What are you Actually COMMITTED to?

Katie McManus walks through why entrepreneurs get stuck: they commit to excuses like 'I don't know how' or fear of judgment instead of actions that actually work. She uses her own stories to show how to call bullshit on yourself and get a mentor or coach to help align your business with the life you want.

Hello, everyone. I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and leadership coach. And I have just oodles of poodles and poodle mixes just swirling around me. So if you see them or you hear them, bark in the background. I apologize in advance. Welcome. It is Wednesday. I have spent the last two days in this most incredible intensive, led by two really incredible coaches. And I have to share with you. I got called out. I got called out for being a weenie, for being committed to my excuses rather than in my business. That hurt. It hurt. But it was so necessary for me to hear and just to share with you. I won't. I won't go into the details because I don't want to. I never want to speak ill of anyone else and out anyone. But I had hired someone to help me with something. The advice didn't fit. You know, I could. I could vote on the quality of the advice. I got weird about it. I got weird about it. I started doing it. It wasn't working. I hired help to help me with. Didn't work. It's just not working. And I just was so dug in on my excuses of, like, I'm doing the things and all stuff. And it's like, well, it's not working. So instead of just being dug in on all the excuses for it being bad and all stuff, why don't just change it? And it's like, oh, yeah, that sounds way better. And hi, David, welcome. And it made me think of the kinds of things that we get committed to in our business rather than the success of our business. And tonight I want to talk about excuses, but this next week, I really want to talk about commitments because I talk about being brave all the time, right? And I talk about not being weenie. But in order to show up and be brave at anything, you have to be fucking committed, right? You have to be committed. Can you hear the. The wookie sounds from the oodles over there? And I call them oodles. There's a labradoodle and a sheep a doodle. But anyway, you have to be committed. No one goes after doing the brave thing. Hi, Harish. Oh, thank you. No one goes after doing the brave thing unless they've actually committed to doing it. Okay? I'm not gonna go become a lion tamer. I haven't committed to doing that. I'm also not going to become a trapeze artist. I'm not committed to that. I'm also terrified of heights, and I have no interest in fixing that. I am, however, committed to my business. And I know my business requires moments, if not hours of bravery at a time. Case in point, being live as often as I am. This, this does require bravery. It does get easier over time, but that's how it goes. But here, here are some things that I see so many business owners or starting business owners, let's be real. If you let these things stop you, if you stay committed to these excuses, you're never actually going to get to the point where you're a business owner. It's just not going to happen. Okay? If you're that committed, if you're that in love with your excuses and you spend that much time with them and coddling them and making them the reason why you can't go and do the thing, you're never going to go and do the thing. So I'm just going to call them out. And if this is you, I'm going on vacation starting Friday. But if this is you and you're like, I'm sick and tired of this. I don't want to be this anymore, you and I need to talk. And one of the things that I offer to figure out if I could be a good support to you in getting over this commitment to your excuses. They offer a generate income strategy. Call 30 minutes. We suss out basically everything that's going on in your business right now, what you've tried so far, what your excuses are, what you're committed to, where you're struggling and what you really want. Like, what do you want your life to be? What is your dream business? Okay, what is your dream life? Because here's the thing. You can build a business following everyone else's advice that is super successful, but if you don't have it connected to the dream life you want, then what's the point? You know, if you want to work 30 hours a week because you want to be able to paint or spend time with family or travel, if you build a business arbitrarily following anyone's, just anyone's advice, and you could end up working 60 hours a week, that's useless. So if you're ready to commit to your actual business, I want you to book one of these calls. And how to do that is you're going to DM me and I'm going to send you a link to do so. But let's dive in. Here are the things that people generally hold on to. And they keep these things. They keep themselves from establishing. And I'm sorry, I'm getting distracted because the dogs are just being crazy. On the other side of the computer, they use these things as. As hurdles, self made hurdles to prevent themselves from being successful in their business, which I think is just absolutely ludicrous. Number one is not knowing how. I hear this all the time. I hear this in my being brave call. I hear it on strategy calls. I hear it in networking groups. I hear it with my clients. You know, sometimes, sometimes even when they have support, they get stuck back into the. I don't know how to get clients. There are a million ways to get clients, people. A million, a gazillion. There are infinite ways to get clients. One of the best ways to figure out how to get clients is to get help with. From people who know how to get clients. And in getting help, you know, you want to look for a strategist or a coach or a mentor or who has the kind of business that you want to have. Okay? So if you want to get sponsorship clients because you want to be an influencer, you're obviously not going to call me. I'm not an influencer. No interest in being an influencer. I love donuts way too much, okay? There's no way I'm going around changing clothes in the middle of the street anyway. If you want to start a marketing agency, look to other marketing agency owners and ask them to be your mentor and ask them how they got their very first clients. You know, if you're a coach or consultant and you're wanting to get clients for your business, there's me, there's a million other people who could also help you get help. Ask for help. Get the strategies and find the one, you know, this person that you go to. And they're going to have a million different ideas of ways you can get clients, right? They're going to have some things that are tried and true. You're gonna find a way to make it your own. Okay? Just trust that. And can I just show you what's going on behind me? Luna. Charlie. Oh, it's mirrored. So Luna has decided. Where are you guys going? That Charlie's just her. Her playpen or her jungle gym. And so. Look at her. She's like chewing on poor Charlie's legs. Anyway, this is. This is my life. Have happy summer on Cape Cod. They were so calm before I went live. They are committed to causing a ruckus instead of letting me do my work. Aren't you guys? Okay, so if you're committed to not knowing how. That is such a lame excuse. It is such a. It is the worst excuse in the world. I Just don't know how to do it. No, it's not the how. It's. You're chickening out on yourself. You're chickening out on your dream. You're chickening out on this business. And I would actually call into question, do you actually want to build a business? Okay. Because if you're letting. I don't know how get in the way of actually getting your business up and running with paying clients, like, that is not a bit. That's not an entrepreneur's mind that I'm hearing or an entrepreneur's voice that I'm hearing. And you have to be an entrepreneur to start a business. It's a. It's a necessary thing, and oftentimes not like being committed to the not knowing how is a cover for a few other things that are going on. I wrote them down. It's being afraid that you're gonna fail, being afraid of being judged for putting yourself out there, being afraid of success. I. I can't tell you how many times I get on a strategy call with someone, and they are just worried that guys, stop it, Savage. They're not listening to me. They're very poorly trained. I get on a strategy call with someone, and they are like, their very first concern is that they're going to get 20, 30, 40 clients right off the bat, and then they're not going to be able to handle it. Okay? So right off the bat, they've created this fear that they're not going to be able to handle their business when it gets big. So they're not even going to go after their first 2, 3, 4, 5 clients because they're so afraid that it may go off the rails. They may not be able to deliver when it gets super big. Just so you know, it's hard to get to 20, 30 clients. Okay? And by the time you do, hopefully you're making a lot of money if you're charging appropriately. And that's a different topic. Charging appropriately is a different topic that I need to have with everyone. That's another commitment thing that people have. If you're holding off on. On success for yourself, I'm sorry, you need to go get a job. You can. You cannot be in this business if that's what you're letting yourself get hung up on. You cannot be in business for yourself. If you're worried for your own success. You got to go back to a job. I'm sorry to break it to you. This is not for you. Harish, with your confident words, thinking to establish a business individually Keep growing and keep glowing. Katie McGinnis. Oh, thanks, Harish. And I hope I'm pronouncing your name correct. Please let me know if I'm not. So not knowing how can be a cover up for that. It can be a cover up for, you know, it's. It's vulnerable. It is. Let's just have a tender moment. It is vulnerable to put yourself out there to out yourself to friends and family members who have watched you usually establish a very solid career, something that you may or may not have gone to school for, and then to say, no, I don't want this anymore. I want to start my own thing. Okay, that is vulnerable. You're opening yourself up to them coming in and saying, oh, well, what about this? And what about this? How are you going to pay the bills? Are you going to lose the house? How are you going to feed your kids? That's a lot. That's a lot of emotional stuff that they're just going to shove in your face. Okay, so I get it. I get it. Having that fear. Yeah. Yeah. But here's the thing. Is avoiding them saying those things better than you actually creating this business. And for the people I'm speaking to, it's not just creating a business to make money. It's not just creating a business for the sake of showing yourself you can do it. I'm talking to you people who want to start a business because you want to have an impact on the world. There's a corner of the world of your community or of the people that you work with day to day, and you see that there's an opportunity that you could make it better. Okay. Is avoiding your family and your friends pushing some doubt onto you worth giving that up? Worth the potential impact you could have? Oh, my God. Guys, why? Why right now? And why in this room? Why in this room? Okay, you know what? You guys are getting evicted. Come on. You're getting evicted. Come on. Come on, Amy. Go, Amy, go. We're just tricking them. Okay, good bye. Sliding glass door. Oh, they look so sad. Okay, that was too distracting. I'm sorry. I hope that was entertaining for you. And for those of you with dogs, I hope you can relate. So, train of thought, where did you go? Yes. So you want to have this impact on the world. You want to make it better. And there's only one you. There's only one you in the world. There's only one you who cares with that level of care that you have for this thing that you know you can make better. Okay? You chickening out because you're afraid that people are going to judge you or Michelle, your dogs are awesome. Thank you. I think so, too. But just this moment, they weren't. Their awesomeness wasn't matching up with the moments, you know? But the things that you care about, there's only one person who cares about them in the way that you do. And there's only one person with your specific gifts and your specific way of helping, okay? Your friends and family, they care about you. They are worried for your. Your stability and all that stuff. And they're coming from a place of love. But don't let that stop you. Please don't let that stop you. If you let that stop you, oh, my God, you are robbing the world of the gift that you could potentially give the world, okay? It is cruel all around if you let that chick, you know, keep you from doing it. So here's the other thing is the thing that I was doing is I was getting. Oh, this is so hard to say. Say I'm the. I'm the be brave person. I'm the don't be a weenie person. And I have to admit that I was being a weenie. So being frustrated, like, getting so committed to the excuse that I'm frustrated that this isn't working when really, really, if you're honest with yourself. And I had to be like, my. My coach called it out on me. She said, you know what? You're chickening. You're making your. I'm sorry. I'm flustered because this is so hard for me to talk about, and I want to be open about this. It is hard to talk about when you fail in your business. It's normal. It's normal. And we need to talk about it more. We need to talk about the hard parts where we actually get in our own ways. Okay? This is why it's so critical to have a coach or a business strategist or a mentor who's going to call you on your show and make you look there. Because you know what? We don't go there on our own. And I say that as a person who. This is. My life is doing this, and I don't go there on my own for myself. So if you think you can do it on your own with this, Michelle, you're doing great. Thank you. I appreciate that. So being committed to the excuse of this isn't working when you know you're actually half assing it. You're actually half assing the work. You're either not doing it the full way it's supposed to do, it's supposed to happen. Or you see that it's broken. You see that the way being prescribed to you is broken, and it's not effective for you or your audience, and yet you still stay committed to it. That's awful. And yet there's something righteous about it. Let's. Let's talk about the righteousness that I was pretty much attached to. I was so attached to the righteousness of, oh, no, I'm doing the work. This person gave me shit advice. But you know what? They gave me the advice and I paid for it. And so now I'm committed. I'm doing the work. I hired someone to help me do the work, and here I am and I have no results. How crazy is that? How crazy is that? And yet, tell me. Tell me the times you've done this, because I know this isn't me. Tell me the times you've done this. Tell me about the crazy fad diets that you did and how they didn't get your results, about how you fell off the wagon, ate like three pints of ice cream. I say this from experience. I've done that before. Tell me about the study plans that you did in college where you waited till the last minute, you're like, I got this. I got this. I got this. And then the system just broke down around you. Tell me about any time where you. You were. You just committed to this thing and with. With gross energy, knowing that it was bad, knowing that it wasn't going to be effective, and yet you were just like, I'm gonna. I'm gonna show them I'm doing the work and it's not working. Okay? Like, I. I'm like going through an experience in my body right now where I'm just like, I'm feeling this just release. Like I don't have to commit to work that I know isn't going to work. Okay? But also, I can't let that. I can't be so committed to things like that anymore so that they prevent me from being committed to work that actually works. And I hope this is making sense. I hope I'm making sense. I'm still like, mid processing this. And I learned from one of my mentors, Rick Tamlin, that instead of spending all this time processing, you just produce it, because usually it's useful to other people. So I hope this is useful and relevant and making sense to you all. So here's what you do instead. You call bullshit on yourself. You own that you're Making the excuse of I don't know how. And you own that you're married to it and you're not actually not letting all the ways you can do the thing get into you because you're so firmly planted. And I don't know how, you know, I can't tell you how many conversations I have where someone says, I don't know how to do this and I tell them how to do it and they're like, oh, I don't know how to do this. Like, they're just so dug in on not knowing how that they're not even open to any strategies to learn the how. And I know this is really common. This is. I mean, we're humans, we're a pain in the ass. Like, if you talk about the different creatures that are the biggest pain in the ass, like, yes, us, the dogs also, we get dug in on the weirdest things. You know, we get dug in on our belief of our own smallness and what an ugly thing to be dug in on. So not knowing how, like righteously doing work that you know isn't going to be effective and then being bitter that it's not working. No, no, cut that out. All of this. We have to cut it out. And if you find yourself in any of these cycles or if you sense that there's something there but you're really not really willing to go there yet, and if you know that there's this business in you, if you know there's this business in you that is not just going to make you more money, give you more freedom, give you a sense of accomplishment and creativity, and also make an incredible impact on your world, Whatever corner of the world matters to you. If you know you have this business in you and you're not acting on it because you're bought into any of these excuses, we need to hop on a call. Okay, I said this in the beginning. I offer a 30 minute generate income strategy call. We talk about what you've tried so far, where you're getting stuck, what's frustrating you and where you want to go. And if it's a fit, we can talk about what it looks like to work together. And if it's not a fit, you're going to walk away with some very clear action steps for where you need to go next, resources, other people. Whatever I have in my toolkit, it's going to be yours. I don't want you. If you have this business in you and you know you can make a difference, you are robbing the world and robbing the people you care about of that influence, of that impact. And that's just not fair. You can't do that anymore. I'm calling bullshit, okay? So if you want to do this, DM me, I will send you a link to book this call. And in the meantime, stop chickening out. Stop chickening out. Stop being committed to the wrong things. I'm going to be going live. I've committed to this. I'm technically on vacation all next week, but I know myself, and I know I will go a little nuts if I'm not putting stuff out there, because visibility is a big thing for me. So I'm going to be going live about commitments and the things that we get committed to that don't serve us. And I hope you'll watch, and I hope there will be things in there that feel like a really, really sticky band aid is being ripped off of a really hairy part of your body, okay? Because that is the only way that we can actually let go of some of the shit that's holding us back and move forward. And that's what I'm here for. Because we're not being weenies here. We are being brave. We are going for the lives and the businesses that we want so that we can help the people that matter most to us. And if you're game, I'll be here, and I'll be talking about this. So, anyway, um, it is Wednesday. Uh, it is lotto night. And actually, so now the dogs are out of the room. The reason they were so crazy is because on Wednesday nights, we go to buy lotto tickets just because, you know, it's like the wild and crazy thing that we could do during the pandemic that, like, gave us some. Some. Some form of, like, the marking of passing of time, right? It's like, oh, it's Wednesday again. We have to go buy lotto tickets. And the dogs come with us in the car, and literally they. They know the word lotto now. And actually they're at the door right now looking at me, so they know the word lotto. So you literally can't say the word lotto without them just going absolutely nuts. And I actually spelled it out when I was asking if we were gonna be going after I went live. So I said, oh, are we going to do L, O, T, T, O? And they just came barreling through, barking, being crazy, and I should have just kicked them out, but, oh, well, live and learn. I thought they would wind down once they realized we weren't leaving. But anyway. But I didn't let me. It stopped me. I didn't let it be an excuse of not going live. Anyway, for those of you who've joined me, Michelle, Harish, David, thank you for joining commenting. For those of you who've joined, if you commented from another platform and I didn't call you out, it's nothing you did. Sometimes the platform just doesn't show me all comments from all places. So I'm going to go and check and I'm serious, guys, if you are over it, if you are over not making any headway in your business, let's book a call. Just shoot me a dm. I'll send you a link to book. It is going to be a little delayed because I'm taking a vacation from scheduled calls next week. My best friend's going to be in town and with her husband and her and their daughter and I'm so excited to see them. I've been separated from them for the whole pandemic and I normally see them three times a week and normally Michelle is super inspiring. Oh, I'm so glad. I'm so glad and I hope to hear about your business that you have inside you. Harish. This is one of the finest and best content LinkedIn live. Katie McManus oh my God. I'm going to show this comment because I'm really proud of that, of that. Thank you, Harish. I appreciate that. I'm going to print this up and I'm going to hang it on my wall because I love that feedback. Thank you. I don't know if I agree with it, but thank you. I'll take it. But I'm so excited and I'm just going to be just immersed in love with them. But also I one of the cornerstones that I talk about with my clients is do something for your body every day, do something for your mind every day and do something for visibility for your business every day. And it becomes almost pathological when you commit to it. I get extreme anxiety when I don't do all three of those things every day. So, so you'll be seeing me going live throughout my vacation. Anyway, thank you so much for joining. Great to see you all. Oh, hi, Colleen. Sunk costs can be hard to wrap your head around. Oh yeah, the sun cost. And that's actually another, another element that I need to talk about. We invest in things that don't work all the time. If I were still bitter about the Marie Forleo B school not working, I never would have built my business to multiple six figures. I'd still just be grouchy and pissed off that, you know, it was a bo. I shouldn't say that. It wasn't boring. It just wasn't for me. And I'm also really bad at online learning. I shouldn't have even tried. Anyway. Yeah, let's not get hung up on sunk costs. But anyway, I gotta wrap up because the dogs are giving me the death glare that it is time to go get lotto tickets. Keep your fingers crossed that I win, and I will see you all tomorrow. Thank you for joining, and I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and coach. Talk to you soon, everyone. Thanks. Bye.
