Katie McManus tells ADHD business owners to stop aiming for $60,000 and build toward $300,000 instead. Designing for a low target makes scaling harder later. Start with the bigger goal and earn intermediate amounts on the way.
How much money do you actually want to make? Every single time I ask my clients this, I get two answers. And the first answer is always the weenie answer. It's the playing small, like, I'll just settle for whatever life is willing to give me answer. And usually it goes something like this, like, I would be fine if I made like $60,000. It would cover all my base expenses. I'd be able to live, afford ramen electricity, blah, blah, blah, blah. But if you know me, you know that I'm not here for the weenie answers. I'm here for the big, audacious goal. Because as a society, we have this effed up belief that we can really only justify asking for what we absolutely need, not for what we really want. So when my clients get that first answer out, and I go, no, no, no, no, no. We're not building a business that just lets you survive, I push them to name the real answer. What do they actually want? And usually it's not a massive goal. It's $150,000, $200,000, $300,000. And when they say that bigger number, they say it almost in a hush. Like, they don't want too many people hearing that they actually have the bravery and the audacity to name that bigger number. But here's the thing about starting a business. It's actually far easier to grow a business to that $300,000 than it is to $60,000. And when I tell my new clients this, you know, sometimes they're like, okay, great, I'm on board. But mostly they're really still attached to that smaller number because that's what feels safe. That's what that doesn' activate their nervous system in a lot of dangerous ways. And so they'll ask me, Katie, like, do you mind if we just, like, build to 60,000 and then grow it to 300,000? But here's the problem with that. A business that's designed with a $60,000 goal in mind is usually completely unscalable to get to that 300,000 without completely burning you out. So I would rather you work towards your $300,000 goal, not hit it in year one or year two, but still make 60,000, a hundred thousand, 150. Work your way up to it. And that's what I hope my clients do. And hi, I help ADHD business owners make more money in less time with fewer distractions. I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and money mindset coach and host of the weeniecast podcast. So if you're being a weenie about your money, cut it out because you deserve more.
