The worst kind of business coach for ADHD biz owners

Katie McManus (business strategist and money mindset coach) warns ADHD business owners not to hire coaches with a "my way or the highway" mentality because such coaches can crush clients' intuition and self-esteem. She encourages clients to push back on coach suggestions, use those reactions to co-design approaches that fit their personality and brain, and iterate until systems support their strengths. The clip closes with a brief promotional pitch describing her services for ADHD entrepreneurs.

If you have ADHD and you're looking for a coach, a business coach, anyone who can help guide you through whatever period of life you're in, here's the number one thing you want to look for is you need to make sure you're not hiring someone who has a my way or the highway kind of mentality. Believe me, I've worked with people like that. They are soul crushing. Oh my gosh, a bee just landed on my leg. It's a honeybee. Look at how pretty it is. Hi, friend. Oh, where are you going? Okay, so anyway, back to the point. I've worked with coaches like this and it's damaging to someone with ADHD for a few reasons. For me, I found it really crushing because, like, it made me not listen to my intuition. And regardless of, like, how good an idea it is for someone else, it didn't matter. If it wasn't an idea that I felt like, resonated with me and my vision for my business and, and with how I work best, then I would always fail and it would really hurt my self esteem because I started to see myself as someone who, like, wanted all these things but just could never get there. So take this from me. I know how damaging this can be. Do not hire someone who has a my way or the highway kind of mentality when they work with clients. And when I work with clients, you know, I always train them on this. I always say, you know, if I have an idea, if I'm, if I'm offering, you know, some kind of intuitive hit with you, if I'm proposing some kind of project to you, push back. If it's not something that you want or that you feel is a good fit for you and your business, push back. I don't care. It's not my ego that matters here. It's. It's you. It's you and your business and your goals and how you want to do this that matters most. So, for instance, like, say I have an idea for a webinar that I think my clients should run. I will present the idea. And what I'm looking for is not, oh my God, Katie, that's an amazing idea. I should definitely do that. No, no, no. Like, if that happens, great. Like, let's roll with it. But what I'm listening for is what parts of the idea resonate and what parts of the idea do you fucking hate? Because in that information, we can design something that absolutely fits you. Your goals, your personality, how you work best, the types of clients you want to attract, all that Jazz. And the problem with working with a coach who has a my way or the highway kind of mentality is they're not going to listen for those cues. They're going to say, hey, here's my idea. Here's. Here's what you need to go do. Go do it. And then when you can't do it because it doesn't fit the way your brain works, they're going to look at you as if you're a failure, which you're not. The hardest part about being someone with ADHD is that our whole lives, we've basically been gaslit by everyone, whether they know it or not. And all the systems, school systems, work systems, you know, family systems, into thinking that there's just something wrong with us, that we just can't adhere to gear to how things are set up. And we do this to ourselves as well. And starting a business can be this transformational moment for someone with ADHD where you realize not only that things have not been set up for you your whole life and that is why you've had a hard time, but you also start to realize, wow, like, if I want to, I can actually set something up that works for me, that supports me in all the ways that I'm brilliant and. And it just takes creativity and the willingness to experiment and see what works and what doesn't work, and then iterate. Okay, that's all it takes. And when someone with ADHD does that and finds the way that supports them most in starting a business and working, doing all the things, nothing can hold you back. Nothing. Nothing. You know, like your operating system. And you can tackle life and get whatever you want, but often the only way for you to get there is to have the right support to help you get there. Oh, and hi. I help ADHD business owners make more money in less time with fewer distractions by showing you how to discover your profitable niche. Design an offer that they are starving to buy, and I train you on how to market and sell your services without wanting to vomit. I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and money mindset coach and apparently friend of the honeybees.
