I can taste yo yo, yo yo I can taste yo, yo, yo I can taste yo yo, yo yo I can taste yo, yo, yo I can taste y. My. Hello and good afternoon everyone. I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and money mindset coach. And I have some exciting news. We are going live on the Facebook's LinkedIn, YouTube and Instagram has finally integrated with Streamyard. How exciting. I'm also over here on my phone on TikTok and hello lovely one. Welcome. And hello. Exotic. We are talking today a little bit about how people tend to be weenies in their business and they out themselves by spinning their wheels on bullshit that does not actually help them get high paying clients. All right, so starting a business is a huge undertaking. It is outside your comfort zone. There's scary stuff that you have to do. You have to put yourself out there. You have to be willing to be bad at some things. And let me tell you, it's not for everyone. There are lots of people out there who say that they want to start a business and they start the business. Hi Vinnie. Hi Corey. Hi Kaylee. Welcome. They start the business and it never goes anywhere. Okay. And they tell themselves that they're working hard. They tell themselves that they're doing all the right things to get this business off the ground and yet it never does. Okay. And there are a few things that go into this, but I just want to acknowledge first and forest, first and foremost, the high sailboat. Steve, great username. Welcome. And hi Jenny. Just want to acknowledge that like if you're starting a business like congratulations, it's really brave to, to come out of the entrepreneurial closet and say, hey everyone, this is what I want to do. Right? Because people are going to have doubts, they're going to have opinions and you're opening yourself up to so many people who care about you and want the best for you, but also may like kind of poo poo your idea. And that's hard, especially when it's something you've held really close to your heart for so long. All right? So it is such a great brave move to make when you're first starting. And also it's really cheap dopamine. All right. We get dopamine from declaring we're going to do the thing. And oftentimes more often than people actually start businesses, people declare I'm starting a business and they get the dopamine hit from it and then they drop it. They never actually move forward and start the business. And hi, love life, joy for welcome. So Today I want to talk about the four typical, like most common ways in which I see people purposely subconsciously spinning their wheels and in a way that looks like you're busy, looks like you're working on the business, but is actually a way of self sabotaging. And I'm going to share these ways and if you feel called out, like, welcome to my world. Hi Jamie. Hey Jamie. John journals. I love that welcome. If you feel called out, you know what? Welcome to my world. In my world, we aren't okay being weenies. We're not okay being afraid and holding ourselves back from doing the truly brave shit. All right, so the stuff that I call you out for today, if you're guilty of it, all right, after this live, you are no longer allowed to do it. All right? You're committing to that. That's what we're all signing up for here. And I am super excited to get into this little design. I love these to be interactive. So if you have any questions or if you're guilty about it and you want to out yourself, then please do in the comments. Normally I do open up like 10 minute like spot coaching through TikTok today I'm a little limited for time, so we're not necessarily going to have time for that. However, I will be going live every day for the next 10 to 12 days. So you'll have your chance. Do not worry. And hi, Andrew Stout. Happy Thursday. Yes, I was very sick for a little while there and I'm still not, not 100%. If, if you guys have like gone through like the different plagues that are going around right now, be gentle with yourself. If you're just recovering, it's like everything that's out there is just so brutal and such a doozy. But yeah, I'm fine. Thank you, Andrew. Okay, so let's talk about this whole strategy that your fear part of your brain, your scared weenie voice is going to try to get you to do because it doesn't actually want you to go outside your comfort zone zone. All right? And it's like, it's almost like that 8 year old whose mom has been on them to clean their room for weeks and weeks and weeks now, right? And like they finally like have kind of, kind of gotten like bullied into a corner and they're like, oh God, I guess I'll have to clean my room now. And the eight year old kind of makes like a half assed attempt. They kick some toys under the bed. You know, they might like pull the sheets up and like Put the blanket on. But then, oh, I don't know how to use the vacuum cleaner. It's really hard. And then they, like, make such, like, a whiny argument about why they can't use the vacuum cleaner. It's too complicated and which button do I press? And they just kind of like, the mom gets frustrated and throws her hands up in the air and just cleans the room. Right? We are still very, very, very much guilty of doing this as adults. The only difference is the stuff that we do this around is stuff that, like, only we can do. It's not like our mom is going to come and start our business for us, all right? Not like our mom's going to come and do the brave shit that we need to do to have a successful business. It's not going to happen. Unless your mom is absolutely incredible and I am kind of jealous of you that she's willing to do all that work for you. Highly unlikely, though. But the thing about this part of our brain is it's part of us. We're smart and capable human beings. We can fool ourselves around so many different things. We can convince ourselves that all the bullshit wheel spinning work is actually going to help us get clients. It's actually going to help us grow our business. Hi, Melanie. Welcome. Now, thank you for the likes. Hello. A few ways in which we do this. We we out ourselves as being weenies in our business, and we spin our wheels on stuff that won't actually get us clients. My favorite one is the information hoarding. Now, I was super guilty of this when I started my business, all right? I signed up for every single online course on how to start a business. I went to every webinar I could get my little, like, digital fingers on that promised to show me how to, like, be on social media or get clients or create a website, whatever. I downloaded every PDF in these courses and, like, free things that I could find. And no kidding, like, I would print them all up and I would organize them and I put them in files and I'd buy, like, really pretty files. I go to, like, the paper source, get the pretty files, I'd organize them, and then I go through and I'd highlight the stuff that I wanted do, and then I create a plan, and then I'd reorganize all the files and I'd reorganize all the papers, and then I'd set them up in different orders, and then I'd be like, cool, like, I'm gonna get to this. But first, let me figure out the plan. And then I'd have all these piles of paper that I would just let get dusty around my room. And then I would reorganize them from time to time. And the longer I had them, the more guilty and behind I felt, because I kept feeling like, oh, my God, I'm not actually working on my business. Because I wasn't. And I convinced myself and hi, Jay. Welcome. I convinced myself that, like, if I could just go back and finish all these things like this growing. Growing to do list of all this, like, backend work for all these courses and these PDFs and these webinars, then I would have a successful business. But, like, it became overwhelming at that point. There was just too much, right? And a lot of it didn't feel like it fit me. Like, it didn't feel like the business that I wanted to build. It didn't feel aligned to who I was. It also didn't really make sense for the type of business I was starting. There was a lot of stuff that just didn't fit. And yet, because it was really the only way I kind of knew how to start a business, I figured, okay, well, this is the work if I want to start a business. Did I get any fucking clients from this? No, of course not. Because that's not how you grow a business. All right? I only really got successful in growing my business when I invested in a coach who would help me figure out my plan to do this. And so if you're guilty of this, if you're an information hoarder, I mean, take a big, deep breath and have compassion for yourself. And also stop bullshitting yourself that this is going to get you clients. It's not. Spending your time filling out papers and doing soul searching on what kind of business you want to start will only help you fill out papers and do soul searching. It's not actually going to help you grow your business. And you may say, okay, well, I have to figure it out before I get out there. I actually argue, no, you do not. You do not need to figure it out. You need to figure out, like, 10%. But after you figure out that 10%, you need to just get out there and start talking about what it is that you do, who you help, and what you help them accomplish. Andrew, you got booted. Oh, no. I'm glad. Welcome back. You will not know if you have a successful business or a success like a potentially successful business unless you go out and you market test it. Okay? That's the only way to understand if what you're Working on is actually going to turn into a viable business, all right? And you can have all the knowledge in an area. You can be like the leading expert. You can like, okay, so for instance, when I started my business, I started off as a dating coach for men. I was convinced because I had dated a lot of guys in San Francisco that like, these guys needed help because they needed help and I was going to be the one to go out and fix them. And I went out and I got eight female clients and, and one dude. And it was very clear that the universe really did not, really did not see me as a dating coach, and especially not for men. And then most of my clients who are women, most of my clients who are women, like, didn't want dating coaching for me, like, they did. That's what they signed up for. But what we ended up working on was executive coaching. Because how they were showing up at work and, and like having bad boundaries with their colleagues and with their bosses, they were really, really like, setting themselves up for failure in their personal lives. It wasn't helpful. So we ended up doing executive coaching, leadership coaching. And then I kind of just kind of evolved into being a leadership coach. I got more training, I set myself up for success, I went out and got clients. I got it wrong every step of the way. It wasn' until people started asking me, like, how I got clients and how I was marketing myself and how I was doing the sales process that I actually realized that's what I want to do. Right? So for you, you do not have to have a perfectly fully baked idea to be able to go out and get clients. You can start going and getting high paying clients from day one if you stop being a weenie about it and you stop information hoarding. All right? Likewise, there's the free session model, all right? And this is really common with coaches and copywriters and who else? And some consultants, depending on what you consult on. Now, a lot of coaching programs and a lot of copywriting programs will teach you as you're learning the skills to just go out and give free sessions or free samples of your work, right? Because really, like, you don't have, like, they don't know how to build businesses, they know how to sell, like coaching training and copywriting training. Oftentimes the people training in these models don't actually know how to build a coaching business or copywriting business, all right? And if they do, they're not going to share it with you because you are now their competition. Now, the free sessions model, like, it feels really Productive because you're going out and you're giving your time away and you're talking to potential clients and you're, you feel like you're proving yourself. You feel like you're showing off how good you are. When in reality the success rate for a free session to turn into a real honest to goodness, high paying client is incredibly low. It's possible, but the amount that you have to do to be able to get a high paying client is like unreasonable. And also, you're not actually training people that this is what you do for work. What you're training people is that this is what you do for your hobby. You're training people. B.C. is this recorded? It actually is recorded. If you follow me over on YouTube or LinkedIn and on Instagram, but on TikTok it won't be. But if you can't watch this right now, you can absolutely go and follow me on those other places and you can see the recording later. But anyway, so free sessions basically just trains everyone, hey, my work is for free. You never have to pay me. You can come and you can pick my brain and I will help you with all the things that you want free, whenever you want, for free. And I don't ever expect to be paid for it. And it also kind of feels like a bait and switch, right? Because you've just given someone this free session, then you're like awkwardly trying to switch the conversation into like, do you want more of this? You should pay me for it. And that feels really inauthentic to many of us who genuinely want to help other people. Most of the humans that I work with who want to start a business, Hi, Maya, welcome. Most of the people that I work with, they're like, yeah, they want money. Yeah, they want to make a lot of money running their business. They want the freedom and the flexibility that comes with entrepreneurship. But mainly they really genuinely want to help other human beings. They want to have an impact. They want to help solve a problem that they see other people having that they know how to fix. If you're like that, it's going to feel really disingenuous to go and like give a free session and then do a bait and switch at the end and say, well, you should sign up for my shit now. It doesn't feel good. Right? So the free sessions model, like, if you're doing this in your business, if you're giving out free samples of your work in whatever format that can be in, and you're not seeing results, of course you're not Seeing results, okay? That's not an effective way to get high paying clients. And if you are really serious about having a successful business, then guess what, to have a business, you need high paying clients. You need paying clients, right? Without those, you do not have a business. You have a very expensive, very time consuming hobby that you're going to carry a lot of shame around with because you're not going to have the result that a business is supposed to have, which is making money. You're going to start thinking that there's something wrong with you and there's not. There's just something wrong with your strategy. All right? So one of the ways I see people being a major weenie in their businesses is they spin their wheels doing free work to try to convince people that they're good when they're already really, really good at what they do and they don't see any results from it. All right? And again, like all this comes from that fear part of our brains that wants to keep us safe, okay? It wants to keep us in our comfort zone, doesn't want us to have to do too many, like, risky things that we could get ridiculed for and rejected for. And a great way to do that. It's just like, hey, free stuff, here you go. Because like, who doesn't want free stuff? You know, I did this very early on and I actually went through before doing this live. And I counted exactly how many free sessions I've given away in the entire history of me starting my business. And just from the booking session system that I set up early on, this is not counting any of the people that I slotted into my, my calendar manually before I set that system up. I've given away probably about 300 sessions in total. From those 300 sessions, do you know how many paying clients I got? And if you want to guess, if you want to put a guess in the chat, please do the, the paying sessions or the paying clients that I got from all of that were 6, 6 out of 300, which is a stupid, really, really, really low success rate. All right? Not good. We don't want that at this point. With my sales strategy, with how I have like my strategy call set up and how I really wean people out along the way, for every four conversations I have with people, I usually end up with one to two clients, which is a really good closing ratio. And that's something that you should all be striving for in your businesses as well. Now, free sessions, okay? So free sessions are a weenie strategy. It's a great way to stay weenie and to keep yourself small and to spin your wheels and just look like you're starting a business, but to not actually be at all successful in the business. The third method that people tend to spin their wheels around and stay weenie is sharing inspo. So, like, this is when you see people on social media and they're sharing, they're sharing like little graphics of inspirational quotes. You know, they're sharing a picture of their dog, they're sharing picture of a sunset and they think, okay, well, anything I post is going to be good. Right? Like, it's going to show people who I am. It's gonna, like, get people aligned to what my beliefs are. They're going to share, like, pictures of books that they're reading. Right? Right. Because they think he will have that in common. All that does is get, you know, the occasional, like, from some friends and nothing else. Right. Because you're trusting your people, your ideal client out there to do too much mental work to go from. Okay, they shared a Brene Brown quote. All right, cool. So let me do a shit ton of research. Let me go down the rabbit hole on this person. Look up their LinkedIn, look at their little bio on Instagram. Let me see what their background is. Okay, cool. They were in hr. Maybe that means that I can hire them as a coach to help change my career. No, they're not going to do that. Angel does. It does help to have engagement. So at least see your sales stuff, though. Absolutely. But that has. You have to have a bigger strategy that gets people in the door. Right. You have to speak to their problems. You have to know who your ideal client is. What I'm talking about here is it's usually the people who haven't done that background work. Great call out, though. They haven't done that, that, that background work to figure out who their ideal client is and what the problems are that they struggle with and what the things they want more than anything is. Right. Usually who I'm talking about, the real weenies who are spinning their wheels are just posting arbitrary content. They haven't decided on a niche. They're really resistant to deciding on a niche even because they're afraid that if they pick a niche, it's going to limit them. They're not going to be able to help as many people. And really, like, this is a great way to waste a bunch of time. Right? Because it's hard to come up with content. It takes time to go into Canva and take a quote and put it in there and make it look nice with the colors that you like and in the font that you want and maybe with a picture in the background that's representative of you. If you aren't making it stupid simple for your audience to understand who you help, what you help them do, and how they can get in touch with you, you're actually not making it easy for anyone to become your client. You're making them go through so much mental work to figure out that they can even hire you that they're never ever going to be able to hire you. They're never going to go through that work. They're going to go on to someone else who makes it a lot easier for them to sign up for their stuff. Right? So, but again, this is the busy work. This is the busy work that we convince ourselves is going to get us clients. I can tell you right now, I have not shared an inspirational quote in four years and I've gotten clients and I've grown my audience and I've actually, I get clients from a fairly small following because I'm so specific about who I help, what their problems are and how they can get in touch with me. Right. So you don't actually need a massive following to be able to get clients online. Right. So that's another thing that, like, I don't really, I didn't really list in here. People are so obsessed and my dog agrees with me right now. People are so obsessed with growing their following because I think if I grow my following, then I'm going to be able to get all the clients of all the people who are following me. Not true. Not true. If you're not intentionally growing a following with people who are your ideal client who have a need and a problem that they want to fix yesterday, if you're not intentionally going after them and converting them as soon as possible, you're just growing an audience that like may or may not want to buy your shit later. I had a client not too long ago who started working with me. She was a meditation teacher for a really long time, very successful at it. And she got trained as a coach and certified as a coach and she wanted to start a coaching business and she thought that she is going to be very easy to take the 100,000 plus followers that she had on Instagram and convert them into paying clients for coaching. And it was the hardest thing in the world. We had to retrain their her entire following and she lost a lot of followers because she changed how she was useful to people. Right. And so it took a long time to kind of rebuild an audience with an audience that actually wanted to buy her coaching. Okay, so how many followers you have really isn't indicative of how successful you're going to be in your business. I've had clients who have reached multiple six figures in their businesses with less than 7,000 followers on LinkedIn and really no followers anywhere else. Okay, it is possible, but you have to do the brave work of picking a niche of market, testing that niche and going after your high paying clients as soon as possible so you understand that there's actually a market for, for it. Now lastly, and this is going to surprise you, okay, so I'm a business strategist, I help my clients do this kind of stuff all the time. And also I'm not a believer in doing this stuff right up front. The one of the ways that we out ourselves as being a weenie and we spin our wheels and we waste our time, money and energy doing shit that's not actually going to get our client, us clients is we spend a lot of time too early on getting business marketing assets like business cards, setting up a website, having a logo made, doing branding, all that stuff before you have a tried and true offer that you know, people your ideal clients will spend big money on. You can't do any of that. Okay? Your website is going to have to be redone a gazillion different times before you have that figured out. Okay? Any business cards you have, like the branding is going to be off your logo. You're going to trash it. I promise you you're going to trash it as soon as you start seeing like that your brand is going in a different direction. It feels really good to like buy business cards. I know I ordered like three different separate packs and I've never used any of them, but I ordered them every time I like quote, unquote split, tried to start my business and it felt really good in the moment. It felt like I was doing something I can't. There was never a single person I got a client from or who became my client because I gave them my business card. Never ever happened. The website I had set up early on never got me a client. And in fact like people didn't even give a fuck about my website. You know, we have this belief that like if we have a website online, it makes us crazy credible. And sure, that probably was more true years and years ago, but social media, the fact that we can like post and people can see the whole history of how long we've been showing up for social media is actually a far better indicator that you are a legit person in the world who does what you say you do and works with people and actually helps them. I always urge my clients, like you're. You're figuring out your ideal client, you're starting to market to them, and you are building a social media following specific to that ideal client, okay? We're worrying about your website a year, two years down the road, right? Because a website has to speak about your ideal client. And you to be able to write that website or have that website created for you, you have to understand your ideal client better than they almost know themselves. And you're not going to be able to do that until you've worked with a bunch of them. All right? So website comes later. Business cards, if you ever need them. In the world of smartphones, we don't really need them. Your logo, branding stuff, like all that stuff comes later, okay? Pick some colors you like, you're gonna change them. Pick a font you like, you're gonna change them. Lean into Canva, create a logo there, you're gonna change it. And do not worry about that stuff right now. It's busy work, okay? It is wheel spinning, busy work that will not get you paying clients. And without paying clients, what do you have? Not a business, but a hobby. Okay? And this, we're not here to start really expensive, time consuming, embarrassing hobbies, right? If you have a hobby, people want to see the results from the hobby. They want to see the thing that you knitted, they want to see the quilt, they want to see the. I know the table that you built, all right? If you have a business that's a hobby and you're not making any money from it, what are you going to have to show? Like, nothing. And you're going to feel so much shame around it, all right? Unless you're independently wealthy and you don't have to make any money and you really enjoy doing that shit. Stop wasting your time on that stuff. Now, if you're guilty of any or all of this, again, I want you to have compassion for yourself, okay? That fear, weenie voice that you have in your head, we. Everyone has that. Except for sociopaths, by the way. So congratulations, you're not a sociopath. I know you're worried about that, but I want you to have compassion for yourself because you're an incredibly smart human being, right? And that's a part of your brain. So it has been so smart to try to trick you into thinking, doing all this stuff. Stuff is actually going to help you start a business. I also want you to have compassion for the fact that you've never done this before. You've never started a business before. So how are you expecting yourself to know every single step that's going to help you get those high paying clients to figure out a profitable niche to create an offer that people actually want to buy? You're not. You're not. Just like you had to go to school, school to learn advanced chemistry. Just like you had to go study abroad in Italy to learn Italian. Just like you, your mom or your dad or maybe your grandparent had to show you how to cook stuff, right? You had to be shown. You had to be shown how to read the recipe. You had to be shown how to do the equation or how to conjugate for the past tense in a foreign language. You didn't figure it out on your own. All right, you need a guide. You need someone who has either done it before and can turn around and show you how to do exactly, step by step, what they did. If it's a fit for you, oftentimes it's not. Or you need a coach who can help you figure out, with some guidance and some training, how you can create a strategy that works for you. And if you want that ladder bit, if you want that guide, that coach who can help you figure out your unique, unique strategy that's not only going to help you create a business that is unique to what you want, a business that is successful in the right way so that you can have the business and the life that you want, that helps you reach your personal goals as well as your money and business goals. That's one of the things that I love doing with my clients. It's why my clients work with me. And I have several different programs that you can sign up for, depending on your budget and how much one on one work you want. If you want to find out about any of these, then I want you to go to either the link in my bio or the link in the description of this live, depending on where you're watching this. And I want you to book a generate income strategy call with me now. This call is 30 minutes. There's no pressure. All right, what we're doing is we're identifying what your big dream is, what the goal is of this business, how you want it to impact the rest of your life, how much money you want it to make you, how you want it to impact your relationships both with your loved ones and with yourself. We're also identifying all the areas in which you feel like you're getting stuck, where you feel like you just don't know what you don't know, or you think there's a massive obstacle. All that. And then if it's a fit for both of us, we can talk about different ways to work together. And again, if you want to book that session, it's called a generate income strategy call. If you're watching this on TikTok, on Instagram or on LinkedIn, then you want to go to the link in my bio and you want to click on it. And then you'll see the option for a generate income strategy call. If you're watching this on YouTube or on Facebook, the link is in the description of this live. So just go ahead and click, click on it there. Otherwise, I am going to be creating a lot of content around the next two, for the next two weeks, kicking you in the ass around, starting your business around, getting real about stuff that will help you actually get high paying clients. Because I know everyone has a goal around New Year, New Me, and I'm going to actually do it for real this time. And this is going to be the year where it all happens. But it's only going to happen if you make it happen, all right? And you're only going to make it happen if you start doing stuff you've never done before. If you get out of your comfort zone, if you light a fire in your belly and you really decide that this is what you want. Side note, for those of you who, like, are saying that you want to run a business and start a business, but you keep not doing it. If you don't want to run a business, no one cares. If you give up, if you, if you genuinely do not want this, if you think this is just the logical next step or like the business gurus have gotten to you and, and you really believe that to be an autonomous, successful person, you have to be a business owner. You do not. You can be an incredibly successful, happy, fulfilled person who works a 9 to 5 job. There's nothing wrong with that. All right? You can spend your free time learning how to become a coach or a copywriter if that's something you're really passionate about learning about. But if you don't actually want to be a business owner, there's nothing wrong with that. This is your life, okay? You are the boss of your own life. You're the CEO. You make all the rules here, all right? But if you do want to start a business, if you do want to have that freedom and flexibility, ability and make honest to goodness really good money having an impact on other people's lives, then there's no more excuses. Okay? You have a resource right in front of you right now who can point you in the direction of either resources to seek out that will help you build it or if you choose to work with me, I can help you do all of that. Anyway, again, I will be going live on this every single day for the next couple of weeks and if you are ready, if you're ready to make this real and you want to book a call with me again, go and click a generate income strategy call now. That's all for me today. Like I said, we are just doing a quick little one today and tomorrow I believe and the day after I will be opening myself up on TikTok to doing 10 minute spot coaching. If you want to hop on with me voice wise we can go through and and help you figure out like one of the problems that's coming up in your business. Like whether it's your niche or if you're afraid of asking for money or if you don't know how to set up your sales, your marketing. We can really delve into that in 10 minutes but today we just don't have time. Anyway, I just want to say a big thank you. Let me see here. To Mohammed, my Mayas. Mohammed, hello. Welcome. Thank you so much for watching. I hope this was super helpful. And to angel and everyone else and to Melanie, everyone else who has been watching over here on TikTok and over on Streamyard, to Andrew who has been watching from LinkedIn and anyone else who's been watching and hasn't been interacting. Also, if you've been commenting and I haven't called you out unless you've been rude to me in the past, which I haven't seen anything come through, I am not ignoring you. The technology just wasn't showing me your comments. Comment. Anyway, I'm Katie McManus, business strategist and money mindset coach for ADHD professional service Providers. Thank you so much for joining and I will see you all tomorrow. Bye.
