You are Enough

Katie McManus argues you don't need credentials, a perfect setup, or extra training to start a business now. She pushes back on waiting for readiness, saying willingness and learning while you serve clients matters more than busywork or long hours.
Hello and good evening. Happy Tuesday. Happy November, everyone. I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and leadership coach. We are talking about you being enough right now as you are with everything you have built up till till now. Luna is enough that she is currently working out how to get the ball that went into the tight corner that she's afraid of going into. And she's gotten it. I am purposely doing this from a non professional background because I want to show you that it is okay to do things imperfectly. Okay. And hi, Asher. Good evening. And hi Ricardo. Welcome. Happy, happy evening. That was a weird way to say that. I. So if you haven't joined my Mighty Networks group Brave Biz community, I urge you to DM me right now and ask for the invite. I'm going to send you the link. One of my clients shared in there this incredible video last night that I spent like 40 minutes staying up late watching. And it was this psychologist and I'm forgetting her name. This is where I am terrible at referencing things, but she talks about how so many of us are held back by this belief that we are not enough. That there's some bar of success or some metric that we haven't met yet. And until we reach that in our minds, we can't have everything that we want. We can't go and start a business. We can't get the clients. We can't have an impact on the world. We can't have the love of our lives. We can't, we can't, we can't, we can't. And it's bullshit, guys. It's bullshit. And I just wanted to come to you tonight. I'm gonna share this link somehow on LinkedIn. It's really bad to share links, but I'll put it in Mighty Networks. It is there so you can go there and you can see Jason shared it. But I just wanted to come to you tonight and tell you, you are handsome enough, you are pretty enough, you are thin enough to start a business. And I want to share that. I actually thought that I wasn't thin enough for a very long time before I started my business. There's in. It's not related. I. My, my weight, my body size does not have any impact whatsoever on my business. It's not. Not like I'm modeling a certain size or style of clothing. Okay? But these are the kind of crazy stories that we make up about ourselves, okay? Your home doesn't have to be more perfect. Like, yeah, like wood paneling and like a bad angle. This is Fine. You can start a business with a shitty background. You know, Zoom makes those background things for a reason. Okay, so you don't need a fancier house. You don't need to have, like, a fancier lifestyle. Thank you, Asher. You don't need to have better clothes. You don't have to have, like, a more fun dog. You don't need to have a nicer car. You do not need more expertise. Okay? And I'm talking to you. And you know I'm talking to you because you've just signed up for another certification, haven't you? You've just signed up for another certification. You're going through more training. You're trying to chase that confidence because you believe that once you have just enough training, like you fill up the training cup just enough, you're gonna have all the confidence in the world to go and start your business. No, it doesn't work that way. You have to start the business before you feel ready for it, okay? There's this difference between readiness and willingness, okay? If we wait to feel ready, we're gonna wait our whole fucking lives and we're gonna dive without doing anything. However, if we are willing to just go for it, okay, you are willing to just go for it and see how it goes. That is where magic happens. Hey, Asher, I don't know if I need this. If I can handle this language here. Excuse you, cat person. No, just kidding. I like cats. I'm just a little allergic to them anyway. But you do not need more. You. You. You have your expertise that you have developed over a lifetime. Thank you. And I assume you're talking about me being on point about the cat comment. You don't need anything else there. And by the way, you are going to continue to grow your expertise as you work with clients, okay? That's just how that goes. I think the ball rolled under somewhere. I think we're about to get a real puppy. Tantrum. Temper tantrum. Anyway, what else don't you need? You don't need any more college degrees. You don't need to write a best selling novel before or book before you get started. You actually don't even need a website. People, okay? I know that's a big thing. People are freaked out. They're like, I need high zero. I need a website. I need this, I need that. No, I'm sorry, you don't. You don't. I started my business without a website. Many of my clients start their businesses without websites, okay? We have social media, okay? People can get to know us in a Much easier way. And yes, I just have to show you guys, this is the face. This is the face anyway that I'm dealing with anyway. You don't need a website. You don't need a proper office in your home. I mean any. Give me some things that you think that you need. Give me some things that you think that you need and I will disprove it. Hi, Phil Davis. Great to see you. I always love that color that you're wearing. A website needs to have a purpose. Yeah, absolutely, Asher. So a website needs to have a purpose and too early on it has no real reason. Yeah. So if you are thinking about starting a website, you honestly need to know a bunch of other stuff first. You need to know your niche. You need to really, really understand them. You need to know how your ideal clients talk about their problems. Because when they show up on your website, oh, we're getting comfortable. They need to be like, holy shit, this is to me. That's me. They're describing me. Oh my God, so much trust has been established already. I have to get in touch and talk to this person. Yeah, you don't need lots of office supplies. Absolutely. Nope. Nope. Although I am a huge fan of like completely destroying my home with post its. I actually had to hire, I had to hide all of my post it notes, the little pads for myself because whenever I have them it's like an explosion happened and I, and I write little, little notes as I, as I coach and as I have ideas. None of them make sense. It's like a crazy person is like charting out some crazy idea. I'll, I'll look at notes and be like hamsters and be like, well I thought this is a good idea. At some point I should keep this note just in case the idea comes back to me. And then before I know it, I have like 1700 different post. Its just floating around my apartment. But yeah, to the point. That was a little tangent. And by the way, if you are like that, I probably, I think you probably have adhd. It's an ADHD trait. You should be listening to Business strategy for Winnie ADHDpreneurs, my new podcast. But anyway, just want to round this out, remind you you are enough. You are enough right now with all the experience that you have, with all the things that you don't have, you are enough. And you need to stop being such a huge weenie and just go start your business already, please, for the love of all that is good. Anyway, I'm gonna log off because my dog is about to have A temper tantrum. And Asher, Phil, Saro, and Ricardo, thank you for joining me. And I look forward to going live. I'm gonna be going live again every day this month, so stay tuned. And if there's anything you want me to go live on, send me a message. Give me the topic I need. I need all the inspiration I can take. Okay. I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and leadership coach. Looking forward to seeing you all soon. Asher. I'll fill up my time with productive, busy work rather than impactful activities. Think this comes from wanting to feel accomplished? Yes. Okay. So before I sign off this belief, we come from a model where we're working for other people, right? Where we're expected to clock in for eight hours. We are smart. We know that we can't just go in, do, like, three or four hours of really productive work and then sit around and do nothing. We'd get fired if we did that. So we find ways to train ourselves to do bullshit work. Productive, busy work. And then when we start a business, we tend to carry that over. Don't do that. Don't do that. As a business owner, really, you should be doing five hours or less of work a day. And I mean like, actual, actual work. Because I want you to remember, you also have to make all the decisions about how you're going to be doing the work and what you're going to be doing. And you have to create content, which means you need mental downtime where you're not necessarily moving and working, but you're working. Okay. Your brain can't process all the things that you're going to need to do in your business. If you're filling it up with productive, busy work. Okay. That's honestly just burning you out. But, yeah, thank you for bringing that up, Asher. Yeah, Anyway, thank you anyway. I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and leadership coach. Thank you for joining. I hope to see you all tomorrow and have an Amazing Tuesday and 1st of November. Bye, everyone.
