Katie McManus, a practical business coach, argues in a short YouTube social clip that creators shouldn’t wait for a perfect background to make content. She emphasizes that imperfect, human details (messy kitchen, laundry, even a dead moth on the wall) signal authenticity and help viewers form real connections, which in turn makes them more likely to trust, follow, and hire the creator. The video’s practical call-to-action: stop over-polishing, start creating content to attract ideal clients.

A trend I'm noticing in all the scrollable videos right now is you actually don't want your background to be too perfect. Hi, I'm Katie, your practical business coach. And you follow me because you're ready to leave your corporate 9 to 5 and replace your 6 figure salary by doing work that you love, that actually helps people. But to be able to help people, you're gonna have to get clients. And for you to get clients, people are gonna have to know that you exist and who you help. And for that to happen, you're gonna have to create some content. And if you're too worried about having a messy background to create content, then they're never going to learn who you are, they're never going to be able to hire you, and you're not going to be able to help them. But here's the thing. Stop worrying about your background being perfect. Because you know what people are doing right now, they are scanning for is this AI. And if it's too perfect, they can't tell the difference between real and AI. And they just keep scrolling, rolling, because this is social media. Social meaning socializing with other human beings. What we're looking for when we're on these apps is a connection with someone, okay, who is creating content that makes me feel like they're my friend, who's creating content that I connect with, that I find helpful, that makes me like and trust them. I don't want to start building a fake relationship with someone who doesn't even exist. I only want to create a connection with people who, who are actually people. And you know how I'm scanning for that right now is having an imperfect background. And you know what? If your house is an absolute mess, I get it, okay? I'm not a tidy person, okay? There's a reason why you're seeing just this little square. You know why? Because there's a dead moth that I killed on the wall over there and I haven't wiped it off because, ew, gross. But you know, like, I don't want you to see that, right? But that, that's real. That's real. AI is not going to create something like that. Like, if I zoom in, you can even see the flip flop mark on the wall. Okay? I'm kind of judging myself right now. I'm going to clean after I do this video. But I'm saying is your background doesn't have to be perfect, okay? You don't have to have some glitz and glam home behind you. You can have a messy kitchen. You can have a pile of laundry, you can have a dead moth on the wall, okay? Those are going to be clues to your followers that you are a real person, okay? And so it's going to give validity and credit to all the things that come out of your mouth that are going to allow people to decide that they like you, to decide that they trust you, and to eventually decide that they want to hire you. So basically, what I'm saying is, stop being a weenie and start creating content to attract your ideal clients. Now, excuse me, I have to go clean dead moth off my wall.
