Halloween Ask me Anything!

Katie McManus carves pumpkins while answering viewer questions about starting a service business, her six months living in France at 20, and Halloween traditions. She shares practical advice: specialize and keep marketing. Dinner is steak, lobster tails, and s'mores.
I can taste yo yo, yo y I can taste yo yo, yo I can taste yo yo, yo yo I can taste. Hello and happy Halloween, everyone. I'm gonna pull this closer. We're doing something different today. Hello. Just setting myself up on Tick Tock. Is it going? I don't know if it's going. Anyway, I think it's going. There we go. Oh, hello. Okay, they're notifying viewers. Hi everyone. Okay, so we have something a little different today. It's an ask me anything. I'm trying to kill two birds with one stone. You can't tell I needed to carve pumpkins. I'm gonna move this so you guys can see I'm carving pumpkins and we have just a lot going on and I needed to go live also. So let me grab my first pumpkin. We're gonna do this big papa right. Hello. And then we're doing an ask me anything. So if you have any questions about starting your business about Halloween, then please pop them in the chat. Hello and welcome. Hahaha, it's freezing. It is so flipping cold. And I'm sitting on a very cold metal seat. Okay, so what should I do with this guy? I feel like we've got some scar tissue. I feel like we could do something kind of fun. Welcome. Hello. Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. My family, we do this kind of weird tradition where we make like a whole feast of food and we eat it at a table on the front lawn. And then we basically just like are outside having dinner when trick or treaters come. Our neighbor hands out wine and we try to not freeze our butts off because it's always so cold. Okay, so that is going to be the head. Hello, welcome. Hi hag. Welcome. We are carving pumpkins here. Let me show you guys what I'm doing here. Yeah, this may be dangerous for me. Let's see. Oh God, I haven't carved pumpkins in so long. I'm gonna like cut myself. Oh, Jesus decline. Sorry. Hi, Ann. No, I'm doing a live. You can come say hi if you want. I'm doing a live while I carve the pumpkins and I have stuff in the oven, so. But yeah, all right. Hello, welcome. Yeah, any questions you have about your business, about Halloween in general, just pop them in the chat. And welcome. Happy Halloween, everyone. Oh my gosh. It's been one of those days where there's a gazillion things that I said I was going to get to and I am in the middle of the mall. But also we have Time sensitive stuff that needs to happen that we are making happen right here, right now. Okay? So I wish. I mean, I know you. I know that you could do this and it would be a nightmare, but I wish they could, like, have a service where they emptied out the pumpkins for you. Because this is not the fun part. This is the boring part. Okay. All right, what should I do with this pumpkin, guys? Okay, the next one, I'm just gonna do a circle. I'm not gonna worry about doing a fun pattern. Okay. So I have gotten it all around. There we go. Perfect. Okay. Hi, dad. Hi. I'm going live while I carve the pumpkins. Oh, man. Welcome. Okay, I still need suggestions for what I should do with this. Am I making it scary? Am I making it funny? Am I making it friendly? And please note that my artistic abilities are limited. So. Hello, welcome. Happy Halloween. No, I don't know if I'm actually going to clean this out. This seems like a lot of work. So we're just going to get to work on the. On the fun part. All right. Should I freehand it or Should I. Should I. Oh, my God, that pumpkin's so dirty. Gross. Okay, should I freehand it or should I draw something feeling like I should freehand? Because I'm probably gonna draw and not stick to it. Okay, so we're gonna start with the nose first. I feel like I'm trying to be a pumpkin carving professional. I'm not. I have no idea what I'm doing. We're gonna do a little nose first, and I hope this works. Got a sharp little nose. Help me move this one over. Okay. Move this one over there. Okay. Okay. Come on. And any questions you have about your business, about pumpkin carving, go ahead and pop them in the chat and I'll answer them. And happy Halloween, everyone. Oh, man. Hello, welcome. Hi, Roland. Oh, man. Let's see. I'm getting used to the whole live where you just kind of hang out and do stuff. In my normal stuff, I do more conversational things. Feel like eyebrows shouldn't be lit up, right? No, I mean, I could totally do eyebrows. Oh, there we go. Good. You want to say hi, dad? Oh, we're going live. Hello. Okay, so I'm cooking currently. I have stuff in the oven. I'm making potatoes au gratin in a garden style. She did me dirty, though. She. Her recipe calls for, like, $50 worth of Gruyere, which, you know, like, I am not stingy on spending money on cheese. It's one of my favorite things to spend money on especially cheese. That's meant to go with potatoes, but that seems like a lot. It seems a little excessive. I feel like I did the nose too low. Like, the smile's just going to be down here. You're not really going to be able to see it. Okay, I will fix this. Maybe it doesn't have a mouth. We're just going to do a friendly one. Okay. Okay. This is gonna be a friendly pumpkin. Okay. Very good. Oh, look at that smile. Look. What should we name him? Like, he needs to be named something, and I feel like it's a he. Let's give them eyebrows. I think that would be fun. I feel like we can make them accidentally sinister. Okay. This is a big eyebrow. I shouldn't have done this. I regret this. Hi. Andrew Stout. Welcome. Happy Halloween. Carving pumpkins outside in the cold. It's very cold. So the menu tonight is we're doing steak and lobster tails, which are going real fancy. I'm making a warm brussels sprout salad and potatoes au gratin, like I said. And I think we're definitely having dessert. I don't know what else. What else are we having? Anne, what else are we having on the menu? Oh, cool. Okay. And your father has s', mores, I think. Oh, all right. So we're doing s'. Mores. I mean, I think that's okay. Rather feel disgusting from having, like, steak and lobster tails than from having candy, you know? Yeah. Oh, man. I think these. Oh, no. I think these eyebrows are uneven. If this were an eyebrow waxing salon, I would be getting, like, one star. This is not going well. I'm trying, Andrew. I'm really trying not to slice my hands, believe me. What's wrong? You okay? Oh, no. Oh, well, there we go. He has eyebrows. What do you think? That's pretty good. I'm actually pretty proud of that. Okay. All right. That's one pumpkin. Four more go. He's got a little hat. There we go. Okay, so we're gonna put him to the back over here. Okay. With a mid bite. All right. Okay. So I made. I made the mistake of getting, like, five pumpkins, thinking that I would carve them all. It's not gonna happen. We're gonna do. We're gonna do a couple. Hello. Welcome, welcome. I'm gonna do a couple. We're gonna do enough to let trick or treaters. I mean, we're gonna be sitting out on the lawn. We're going to be cold and sitting on the lawn. Obviously, we're going to have candy. We don't need lanterns. Why did I put so much stress on myself to do pumpkin lanterns? Okay. You want to make sure the kids don't get at it. Okay. All right. And if you're just joining us, welcome. I am carving pumpkins and trying not to hurt myself. It is really cold. That is our neighborhood rooster making a ruckus. Oh, good. Hello and welcome. Oh, what else of that is that? It's really pretty. Oh, gosh. Bienvenue, Shay McManus. Okay. Oh, yeah. Alrighty. Oh, crap. I'm gonna have to clean that one out, aren't I? I'm gonna be putting candles in here. Oh, well. All right. All right. What should I do with this one, guys? Should I make this one scary? I feel like this one has to be scary and sinister. Oh, my God. And really, any question you have about your business, you want to ask me. I can talk and I can carve at the same time because I'm talented, although not talented at singing. Okie dokie. So here we go. We're gonna have to get. The French is coming out. Bonjour, madame. Bonjour, monsieur Commeau. Sava. Fun fact. I lived in France for six months when I was 20, and I went there so that I could learn French because I got tired of trying to learn it from flashcards. The only problem is that when you don't do it all the time, you lose it. So I basically only speak French when I am speaking to Luna and when I make up silly songs for myself. So slimy. Gross. Gross. I didn't get anything to wipe my hands with. This is a problem. All right, let's just do the bush. Okay. I just used the parsley in our garden to wipe my hands. Sorry. Parsley. So if anyone uses that parsley. If anyone, like, comes over to this house and borrows parsley from the front garden, just be aware some of them are pumpkin flavored. Okay, so what side should we do? I think this side. I think this is a pretty side for the pumpkin. Thank you, Stout. Thank you, Andrew Stout, and welcome. This isn't Ask me Anything. So any question you have on your business, please feel free to pop them in the chat while I do my pumpkin carving. And this might have been an awful idea. What should I do for this one? I feel like maybe not. Maybe scary is beyond my skill set. Maybe I need to do, like, goofy. Oh, I could do, like, the tongue out. That's kind of what we're done, though. What should I do? I do a pentagram that is like, I think I'm gonna Do that. I think that's gonna be a good one. All right, I'm gonna have to do. Ew. How do I want to do this? Okay, we're gonna have to draw o. So the problem with pumpkins is they're bumpy and they're hard to draw on. Like, it's like whoever designed them, like, didn't know that we were going to be carving them into. Really inconsiderate. Super inconsiderate. All right, you good, dad? Okay. Okey dokey. So, okay, let me see. What would be my advice to someone who's starting out, starting a business? Okay, so my. My number one piece of advice to someone who's starting a business is start off doing one thing. Don't, don't, like, get caught up in canduitis. If you're going to be a bookkeeper, be a bookkeeper. Like, don't also try to do taxes. If you're doing taxes, don't also try to do bookkeeping. Like, like start. Start small. Get known for something that you do really well. You can always branch out later, but it's way easier to refer you business when people understand exactly how you're useful to them. And I get sucked into, oh, I could do this and, oh, I could do that also. But for instance, like, if you are an Instagram specialist, it's really tempting to also sell, like, LinkedIn coaching and LinkedIn done for you stuff. But if you're not that familiar with LinkedIn, you're just gonna end up with unhappy clients. So you want to start small, you want to specialize, and you want to. Oh, God, this is getting bad. And, like, just do what you do really well. Don't. Don't think that you have to do everything to be impressive. Like, I want you to think of like, 1-800-JUNK. All right? They're not also building houses. They're not also doing landscaping. They are collecting junk. Like, that's their thing. That's. That's their shtick. And they don't. They don't try to branch out and do other. Okay, so how do I want to do this? This is tricky because I want the center bit to stay in. And I have this bit. I think I did too close over here. Okay, we're gonna. We're gonna make it work. We're gonna make it work. Just like Tim Gunn says in Project Runway, make it work. Okie dokie. All right. This also might be a geometrically incorrect pentagram, but what are you gonna do? Nothing. Oh, no, this is bad. Can you hear the Dogs. The dogs bark at freaking everyone. My second tip is to never stop marketing. Never stop marketing. I forget to market sometimes. You know, here's the difference marketing can make is you're building awareness constantly talking with this knife. You're building awareness constantly with your business, right? If you're full, great. You're building awareness, you're building your next wave of clients. If you're full and you can't take any clients, great, you're gonna have a wait list. But if you're not full and you're not marketing, then what are you doing? Oh, this isn't going the way I want. Oh, okay. Well, we're gonna roll with the punches we have. I accidentally punched out this hole. You know, surround yourself also with business besties. I'm very lucky. My dad over here who's on his phone is a business owner. He runs his own business. And so whenever I think like I'm going crazy, like, like this is hard and I don't understand why it's so hard. Like he kind of puts me in my place because it's like, well, not puts me in my place but like he's like, yeah, this is part of running a business. You're gonna have ups and downs. Oh God. You know, I give up. We're just going to do a full on star, that's it. I'm not in trying to get fancy with this. Oh. Because my fingers are getting really cold and I feel like I'm going to accidentally chop off a finger if I try to stick with this fancy idea. Oh God. Oh. All right. I mean it's not going to look bad. It's going to be a star. I was just thinking it could be a little more like, like devil worshipy. I guess it should have been upside down. Let me see. Joe Kane, do you prefer organic marketing or non digital avenues? I, I'm all about social media. I think, I think social media is like the coolest thing we've ever invented in the history of time. Like there's like I just signed a client in Australia. Like Australia, the other end of the world. You know, she discovered me through social media. Or maybe, maybe she was a referral. But still like the fact that, that someone could sign up to work with me from around the world, that's pretty neat. There we go. We have a star. That's pretty neat. I am also a big fan of networking and going out and doing stuff. But like, you know, like I'm lazy. I want to be able to post something once and then not worry about it so much pumpkin on me. Let me see. Great question, though. Mod butt. Sorry. Okay. All right, guys. I think. I think this is as far as we're gonna get with the pumpkin life. It's colder than I thought it would be. Anyway, Andrew and Joe, thank you for joining. Yeah, of course. Happy to answer. And everyone on TikTok, thank you for joining. I'm going to be finishing this up because I'm freezing and I need to go check stuff in the oven, but thank you for coming and happy Halloween, and we'll see you soon. Bye.
