Energy Reset!

Katie McManus explains why recovery isn't the same as self-care: recovery is what you need when self-care fails. She shares how her daughter Luna's ICU stay taught her to build a business you can actually leave, and pulls three tarot cards that map onto the hard truth that disruption forces alignment.
Taste yo yo yo yo Words I can taste yo, yo, yo I can taste yo yo, yo yo Words I can taste yo yo, yo I can taste yo yo, yo yo y.
Hello and welcome. I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and money mindset coach. I am coming to you live from the Instagram and the facebooks and the LinkedIn and YouTube and Twitter. Well, I don't know why I pronounce Twitter that way. Twitter. Good evening everyone. Coming to you live because now earlier than I normally do because I have a very exciting event that I'm going to at 7pm Lauren Lefkowitz is doing a an amazing mastermind. I'm so excited about it. Anyway, coming to you to talk about recovery and rest and self care, which I have come to peace with this term. I've had a difficult relationship with this term because when I used to hear about self care, I used to think, someone's going to try to make me take a fucking bubble bath. I can't even say the word. I hate it so much. I hate baths. Like I love. I bathe, don't worry. But I just, I don't like the idea that I'm supposed to sit in a tub of hot water and relax. That doesn't sound relaxing to me at all. Anyway, I've had so many of my humans, my humans, people in my personal life, people. My chair just keeps rolling this way. Anyway, so many people in my personal life, in my business, clients, people who I, you know, work with. Just. I'm not going to name any names. Don't worry, I'm not going to, I'm not going to tell on any of you who are burning themselves out. You're working way too hard, burning yourselves out and not doing good self care. And it's costing them and it's cost, it's cost me in the past. And so I wanted to come on and talk about the difference between self care and recovery because this is a very important question that I got this week. A client asked me, what's the difference? Because I kept telling them, you know, you need to do better self care. You need to be more diligent about self care. And they kept saying, okay, well I'm recovering. And I kept saying, well, that's not self care. And they asked, what's the difference between self care and recovery? And my answer was, recovery is what you need to do when you are shitty at doing self care. The goal is to never need to recover. The goal is to never have to come back from burnout the goal is to just, you know, tend to your body and your needs and your energy throughout your life. You know, this is one of the reasons why so many people start businesses. And it's also the hardest thing to manage when you start a business because, like, you genuinely, like, you want to throw your all into it and you're the only one who is like, left holding it at the end of the day. Um, one of the biggest markers for success, and I don't say this lightly, I mean this, I'm dead serious. One of the biggest markers for success is your ability to put work away and focus on your life. Now I say this, I struggle with this too. I'm not perfect. I'm not ever going to come on here and tell you, like, I'm holier than thou and I'm so amazing at this and blah, blah, blah, blah, like, ew, gross. No, I suck at this. I work so hard to get better at this. And I can tell you that every single damn time I prioritize my own self care, my business reaches new heights. Okay? I hit my first $10,000 month, my first three $10,000 months when I made a goal of writing my Peloton 100 days in a row. Now I'll own that. There were like five days in there where I rode for like a minute because I was just, I was so exhausted, I couldn't deal with it. And it was in the middle of the pandemic. But like, that wasn't every single day. That was five times out of 100, okay? It's showing up for yourself. It's allowing for yourself to step away in a way that like, takes your mind and your focus away from your business. Okay? That is the most powerful thing that you can do for your business. When we don't do this, when we don't get good at stepping away from our business, what ultimately happens is our bodies catch up with us. You know, what's, what's that saying? The body keeps the score. So you'll get sick, you'll get injured, and while you're sick and injured, you will feel so much fear and panic because you have never stepped away from your business. And here you are and you feel like garbage and you really just don't have a choice. We have to be so conscious when we're designing our businesses, right? We have to be conscious of designing them in a way that if we do get taken out for a week or so, it's not a big deal. You know, I really didn't experience this in any Real, real sense of the term. Until this past February when Luna got really sick. Like, if you. And if you're new here and you don't know who Luna is. Luna is my. My dog. She. When she got sick, she wasn't even two years old. She turned to at the end of February, thank God, and, you know, she got the dog flu that was going around, and she got a viral pneumonia on top of it and literally almost died. She had to be in the ICU at Penn University for five nights, which, yes, was very expensive. And if you do not have pet insurance, go get pet insurance. Please, please, like, learn from my lesson. But I was beside myself. It. It, like, she's my child. She is my baby. She's like my soulmate animal, right? And I canceled everything. I. I couldn't be in my business. I couldn't do anything. And it felt really good to know that I had put these pieces into place. So, so that when something like this happens, because unfortunately, just it's the nature of being human, there are things that are just going to take us out. I was able to not. Not lose my business, you know, and not fear that I was going to lose my business. You know, there's. There's the thing. There's a thing that we're all afraid of, right? Things going terribly, terribly wrong and, like, crumbling in front of us and, um, not having any control over it. And then there's experiencing all the fear before that even happens. Like, how good are we at experiencing fear of something before it ever happens? And usually it never happens, right? I mean, how many times have you woken up from a dream where someone you love died and, like, you kind of have to work through all the emotions of it, you know, even though it didn't really happen, even though you wake up and you're like, oh, my God, that was just dream, thank God. You know, you might, like, go around your house, they live with you, and just make sure that they're actually there and breathing. And, you know, but you do. You have to work through the emotion of it. It's exhausting. It's absolutely exhausting. And we do this to ourselves in our business all the time. And it doesn't. Doesn't serve us. It is so unhealthy for us. And there's a way to prevent that. And it's honestly being really good and diligent about taking time out from your business. And it's one of those things that if you don't do, like, life will do it for you. That's. It There's. There's no way around it. You know, there's. I mean, there's some really good models that I have in my life who do this really well, where you know, they, you know, have a tough morning, and so they take the rest of the day. The rest of the day off with no guilt. No guilt. I actually took a portion of today off. I was feeling really energetically drained, and I realized that, like, I worked way too much for the last couple days. I've been working on a lot of projects, you know, trying to get things in by a certain time, being really creative. And I really just kind of like, sapped all my energy, you know. And, you know, your energy is one thing, but here's the thing. When your energy gets really low, it stops just being an energy problem, and it starts being a nervous system problem, right? Your nervous system starts getting so activated when you are low on energy, when you haven't been taking good care of yourself, when you feel like you have to be on a million percent all the time, it becomes a nervous system problem because it's like, well, what's the. Like, what will happen if we're not, you know, it genuinely can become a fight flight, freeze or fawn. And that is not a healthy place to be operating from. Like, your cortisol levels will shoot through the roof. You know, once that happens, like, your eating schedule is going to change. You might start feeling sick to your stomach. You might have adrenaline going through your body. You're not going to be good at what you do. I don't know about you guys, but, like, I'm not creative when I have cortisol and adrenaline going through my body. No, not at all. Today it was incredible. So, like, I literally, like, just went and, like, laid in bed for two hours in the middle of the day. Didn't nap, just kind of laid in bed, played some music, just sat there looking at the ceiling, relaxed, played on my phone, watched, like, Instagram reels. I. And like, all of a sudden, like, I felt better. It was just like. It was like day and night. There was just like this. At one point in these two hours, I just. I had this, like, burst of energy, right? And I'm going through these Instagram reels and there's this painter that I followed for a while, and she does these really cool. Like, she doesn't paint, like, people or anything, but she does, like, this geometric, like, like, you know, swaths of color. And it's multimedia and it's all stuff. And I'm watching her stuff And I was just kind of going down the rabbit hole and I inspired that. I just went and bought some paint on Amazon. And this paint's gonna arrive. It's probably gonna be my new hyper focus for a month. But like that is the difference. Like if you had asked me what I was inspired to do this morning, I would have been like, drink coffee. Drink coffee and maybe like, you know, answer emails. Is that the right answer? That's not the right answer. That's not something that you're inspired to do. You know it. When we rest, we, we really do tap into those creative reservoirs that we have within our us. And that is what makes our businesses so much fun to run. So wanted to come on and just talk at you and tell you if you aren't taking care of yourself. Okay, this is your devil's advocate to like say cut that shit out now. Whack my finger at you. Stop it. Stop it. Your body needs this. Your soul needs this. I don't. I wish I pulled some data before I came live. I'm just going to make it up. Like, you know, if you have cortisol running through your system all the time, it shortens your life. That's. I mean, that's known. I don't know by how much. Like I said, I didn't look up the data. And when you don't rest, you cause that cortisol to go up. Right. Things that are really helpful for this, you know, designing with your loved ones, telling them, you know, if there's something that they do that activates you, you know, saying, hey, listen, like, can you do this? I've had to do this with my family sometimes, you know, I think we all have. Right? Yeah. So you have to take care of yourself. You have to take care of yourself. If you have overstretched yourself, if you've over committed, you get to say no, you get to pull back. You get to change your mind. Full permission to change your mind. All right? You are in choice with your life. Okay? You may feel trapped into whatever you've agreed to do. Guess what? You make the rules, babe. You make the rules. You can do whatever the fuck you want. All right? And know that if you make a decision that is meant to protect you, to care for you, to. To honor your energy and what you have to give the world, that doesn't make you bad. It doesn't make you a bad person. It doesn't make you evil. It just means that you are doing what is best for you. And guess what? That is all any of Us can do. Right? There's no. There's no one person out there who is, like, concerned about taking care of Katie McManus and concerned that I'm managing my life correctly. Right? I mean, like. I mean, I want to say that would be nice, but that would also be massively creepy. Like, who is this person and why do they care so much? Like, I want that person to care about themselves, right? I want you to care about yourself. I want you to manage yourself, you know? And if you don't do it, no one is going to step in and do it for you. No one is going to come in and say, you know what? You need to take some time off. Right? We. We will definitely, absolutely have friends and loved ones and coaches and mentors who will call bullshit on us and say, you need to rest, you need to recover, and you need to start creating practices that help you care for yourself along the way. Okay? But those people can't be worried about you 24 7. They can't be managing your life for you. You have to manage your life. All right? It's wild. So I pulled some cards as the music was playing and as we were getting set up from my Mystic Mondays deck. And I'm a little. So I don't normally get, like, the. The normal archetype cards, but we got three guys. We got the Tower, we got the Lovers, and we got the Wheel of Fortune. All right, so I'm gonna. I don't know this deck. Like, I'm not actually a tarot reader. I just, like, really like pulling them because I think they're so beautiful. And I think the messages are just generally helpful. Right? And sometimes I'm like, oh, God, that's super relevant. So I'm going to read the Tower first. This is number 16. Okay, so the tower. Mars is the planet that is associated with the tower. Oh, God. Okay, so this represents destruction, abrupt change, and lightning flash. Fast as a bolt of lightning. Your world has instantaneously shifted before your eyes. The Tower is a card of sudden change, one that shakes the foundations of what you have built. It can be subconscious, like beliefs that. That have been established by your parents, or it can be literal, like a fire that has burned down the house. Regardless, the turn of events has split you wide open, cutting to the core of your being relevant. Yeah. This card is a rude awakening for you to transform your attitudes about previous beliefs. Okay, so like, workaholism, like, gotta transform that. Salvage what you can from the wreckage and make a game plan to move forward. This is also A card of rebuilding after loss. Build yourself from the ground up. How will you handle this chaotic time? With grace and ease or raw emotion? The choice is yours. With destruction comes creation. So all is not lost. If you guys just saw that, I definitely just, like, didn't get all that's been dropped in my mouth Airplane moment. I think I talked about this last night. You know, I don't know if you guys have seen Airplane. It's like the guy has a drinking problem and he keeps missing his mouth. That's. That's my reality. I just. I love. Yeah. Anyway, okay, so next we have the lovers. Okay, lovers. Gemini. I'm a Gemini. It's Gemini season. Hello. Isn't that cute? I love flamingos. I actually have. I have bed sheets that are flamingos. They're. They make me so happy, and I feel like a child every time I go to sleep with them. All right, so the lovers obviously represents love, alignment and choices. Love is in the air. A strong bond between two lovers is flourishing, and it can feel like utter perfection. There's passion, desire, and mutual attraction. And this can often reflect marriage, a soulmate connection, or a super close intimate relationship. Mind, body, and soul are intertwined, completing each other to feel whole. Besides partners, this could also mean that you are aligning yourself to much your. Yourself much more closely with your core, core values. Okay, so this brings us back to self care and like, really taking care of yourself. Choices will be presented to you, testing your assessment of what feels best for you. Stay true to yourself, even if outside noise may say otherwise. Only you know what is what your true desires are, and only you can make those decisions. To be honest with yourself, your intentions will point you to the path. To the path to. I'm sorry, the. The grammar on this one is a little weird. Your intentions will point you to the path of your heart's deepest desires. There's a. There's a word in there that shouldn't be there. I can read. I promise. So that was the lovers. Right? So we have the tower, which is all about destruction, things falling apart, and creation coming out of it. And then we have getting aligned to yourself and taking care of yourself and being kind and. Hello, welcome. And next we have the Wheel of Fortune. The Wheel of Fortune is a really powerful card. Isn't that pretty though? Whoever designed these, I need to look up who the artist is because they're just absolutely gorgeous. That is number 10. All right, so Wheel of Fortune represents change, fate, and karma. And the planet is Jupiter. I don't know if anyone Knows anything about the planets in this stuff. Just feel like I should share it with you Anyway. Change is coming whether you like it or not. Fate has stepped in, is now calling the shots, moving you into a critical new phase of your life. You may be feeling like things are outside of your control and they are. You can choose to complain or you can choose to adapt. There is no, there is comfort in uncertainty, even if the unknown feels intimidating. Everything happens for a reason. So have faith that these changes are happening for your highest good. Life is full of cycles and it's impossible to have the good times without the bad times. Contrast is not only necessary, but inevitable. Just because events feel like they are outside of your control doesn't mean you have to take a back step seat. Remain active and avoid complacency. Trust that this is exactly where you need to be right now. Yeah, so we have, we have like big things happening for a lot of people right now. And also I just love this, this like underlines exactly what I was talking about. You know, if you're not taking care of yourself, you're going to have that destruction. Things are going to fall apart literally. There's going to be like a fertile ground from there though that you can create something new, you can get more aligned to your. And then, you know, the wheel of fortune just kind of rounded all that out. Like everything is happening for you, you know, for your highest good. Right. So just want to call out like if you haven't been taking care of yourself lately, if you like have just been really shitty at self care and you have to do some recovery time, know that like this is meant to happen right now, right? You, you weren't supposed to do the work before now. Like this is the time. There's, there's something, there's something happening that is calling this work where you get to prioritize yourself. Fourth. And it's, it's going to be for your highest good. That's it. I think, I think that is a mic drop moment. Anyway, I, yeah, that's, I'm actually going to go and journal about this because this is really interesting for myself. Anyway, back to the point. Take care of yourself. Don't burn yourself out. Design your business so that you can step away from it. Literally. Design your business so that if you need to take a whole month off, you have the ability to take a whole month off. All right? Now I want to, I want to call out. That doesn't necessarily mean that you can take a whole month off right now. Right? You're going to have to work hard to get your business to that point. And that's okay. But as you're working hard, remember to rest, remember to recover, remember to rejuvenate, remember to just care for yourself, okay? It is going to be the name of the game for your long term success. All right. With that, thank you all for joining. We had some some quiet people in the audience today, but thank you for joining. I'm Katie McManus, business strategist, Money mindset, coach. I will be going again live tomorrow or live again tomorrow. And I will be announcing my surprise that I have been teasing for a few days now. Really excited about that. Anyway, love you all. Have an amazing night. And if you're going to Lauren Lefkowitz's thing, then I will see you there. All right. Bye.
