Sam. Hello and happy Tuesday, everyone. I'm Katie McManus, business strategist, Money mindset coach. Going to you live on the Instagram, which I have on my phone here. If you can't see on my computer, I can kind of see the outline and to the Facebooks, to LinkedIn, to YouTube, and to Twitter. Welcome, welcome. In today, I'm talking about a topic that is near and dear to my heart because I went through this numerous times, having to go through all the mindset shifts that are required if you actually want to have a successful business. They're also what I guide so many of my clients through, both one on one when I work with them, just, you know, doing business coaching and strategy and in my groups. Okay. If you're going through any of these, like, mental blockages, if you're freaking out about any of these things, I want you to stop. I want you to pop your name in the comments, say hello, ask me your questions, because these are the five most detrimental mindset blocks if you don't work through them. Okay? So we're going to be talking about the block themselves, and then we're going to be talking about the shift and the amazing outcome that happens when you do commit to the shift. All right? So. And welcome. Let me see here. Okay, so number one, so the five mindset shifts that you need to succeed in your business, and number one is you need to stop being a fucking weenie. Just to say it bluntly. And when I say stop being a weenie, I'm not saying become like a sociopath and don't be afraid of anything. Okay? Hi, David. Welcome. I'm not saying that at all. I'm saying that if you want to have a successful business, you're going to have to stop being a weenie about it. You're going to have to do things afraid, okay? There's no moving past fear. So I want you to think back, and I hope everyone who's watching has ridden a bike before, because, you know, this. This metaphor only works if you really know how to ride a bike. But related to anything that you have to learn by doing. Back when you were a kid and you were learning how to ride a bike, you know, your parents could have sat you down or your adults in your life could have sat you down and drawn diagrams and, like, you know, read you books on how to. How to balance and, like, how to pedal and how to, like, do the brakes, whether it's the pedal break or the hand brakes, how to turn, how you're supposed to, like, Lean into the turn, would you? After getting, I don't know, like a whole week's worth of explanations and trainings from books and diagrams and being shown, would you feel comfortable getting on a bike and riding around? And I asked that. You can't answer because it's alive. Hahaha. But I asked that knowing that, no, you fucking wouldn't. You be like, this is terrifying. What if I fall? I'm going to fall. I'm going to. I'm going to sprain my knee, I'm going to sprain my hands. You know, like when you go over the handlebars and you catch yourself like, oh, that road rash that you get. Oh, hate that part of riding bikes. It's terrifying. It's terrifying the first few times you get on the bike. You know, you're like kind of cooking your feet and just kind of like coasting. It's terrifying the first few times you get your feet on the pedals. It's terrifying the first time you fall because you know you're going to fall. There's no, there's no learning to ride a bike and not falling. It's terrifying until you've done it a couple dozen times, right? And then you don't have to think about it. You just hop on and go, right. It's the same for parts in your business, okay? This stuff, you know, you've never done this before. It's not like they trained this shit in high school, okay? They didn't even train a lot of this in college, all right. They trained some of it in some jobs, depending on the job that you have. Hi, David. Welcome. We have two David's here. Awesome. You guys should be friends. Anyway, so it's the same in your business. So when I say stop being a weenie, I mean stop being a weenie who doesn't act. Stop being a weenie who's like, I'm afraid. And so because I'm afraid, I'm not going to do anything. Be the weenie, but be the weenie who's brave enough to go and do something outside of their comfort zone. Okay? It is the only way you are going to be able to grow this business to. To anything. If you want to make any money, you're going to have to do stuff that's outside your comfort zone and not like in a weird way. Okay? Hi, David. Okay, so you're going to stop being a weenie. That is Mindse that shift. Number one. All right. Number two. David. Hashtag be the weenie. Yes. Number two, you have to get over this fear you have about sales and coming across as sleazy and like a used car salesman. I get it. We've all had traumatizing events where we've gone to buy something and the person was so super pushy. Like, didn't. Didn't really even ask for consent in a lot of ways and just tried to barrel through us to try to convince us and manipulate us and push us and, and do all those gross things to try to make us give them our money. Okay? Ew, ew, ew, ew, ew. Gross. I want to acknowledge that for someone to be a sleazy salesperson, they have to be a sleazy person to begin with, okay? That is not something that people automatically turn into when they go to try to sell something, okay? That is an inherent trait. Okay? Just like you can be a kind person, you can be a warm person, you can be a cold person, you can also be a sleazy person. All right? So if you have a reaction to sleazy people and you're worried about being one, kind of like, it's kind of like being a psychopath. Like, psychopaths are not worried about being psychopaths. They don't care. Okay? Like, it's a problem for everyone else. It's not a problem for them. The fact that you're concerned about being sleazy and being pushy and manipulative means that you are not and means it would be incredibly difficult for you to become that. Okay? Now the other fix here is honestly just learning a relationship based method of selling. Now I train a version of this. I call it holistic selling. My sales training is very simple. It is all about building this relationship between you and this person. You know, giving value to a certain degree. But it's not a free coaching call. It's not you giving away some, like, sample of your service and, you know, attracting all the freebie chasers. It's really helping you. You both decide if this is a great fit for both of you to be doing business together. It's very collaborative. It's consent based. You don't, you don't sell without asking permission to sell. And it's simple. But there are a bunch of different sales trainings out there that are very relationship based. You have to find the one that's going to be the right fit for you. But here's the thing. You have to learn how to sell. You cannot get clients without learning how to sell. Just, it's not going to happen. There are a lot of people Online these days that are trying to convince you also that you can sell high ticket things without getting on a sales call. No, you might be able to sell to a couple people that way. But let me tell you, people want to talk. If they're spending big money with someone, I better be able to get on the phone with you and talk to you and ask you questions and be able to gauge through a conversation if you're a real person and if you actually can do what you say you do. So you have to get over that fear of selling. Now I want you to remember here that when you are talking to someone who has a problem and wants this solution, they want this outcome, they want to build a business or they want health or they want a partner, whatever, they are looking for someone to help them with this. If you can't run a sales call and invite them to be your client, guess what? They're going to go to someone else. Simple as that. They have a problem. It's a wake up in the morning problem and they need a fix. If you're not willing to fix it because you're too chicken to get on the phone, guess what? They're going to go to someone else and someone else will get their money. And someone else may not do as good a job as you would and that's a bummer for everyone. Well, except for that other person who's getting the business and not having to do a great job with it anyway. So get over it. Just start. Start asking people to be your client. It's as simple as that. Okay? It doesn't have to be any more complicated than that. All right, number three in mindset shifts that you need to make if you want to have a successful business and if I'm saying anything and you have any questions on it or you have an opinion on it, please, I invite you to pop those in the comments. Number three is charging more money doesn't make you selfish or greedy. All right? Now, so often new business owners come to me and they are so proud of themselves because they're charging like $75 an hour or a hundred dollars an hour and it's more than they have ever made in an hour. Okay? It is more. They're very proud because they went from whatever they were being paid in their corporate gig working 40 hours and or 40 hours a week. They took that hourly wage and they upped it a bit and here they are and they're still not making any money. So there are a couple of ways to look at this. So first and Foremost, I want to name that. You making enough money to live and save and retire and go on the occasional vacation does not make you evil. Hi, Bhakti. Welcome. Does not make you evil at all. Okay? Doesn't make you greedy. Doesn't make you selfish. You're not Scrooge McDuck doing his, like, backstroke through piles of gold, which, by the way, I know I've said this a lot, but can you imagine. Can you imagine the back muscle definition that Duck has just from doing all this back. The backstrokes? Yes. Hello, Bhakti. Hello. And Vladimir, Welcome. Anyway, you're not selfish for charging enough to live off of. You're not. Hands down, you are not. So here's what you need to remember, is that when you start a business, you're not going to be working 40 paid hours per week. It's just not going to happen. I'm going to knock over my water bottle, talk with my hands too much. It's just not going to happen. You need to charge enough for the hours that you are actively working with your clients. Now, this could be $500 an hour. This could be $1,000 an hour. But I want you to remember, your clients don't give a fuck what you think your hours worth. They don't care. Your hour can be worth, you know, $10,000 to them. What matters to them is how bad is their problem that they're coming to you to fix? And what is that outcome worth to them? What's it worth? You know, I mean, if you're. If you are dying of a terminal disease and there's someone out there who has a cure, how much is that worth to you? Now, hopefully you're not dealing with life or death situations there, but, like, you know, say your litigation attorney, because I know we have one listening. Say you're a litigation attorney and someone is being sued for $1 million, and if they. If they lose, they're going to lose their house, they're going to lose their retirement, they're going to lose all this stuff. Might be worth it for them to pay a couple hundred thousand dollars to be able to keep most of it, you know, or at least mitigate some of the damage so they don't have to lose all of their retirement account. All right? If you are working with companies, if you're helping them be better with their employees and communicate better, because I know we have someone who does that, watching. How much does it cost for them to lose an employee? Like, what's the attrition? How much does it cost for them to find new talent? How much does it cost their teams and productivity? You know, are they late on projects? How much does that cost? Do people have to do overtime? How much does that cost? Okay, we get to charge for the outcome that we deliver. All right? Want to acknowledge here that there's only so much any of us can do. All right? We have to also look for clients who are coachable, who will take the advice that we give and run with it. Okay? So that's a part of it. You're not responsible for everything. They also have to act. That is number three in the mindset shifts that you need to make if you want to have a successful business. Now, number four, this is a big one. This is a big one. So I actually struggled with this a lot when I first started my business, and a lot of my clients struggle with this too. And this can actually go on for a couple years. And I want to just give you full permission if you're just starting to be militant about this from go. If you're several years into your business and you're still struggling, struggling with this, take this as your permission slip to set new rules around this. All right? This is this mindset, this belief that when we're charging a lot of money for the service, that we do that any time our clients reach out, needing help, we have to hop to. Okay? No, there's also this belief that, you know, if you're. If you have clients who get to book on your calendar for, you know, say, two. Two to four sessions a month, that you then have to open up as much availability for them to make it as easy for them as possible. No. No, you don't. When I was in the first couple years of my business, this is what I did. Basically, my clients could book with me anytime. Monday through Friday, like 9am to 8pm, right? Which is fine. Like, I. I don't have, like, a strictly speaking workday. Like, I work a little bit in the morning, I take some time off, I go make lunch, I walk my dog, I do all this stuff, come back, do some more work, and, you know, and I kind of float in and out. I get everything done that I need to do more. So it was fine for me, except it wasn't fine for me. Okay. Because what would happen, because I have adhd is I would get kicked into waiting mode, right? So it would be. Say it was a Tuesday, and I'd have a client at 10, and then my next client was at 1. So I wrap up my first client around 11am of two hours. And I'd really, really try to be productive. I try to get into stuff, but, like, in the back of my head, you're like, don't forget, don't forget, don't forget. You have. You have that call. So I wouldn't really be able to get into any. I wouldn't be productive. And then I'd have that call from, like, 1 to 2, and then my next call would be at 5, and guess what happened again? I'd be kicked into waiting mode. And it's like, oh, my God, you have that. And a whole day would go by. I'd have three calls. And like, that's great. But I really didn't get anything done besides that. And it was exhausting. It was exhausting. I don't know if anyone has that experience of being in waiting mode, but it was absolutely exhausting. It wasn't until someone told me that I was allowed to really decide what days I'd take clients. And my biggest fear here was like, oh, my God, my clients are going to quit. My clients are going to quit. They're going to see that I'm not taking client calls on Mondays and Thursdays anymore and that I have, like, two slots available on Friday, and that's it. And they're going to email me and call and be like, that's it. I don't want to work with you anymore. I can't believe you're so selfish that you take those days off. You know what happened? Not one client noticed. Not one client noticed that I didn't have any availability on Mondays and Thursdays. Right? No one noticed that I removed my evening availability either. They just scheduled for when they could make it. That was it. That's how it went. All that doom and gloom and worry for nothing, for nothing popped. Is this you? Yeah. It. It didn't happen. So you own your time. And. And here's the deal. You're starting this business so that you can have more control over your life, not so that you can transfer the control that your corporate overlords had over your life and transfer it to a bunch of different people who are paying you less money than them. And you know you're just not doing that. That's not what this is about. You get to take time off. And by the way, your clients are not paying for your time. They don't care about your time. What they care is that you are giving the best of you when they do have you. All right? And you cannot give the best of you if you are not taking Time to rest and rejuvenate. Okay? And you can't rest and rejuvenate if you have a wacky schedule that you can't plan around and it doesn't optimize you living your best life. All right, so you own your time. You do not owe your time to anyone. Of course you have to deliver upon what you say you will in your contracts, but besides that, it is yours. All right, so that's mindset shift number four of the five mindset shifts you have to make if you want to be successful in your business. Now, the fifth one is a doozy. And I say this. I mean, I'm going to say a bold statement and then I'm going to explain it. So don't get upset. Don't come for me in the comments. Unless, I mean, you can come for me for me in the comments. It'll up the. The engagement for these posts. But anyway, so stop with the plan B. You know, everyone, hi, nor welcome. Everyone. Everyone, I, I know it's a bold statement. Everyone, except for, like, Ed Sheeran, who apparently didn't do this. Everyone when they're doing something that's scary and outside of their comfort zone and they've never done it before and it's risky and there could be a massive payoff or there could be no payoff whatsoever. Most, like 99.9% of people, except for Ed Sheeran, apparently, will have a plan B. You know, in the back of your mind, they're always. There's always that little voice saying, well, if this doesn't work out, then I can go and do this. And if this doesn't work out, then I can go and do that. And that voice is kind of like scanning the world for opportunities. It's the part of you that when you're kind of having a rough day and you're not really sure what to post on social media, you're like, oh, well, maybe I'll go over to the job boards and I'll just see what kinds of jobs are available. And you might just star some of them, like, just in case. And then you might, like, in a moment of, like, real freak out, submit your resume to a couple of them just in case you're working hard in your business. But you have in the back of your mind, if this doesn't work, I have a plan B. If this doesn't work, I can go back to this. If this doesn't work, I can go and try that. Okay, Let me tell you, this is basically like you waving a big Old flag to the universe saying, I don't believe in myself. I don't believe this is to going to work. Don't send amazing opportunities to me because I am not fully committed. And guess what? The universe will listen. The universe will be like, great, we won't send you anything then. Absolutely. You are not fully bought in. We won't be fully bought in either. You, you have your plan B and we will just wait until you hit the plan B and then we'll give you some opportunities then. Okay? For the plan B. The plan B is never the thing that you actually want to do, really. You know, it's just something that you can do that you might be talented doing. It might be something that you escaped from previously, but you don't want to do it now. That's a big statement. So, yes, give that up. Give up the plan B. That is not to say that if you need money, if you genuinely need money to be coming in the door because you need to pay some bills. I need to live because you're a human in a meat suit that requires, requires things like shelter and water and food and a place to sleep. All the things you are allowed to get a job, okay? There's no shame in getting a job to support you while you're building this. All right? Elizabeth Gilbert, if you, if you know her, she's an author. She wrote Eat, Pray Love. She wrote one of my favorite books, Big Magic. She's written multiple novels. She waited tables, literally. She was a published author, she was a professional writer. And she waited tables, I think, until her third book hit the bestseller list because her belief was she didn't want to put so much pressure on her creative abilities to provide money for her. Okay? There's no shame if you want to wait some tables while you're starting your business. There's no shame if you want to work a full time job while you're waiting tables or while you're, I'm sorry, while you're starting your business. You know, you have to do what is going to work for you while you're starting that, that business. You know, you need to eat. There's no shame in making sure that money is coming in your way. But make it part of plan A. It can't be a separate plan B. Okay? Make it part of plan A. If, if you need money coming in the door right now while you're building this, that is fine. It's part of plan A. Okay? But stop with the plan B's. The plan B's are killing you. And they're killing your business and they're. They're ruining the potential help that you could give to so, so many people with your gifts. Okay, don't do it. It's very selfish. So stop applying to those jobs unless you really need one and get one right now and make it part of plan A. Okay. But continue to build your business and. Hi, Jess. Welcome. So those are the five mindset shifts that you have to make if you want to have a successful business. If you have any questions on this, then please shoot me a dm. I do have something really exciting coming in a couple of weeks, if you would like to be the first to be alerted about it. I'm going to be teaching all about the mindset shifts and the actual things that you need to do to get up and running. All right, I'm going to be announcing this in a couple weeks. If you want to be the first to know and get that first email about it when I release it, then shoot me a DM and just say porcupine. That's my code word today. I will send you the link to register and I will have more details coming out about that soon. And hi, Elizabeth, Welcome. So for now, thank you all for joining. And sorry to those of you who just joined. I will be going live later this week. I'm not sure which days I will hopefully be planning ahead. Not doing it so impromptu, but if you have any questions, if you're feeling at all stuck in your business, shoot me a dm. Ask for help. You know, I do these Friday calls, Brave Biz Labs every week at 11am Eastern. You can come to it. There's a link in bios, and wherever I'm showing up, you can find it. And if you can't find it, just DM me. And I can't tell you how often I'm in these calls. And there are new people and people who've been there for a while and they go to ask a question and I answer it, and then they're like. And I'm like, what is it? Do you have another question? They're like, oh, yeah. But like, I can't take up space. I don't want to take up too much space. Like, other people here have questions and I let them have it. I let them have it in that moment. I say, great, because you just said that you have to take up space in this moment. Okay? We live in a world that tells so many of us that we have to be more quiet, that we have to be smaller. Okay? That we have to be like, we have to blend in more. And fuck that. If you want to start a business, you have to get used to sticking out. You have to be used to putting yourself out there. And guess what? You have full permission to take up as much space as you possibly want. Okay? That's it. And guess what? If you don't do it, your business will not grow because people cannot hire you if they don't know that you exist. And guess what? Like, if you are the most mild, small, quiet version of yourself and you're constantly thinking about how you can make yourself, like, even more bland and even smaller and even quieter, how are they going to find out that you exist? So all that to the point. Ask for help. Ask for help. DM me. The worst thing I'm going to say is, wow, it's a huge question. Come to the Friday call or let's hop on a call and see if you could actually use some more help. That's the worst thing someone will say. All right, but ask for help. Take up space. Let yourself be seen. Okay? That's the biggest mindset shift of all, is put yourself out there. It goes back to stop being a weenie. All right? Stop being a weenie. All right? So with that, I hope you all have an amazing evening. Thank you for joining to Elizabeth and Jess and Noor and Bhakti and Vladimir and David. And David and I don't know if anyone commented and the other one didn't come through. Sometimes the technology just does not work with comments. So if you did, I will go through and just make sure that I'm responding outside of this. Anyway, I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and money mindset coach. Have a great night, everyone, and I will see you all soon. Now's the awkward moment where I try to end the live on tutorial.
