Short YouTube conversation (created/uploaded by Katie McManus, Aug 2023) where the speaker lists three primary fears about starting a business: 1) fear of others' judgments (former colleagues/classmates), 2) fear of not having enough money after leaving steady employment, and 3) fear of making mistakes/getting it wrong. The clip encourages acting despite fear ('do it afraid') and includes Katie McManus's self-introduction as a business strategist and money mindset coach who helps ADHD business owners.
When I started my business, here are the three things that I was most afraid of. Number one, what people would think. Specifically, former colleagues, former classmates, anyone that I knew from my previous lives because I was convinced that they'd be like, oh, my God, Katie. She's jumping jobs again. She's doing something new again. Oh, that girl can't stay with anything, can she? Or worse. Wow, she really thinks she can do that. She's not qualified for that. She's not good enough to do that. My second fear was that I wouldn't have enough money to live.
Now, this is a big one for.
Those of us who are jumping from being in corporate to working for ourselves.
Because we're used to getting a reliable paycheck. And when you work for yourself, that doesn't happen for the first couple years.
And number three, that I get it wrong. This was a silly one to be afraid of because I did get it wrong. That's the only thing that's guaranteed when you start a business, is that you're going to get it wrong.
But it was really my inner perfectionist rearing its ugly head, telling me that I was never going to get it perfectly right, which is obviously a standard that even exist. Us business owners, if we want to.
Succeed, then we have to face these fears head on. And the trick is we can't wait for the fear to go away before we get started. We just have to do it afraid. Which is why my battle cry is stop being a weenie. Because weenies don't take action and they don't build successful businesses. And if you're on the journey to building a successful business for yourself and you're facing your fears and you're trying to not be a weenie, then like. And follow me for more tips and tricks on how to get started.
