Most Common Fears

Katie McManus (business strategist & leadership coach) delivers an informal livestream titled “Most Common Fears,” describing the top fears her prospective and current clients experience when starting or scaling a business and offering practical reframes and quick fixes. Main fears covered: fear of the unknown/perfectionism, fear of seeming salesy, fear of saying the wrong thing (public mistakes), fear of doing work with no results (bad-fit courses/manuals), fear about timeline/how long it will take, fear of having to go back to paid employment, and fear of not having enough clients. Tips include: accept unknowns and iterate, adopt a values-based/holistic sales approach, own and clean up public mistakes, prioritize work that produces measurable results and build a custom strategy, allow flexible timelines (keep a job if needed), and mitigate low client volume by raising rates and simplifying math to fewer higher-paying clients. Ends with CTA to DM or book a “generate income strategy” call.

Hello, I'm Katie McManus. This is business strategist, leadership coach with slightly shorter hair today. Good evening. Happy Saturday, my humans. I hope you're having an amazing weekend. On my phone. It's just letting me know that I'm going live. How fun is that? Anyway, good evening. This is day 24 of me going live every single day. Today has been a jam packed day. I literally dropped my dog off at doggy take care of and went to New York for the day and I went fabric shopping and I saw friends for lunch and I got my haircut, obviously, and I made it back in one piece. Not quite one piece. My tailbone. I'm so glad I brought my. My donut cushion because the you've been tuned in this month. You'll remember I fell down the stairs about three weeks ago and apparently tailbone sprains take about longer than three weeks to heal. Today I wanted to go live and just talk about the most common fears that come up for my clients before they start working with me. And as they're working with me, okay? Fears do not go away once you start getting success. They start growing. All right? New level, new devil and all that jazz. So I want to talk about the fears that people typically have that hold them back from even starting or getting bigger. Because I want you to know if you're having any of these fears that you're not alone. Okay. I'm going to be talking through what some of these fears actually mean is going on for you because I'm a pro and I know typically what's happening. Also, if I have a couple quick tips, I'm going to give you some quick tips as to how to get around it. Okay? So number one, one of the most common fears is they're afraid of the unknown. They're afraid of, like, what is my life even going to look like when I run a business? What? Like, I just don't know what I don't know. And here, here's where I find this is most common is with my clients who have are major perfectionists, right? Because they're used to being good at fucking everything. Okay? They're good at everything. They have mastered being perfect at so many things. And when they don't know what the tasks are going to be when they venture into starting a business, it's really hard for them to think, oh, yeah, I can guarantee I'm going to be good at those things. They can't. So being afraid of the unknown, of running a business, by the way, I'm still In the unknown portion of my business. I don't think I'm going to stop being the unknown portion of my business until I stop growing. And okay, that is. That's just the nature of the beast here. Don't want to be cheesy or salesy. I'm going to take a sip on that one. Yeah. We have this major fear about seeming pushy or salesy or too into ourselves. You know, it's. Our society has a really like, nasty way of weaponizing narcissism. Narcissistic personality disorder is a personality disorder on par with sociopathy, meaning being a sociopath, okay? Sociopaths and narcissists are not actually concerned with the fact that they're sociopaths and narcissists, okay? They don't care. They genuinely do not give a flying that they are a sociopath, a psychopath or a narcissist, okay? Because they don't care about other people. They don't have any ability to have empathy, okay? The only thing they can care about is themselves. They're not concerned with coming across the sales here cheesy, okay? So congratulations. If you're, you know, worried or afraid of coming across as. As cheesy or salesy or too into yourself and being a little narcissistic in your. In your marketing and sales, you're not a narcissist. I can guarantee you you're not a narcissist, okay? You. This is what I have to remind a lot of my clients is when they start selling their services, they're worried that they will accidentally pressure someone into buying who cannot afford their services. Now the. I want you to think back to a situation where you are with the salesperson and they were very obviously only after the money in your pocket. They did not care about you at all as a human, okay? Every single tactic that they used was intentional to get their goals, getting your money, okay? If they had been a different human, if they had been a human who cared about you as another human and wanted to support and guide and be the best resource to you possible, their actions would have been precisely in aim of that goal, okay? You are a human who cares about other humans, okay? I just got a heart for that one. You're a human who cares about other humans. I guarantee you, guarantee you in your sales process, that is what is going to come out, okay? That is what is going to come out. There's no way you can come across as pushy. There's no way you're going to come across as only after Someone's money, okay? Because it's not who you are. Okay? So take a deep breath and just let that fear go. Also, just going to plug my program here. If you're. If you're worried about seeming salesy, it's usually because you don't know how to run, like, a good sales call, okay? So my holistic selling program, which is coming soon, is a great training place for this because I teach that holistic way of selling. Holistic, meaning you're serving the relationship, this person, okay? Not just trying to get someone's money. All right? So, okay, so that's number two. Okay? And I'm literally going off of my sheet of, like, all my market research notes. These are the most common things. This sheet has seen some rough days. It has coffee stains. I don't even know. I started highlighting at one point, and then I realized, why am I highlighting a list of highlights? This is how. This is how organized I am. Oh, number three, saying the wrong thing. Yeah, this is a big one. Because when you're growing your business, when you're talking to more people, when you're going live, when you're speaking on stages, basically when you're putting yourself out there in a way that cannot be edited all the time, it's guaranteed you're going to say the wrong thing. You are going to put your foot in your mouth. It's going to happen, okay? There's no use in even being afraid of it happening because it's going to happen, okay? A better fear than this is that, like, you're gonna pee your pants, okay? Because less likely to happen. It's far less likely to happen, okay? And you can always put on some depends. It's fine if it's likely to happen for you. No worries. You can protect yourself. So being afraid of saying the wrong thing is kind of like being afraid of the dark. Like, there's gonna be moments where it's dark, okay? So what you have to figure out is, like, how are you going to help yourself through it when you do say the wrong thing? Okay? You have to find your night lights. You have to find, like, the glow in the dark stars that you put on the ceiling that light up your room. All right? So, I mean, I say the wrong thing all the time. And one of the ways that I deal with it is I pause for a second. I say, oh, my God. Something came out of my mouth that I am not comfortable with, and that's not what I meant. And it. Or it was a word, weird wording of something. Excuse Me, I just have to clean this up in the moment, okay? That's how you deal with it. If you ever say the wrong thing to an individual, you and it gets weird between you, you get to say, oh my God, like I just said this thing and I need to clean, clean up this mess that I just made by saying that thing, okay? You're a human, okay? Humans up all the time, okay? Like we don't open a history book at some point. It's all just fuck ups over and over and over again, okay? The people who are remembered for their fuck ups though are the ones that made huge impact on the world, okay? They said the wrong thing all the time, but they also had huge impact in the world. Now, whether that's for good or evil, that's up to you. I hope it's for good, but for you, like, you just, you get to own that you said the wrong thing, you get to apologize, get to clean it up and hopefully you're in relationships with people who understand that you are human and that mistakes are going to happen. One of the best things that I learned in my business is that when I screen screw up, when I screw up and it's kind of public and it's kind of in front of a bunch of people and I own it, my clients actually feel a little braver to go out and be themselves and potentially say the wrong thing because they saw model that it was okay, that it could, like something could go wrong and then you can make it right, okay? So go forth and say the wrong thing. Say, say the wrong thing because you know what you're probably going to say 98% of the right thing that people need to hear and they're not hearing it now because you're worried about that 2%. Okay? Okay. So. Oh, people are afraid of doing all this work for no results, okay? So this usually comes from this fear of doing all this work for no results. It comes. I'm speaking to you course buyers that I am one of you, okay? It comes from buying online courses that are not a fit for you or buying business books that aren't a fit for you by buying instruction manuals that are not a fit for you and doing some of the work and not getting anywhere with it, getting frustrated and thinking this isn't leading anywhere. What am I doing? Okay? It's essentially you have broken trust with yourself, okay? Now you're gonna not get paid for a lot of the work when you start your business. That's just a matter of fact, okay? No one, no One is paying you to start this business, okay? Your clients will pay you for your work. When you get to the point of having clients, this is where having a custom strategy, custom strategy that takes your personality type, your style of working, your timeline, like how much time you have available in your week, okay? Because if you signed up for an online course that's told you you need to block off 30 hours a week, that's just not going to happen, okay? If you're working a 60 hour job, you need a custom strategy that will support you in, in all your glory and all your wackadoodle ness in getting to your unique goals, okay? And you need to stop doing work that isn't delivering results, okay? We are so used to like this bureaucratic bullshit of like, I have to do all this homework and studying and preparing before I go and do the thing. Starting your business, there should be very little homework, okay? Your homework should be stuff like doing market research, interviews, which by the way, this is, that's what I got this from. Which actually builds your client list. Because a lot of those people who are your ideal clients, you're asking them questions, they're then saying, wait a minute, like you offer a program that helps me with all these problems. I would like that, right? The work that you do should get results. If you're not getting results from your work, you're not doing the right work. You need a custom strategy. You need to call me, okay? You need to get on the phone. Well, you don't have my phone number. You need to DM me and we will create a custom strategy for you, okay? Because that's not okay. That's not okay. That's not anything I want to be happening for you because it's so demoralizing, so demoralizing. It's exhausting. And it makes you think that there's just something wrong with you. And I can tell you, I don't even have to know you. I know there's nothing wrong with you, okay? You're just doing the wrong work. You need to be doing work that gets results. And that's what I help my clients do, okay? So that is fear number four. Oh, fear number five. I had, I had this big time. I had this big time. They're afraid of how long it will take. Yeah, I was afraid of that one too. So being afraid of how long it will take is a weird one because like you're basically telling the universe, I really want this. I'm gonna pour all I have into this, but you owe me X amount of dollars by this date, or else I'm not continuing this. I want you to think about how in relationships sometimes women do this to men. You know, they go to their, their boyfriend and they say, okay, I'm ready for marriage. I'm ready for marriage. And you have until this date to propose or I'm gone. Okay, that doesn't always work out, actually. Often it doesn't work out. Okay? The universe, like non committal men, are on their own timeline. Oh, you okay, Luna? Okay, Luna just kind of coughed up something. That was lovely. Okay, so the universe is on its own timeline. We cannot demand that the universe be on our timeline. It's never going to work out that way. What we can do is we can set goals and mana and intentions and we can invite that money in. We can do all the goddamn work to make it happen. Okay? But it's not a guarantee. And if you're playing like, here's the timeline of how much money I'm gonna make by when, that's a real tough one to play. I actually, I tried doing that in the beginning of my business and I still have those little like charts of money coming in floating around here. My business didn't grow anywhere near what that looked like. Okay. Just didn't. It actually grew better. And so it's actually funny. When you set timelines like that on the universe for delivering certain, certain amounts of money, what you're actually doing is you're, you're limiting what the universe can deliver to you because you're closing yourself off to all these other opportunities. I'm going to do a couple more. Okay. I'm afraid that I'll have to go back to work. Okay, so here's. So you're. If you're afraid of going back to work. Hold on one second. I should have chugged some water or something before I started this. So if you're afraid of going back to work, there are a few things that are happening here. Either you hated your job and you left too soon, and now you're starting this business, you're like really needing it to, to generate some money because you left this job that was like floating you and your family, or you've made it mean something about you that you have to make this succeed because you can't be doing this and have a full time job now. One of the things I tell my clients, and really anyone who comes to my brave biz labs is, you know, I don't believe in plan B's. I don't believe in plan B'S. Okay. I believe in a plan A that supports you in every way that you need to be supported right now. Okay? Many people need to have a full or part time job while they're starting their business, okay? I don't care if it's waiting tables, if it's doing some marketing consulting, if it's being an accountant part time, if it's doing anything that you used to do in your old career, if it's. If it's still having your old career and starting this job on the side, okay? If that's what you need to be mentally in the game of your business and not have this whole like, well, if it doesn't succeed by this point, then I'm out. That is okay. There's nothing shameful about that. All right? Okay. They do not need to have a plan B. It doesn't mean anything about you if you have a job waiting tables while you're building your consulting business. It doesn't mean a damn thing. My favorite. One of my favorite examples of this is Elizabeth Gilbert. She wrote the worldwide bestseller Eat, Pray Love. She wrote this book, Big Magic after that where she explained that, really, I mean, she was a waitress in addition to being a writer, I think, until her second or third bestseller. And she did that because she never wanted to put too much pressure on her creativity to have to deliver an income. Okay? If she can do it, we can do it. Look at her. I mean, Julia Roberts played her for sake, you know, like, that's fine. Okay? So if you have to go back to work, that's. That's okay. No one's over here keeping track of, like, how many steps forward and how many steps back you've taken. No one cares, okay? The only people who matter should only give a. That you're happy you're doing work that lights you up, including you, by the way. That's the only metric for success that you should be caring about. Okay? And that's one of the few times I will show you at you. Okay, I'll do one more. Let me see that. They won't have enough clients. So, okay, so this is a fear that, like, happens right when you start off, you know, you're not going to get all your clients all at once. That's not how it goes usually, right? You're gonna get your clients one at a time, and there's gonna be a chunk of time in the beginning where you're not gonna have enough clients. Right? We mitigate this honestly by charging more money. That's it. If being at full time is 10 clients for you, and you want to be making $10,000 a month. Right. Then I'm going to try to figure out the math on this. Okay, so. And it takes a while for you to get clients. Maybe you work B2B or, you know, it's just a long sales cycle. Yeah. You can absolutely say, okay, cool, I need 10 clients at $1000 a month and build up towards that. Now say it takes 10 months for you to get those 10 clients. Wouldn't it be easier if you charged $2,000 a month per. Per client? And that way, even if you only got three in the first six months, you'd still be at $6,000. Okay. And think of the amount of marketing that you could be doing and the other things that you could be doing in addition to this to be bringing money in. Okay. If you're worried that you're not going to have enough clients to survive, then the key is actually raise your rates and charge more money. Luna is having a little drama right now, so I'm gonna honestly just leave it there. Thank you so much for tuning in for this. Now, if I spoke to any of the fears that are going on for you in your business and you're wanting some help to move through this, then what I want you to do is shoot me a dm. I'm gonna send you a link to book a generate income strategy. Call with me, and we're going to assess what's going on in your business right now. Map out a course for success going forward, and any questions you have, you can ask me in the DMS or we can talk in that call. Anyway, happy Saturday. Saturday, everyone. Thank you. For those of you who joined, I hope this is helpful, and I will be seeing you in my live tomorrow. Okay, have a Good night. Okay, Ms. Luna.
