Katie McManus relates a personal story about breaking up at age 25, being left without furniture or money, and successfully furnishing an entire apartment by emailing friends in the San Francisco Bay Area asking for unwanted items. She emphasizes resourcefulness and the mindset that you can obtain resources through creativity and asking for help rather than money.
When I was 25 years old, I broke up with my boyfriend. And my boyfriend is older, so he kind of, like, owned our home. And when we moved in together, you know, I just kind of got rid of all my stuff because my stuff was shitty. It was stuff that people in their early 20s would have, and his stuff was nice. So when we broke up, I was stuck. I didn't really have anything, and I had, like, no money, because you don't make much money in your early 20s. And so I needed to find an apartment and I needed to furnish it, and I needed all the things and didn't have all the things, and I had, like, no money. So. So I sent an email to everyone that I knew in the San Francisco Bay area, and I basically just said in the subject, traveling garage sale, and explained my predicament in my email and told them, like, if there's anything that you want to get rid of, just email me back and tell me what you have, because I will come and pick it up. And I managed to get all my living room furniture, dining room furniture, everything that I needed for my kitchen, including this apron that I've had ever since. I've had this for 12 years now. It's one of my favorite things that I have in my kitchen. Yeah. So just a reminder to those of you out there who want to do something, but you're like, I don't have the resources for it. Guess what? You don't have to have the money to get the resources for something. You can get creative, you can ask for help in unlikely places, and you can get everything that you need. Case in point.
