If you think you can't, go take a nap

Katie McManus argues that exhaustion, hunger, and dehydration amplify self-doubt and kill creativity. Sometimes your job is literally to take a nap, eat, or drink water instead of pushing through when you're running on empty.

Hello, I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and money mindset coach. And I'm here to tell you today, stop being weenie. By the way, I got this sign, like, a year ago, and I just couldn't figure out in my old apartment a place to put it where I could go live. I also, when I ordered it, I was like, green. I love green. I don't like this green, but I do love the sign. But anyway, that's not what we're talking about tonight. We are talking about what you need to be successful in your business. And I want to preface this and actually let me just do a little housekeeping. So I am going live to the Facebooks and I am going live to LinkedIn and YouTube and Twitter. Sometimes not all of the content, the comments reach me. So if you're commenting and I'm not shouting you out, I apologize. It's not you. I'm not angry at you not holding anything against you unless you're commenting something super weird. It's just I'm not seeing it. So I will follow up and touch base with you and thank you for interacting after the fact. I always like to go and check, but sometimes I just don't see it. So, anyway, I want to start this off also with telling you that you can do this. You're starting a business. You're doing something brave. I know it's scary. I know you're having moments of doubt where you're thinking, what the hell was I thinking? You've got this. You've got this. You are doing this. Anytime you do something new, it's going to feel scary. All right? This is just something new, okay? And you, you can absolutely handle this, and you are handling it. And. Hi. Hi, Daddy. How are you? I hope I'm pronouncing your name correctly. Welcome. So I heard this thing once, and it has always stuck with me. And I don't know if it's actually true. I've never fact checked it, but someone told me once that former President Bill Clinton, whenever he had a meeting with, like, a foreign dignitary or someone that he was having to negotiate with on behalf of the country, and they were like, super grouchy, like, not cooperative, not friendly, not giving anything up, he would basically go through a little checklist and he'd ask his team, you know, to check in if this person had slept recently, if they had rested at all in the last 24 hours. He'd also have them check to see if this person had eaten and if they were hydrated, if they'd had any water. I love this because this is something that I tell my clients all the time. If you are running a business, sometimes your job is just to go take a nap. Like that is your job. For you to be at your best, for you to be able to serve your clients at their best, at your best, for you to be able to be creative to promote your business, you have to be well rested. So sometimes that means like, you know, laying down under your desk or just going to bed for an hour or you know, whatever your nap situation is. You can pull a George, George Costanza, if you'd like. The most important part here is that you set yourself up for success. Okay? When you, when you start a business, it's so common to spend the first, I don't know, two months to two years guilting yourself because you're not working the normal nine to five hours, right? It's like we leave our, our corporate nine to fives and we're like, okay, cool, I'm going to start my business and to be able to give myself any credit for doing anything, I have to be perfectly productive between 9am and 5pm Completely bypassing the fact that when we worked at a 9 to 5, we weren't completely productive from 9 to 5. That just wasn't how that went. Right. We got in, we grabbed a cup of coffee, we, you know, chatted with our work husband or wife, we checked our emails, we probably went to a meeting, we came back, we got a little work done, we went to lunch, you know, we came back, we chatted a little bit more, we did a bunch of other stuff, you know, got some work done, probably had a couple more meetings. Depending on how high up in leadership you were, you probably had a lot more meetings. We weren't productive the whole time. That, that is not how that goes. We were just paid for productivity for all 40 hours in that week. Right? In your business you're not getting paid for 40 hours of work. I'm sorry to break it to you, I wish you were. That would be amazing. It wouldn't be great if we could just like sign up for self employment and just be paid. I think that's communism, so maybe we don't want that. But anyway, socialism, yes. Communism, no. If you wanted to know my political standings anyway, but that's not what's going to happen in your business. You're not going to check in and then do a bunch of stuff and be perfectly productive for all the time. It's just not going to happen. And also, I want to call out the fact that you are the business owner and you are creating a business, right? So there's. You're not only doing all the work, but you're having to come up with what all the work is and you're having to strategize how all that work is going to make this business a success. Can we just acknowledge the sheer amount of mental power you are using just to make all these decisions, to do all this creative and strategic thinking, to give yourself a to do list every day? Okay? That is exhausting. All right? So sometimes for you to be productive in your job, in your business, in this venture that you're going on, you have to take a nap. It's like we're just like, we fast forwarded through life. We're becoming like real powerful individuals. We're generating money, and then we're right back in kindergarten. We just have to like, nap time has come back. And I just want to normalize that for you because here's what happens. When we're tired, when we're hungry, when we're hurt, when we're sick, when we're not hydrated. Water is so important. When our bodies are suffering in some way, it's like an open door policy for all of those voices of doubt in your head to come in and start whispering their little nasty words in your ear. Not like the fun nasty words, they're like the bad nasty words that make you feel like you can't do anything. All right? And the problem with that is that, like, when you're not feeling well, it's not like you can tap into your higher self. It's not like you can remind yourself, oh, no, no, no, I've got this. No, you feel like crap. You feel awful, you feel run down by the world. You feel like you can't take another thing. And especially if you're like tired and hangry at the same time. Have you ever felt top of your game when you're tired? Like you had three hours of sleep and you're hangry? Of course not. Of course not. Okay. Have you ever had a cold or the flu and felt like, yeah, I'm gonna own today? No, no, that's just not how that goes. So let's stop expecting ourselves to be able to talk ourselves out of these, like these mind traps. When we're feeling that way, we're not going to be able to. So here's what you're going to do the next time you feel like garbage for whatever reason. Maybe you just forgot to eat breakfast and it's 4pm which is really common ADHD thing to do, by the way, because we get hyper focused into something, we just forget to eat. And you like, are ready to bite someone's arm off. You are that hungry. And like the next person who tries to say something to you that will slow you down from getting snack in your body is going to like regret the day. They're going to rue the day that they decided to jump in and talk to you right now. Right? Yeah. That. That you can't tap into your higher self. That you just can't access all the belief in you that you know you have. Right. I think I went live yesterday. Was it yesterday? This week? I don't know. This week is going really fast and also really slow at the same time. Some point in the last couple days, I did a live about the commonality that a lot of my clients have and that they believe that they can do this. They just know deep in their bones they can do this. There's a caveat to that. Right. They only have that deep knowing, that deep belief when they feel, well, it doesn't happen any other time. When they feel like garbage, it goes away. Right. Um, I personally am about to cross that threshold for myself for today. Right. Um, I didn't realize that the, the thermostat where I am right now doesn't like the numbers don't correlate with how warm the room is getting. So I've had the heat on at 65 degrees, not realizing that that is actually 50 degrees. I've been freezing all day. Like, if you can see these like rosy little cheeks, you know how when you're so cold and you're just sitting, like doing work and trying not to shiver and you're like all bundled up, like you just use so much energy and you become so exhausted so fast. And also your, your cheeks just go red. That's been me today. Like in about 20 minutes I'm going to be done. I'm not going to be doing any creative work. I'm going to be checking out for the day. You might see me commenting on some LinkedIn stuff, but that's going to be like the ridiculous. Katie, not the work. Katie. We, we have to have compassion for ourselves. We cannot expect ourselves to be productive 24 7. It's just not realistic. This is. I'm, I'm so anti hustle culture for this reason. Right. Because I don't know anyone who can hustle and who can work, you know, 60, 70, 80 hours a week, much less like 40, 40 hours a week while you're doing all of your own stuff and still maintain that high level that, that like top tier, top tier belief in yourself. Like there, there are levels that you get to buy into memberships of believing in yourself. The, the top tier, the platinum model is like you never doubt yourself. The gold model is where like you only doubt yourselves on Saturdays. You have your existential crises, you maybe like have a little dip on Friday nights. The silver is just, you know, you wake up and you have like that pit of dread of like, oh no, I'm behind, but the rest of the day is okay. Anyway, a little side tangent, but you're. So here's the, the whole, the whole point of this whole live is you need to take good care of your body. You need to rest, you need to eat, you need to hydrate, okay? If you want to be successful in this business, you need to rest, you need to eat, you need to hydrate. It is so incredibly important for you to take care of your body to be successful. Because here's the thing, if you are a solopreneur or if you are an entrepreneur who's starting out and it's just you for right now, but the team is going to grow, this business can't be sustainable unless you are sustainable. If you crash and burn, the business crashes and burns, okay? There is no way around it, okay? If you are taking on clients and you are contractually obligated to provide a service to them over a certain period of time. What happens if you crash and burn? You're not able to deliver. And sure, hopefully your clients are understanding, but like some of them might need you to be productive and some of them might need their money back if they don't, can't get what they need from you, which creates a whole slew of other problems. So let me just plead to the part of you who knows that self care is important. Do this. Create practices, create routines in your day that take care of you. If you don't take care of you, no one else will. Sure, you might have a super supportive partner which like cherish them, please. You might have like amazing kids that like can are kind of self sufficient, but no one is going to check in with you and make sure you're going to bed on time, okay? No one's going to be with you all day long giving you the right amount of water, all right? You need to come up with different systems. That takes care of you. Right? Because. And hi, Steven. Welcome. Welcome all the way from Ireland. Hello. And you always come, like, right when I'm about to finish. I feel bad. I feel like you're, like, missing the show. You're gonna have to go back and watch the whole thing. It's very, very entertaining show, Steve, and I'm offended that you didn't make it for the whole. The whole bit. I mean, that's really the show. That was what I was gonna say. Now I'm just gonna leave it hanging there. So Stephen's just like, what? What was she saying? Like, what was the point? What are we talking about, guys? By the way, I should have said this in the beginning because, like, the people who, like, you know, in lives, people kind of like hop on for the first couple minutes and like, oh, cool, she's talking. I'll come back. And then they never do. So I should have said this in the beginning. On April 27th, I'm hosting with David Fryman a happy hour in New York City. It goes from 4pm to 7pm you can get tickets on Eventbrite. I'm going to be posting about it tomorrow, or maybe I don't know if I'm posting about it tomorrow, but I'll be posting about it soon. DM me and I will send you the link to buy a ticket. We have limited space because we weren't sure how many people would RCP and come, and, like, we didn't want to reserve a whole thing if we weren't going to sell the tickets because, you know, we want to make sure that people can have nice drinks while they're there anyway. Yeah. So come to that. And Stephen, thank you for joining. And duty Duddy. I just, I. I feel like there's a right way to say your name, and I know it's not the way I'm pronouncing it, and I don't want to pronounce it the wrong way. So please tell me how it's pronounced if you're still watching. Anyway, thank you all for joining. I'm Katie McManus, business strategist, Money mindset coach. Thank you for sticking with me in a super ADHD version of tonight's Live, and I will see you all tomorrow. All right, have a great day, everyone.
