that, right? Because I want to make sure that I'm actually advising people correctly. And then all my friends from coaching school or my coach training program were like, hey, wait a minute, how did you get clients like that? Because we're struggling. We don't know how to do this. How did you do that? They asked me and I started showing them, you know, and I, I kind of realized, like, wait, I took it for granted that I came from like a whole career in sales and marketing, right? Like, oh yeah, like, doesn't everyone work in sales and marketing? No, not everyone. Not everyone has that skill. And so I started showing them and I realized I had actually come up like with really awesome framework for myself. And when I started showing to other people, it worked for them too. And I realized in showing them that I actually like doing that work better than helping like busy executives become better at their jobs like that. I mean, sure, it was, it was fine. I really like, I loved the people I worked with, okay? But the problems they came to me with, I was just like, like anyone, any coach can be helping you with this. This isn't really like something that I can do specially. But I wouldn't have gotten to that ultimate niche. I wouldn't be here right now sharing this with you right now, with my business in the place that it is right now if I hadn't started somewhere. So Randy, to your point that maybe money, you have to go after it, you can't, you can't look at it like it's maybe money. You have to look at it like this is what I want to do. And over hell and high water, I'm going to make it happen. I don't know how. I'm going to let the universe tell me as I go, right? It has to be a non negotiable. It can't. We can't look at it as maybe money. We have to look at it as here's what I want to do and here's the impact I want to have in the world and here's how much money I'm going to make and I'm going to figure out a way to make this real, right? You can't do that on your own. I wouldn't have gotten to where I am today if I hadn't invested in some help to get to where I am. Okay. Now the thing about the help that I invested in is it was, it was great. It was great. But also there was so much more that I needed. There was so much more. There was so much I didn't know that I had to figure out. And sure, I had this whole background in sales and marketing, but of course, like, the sales and marketing that I did was not for my business, it was for another business. Right? And so one of the things that I have made a, a core mission in my business is to create programs that would help the me of five years ago, that would help the me's, the people out there who are just starting out, who don't know what they don't know, who get really like stopped in their tracks from the overwhelm because there's just so much you need to know when you start a business. And one of the things that I am so excited that I'm launching this week actually, is the build your own business beginner group program. Now it's really affordable compared to my other programs. I wanted to make it so I wanted to make it affordable because there are so many people who are struggling financially right now who are trying to do it themselves. And because they're trying to do it themselves, they are actually digging themselves deeper into a hole that they, they're going to have a really hard time getting out of once this recession is over. I, I have emailed and texted a bunch of people who, you know, like, I know would be amazing for this program. And it's really painful for me to see them when, you know, they were committed last year to trying to figure it out themselves. This year they're needing to ask for help from family members to pay the bills because the recession is really hurting them. Prices are going up, their pay hasn't increased, or they were also laid off. The thing that will help you most right now, if you're wanting to start a business, if you're wanting to make money from it, is doing something that will jumpstart that success, okay? Because the more money you are making right now, the more options you will have down the line. The more money you make right now. And to say that again, the more cash you have, the more options you have, the more freedom, the more choice you have. That's what I want for you. So here's what you're gonna do. You're gonna call bullshit on yourself for saying you don't have the time. You are going to figure out a way to get the help that you need to do the things that you have never done. You are going to stop trying to figure things out on your own. You have your own gifts. You have the thing that you can do in the world that people will pay you for because you are fucking brilliant at it. Stay there. Let other people do the thinking for you. You know, and regardless of what this is, if it's building a business, if you need to start a business and you don't know how to do sales and marketing and create an offer and all that stuff, I help with that. Call me. DM me. Book a call with me, whatever. We will get on the phone. I will tell you about the program. No pressure, but if it's something else, call an expert in that space. Ask them. See if you can hire them. See if you can get some advice from them. Stop trying to figure out everything on your own. It's not going to work out. And you know it's not going to work out. That's why you're doing it, because you're so afraid that you're actually going to succeed at this. That's way scarier than. Than something failing. Right? Because we've failed at so much stuff so far. You know, life is full of failures. Adam Taylor, the inner weenie. Yes. Yeah, we all have an inner weenie. And sometimes it's an outer weenie. Well, no, that sounds bad. No, sometimes we live our lives as the weenie. Right. That's why I wear a hot dog costume all the time. Right. Because you know what? Let's stop it. Let's stop being a hot dog. Let's stop being a weenie. The outer weenie, you guys. Oh, God. You're missing. Oh, no. I've poor connection on Instagram. Oh, well. And we're back. Okay. Rohit. Yes. Happy face back. It's so true to skills. Yeah. Mm. Randy, I agree. I was just saying that have that perfect plan in place. Yeah. Well, also, you know, like, let's not get attached to the word and sorry, Randy, I don't mean to, like, be pulling apart everything that you're saying. Hi, the gazelle. Welcome. But like, let's not get attached to having a perfect plan. Right? I've created lots and lots of perfect plans. And guess what? I'm already behind on this plan. This is. This is. This plan is absolutely incredible. It's perfect. But here's the problem is I'm not perfect. I'm not perfect. I fall behind on my own plans. And you know what? That's okay. One of the things that I remind my clients of is that we're not here designing businesses that can't withstand us being human. Right? We're not building businesses that can't withstand us being human. Our businesses have to be able to withstand us getting sick and getting tired and getting burnt out and good things happening in our lives, like. Like loved ones getting married and having babies and us taking some time off to be with them. And also the bad things that happen, you know, losing people, losing pets. Hi, Jason. Welcome. Our businesses have to be able to handle us being human. Okay? We have this expectation of ourselves. And this is also your inner weenie speaking expecting you to be perfect all the time in every single way because it knows that you're going to fail. Right? What a beautiful way for things to go off the tracks and fail than you failing at being this perfect mechanical human being anyway. So you are going to stop this whole narrative of I'm going to try it out and see if it works, then if it does, then I'll invest in help. Fuck that. You're going to go invest in help now. If you need help in your business, you know who to call. If I'm the right person for you, amazing. If I'm not, I will send you in the direction of some other really, truly incredible humans and supports that will work better for you. And if it's not starting a business, go and find help in whatever area that's in. Stop trying to do it all yourself because you haven't done it yet. Right? And if you haven't done it yet, it's not likely that you're going to do it. Deal? Okay. I have to go on with my day. I have to do a lot of filming because Be Beginner is launching next week and the person who was supposed to keep all of the videos and organize them from the last round did not. And so there are some that are missing. So I have to refilm for anyone who is excited to come and join DM me because doors close on Wednesday and I have a couple really cool bonuses that are going through on Tuesday, so. But if you don't sign up by Tuesday, you're not going to get them. Rohit, what are my plans for this coming week? Work. I'm working. Here's the thing. What's her name? Kerry Washington. I wrote this in the description. Kerry Washington. You know, there's this viral TikTok right now or reel or whatever of an interview that she did where she's saying, you know, you can't pray to God that you're going to make the bus and then walk slowly to the bus because you're not going to make the bus. Right? If you want to pray to God that you're going to make the bus, you have to fucking run. You have to run as fuck hard and as fast as you can right now. There are times where you're gonna have to do that in your business. You know, I, you know, normally I work, you know, four to six hours a day, like actual work, like generative work where I'm creating content or helping clients or whatever. And usually that's like as much as I can do. But there are times in my business where I'm in launch mode and I'm working 10, 12, 14 hour days. I'm doing what I love. I'm doing absolutely what I love. So it doesn't really burn me out. But that's not all the time. And if you want your dreams to come true, if you want this business to become something that will actually generate wealth for you, you have to find the thing that you can. You can do both. You know, you have to figure out how to create something that you can do four to six hours a day. And you have to be willing to occasionally give it a whole lot more. Anyway, I love you all. This is. Oh, my God. I've been going live for 35 minutes. Holy smokes. Let me see. Jason the Gazelle. John. Catherine, Max Garcia. Thank you all for joining. Let me see. Rohit, Randy, Adam. Who else? Augustine. Thank you all for joining on Javi. Thank you. Go. Stop being a weenie, everyone, and let me know if you have help. I need to have help. All right, I love you all. Happy Saturday. I'm Katie McManus, business strategist, Money mindset coach. I will talk to you soon and have an amazing weekend.
