It's OK to be tired and need a break

Katie McManus argues that adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep and that rest matters for life itself, not just work. Brown bats sleep 20 hours a day. Your body isn't lazy for needing a break.
SA hello and good evening. I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and leadership coach. Happy October, everyone. If you missed it, I went live every single day in September. We're not going to do that again this month. I've already. I've already missed the boat since today is already the third, but I am going to be coming live pretty often, giving you some messages in and. And different tips and tricks. Just be a good person and be a good entrepreneur. This month. Wanted to start this month off with a little reminder, and I apologize. Luna has been cooped up for the last couple days, and I'm trying to get her to play with something so she's not being a terrorist. But it is a little noisy in the background, so just. Sorry about that. Anyway, I wanted to talk about rest. Okay. Because I've been hearing from a lot of people, there's a shift in the weather. There's a lot of things going on in the world, and it's very human to feel tired when all that stuff is happening. So when you're tired, your job is to sleep. That is that. One of the best things that I did for myself in my business is when I was tired during my day. I made it my job to. To find a window to take a nap. That is what we have to do, especially if you're doing work that involves energy and strategic thinking and supporting others. Okay. We cannot take on other people's energetic baggage when we're too tired to have our defenses up. Otherwise, we absorb everything and it gets super, super heavy on us and we can't handle it. And I wanted to just give you some fun facts about sleep. So humans. Humans should be sleeping. Human adults, I want you to listen to me here. You should be sleeping between seven to nine hours a night. If you're pulling that whole I'll sleep when I'm dead thing. Or I can make it. I can make it on five hours a night. You are kidding yourself. And you're actually harming your body. Oh, my God. This toy is way noisier than I thought it would be. So you're actually harming your body. So I wanted to go through a couple other animals and how much they sleep. So the. The animal that gets the most sleep. This is my favorite animal in the world, by the way. The brown bat. The brown bat gets about 20 hours of sleep per day hanging upside down in their cave somewhere. How amazing is that? I would be a complete nutcase if I got 20 hours of sleep a day. The lion, the king of the Jungle of The jungle gets 19 hours per day. The giant armadillo. I'm not even sure what a giant armadillo looks like. I've only seen, like. I imagine it's just like a really, really big armadillo. I don't know how big we're talking, but it gets 18 hours of sleep per day. The North American opossum. Like, this list is kind of weird. The North American opossum. Possum. Every time I see it written, I want to say that, oh, possum gets 18 hours of sleep a day. And I imagine they're sleeping during the day because they're nocturnal. The tiger gets 18 hours per day. House cats get 14 hours a day. And dogs get 13 hours per day. Okay, humans, we need seven to nine. Compared to those guys, we're doing great. We have a lot more waking hours to work with. And I wanted. I want to also just address that the elephant in the room that can happen or that a lot of people have going on for them is that you think that you just need to rest and recharge so you can be better at work. And I'm guilty of this, too. I say this like it's everyone else. This is me, too. Okay? We have this belief. It's like, okay, cool, I'm going to work, and I'm going to work, and I'm going to work. And then when I'm tired, I'm going to get enough rest so I can be better at work. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Rest and recharge so you can better appreciate life. Rest and recharge so that you can have a better life, so that you can really appreciate and enjoy things. Luna. We are not human. That is not our title. How we're listed in Darwin's registry. Okay. We are human beings. Human beings who sometimes have really obnoxious pets who make a lot of noise during a live. Talking about you, missy. We are not just a little tour of my apartment. We are not human doings. We are human beings. And it's okay to just be. Sometimes it's okay to take a rest and recharge and just be human. She really is in favor of it. She really enjoys a better life. She doesn't like me working. Earlier, she was sitting on the couch with me and trying to, like, whack my computer out of my lap. I literally have to find ways to distract her when I'm trying to work in the evenings because she fully believes my attention should be on her. And she keeps shoving this Damn toy in corners where she can't get it. Oh, my God, Luna. So I don't know if anyone has one of these things. So they have a hole and you fill them with like, kibble or treats. And the dog, like, whacks them around. Here, I'm going to show you. And she whacks them around to try to get the food out. And, you know, it's a great idea. It's supposed to get her intellectually stimulated. But it mostly gets me a lot of exercise getting up to get it out from under furniture. But yes, Lee, absolutely. But yeah, everyone go and get some rest. It's okay. You don't have to be 100%, 100% of the time. Okay? That is not how this works. Okay? Our ancestors would literally, like, do all the work in the spring, and then they would tend things as it grew during the summer, and then they would harvest. And then when fall came, when it got cold, when it got wet, when it got snowy and icy, they would rest. You know, they would maybe repair things as needed, but they would really rest. Okay. We. It's. It's actually probable that our genes, like whatever's been passed down to us has some of that ingrained in it. Okay. Trees hibernate. Okay. They lose all of their leaves. Okay. They don't try to actively work through winter. Okay. Bears hibernate. I don't know what squirrels do. They seem to be around all year round. Luna likes to bark at them. But here's the thing. You don't have to be 100% all the time. You don't have to go into hibernation either. You can be gentle with yourself. As seasons shift, as hurricanes happen, as scary happens in the world, you have full permission to check in with yourself and your energy levels and say, you know what? I think I need a little me time. I think I need to just go and be alone for a little bit. I need to sleep and recharge and that's going to be that. Okay? This chaotic live is going to be coming to a close because I can tell she's out of her treats and that thing from the little rattly sounds. So I'm gonna go before she makes more noise. Thank you for joining Lee and whoever else was watching in. Happy October, everyone. Let's all take a nap. All right? Anyway, I'll be going live later this week. Keep an eye out. I'm going to be going. If you have any topics you want me to go live on, please DM them to me. So be happy to put something custom together. Otherwise, have an amazing night. Okay, Bye, everyone.
