Visibility- a non-negotiable

Katie McManus argues that staying hidden kills your business. She dismisses business cards and ghost websites, then lays out three concrete moves: post regularly, engage with others, and invite people to a next step. She's launching a 30-day visibility challenge for September.
I can taste yo, yo, yo, yo Words I can taste yo, yo, yo I can taste yo, yo, yo, yo words I can taste yo, yo, yo I can taste yo, yo, yo I can taste ye. Hello, I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and leadership coach, coming to you live on LinkedIn, Instagram. And by the way, I'm literally just balancing my phone up against my laptop. So if it falls at any point, don't mind me. It's just a janky setup. Going live also on The Facebooks, on YouTube and on Twitter, even though I'm not really on Twitter. Hi, Rich. Hi, Lauren. Good to see you both. Welcome. I am talking this evening and by the way, this is the first September 1, the first day of a month of going live, every damn day. And so I hope you'll join me and hello, welcome. Thank you for coming. I hope you'll be joining me. Throughout this month, I'm going to be offering insights as to how to be more successful in your business, how to get over those really down dark days that happen to all of us. I know some of you know what I'm talking about. And really how to optimize yourself as a business owner who also wants to have a life. Okay. We're gonna have some ADHD tips. It's gonna be a whole lot of fun anyway. And also I love for this to be. Oh, we have to go live, Absolutely. But I love for this to be interactive. So if anything I'm saying if you have any questions about it, please pop it in the chat. If you have an idea you wanna share, please do that as well. I wanted to talk and kick off this whole month since this is essentially what I'm doing. I wanted to talk about visibility and. Hi, Sharon. Welcome. Visibility is the. Is the air that your business breathes. Okay? Without visibility, no one will know about you, no one will know about you. And if no one knows about you, they can't give you their money. That's not how that works. Right. So visibility is a non negotiable for your business. Okay? Visibility has to happen every damn day. And you can do it the hard way. If you like doing things the hard way, I fully support it. The hard way could be going pounding on the pavement, knocking on doors, handing out flyers, putting flyers in people's, you know, windshield wipers so that when they come back to their car, they have a panic thinking that they got a parking ticket. That's always fun. It could be holding a sign at a busy intersection, waving at people, maybe wear a Hot dog costume while you're at it. If you really want to do that, please go and be my guest. But I'm guessing you don't want that. I'm guessing you want something that's a little less sweaty, that doesn't require you to wear, like, a nice, nice outfit. Maybe you don't even want to wear pants while you're doing this. So the name of the game at that point is social media. Okay? Social media. You're interacting with me here on whichever social media platform you're. You're seeing me. I'm. I'm broadcasting to 1, 2, 3, 5 different social media platforms at this moment, okay? So I'm reaching all of my people, all those places, okay? I might have a very small following in some places. Like, I think I have 12 followers on Twitter. But hey, guys, showing up on social media is an evergreen way that people can discover you later. So this live will be saved, and people could come across it tomorrow, next week, a month from now, and think, oh, my gosh, like, this is really helpful. This is what I needed to hear today. The same is possible for your business. Okay? Visibility is critical if you want to have a successful business. Okay? My. My friend and mentor, Rick Tamlin, says you cannot be a secret and a success at the same time. That is so true. So I want to take a couple minutes to talk about what visibility is absolutely not. Okay. That most of us are guilty of when we first start out in our businesses. Spindrift, little plug. No, just kidding. I'm not a sponsor of them or they don't sponsor me. What it's not and how you can actually do it. Okay. And it's not as complicated as you can make it out to be, okay? Swear to God. So I wanted to share how I. When I first started my business. I got this so wrong, guys. I. I was so messed up about this. I completely discounted that. I had this whole career in sales and marketing, and I just went with, you know what the coaching school told me would work to get clients, and I made business cards, and these are bad. These are really bad business cards I have. I barely gave any of them out. This is almost a full box. Okay, so let me just read to you what this says on this business card. Okay? So Katie McManus, coaching co active executive and leadership. My clients don't have a flying fuck what that means unless they're also coaches, by the way, then it says, Katie McManus, founder and lead coach, as if I had other coaches working under me, okay? And then I had sold myself on this idea that my company would be called Soul Style Coaching, because that is memorable. And I put my phone number on here, and my goal was to just give these out, and that was going to be my visibility. Do you know what happens to business cards that I come in possession of? They end up in my pocket. And then when I do laundry, they. They become lint. They become little chunks of, like, broken cardboard that are illegible and aren't. Yeah, I can't. I can never call the person or email them. It just doesn't work. This is not visibility. Business cards are not visibility. Setting up a website, and I will nod to the fact that having a website can boost your confidence a little bit when you're starting out so you have something to point to people. But people are not going to discover your website unless you point to it, unless you direct them there, unless you're being visible first. Okay? So you can spend all the time you want designing that website. If you're not pointing people to go check it out, then it's not doing you any good. That doesn't count as visibility. Hustle culture. Hustle culture. My least favorite thing is not visibility. You just acting busy all the time and, like, looking stressed out in a cafe, typing away. And I got a like for that one. That is not. That is not visibility. That just makes you look like a crazy person who's had too much caffeine, which maybe you are no hate. But is that really what you want people to know you as? Okay? And shuffling. Anything that has you just shuffling papers. Okay? The bare minimum in any job. In any job. I don't care if you're busting tables or selling T shirts or you're a parking attendant. Do you know what the number one indicator of successes in any of those jobs is? That you show up for your shift. Hello. Welcome. You have to show up for your shift. You have to be visible in your job, okay? When you work for yourself, that visibility is online. That visibility, your storefront is online. It's on social media platforms. And when you're visible, you have to be visible in a way that people understand how you are useful to them. And if you're not useful to them, how are you useful to their mother, their father, their siblings, their neighbors, their cousins, their bestie, their spouse? Hi, Stephen Doyle. Welcome. It's late for you in Ireland. Anyway, people need to know how you're useful to them, okay? This is why posting on social media is so powerful. You literally have an opportunity any second of the day to hop on, create something simple that will grab someone else's attention in three seconds flat, where they then understand what it is that you do. And if you are useful to them, okay, that is so powerful. And you get to do it for free. That's for free. That's not pounding pavement. That's not, you know, buying. By the way, this box of business cards that I ordered, I think it was like $54, okay? It was stupid. And I never got a client out of it. Okay? I've gotten so many clients out of social media. All right, don't buy the business cards. Invest your time and energy in showing up. Here, here. This is far more powerful. Okay, so what does this look like? And I understand for those of you who are like, what am I going to do? Like, just create content all day long. I have to do other things. I have to live a life. I have to eat. Maybe you have children and they like to eat too. You don't have to post all day, every day. Okay? Remember, social media is this magical place where people will be able to discover whatever it is that you post for days, weeks, months, years after you've put it out there, okay? It's gonna do the work for you, but you have to show up first. Okay, so here are some. Here are some ways of showing up in people's awareness so that they remember that you exist. And because you know, you don't have a marketing problem, you have a being remembered problem, they. They can't give you their money or refer someone to you who will give you their money if they don't remember that you exist. Okay? So here are four simple things that you can do to show up on social media to be visible so that people remember who you are and know how you're useful to them. Number one is posting, obviously, okay? Posting can encompass anything from writing a post, posting a picture and explaining why it's relevant to your business. Creating a graphic on Canva. It could be going live like this. It could be doing a little video, like a reel or a tikt talk. By the way, you can share those anywhere you want, okay? Those are perfectly relevant on Twitter, on LinkedIn, anything that has to do with your business. Okay? Post, post, post, post, post something. In my group call today, I. I used to say this a lot. I don't know why I dropped off you. Posting a picture of a ferret in a magician outfit is more impactful for your business than you posting nothing, okay? You posting a picture of something that's weird and out There. And, you know, some weird rodent is at least going to get people's attention that you're out there and you exist. Yes. A ferret. I've done this before. There are a couple ferrets, I believe on my LinkedIn page. If you want to go, like, hunt them down, it gets you in front of people. They remember that you exist. They're like, why is this person posting a picture of a ferret? If you didn't post the picture of a ferret, you know how many more, how many times they would have thought about you that day? Less. Less. Probably zero. Unless you were showing up in another way. Okay, it doesn't matter when you're getting started, just build the muscle. Just be visible. Just show up. Okay? So posting is number one. Number two is engaging. You have to engage on other people's stuff. If you want people to engage on your things, then you need to go and engage with them. And this could be your ideal clients. This could be people who do similar things to you. This could be people who don't have anything to do with what you're up to, but they have a great personality and they show up consistently and they engage back with you. Okay, it really doesn't matter. Go and engage. What this does is it trains the social media machines that you are a real person and that you're forming real connections and that your stuff, because you're engaging in other people's things and they're then engaging on your stuff, that your stuff is worth showing to more people. Okay? And that's what we want. We want more people to see it. Because the more visible we get to be, the better for our business. Okay? More people will be aware that we exist. How exciting is that? Now, finally, you have to invite people. You can post and you can show up and you can engage and you can do all these things. You have to have a call to action. You have to tell people what the next step in your relationship is. Okay, I just said that. And it's like, oh, my God, you guys are getting married already. That seems fast. No, you're not getting married. The next step in your relationship is they join your newsletter. They sign up for your newsletter. Maybe you have a master class that they can get access to if they submit their email. Maybe you're like me and you host a Q and A group community call every Friday. I do. It's called Brave Biz Labs. That's for anyone who's a business owner who just wants to be a little braver and have. And have A place to ask questions. It's amazing. It's tomorrow at 11am if you want to join. And every Friday at 11am Eastern if you want to join. The link is in my bio pretty much everywhere where you are. You can invite them to be a client because that's what you're here for after all, right? Hi Ree. Welcome. And yes, you do have to start coming. You can invite people to comment, you can invite people to do a whole slew of things. You want to invite people into your sphere of influence, okay? They can't get there though if they don't know that you exist. Okay? So visibility, visibility, visibility. By the way, all my clients, my, my one on one clients, my clients in byob, any client in any smaller training I've ever run, I have three rules for them that they have to do every damn day. Number one is visibility. Visibility for their business, okay? Number two is they have to tend to their bodies, okay? Because we're all just sentient beings walking around in meat suits, okay? Our meat suits have to operate well, okay? If you're not taking care of the meat suit, you're probably not going to be able to do this business very long, all right? And finally, they have to do something that takes care of their soul, their spirit, their mind, however they. They want to view that, okay? This makes sure that we are whole people bringing our whole ass selves to this business and to our clients, okay? That is where the magic happens. Okay? If you can just commit with me for one month. For the whole month of September. There's only 30 days in September. Yeah, that's right. If you can commit with me to show up and be visible in your business for the whole month of September. I can't guarantee anything here, but I'm going to predict that good things will happen for your business. And if you want to show up with me as I go live, it's going to be a little unpredictable, timing wise, just because life is a little unpredictable over here. But if you want to show up and tell me how you're doing this, I would love to hear it. I would absolutely love to hear it. I just hit myself in the eye with my ponytail, by the way. Anyway, on that note, I think we should wrap this up. Thank you so much. For those of you who've joined Sharon Meredith RE Connell spawns. Okay, this is something. This is completely besides the point. Why is it's. I know it's pronounced Colonel, but why is it spelled C O L O N E L? That has never made sense. To me. It's pronounced Colonel K, E, R, N, E, L. It's not Colonel. Why? R.E. you're British. This is. This came from you guys. You should tell me. Anyway, Rich and Lauren, thank you all for joining. And Steven, of course. Course. All the way in Ireland. I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and leadership coach. Welcome to a year. A year. A month. God, I was committing to a lot. Welcome to a month of visibility with me. Can't wait to see you. Be more visible yourselves. And stay tuned. There's so much more to come. Bye. Okay, now this is the awkward part where I have to, like, end two things at the same time. Okay. End here. End here.
