Should you ask everyone to be your client? No

Katie McManus explains why you shouldn't take every client who books a sales call. Some prospects don't match your services or your personality, and turning them down politely often leads to referrals once they understand your niche.
In Sales Lab today, a client asked the best question. It's this. Do you ask everyone who books a sales call with you to be your client? Here's my answer. Hi. I help ADHD business owners make more money in less time with fewer distractions. I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and money mindset coach. For context, Sales Lab is a group call that I run for all of my clients from build your own business, the group program I run to my one on one client. It's amazing because all my clients get to ask me any question they have on their sales call. So should you invite every single person who is on a sales call with you to become your client? Absolutely not. Because, I mean, you don't ask everyone you go on a first date with to marry you, right? I hope not. And that's because not everyone is going to be the right fit for you. And you're not going to be the right fit for everyone. The whole point of starting your own business is having control over who you're spending your time with so that you can have freedom, flexibility, and actually live your life and be happy. And that's not going to happen if you fill your business with people who are not the right client for you. So what do you do when you're on a sales call and this person is obviously wrong for you? How do you tell them without completely rejecting them and being a jerk about it? First of all, let's look at why they're not the right fit. Now, best case scenario, they're just not.
The right client for you.
So they have a problem that you're.
Not suited to fix or they are in a stage of whatever it is.
That you solve that just isn't right for your business. It's the easiest because you just say.
Hey, listen, I'm not right for you.
For X, Y and Z reasons. And then there's the awkward reason. Okay, it's not a personality fit, or.
You'Re getting bad vibes, whatever, okay? You just really cleanly want to say, hey, listen, I don't know if I'm going to be the best support for.
You, but here are some resources that.
I'd like to point you towards.
And then you end the call.
And let me tell you, I have actually gotten so many referrals from people who were not the right fit for.
Me because after being on the phone.
With me and understanding deeply what I help with and what I do not help with, they understood what I do and who I'd be a better fit for, okay? So I know it's awkward, but just lean into it. Trust your gut. Be honest about what you are and.
Are not willing to take into your business.
