Signing Up & Showing Up are not the same thing...

Katie McManus is raising money for the NAACP and Planned Parenthood by offering 33 discounted coaching sessions before her birthday. She's already signed up seven people but only three have paid, using it to argue that signing up for something and actually showing up are completely different. Real commitment requires money, accountability, and alignment with what you actually value.

Hello, everyone. I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and leadership coach. It is the day before my birthday. I'm so excited and I know I made a big announcement yesterday. I wanted to give you a little update. So the thing that I announced yesterday is that for my 33rd birthday tomorrow, I'm doing a fundraiser. I'm raising money for both the NAACP and Planned Parenthood. How I'm doing this is I'm offering $99 sessions to 33 people. So so far, oh my God. Seven people have signed up. Three of those people have gone above and beyond and donated $250 to their organization of choice. And four other people have booked using the links that I've been sharing. I've already raised over $1,000 for these two organizations, which is amazing. It feels so good to be able to use my birthday as a power for good. And so thank you for those of you who signed up and thank you in advance for those of you who are going to. Yeah, this is just such a beautiful reminder that you can literally use anything to create positive impact in the world. And what I'm using these sessions to do is to help entrepreneurs really figure out what their next steps are, how to really take their business to that next level, whatever that is for them, and create an action plan in this session so that they can get there anyway. Super excited about that. That's not what I'm talking about today though. Today I want to talk about something that is a thing that shows up for me on and off throughout the year depending on what's going on in my life and what I'm seeing go on in my industry. The difference between signing up versus showing up. I'm going to describe both of these to you. Okay? Signing up is the kind of shit that I do all the time. And I especially did when I was a strugg beginning business owner and I had no idea how to even get my first paying client. I had no idea how to get this off the ground is you sign up for a lot of crap. Okay. And when I say crap, I mean I'm not judging any of this stuff to be bad. And I'm sorry for the background noise. I'm on the screened in porch at my parents house. We're having a little birthday celebration this weekend. But anyway, so when I say a lot of crap, I'm not making it bad. I'm just saying there's a lot of it. And because it's normally low commit kind of stuff, it's not stuff that you're really going to be committed to doing, to following through on what this can look like is you see a freebie saying that it's going to teach you the 10 ways to get paying clients and you sign up for that. It could be an online course about how to get to know your niche or do copywriting, how to do an online business. All these things that can actually be very expensive, but they're still low commit because they don't have any accountability or hand holding in them. And the other thing about this is when you sign up for all this stuff, it becomes crap because you get confused. You get confused because you're signed up for so many different ways of doing it that you get flummoxed and overwhelmed and it just becomes too much. You don't have a clear plan of, this is the thing I'm going to do first, and this is the thing I'm going to do second. And this is the thing I'm going to get him to do fourth. Because all these different plans have a different first step and a different second step. And what could be a really amazing resource to help you get your business off the ground becomes something that is just overwhelming and stressful to you. And I can tell you, I still still have all the printouts of all these online courses that I signed up for that never helped me. Never helped me. Like, I maybe watched the first couple lessons, but really I wasn't bought in. I signed up for it, but I didn't show up. The reason I didn't show up for it is one, there's no way for me to be seen there. Okay? Online courses, it is just a blind place for people to learn. There's no recognition. I'm a person who needs points, okay? I need someone to say, hey, you're doing great. You did that assignment really well. Or, hey, you're sorry. The dog. It's time to feed the dogs. They're coming on in. Hi. Hi. And whoever's watching, just so you know, I do love this to be interactive. If you have anything to ask or add to the conversation, please do. I am on streamyard, so sometimes the comments don't come through. So if you. If I don't shout you out, it's not that I'm ignoring you, it's just that streamyard sometimes doesn't show me everything. So signing up for stuff. The other thing about signing up for stuff, and I just want to pause here, is that we sign up for stuff because it sounds good. It sounds externally good. It sounds like it's a fix it to a problem, okay? And maybe it's a problem that we really genuinely have, but we sign up for it because it sounds good. We don't. When we show up this stuff, when we show up this stuff, it's because it makes us sound good. It makes us believe that we can actually succeed doing this thing, okay? When you sign up for stuff, you're looking for like external band aids to fix a problem. When you sign up for something and show up to it, because whoever created that thing, whoever offered that service or that program, made sure that you, that you were going to look really good throughout the process. And I find this is the biggest, biggest difference between like online learning and courses that people provide and coaching or consulting or anything that has people really show up and be with other people. Also pay attention to the things that you sign up for because you think you should be that person that signs up for that thing. Workout classes, gyms, diets, I don't know. Like, those are all the things that I sign up for because I want to be that person who really cares about that stuff. But here's the thing. My values, none of my values center around any of that stuff. My values center around community, around like having a sense of control over my time, over, paying it forward, over. What's another one of my values? Labradoodle. Labradoodle is one of my values, okay? It's just the sense of having fun and being in the moment and being mindful and of just blind, deserving of joy. When I show up for stuff, it's because they honor all of those values. And so for you, when you're looking at things that you sign up for versus things that you actually fucking show up for, I want you to pay attention to, how does it make you feel? What values does that thing you show up for actually honor? And what are the values that you think you should be signing up for? Like, those are kind of like the flibberty jibbets of your internal space. They just are things that like, oh, well, I should care about that. But, you know, whatever, I sign up for it. But if I don't go, I don't really care. The other thing to think about is when you show up, usually it's because you spent a ton of money to show up. You have invested in yourself and it would hurt to not get that investment back by having success in some kind of way, shape or form. So anyway, what made me think of this today is I was going through my bookmarks on my computer and going through all the online courses that I have bookmarked because, you know, I sign up for them, and then I just immediately forgot that I even signed up for them. And I really need to stop doing this. And what made me do this is that I also just signed up for a consultant to help me with my Instagram, and she's walking me through it, and she's amazing. And I've been so resistant to doing the work this week because I feel like I haven't done the courses that'll teach me how and. And what. What a whole little mind fuck that I've signed myself up for. You know, like, I. I've shown up for this person who's going to hold my hand through it all, and yet I'm still holding myself back with things that I've signed up for that I never showed up for. So, just so you know, if you're. If you sign up for a ton of stuff, you know, those of us who are aware of this, and this is our work to talk about it, we do this as well. You're not alone. But also, cut it out. Start showing up to stuff. Because if you keep wasting your time signing up for things and then making yourself feel bad about it because you didn't do it, that's not a fun cycle. It's not a productive cycle. That's not going to help you move forward in any way, shape, or form. It's just going to create a punishing cycle, which I know a lot of us are really good at creating for ourselves, but. Stop it. We all need to stop it. That's my birthday present for myself and all of us. Stop it. Start showing up to the things that really matter and figure out what matters and just do that. So, anyway, that's all I have today. I'm taking the weekend off. I'm going to be finishing my book tomorrow. Hopefully God is due tomorrow on my birthday. Bad idea. Never sign up for your manuscript for a book to be due on your birthday. I don't know what I was thinking. Also, if you want to book one of those sessions, There are only 25 left as of my last check, so go and do that, please. Maybe they're 26. No, 25. Can't do math. I don't know. Why do I even try? Anyway, I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and leadership coach. Thank you for joining me this evening. I hope you have a great Memorial Day weekend, and I will see you next week. Bye.
