The Anti-5am Club

Katie McManus (business strategist and leadership coach) hosts a live-streamed session titled "The Anti-5am Club" where she criticizes the marketing around the popular "5am Club" as a form of "shame marketing" that showcases perfection, sets unrealistic standards, and makes people feel inadequate. She proposes "empathetic marketing" as an alternative: normalize people’s real lives, meet clients where they are, showcase struggles, and encourage goals in imperfect ways. The stream is interactive, includes technical-audio troubleshooting across platforms, and ends with an invitation to DM for help and a note that she will go live daily for a month.

Hello, I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and leadership coach. Welcome to day three of going live for a month in a row. That was a weird way to say it. Every day for a month. Yeah. Anyway, it's Saturday. The routine's a little thrown off. And welcome to those of you who are joining. So a little housekeeping keeping first. I am going live to the Facebooks, to LinkedIn, to YouTube, to Twitter. Sometimes not all the comments come through. So if you're commenting and I'm not responding and saying hi to you, it's not you. I swear to God, I'm not mad at you. It's just sometimes technology fails us. Deal. So I love this to be interactive. If you have any questions or any thoughts that you want to and you want to add to the conversation, please pop them in the chat. I want to tell you about this new club that I just made up in my head. It's. What we're talking about today is the anti 5:00am Club. Okay. Now, this is not me saying I'm anti waking up at 5am this is not me saying that I hate 5am on the clock. I. You know, 5am is a fine time. It's a time that exists and it's existed since we invented time. Right. I am not saying any of that stuff. I'm not saying it's bad. I'm not judging other people. The thing that I have against the 5am club is that it is based in elements of what I like to call shame marketing. And shame marketing is exactly how it sounds. Marketing that is designed to shame people for. For tuning in. Pamela, the chat, the sound is cutting out. That's the weirdest thing. It's never done that on Streamyard before. Okay, thank you for telling me. Let me just see here. And is that it? What I call it is kind of cutting out. That's weird. And is that how it's doing it on Facebook too? Let's see. We're. If you're joining in. Hi. Give me a second. We're just checking out the sound. I've never had any issues with sound on Streamyard before where. If you're joining in. Hi. Give me a second. We're just checking out this. I think it must be a LinkedIn thing because it's not happening that way on any other platform. I just checked and I'm more than happy if you're watching this on LinkedIn and the audio is all messed up. I don't know why I'm saying this. If you can hear me, if the audio is messed up on LinkedIn, you really want to hear this. And it's not coming through clearly. I'm more than happy to share the recording of this with you. Okay, so we're talking about shame marketing right now. So. And how people who are in the 5am Club use it. They may not even realize they're using it. It's just a marketing strategy that got handed down to them. So. Okay, let's talk about the elements of shame marketing. What makes something shame marketing? First and foremost, it showcases how a person, how one person is doing something perfectly. It's showcasing how perfect they are. So an example of how shame marketing works at the 5am Club. Hi Mares. I hope I'm pronouncing your name correctly. Welcome. Is someone goes on and they share a story about how they're waking up. It's 4:55 and they're getting up and they're making their green juice and they're meditating and they're doing yoga and they're going for a run and they're doing their whole routine and then they're getting into work at like 7am there's nothing wrong with that except when we start saying, this is me living my perfect life. And the, the connotations underneath are, you should be doing this too. Okay, look at me. Look at how perfect I am. Don't you wish you could be like me? Yeah. Farina. I think it's honestly just LinkedIn. Unfortunately it's coming through clear on Facebook. Facebook and on YouTube if you want to find me there and on Twitter. So I'm going to keep going and hopefully the LinkedIn world will figure it out. So anyway, so it really sets, the number two element here is that it sets unrealistic standards for self care, for doing work, for showing up in our human bodies and being the people we want to be. People have kids, people have pets, people are night owls. They don't want to get up at 5am when we set the standard of a right way and a wrong way, it really becomes problematic for the people who follow us because what it does to them is subconsciously it's, oh wow, here's this person doing something the right way. And it's showcasing all the ways in which I'm doing it the wrong way. And it makes people feel self conscious and shamed. And we're not about that in the anti 5am Club, okay? Because what works for me is none of your damn business. Because it works for me. What works for you is your damn business, okay? That's what we have to be caring about, okay? So some elements, and I like to call this empathetic marketing, okay? It's showcasing our empathy, how we see the other person and how we see what's possible for them right where they are, okay? So it showcases your clients and their real, honest to goodness lives, okay? It showcases their struggles, it showcases what they worry about, it showcases what their actual schedule looks like. Maybe they are waking up at 5am to make school lunches for their kids because they, you know, have a crazy life and they have to take care of absolutely everything. But we're being realistic about it. That that 5am Wake up call is not about self care for them. If they were to join the real 5am Club, they'd getting up at 3am And I'm sorry, that's fucking ridiculous, right? It normalizes for them. It normalizes the struggle. It normalizes everything that they go through and everything they've gone through up till now, okay? It doesn't make them feel wrong for not having it figured out already, all right? And finally, it encourages them that they can achieve whatever goal it is that they have in mind in their own imperfect way, okay? That's empathetic marketing. That's what we celebrate at the anti 5aM Club, okay? Meeting people where they're at. Now, if you're curious about empathetic marketing and you have no idea how you can do this for your services or for your business, this is what I do with my clients, okay? My whole program, my BYOB and my one on one programs, they are designed around how do you create an empathetic marketing campaign for your clients to see them where they are right now and to make them feel like everything is actually gonna be okay. Okay? That they're not it up, they're not gloriously up, they're not doing it wrong. There's just a better way for them to do it, okay? It's not based in scarcity. It's not based in like making them feel bad because no one wants to feel bad. I mean, that's essentially what shame marketing is, is I want you to feel bad about how you're doing. Life right now versus empathetic marketing is like cool. I want you to feel however you feel right now. I want you to know that's normal. I'm going to normalize it for you. And I also want you to know that I'm here believing you can have what you want. That. That. I mean, that's just like, what a beautiful shift, right? Anyway, if you're curious about this for your business, then shoot me a dm. I'm going to wrap this up because I know how annoying it is to try to watch something and I just realized, Florina, you've been up there the whole time. Sorry about that. I know how annoying it is to try to be watching something with the audio being wonky. If Streamyard's audio is now acting wonky, I'm going to be really upset because I was having a really hard time with another one. That'd be problematic. Anyway. Yeah. But hopefully this is useful to you all. This is day three of me going live. I will be going live every day for the rest of this month, so stay tuned. That's 27 more days. If you have anything that you want me to talk about, I'd love to hear about it in the comments or shoot me a dm and I'd be happy to create some content just for you. Anyway, I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and leadership coach. Have an amazing weekend and I will see you tomorrow.
