What if your boss finds out that you started a business and then fires you like before you're ready to actually quit and jump full time into your business? This is a big fear that a lot of my clients have. And this is part three of my seven part theories on how to start a business on the side of your 9 to 5. So if you're starting a business while you're still working a full time job, then there will come a point where your boss is likely to find out that you started a business and it'll either be because you told them or they found out some other way. The problem is you need this paycheck to float you until you're making enough money in the business so that you could go full time. So how do you explain your business to your boss that they don't freak out and fire you before you're ready to jump to full time? Hold on, because I'm going to tell you. So first and foremost, we have to understand where your boss is coming from. Your boss will probably worry that the fact that you've started this business means that you are planning on leaving at some point in the future. And that point in the future might not be the best time for you to jump ship and for them to have to replace you. And if you don't explain it well, what can happen is they'll get nervous and think, well, I might as well fire them now and replace them now because I can handle handle replacing this person in this frame of time. I don't know if I'm going to be able to handle that in the future. And we don't want that to happen. So we have to quell all of their concerns right off the bat. So here are five things that you're going to want to say to reassure them and to make sure that you don't get fired. And believe you me, this is not legal advice, okay? I'm a business coach. The only thing I really care about is you starting a business and living life on your terms. Okay, I'm going to tell you what I think you should do. And you can check it against your own conscience, against your family lawyer, and you can decide what to do from there. Number one, you're going to switch swear up and down that this is just a passion project and only ever meant to be a side hustle. And you and I will know that's a lie. But they don't need to know it's a lie. Not right now. Number two, tell them that you're doing this because you need the extra money to reach a specific goal. Now maybe you're getting married and you want to save up for your wedding. Or maybe you want to buy a house or save for your kids education fund, whatever. Come up with something and tell them that's why you're doing this. And again, lie if you want to. Number three, explain how you have explicitly scheduled this so it will never conflict with your day job. Number four, outline how it does not conflict with the work that you do. You might explain how there's no crossover clients, there's no funny business with intellectual property rights, what have you. And number five, this is where the acting skills really need to come out. Make sure that they know you are a die hard for the company. You are so committed to your career with them. Not only are you committed, you have a career trajectory that you have in mind. You have promotions you are working towards, you have drunk the Kool aid and you're not going anywhere. Again, lie and make it clear that this is just something you're playing with on the side. It's not that serious. And once you've convinced them that you are not a flight risk, then go ahead and devote as much time as you possibly can to building this business up so you can replace your salary and jump to full time. Because you and I know that was the goal the whole time anyway. I'm Katie, your practical business coach and new business owners work with me so they can leave their corporate 9 to 5 and replace their 6 figure salary by doing work they love that actually helps people.
