Promoting your business every damn day works

Katie McManus argues that daily self-promotion is essential for business growth and that fear of it is mostly made up. She breaks down how different platforms work, shares her own early hesitation, and pushes you to post explicitly about what you offer and what you're good at.
Your words I can taste yo, yo, yo I can taste yo, yo, yo, yo I can taste yo, yo, yo I can taste yo, yo, yo Y I can taste y. Hello. Good evening. A little embarrassing. This is my second time starting this live. I did the whole music on Facebook, LinkedIn, on Streamyard, basically where I stream to most places except for Instagram, and I forgot to hit the go live button. So I was live on Instagram, but I had kind of just rambled about stuff. It wasn't interesting yet. So I just decided we're gonna start fresh. Hi, everyone, I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and money mindset coach and occasional mistaker on her own live streams. Anyway, oh, and also, I have to start remembering I'm the host of the Weenie Cast. So if you want to listen to a podcast that has no visuals, but it's just me talking about how to do better in your business, then you can go and listen to that@weeniecast.com. anyway, I am going live to several different places this evening. I love these to be interactive, so if you have any questions or you want to add to the conversation, please do pop stuff into the comments. A little housekeeping, though, sometimes if your privacy settings aren't, like, visible to everyone, then your comments don't always show up. So if you have a question, I will be checking in on my LinkedIn DMS if it's not showing up. But anyway, if I'm not calling you out, it's just that I'm not seeing it sometimes, you know, the technology just doesn't work with us. Anyway, I'm going live to Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Twitter and Instagram. I was trying last week to do the whole TikTok thing. Decided it's not worth it. So before we get into the content for tonight, interesting thing, like, the live format for TikTok is so different than what works on these platforms. So on these platforms, like, the live format that works is like it's a show, right? It has a start and an end. And it's like, very conversational. And people tend to, like, pop in and listen for, like a good portion or they'll watch it later. TikTok is not like that. TikTok is like you're hanging out. I will knit while I'm on there. It's fascinating. Like, the more movement you're doing with your hands, the more people hang out and interact. It's so weird and so much fun to learn this stuff tonight. I've been talking all day about the fear of Posting about your business. I work with a lot of my clients on developing their content strategy. We will come up with like a whole breakdown of their content pillars. We'll dive into, you know, like what are their personal stories that they want to showcase that really show that they're aligned to their clients. We'll figure out what platform they should be on, we'll figure out what time they should be posting, we'll figure out when they should be engaging, what hashtags to use. Like all the things, we break it all down, right? Break it all down. We design it together. Because I want them to be involved in their business, right? And but here's the thing, like sometimes we can do all of that. We can design every single post. I can edit the posts for them. That's one thing, one thing that I do for my one on one clients. But if they're too afraid to be promotional on social media, they're not going to do it. Or maybe they'll strip the post of the thing that's promotional in it. I've had clients do that before. And it's like it's there. It's the promotion. Like it's, it's meant to get you clients and you can't take the bit that's meant to get you clients out of the post. Like that is the magic. But the reason someone does this is because they're afraid, right? And there are so many reasons we have to be afraid of being promotional promoting ourselves on social media. And a lot of it comes from what we're taught early on in our lives. I wrote a whole post about that this morning. Most of the people were upset that I don't like Dunkin Donuts, but some people like really resonated with it. Justin, every entrepreneur is a marketer and a salesperson. Gotta embrace that or else the business won't grow a hundred percent. Yes. You know, it's, we're taught from early on like not to brag about ourselves, you know, not to be too big, not to take up too much space. And even when like we go into social media, I want you to notice like the thoughts that go through your mind when you see people who are just really bold in what they post. So maybe they're sharing selfies all the time. They're sharing videos like they're highlighting things that they're really excited about. What is the voice in your head saying about them? Right? Because if they're saying, oh my God, like I could never do that, that tells you you see yourself as different from this person. And what about you is different from this person? If they're allowed to do this and you could never. Like, how are you setting up the rules of the universe here? In another sense, if you're judging them, you're like, oh my God, they're so self. Promotionally. It's so gross. Promotionally? Is that a word? I don't know. I'm tired. I got up and worked out today, which makes me morally superior, but it does make me kind of brain dead. Fuck that. We need to. This is. I'm not saying this. This is Justin, I'm reading. If you're on Instagram and you can't see the other screen, that. Do we think someone like Mark Cuban was self conscious? Sure. Did he do it anyway? Yep. Did he give two squirts of piss about the people he might offend? Yes. I like the way you think, Justin. Yeah, no, it's. Well, and here's the thing. Like, we have this fear and I don't even think, like, most of us couldn't offend people if we tried. Like, we, we just have nice genes. Like, we're kind. We might say something that sounds off, you know, but misunderstanding wise. But I don't think any of us are gonna like, piss anyone off. I think most of us. Hi, the Gazelle. Welcome. Most of us are terrified that we're gonna be annoying or that people are going to see us and think like, whoa, they're full of themselves. Like, they're posting their face all the time and we hold ourselves back. And it's absolutely insane when you think about, like, your big dreams, your big goals for this business and you want to make the money and you want to serve the clients and you want to have this impact in the world, but then when it comes to doing the one thing that will make that possible, you go, oh, like, I don't know. I don't know what people will think of me. And I'm not judging this. Like, I've been there. Like, that happens for me in different stages of my business. It started. Happened for me when I first started. Like, you did not see me posting my face much, right? Because I'm just like, oh, God. Like, I don't want people thinking that I, like, think too much of myself, right? I got over that going live. You know, who am I to, like, demand people's time live in the evenings or throughout the day? Well, you know, if people want to watch, they can. If they don't want to watch, they don't have to. Like, I got over that. When I started my podcast last year, I was terrified. Like, I, you know, go live a lot, and all this stuff, the idea of recording something and, like, putting it out there so, like, people could listen whenever they wanted, that scared the crap out of me. Okay? But I share this because I want you to see that it's so normal. And also, like, if I could move past it. You can move past it. Okay? I am historically the biggest weenie you'll ever meet in your life. Okay? If I can get over the fear and just do it anyway, you can do it anyway. All right. I make the point in my description of this post that, like, you. If you want to get clients, like, you have to let people know that you're accepting clients, right? And for you to tell people that you're accepting clients, they have to know that you have a business. And for them to know that you have a business, you have to tell them that you have a business. Right? There are a lot of steps. You're not going to, like, sneakily break into their home and off, like, do whatever your services while they're asleep upstairs, okay? That's against the law. We don't break into people's homes, even if we're doing nice things for them. All right? And also, like, if they don't know that you're down there, like, how are they supposed to pay you unless you actually just steal money? You have to promote yourself. You. You have to get out there and you have to tell people, hey, I'm open. Hey, I'm open. Hey, I'm open. The beautiful thing about social media is really, no one gives a shit and no one's really paying attention. You know that feeling when you're out with friends and you've had some drinks and, like, you might have just had, like, a little too much, and you start getting self conscious. And then, like, you're sitting in the bar and you're like, what do I do with my elbows? Like, what? Like, what do. What is everyone else doing with their elbows? Like, what do you do with your elbows? And you start getting, like, really awkward and you're like, like, really overthinking. Like, do I hide my elbows? Like, what do I do? Do? I had to put them under the table. Like, you're just. You get so in your own head freaked out. That's what everyone's doing on social media. Everyone feels self conscious. Everyone is wondering what they should be doing with their elbows, okay? If everyone's freaking out about themselves, they're not thinking about you, okay? They're seeing your post and they're, you know, noticing it for a second, and then they're moving back to themselves. Okay? You know, the people who will judge you and say, oh, God, they think a lot of themselves. They're up here a lot. They're not your clients. They're not the people who are going to end up paying you money for your services, all right? You're not there for them. They can unfollow if they don't want to see your stuff. Okay? That is not on you, okay? Your. Your, like, former frenemies from high school. Their opinions about what you're up to do not matter unless they become your client. And they're your ideal client. You want more of them, okay? That's the only time that their opinion matters. You know, your parents, your loved ones, your friends, God love them like amazing humans. They care about you. And also, like, their opinions here also don't really matter. No offense, loved ones. I know you're watching. Anyway, they don't really matter because they're not your ideal clients. Also, you know, whenever. Whenever we're seeing someone that we deeply care about doing something that's brave and out there, like, our fear gremlins come piping up like, oh, my God, save them from themselves. They're doing something dangerous. They're doing something that I would never do, and it seems really risky. And so we have to tell them this is a bad idea. They should pull back. They should do this differently. I had. I had several people when I started going live. You know, when I started going live several years ago, I had multiple. Multiple family members, friends of the family tell me that I shouldn't swear, that it wasn't professional. And I get it. I totally get it. Like, if I were going for executive clients, if I were going for. For corporate contracts, yeah, absolutely not really that professional. But I'm not. I'm going after people like me who like swearing. So not swearing for, like, for shock value. Swearing for accuracy, obviously. But what was my point? Oh, but anyway. But they're fear gremlins. Their fear gremlins got activated because they heard me doing something that they wouldn't do. Right. Because they're very, very professional. And they didn't want me not getting the results that they thought I wanted because I was doing something that they saw as counter, you know, so we're not listening to them. And you're not. You're also not listening to that voice in your head that's telling you that this is risky. Okay? And I know I've been on like a death kick lately, so stick with me, all right? We're not in this to play it safe, okay? We're not in this to appease everyone, make everyone happy with us, convince everyone that we are the perfect, quiet, like, buttoned up, contained version of ourselves. Fuck that. We're not doing that. That is not how we're meant to live our lives. We are meant to live our lives fully, loudly, big, big versions of ourselves, okay? That is how we are meant to live our lives. Okay? Whatever that looks like for you, okay? For me, it looks really boring. I like reading. I like hanging out with my dog. I like cooking. I like, you know, random Harry Potter trivia. Like, all the things like this can look different for you also. But all of that is valid. Like, there's no. And my point here is that there's no part of you that you have to hide when you show up online. There are parts of you that you can keep private. You don't necessarily have to, like, barry your soul to everyone, but you don't have to hide who you are inherently as a person. Okay? That's not something that anyone's opinion on is ever going to matter because it's. It's beautiful. It's you. It's one of a kind. It's something that I want you every single day when you wake up in the mirror. Wake up in the mirror, Wake up and look in the mirror. I want you to just celebrate that there's this version of you who's here today, awake and alive and doing the things and that you get to be that person. You know, when you let fear override that instinct, override that love, override that. That awareness of the here and now, you don't actually experience life like, this is so much bigger than just your business. You don't actually experience true life. You experience, like, the muted version. You know, it's like watching television without the sound on, or like watching television with, like, black and white on instead of color. You miss out on some really incredible, vibrant things. And more so your clients miss out on it. Your clients will never get to work with you if you're not being proactive about putting yourself out there. You know, one of my mentors used to say, you know, you can't be a secret and a success at the same time. And it's so true. And yet we're really good at keeping ourselves the best kept secret. We're so good at it. We're so good at, like, being really good at what we do, but not Telling a single soul about it, right? I. I invite you, if you've made it this far in this live, I invite you to a challenge, okay? I want you to go and brag about something that you're good at. Okay? Not something. Not something like, oh, like I made a really good pie the other day. No, I want you to brag that you are the best at X, Y and Z. Okay? You are maybe the best at filing taxes. If you are, call me. No, just kidding. You are the best at negotiating terms. You are the best at coaching people through, like, big, messy divorces, right? I want you bragging about it. I want you saying that loud and proud to someone in your life. Bonus points if you post it on social media. And I want you to notice that no one's gonna freak out. No one, you know, so if someone is a troll in your comments, you can delete them. There's like a magic button that you can click and they go away. Magic. You know, people might. Your clients might come in and be like, yes, you are absolutely. Your former colleagues might come in and be like, yep, absolutely, I've worked with this person. I 100% back up this statement. But also, people may not comment at all. Like, no one may notice. And. And you're not going to die. You're not going to die if you promote yourself for just one second, right? If you follow me on LinkedIn, you'll notice that, like, my content, I've been really pushing the calls to action in a lot of my posts, and this is partially that I have a few spots in my coaching open that I want to fill up by the end of the year. But it's also, I'm doing an experiment so I can show my clients, you know, who even though they work with me, like, can still still be afraid to post and promote their businesses. I'm trying to show them, like, look at how many times I did a call to action to work with me and not a single person objected. Not a single person, like, submitted a complaint to my LinkedIn profile that I switched from doing, like, some more personal stuff into doing more business stuff. The amazing thing is, like, you know, my sales calls are through the roof, my engagements through the roof. It's incredible. It's incredible. Like, the whole nothing bad has happened. Like, the fear that something bad is going to happen when you promote yourself is just. Is just that it's made up fear. It's something that your brain is doing to you to keep you small and to keep you from doing something risky and getting kicked out of the tribe. Stop being weenie. Stop doing that. Stop. Stop following that voice. Anyway, Justin, I want to thank you for joining the Gazelle. I'm going to wrap it up from here. I will be going live again tomorrow and the day after and the day after. I'm on a 30 day sprint and I've lost track of the days. I'm going to have to go back and count. I think I have, like two more weeks, but I kind of want to keep going. So I'm not sure if there are any topics that you want me to go live on in the future this week, next week, please send me a dm. I'd love to hear your ideas. You know, always a challenge to come up with a fresh idea for basically an impromptu improved show every night. So I appreciate your help. Anyway, thank you again for joining. I hope this is useful and I hope this is the kick in the butt that you need to go and promote your business. Anyway, I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and money mindset coach Page. Thank you for being here and I will see you tomorrow. Bye.
