Signs of Insanity

Katie McManus argues that doing the same thing repeatedly while expecting different results won't break a business plateau. You need incremental strategic changes, not just mindset shifts. She uses fitness and travel to show how adaptation works.

Sam, Good morning. I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and money mindset coach. Just rebalancing things here. Okay, I think we're good. Going live to you on Instagram. The right Instagram. This time last night, I went live to the wrong account. I just wasn't awake enough. Anyway, going live to Instagram, to the Facebooks, to LinkedIn, YouTube and Twitter. Welcome, everyone. Just gonna make sure I'm all set and nothing's gonna fall over because sometimes that happens when you're balancing your phone up against your computer. Hi, David. Welcome. So today I want to talk about insanity when it comes to your business, and not the good kind of insanity. Okay? We're not talking like you're insane. You're doing something way out there and like, you know, it might not work. Oh, hi, David and Stevie. Oh, my God, I love the pictures of her. She's adorable. Anyway, I'm talking about the definition of insanity that we talk about a fair amount, which is where you do the same thing over and over and over again, and you expect different results, and that it just doesn't work. So there's. I wrote this post this morning about who I work with and who I'm useful to. And one of the things that I listed on that post is that I cannot work with people who get on the phone with me and who list off everything they've been doing for the last one to five to 10 to 20 years in their business and explain that they're doing everything right, but it's just not working. But they just need to find how to make it work magically. It just doesn't work that way. To get somewhere that you've never been, you have to do things that you have never done, okay? If what you're doing right now isn't working to get you clients, if it's. If it's not working to get you clients, there's no way you're going to magically make doing the same thing over and over and over and over again start working to get you clients. It's already proven not to work, okay? It's already proven not to work. If what you're doing, it's kind of working like you got a few clients from it, not enough to be completely 100% secure that this is going to be, you know, your source of income for the rest of your life, it's not working, okay? That whatever it is that you're doing that are getting you those, like, mediocre at best, mediocre results are not going to get you incredible results. That's just it, you know? Like, I love. I love using fitness analogies here or metaphors because it's just so, so relatable. I mean, if say you say you want to get in shape and you decide to go to the gym every single day, and you decide, okay, cool, I'm gonna go on the elliptical for 30 minutes a day. And, you know, over the first few weeks, like, you start seeing some. Some impact. You start seeing, like, oh, cool, like, my jeans fit a little bit better. You know, my cardio's up. Like, this is working. Over time, it stops working because your body reaches homeostasis. Like, your body's goal is to make sure that whatever it is that you're doing on, like, regularly doesn't cost too many calories, right? So your body's going to get adapted really quickly to that workout. Okay. For you to get to the next level. Like, you can get to a certain level of fitness going on the elliptical every single day, but you're going to tap out at a certain point. Hi, Jason. Welcome. You're going to tap out. You're going to hit a plateau. You're not going to be able to go further in your fitness goals when you're just doing the same thing over and over and over again. Like, say you want. You want to get really super in shape, be on the elliptical 30 minutes a day. That's a great place to start. But it will not help you build muscle mass. It won't help you get toned all over your body. It's just. Just gonna tap out at some point. It is the same thing in your business. If what you've been doing in your business works up to a point. And then flat lines. That is not the strategy that's going to take you to your next level. You need a different strategy to take you to that next level. This is one of the things that I love working on with my clients, right? Because, I mean, my. My clients are so incredible, and I know a couple of them are watching. Hi. You know who you are. My clients are so, so incredible. They are so talented. They are so personable. They have a gift that they, like, are offering. Offering to the world, and they're so close to their business that they can't see how to get it in front of more people. Right? It's just like me. I have a very hard time doing my own strategy for my business because I'm way too close to it. Okay? It doesn't matter that I do this for my work. I'm too close to my own business to be able to see the strategy, to see what I could be doing differently. My clients are the same. Oftentimes, you know, it's not a complete overhaul of what you're doing. That's like the last thing you want to do. You don't want to throw the baby out with bath water, which. Can we talk about that saying? Like, who, who like, threw the baby out with the bathwater at one point and that became a saying like, no, no, please don't do that, especially those of you with actual babies. But we also don't want to do this in our business. We don't want to change absolutely everything in our business. We want to find the, the smallest, most incremental changes to try to improve the systems that you already have in place so that you are not having to completely rework how you work, but also so that we can see like, what actually makes the difference here. You know, what actually makes you get 10% more clients, what actually allows for you to charge 20% more, what allows for you to have 30% more time so you can go and develop other offerings or maybe start a secondary business, right? And also, like, you can't see that for yourself often, right? Because this is what you're doing. This is what you've already always done and it works to a certain point. And like, I just don't understand where I'm getting stuck. Oftentimes where someone's brain will go is, I'm broken. There's some just something wrong with me. I just can't do this. Like, maybe my money mindset sucks. And like, it's just, it's this thing, and can I just name that this is a really common thing in our society as a whole is to. When something isn't happening the way you want it to out there, we make it an internal problem. We make it. There's something wrong with me. Rather than I'm going to change my actions, right? Rather than, oh, cool, this one thing that I'm doing is not having the output I want. I'm going to change what I'm doing then and hopefully get a different output. Right. You know, part of it is also mindset. I will name that. Like, I don't, I don't want to like completely discount mindset and your belief in yourself here, but blaming your mindset for everything that's not going right is just a cheap cop out. Just a cheap cop out, right? Because. Okay, cool. Now I know there's a problem with me and I'm Fucked up and all these things. Woe is me. Okay, great. Like, let's. Let's leave this out. The sob party, the sad. The sad sack sob party to the side. You can absolutely be a glorious mess of a human and still be wildly successful. Right. You can still have no confidence in yourself and still go out and fake confidence. Right. I'm not saying fake competence, fake confidence. Okay. With an F, not with a piece confidence. You can fake the confidence to go out there and do things that you've never done to get to the places you've never been. Hi, Steven. Welcome. Earlier than normal for you in Ireland? I usually go late at night for you. So anyway, just wanted to come live today and let you know that if you are trying to get different results doing the same thing over and over and over again, you are insane. And not the fun insane. Not like the crazy fun at a party kind of insane. No, you are the definition of insane by doing the same thing over and over and over again. That gets mediocre if no results and hoping that it's going to someday, like have this magic switch and start working. Nah, no, that's not how this goes. Right? To get there, like, if I've never driven cross country before and I want to get to San Francisco and I'm afraid of flying or, I mean, if I just want to get across the country, I'm going to have to do something. I might have to fly. Done that many times. Might need to drive. Done that. Once I went through the south, it was a lot of fun. Although I can't. I have a really hard time with Southern accents sometimes, especially when you're deep in the South. I feel like whenever someone who has like a thick Southern accent is in the north where I live, they. They change their accent a little bit. They assimilate a little bit. And I can understand that. But when I'm down there and everyone's speaking Southern accent, I feel like I'm in a foreign country. It's so funny, and I apologize if I seem like an idiot when I'm down there. But driving cross country was just this wild trip. Just side note, if you haven't driven across the US do it at least once. It is. There's so many different pockets of culture across the US and you'll never know what they are until you actually go and experience them. Side note there. But I'm gonna have to do something to get across the country, right? I can't just stay here and be like, I want to be in San Francisco. I want to be in San Francisco. I want to be in San Francisco and just keep sitting here, okay? That is insane. And as insane as that is and how we all recognize that that's insane. If you're doing stuff in your business, hoping to get clients and it's not getting your results and you continue to do it over and over and over again, you're insane. And stop it. Like, this is something that you have control over with your insanity, okay? And. But it will take you recognizing that this is not working. This is not working, there's something that has to change, right? If you're hearing this and thinking, like, yeah, that's me. I'm shit. Like, I'm not getting the results I want. I'm not getting any results. Or like, oh, like I'm really getting frustrated in my business because what I'm doing just isn't getting me where I want to go. I want you to shoot me a dm. And when you shoot me that dm, just say, hey, I saw your live. I think I want to talk to you. Okay, I will send you a link to book a call. This will be no pressure. We will talk about where you are and where you want to go and what you've been doing, where you're getting stuck. If it's a good fit for both of us, we will talk about different options to work together, but only if it's a good fit for both of us. Because here's what I don't want for you. I don't want you spending another day on a strategy that doesn't get you what you want. Because you deserve what you want. You are worthy of what you want. What you want is out there. All you have to do is take the correct action to go and get it. And I want you to have it. I want you to have it. I don't. I don't think there's any barrier to you having it besides you just going and getting it. So let's. Let's figure out a way for you to go and get it. Okay? Deal. Anyway, I have a training that I have to prep for and I have to grab lunch really quick, so I am going to finish my live right here. Thank you so much for joining David and Steven and Jason across all platforms. And if anyone came through and I didn't see you or you commented and I didn't call you out, just that the technology didn't work for some reason. You know, technology is great when it works and not so great when it doesn't. Anyway, I hope you found this super helpful. I hope this is the kick in the pants for you to go and do something different to get yourself better results. And again, if you're too close to it, if you can't see the forest for the trees, if you don't understand how you could shift to do something different, I want you to shoot me a dm and we're going to talk, and we're going to figure this out together. Okay? All right. I love you all so much. I hope you have an amazing day. And today's Thursday. Oh, my God. The week is almost over. I will be going live tomorrow, and if you have any topics that you'd like me to go live on, please tell me. I'm. I'm always excited to crowdsource ideas. Anyway, love you all so much. Have an amazing day and go do brilliantly in your businesses. Bye.
