Katie McManus (practical business coach) explains that new coaches/consultants don’t need formal client testimonials to land their first high-paying clients. Instead, she advises showcasing results achieved in past roles, mentoring, or informal help (e.g., negotiated raises, systems that saved millions) as proof of competence, and emphasizes authenticity (not fabricating testimonials). The video ends with a CTA to follow and share.
I'm sure you've heard the advice that you should use client testimonials to go and attract other clients. But what do you do if you're brand new and you don't have any client testimonials because you haven't worked with any clients yet? Before we dive into this, I just want to tell you you absolutely do not need testimonials to get your first few high paying clients. Yes, they absolutely help, but they are not necessary. And I should know. I've been doing this for about eight years now. I have a ton of testimonials and honestly I forget to use them and in my marketing and I still get clients. But there is a legit way around this. And no, I'm not going to tell you to lie or make anything up. So chances are, if you're starting a coaching or consulting business, it's because you are an expert at helping people in a particular area. So instead of talking about the clients that you've helped that don't exist yet, talk about the results that you've helped people or companies get in the past. And yes, even if it was through your 9 to 5 job, or mentoring someone for free, or yes, even helping a friend, maybe you coached a colleague on how to negotiate a $20,000 pay raise or you implemented a whole system change in your last job that saved your company a total of $3 million in lost revenue. Just because those people weren't technically your clients doesn't mean that you weren't instrumental in their success. And just remember that when people are asking for a testimonial or a case study of what you've done for clients before, what they're really asking for is proof that you know what you're doing. Typically, people do not care how or even if you got paid for it. I'm Katie, your practical business coach. And new business owners work with me so that they can leave their corporate 9 to 5 and replace their 6 figure salary by doing work that they love that actually helps people. If you're just starting a business, then follow me for more business strategy. And if you know someone who's starting a business and is stressing out about this stuff, go ahead and send this to them.
