My heart hurts after the news came out about Neil Gaiman

A short, emotional first-person monologue (YouTube video) by Katie McManus reacting to news about allegations against Neil Gaiman. The speaker describes profound grief at learning a admired creator allegedly harmed women, mourns the loss of joy when engaging with his work and characters (e.g., Good Omens, Aziraphale and Crowley), expresses solidarity with survivors, and laments cultural failures that force victims to come forward.

I can't even read the full article of what Neil Gaiman did. I've been a Neil Gaiman fan for years. For years and years and years and years. One of my favorite shows, comfort shows, ironically, is Good Omens. I've probably rewatched it dozens, if not over a hundred times. And I'm holding out for the statement that Michael Sheen and David Tennant, I know will be making on this. But I am struck by how hard it hits to learn that someone that I've looked up to for so long could be this vile and this harmful to women. And I am so sorry for the women who had to come out about this, that this ever happened to them. And it's silly. It's silly to cry about books and about movies and shows that mean a lot to you. But when I read a book, when I watch a show, and I just. I connect so deeply with the characters, it feels like they're my friends. Like I care deeply about these characters. And to learn that the person behind them was capable, Was capable of these kinds of actions is just heartbreaking. It's heartbreaking. And that's the heartbreak I'm experiencing as a reader, as a watcher, for the women who went through it. Oh, God, I can't even imagine, God, what it must be like to have lived through that kind of abuse. And again, I couldn't even read the full article. I don't even know all the things. But I read enough. I read absolutely enough. There has to be a word for the grief that one experiences when they're mourning literary characters, when they're mourning art form that they can no longer experience with joy because the person behind it behaved heinously vilely, who violated people and damaged lives. I don't have a word for it. If you have a vocabulary word for me, I would love to hear it. But for everyone who has experienced sa, I just. Who hears news like this of another man doing another set of just awful, vile things to women and who feel triggered and fearful that the men that we may have perceived as safe are no longer safe. I just want you to know you're not alone. For everyone grieving the characters that you care deeply about. I mean, it's so funny. I mean, it's not even funny. It's so weird that I'm here crying about Aziraphale and Crowley, But how do you separate them from the person who created them, who's done these terrible things? I'm sick and tired of living in a world where I open my phone, I turn on my computer and another man has been revealed to have done these things. And I hate that the victims have to be the ones who come out. I hate that they have to put themselves in harm's way. Because, let's be real, coming out and speaking out against someone like this does put you in harm's way, but it opens you up to all kinds of criticism. It's violating in a whole new way. And, you know, one of the things that struck me this past year was the case with Gisele Pillico and how she spoke about how shame needs to change sides. And, yes, 100%, but we're not there yet. And so victims still need to put themselves through hell in order to get people like this behind bars. And it's just not fair. We should not live in a world like this. And I know we're in a. In a time where we have direct access to each other and we can see this in real time. We can learn about it. And the fact that we're just learning about it means that it's been going on the whole time. It's not that it didn't happen before. It's that no one talked about it and people didn't have the means to share about it. And I'm over it. I am so sick of living in a world where this hits me over the head every five minutes. So I don't know if I'm going to hit post with this, but if I do, and you're also grieving the characters who mean a lot to you that were created by this monster, I'm with you.
