A short first-person monologue (YouTube transcript) by Katie McManus reflecting on reactions to fluctuating engagement on social media (specifically LinkedIn). The speaker contrasts two responses: blaming oneself (assuming content was poor) versus blaming the platform/algorithm (being angry at the company). She invites viewers to share which tendency they have.
Should we have more Audacity? A few weeks ago I saw this post by this guy on LinkedIn and he was angry at LinkedIn because he previously was creating content and getting a ton of engagement, ton of comments and likes and all that jazz. And his engagement had like kind of dropped off. And if you're not familiar with LinkedIn and how it works, like they have ups and downs and all arounds and the engagement that you get on your content there and recently, yeah, like the algorithm has absolutely sucked for content creators on that platform. But he was mad, like he went on a tirade at LinkedIn. He was fully pissed that he has spent so much time building his following there, creating content, creating content that keeps people on the platform. And he was angry at LinkedIn for them fucking with their own algorithm that plummeted his engagement. And I can't stop thinking about this because guys, like I have never, it has never even occurred to me to be mad at a social media platform for tanking my engagement. Like every single time I've gotten bad engagement on content, I assume it's just me. I assume that the content wasn't good. I assume that like people weren't interested in what I had to say. I made it about me. So like, do we need to have more audacity? Is it reasonable for us to just be angry at the company that limits our growth like that? Like maybe we do just have to live like mediocre white guys and then we get what we want. I don't know. Tell me what's your tendency? When you create content, it does really well and then you create more content and it doesn't do very well. Like what goes through your head? Are you like me? Do you say, oh well that must just be me, I didn't do very well and blah, blah, blah. Or do you have the audacity of this guy and are you like angry at the social media platform? Wherever you're posting, please tell me in the comments.
