Kicking and Screaming

Katie McManus (business strategist and money-mindset coach) delivers an informal live-stream about starting and scaling a service business. Main advice: choose a niche you know intimately, offer services you can perform effortlessly ("in your sleep"), and pick work you still have "mojo" for even when not feeling 100%. The stream mixes practical tips (market research for ideal clients, setting boundaries) with candid, humorous moments (she catches/kills a moth on camera) and a call-to-action to join her free monthly "Brave Biz Lab" group coaching call.
I can taste yo, yo, yo I can taste yo, yo, yo I can taste y. Hello and good evening. I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and money mindset coach. And I want to be honest, I cut this pretty close if you haven't been following. I am going live every single day for 30 days with my dear friend and client, Lauren Lockowitz. It's a bit of a challenge, and there are consequences if you don't go live. So my consequence is that I have to sing a song she picks for me, and I have to record it and I have to share it on the interwebs. I'm not a good singer. I don't enjoy singing. I don't think anyone would enjoy seeing these things. So this is a big, big motivator for me to go live every day. And I'll be honest, like, I almost missed today. Today's just gotten away from me a little bit. Lauren's consequence if she misses going live is I get to tell her exactly what facial expression she gets to do an angle that she gets to take a very unflattering photo of herself. Neither one of us wants these. So good on us. We've both continued today's day eight of our challenge. Today I want to talk about just a really quick little message for those of you who want to start a business and just little housekeeping. We are going live to the Facebooks, to LinkedIn, and to YouTube. And hello, I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and money mindset coach. So I talked to a lot of folks who are already in the midst of starting their business, who are already have, like, a very fairly successful business, and they want to scale it, and that's why they end up working with me. There are a lot of folks that come through who come to my brave biz lab call that I actually do every fourth Friday of the month. It is a free group coaching call. If you want to come, the link is in my bio. Just go ahead and and join us. Okay. It's such a great call, but I get a lot of folks who are still kind of in the idea phase of starting their business. And here's where I see people get stuck is number one, they want it to be impressive. They want it to be something that they see as having status. And while I'm all for that, it's not always the thing that's going to be the easy money maker for you. Okay. Case in point. If you have never been an executive, it's going to be very Hard for you to do, like, really high level executive coaching, right? Because really, if, like, if you're picking a niche, people are going to want you to have a niche that is somewhat relevant to them. Right? And I also see people just doing stuff that, like, they think has a market. So here's where I want you to really start, is I want you to pick the thing that you could do in your sleep. Oh, no, there's a moth. Oh, God, it's gonna eat all of my cashmere. Damn it. Anyway, I want you to pick the thing that you could do in your sleep, okay? And I'm not saying that, like, commit yourself to being bored by doing the same thing that you could do in your sleep all the time. Like, trust me, you're gonna do so much stuff, stuff that's outside your comfort zone that you've never done before, that you're gonna have to be, like, creative and, you know, really figure out your way you're not going to get bored, okay? I promise you. Where did the moth go? God, I feel like a cat. Hold on. I think I can get it. I think I can get it. Hold on. Really? Oh, I got it. Yes. Did you guys see that? I don't think anyone's watching right now. It's late on Saturday. I just killed the moth online. Oh, welcome to my life. That's just ADHD land. I wonder if there's another one that I can kill on live video. Don't mind me. I'm just laughing at myself. You're gonna have plenty of stuff to keep you entertained. Like moths in your office when you're doing a late night live. Don't worry about that. What you. What you want to make sure happens is that, like, even when you're not feeling it, even when you're tired, that you can do this without exerting too much effort. Okay? If you're having to exert too much effort to do the work that you're getting paid for, it's not gonna work out. It's just not going to work out. I can promise you that. Okay? So pick the thing that is that you can basically do in your sleep. You also want to do a service that you are so expert at that you could do it inebriated. Okay. You could do it like when you've had a little puff, puff of the magic dragon when you've had a couple glasses of wine. I'm not advocating for you being under the influence while you do your work. No. But I am saying that you should know it well enough that when your brain is a little foggy, you can still kill it. You can still be the expert in the room. All right? Oh, gosh, who just commented? Let me see, 10. Where did you see the moth? Did you see me get them off? I'd be dying laughing about that bit Anyway, you know, the reason why we want to be the expert is because, like, it's so vulnerable putting yourself out there as a business owner. It's so scary to like, have to say, hey, everyone, you know, here's who I do, here's who I help, and by the way, like, I'm so good at it that I charge this amount of money, all right? And then to charge for it if you want to end up sabotaging yourself. You saw me hit it. Yes, I had, I had a witness. I'm so proud. Thank you for being here, 10 weir. But no, you want to be so expert at it that, like, you are unshakable in knowing that you're good at this, okay? Because there are going to be so many moments where you're starting this business that you start doubting yourself. Okay? That's natural. The only people who don't go through that are sociopaths. So congratulations. If you're experiencing that, that like, debilitating level of self doubt, you're not a sociopath. This is proof. You know, the other thing that I want you to be really, really clear on is what your niche is. I want you to know them so, so well and just know that you don't have to know them that well when you first start. When I work with clients, I have them go through this really intensive kind of prescriptive market research process. And this process, like literally gets them so in tune with what their ideal clients need, want, what they're afraid of, what they're frustrated with, what they've tried already, so on and so forth. When you know that stuff, it makes your life so much easier. It makes marketing easier, makes selling easier, and it just makes, like, feeling confident in what you're doing a whole lot easier. And lastly, like, pick a business that you will have mojo to do the service of even when you're not feeling great. Because let's be real, like we're humans in human meat suits, okay? And we're not going to feel 100% every single day that we're doing this. And we are going to have clients who call us on our days off or when we're, you know, wanting to be a little more checked out of our business. And sometimes that will be like an Actual emergency that we have to see to. And if you get resentful of having to do that, it's not going to work well. Okay. It's just. It's not going to work well. You can absolutely have healthy boundaries. And also just picking. Picking a service that you have some mojo around that you enjoy doing even when you're not feeling 100% is going to be a complete game changer. Okay. If you don't do these things, if you. If you try to go for something that, like, a little bit out of your expertise, you're not really sure of the niche and you know, you know a lot, but you don't really feel like you know all the things. You're gonna get in your way. I've seen it time and time again. You're going to get in your way. You're going to sabotage yourself. And people who sabotage themselves don't have super successful businesses, Right. Because they're busy sabotaging themselves. They're not busy on, you know, reaching success. And they're probably also not killing moths in their closet or. I'm sorry, in their. In their office. Where am I? I'm looking at my closets over here. Anyway, I'm exhausted. If you can't tell the 10 weird. Thank you so much for joining. If anyone else is. Is here, welcome. We're just wrapping up for tonight, but you do want to rewind because I did kill them off in the beginning. I caught it on video. So anyway, anyway, I did it. Here is my eighth live out of 30. For my challenge, I do not have to sing today. I do not have to record myself singing, and I do not have to share a video of me singing on the interwebs. Anyway, I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and money mindset coach and fierce moth killer. I hope you have an amazing Saturday night, and I will be live with you again tomorrow. All right, bye.
