Athletes should eat 50-60g of real carbs an hour before training instead of pre-workout supplements. Caffeine occasionally is fine, but carbs are what actually fuel performance.

Should athletes take pre-workout? No, they should be taking carbohydrates before they work out. That's going to give them real energy. Pre-workout's just kind of fake energy. I guess it's okay occasionally, but most pre-workouts are going to have like other stuff in it that athletes don't need. And so it's okay to take some caffeine pre-workout, especially if it's in the morning time, but make sure that you have at least carbohydrates, 50 to 60 grams an hour before your workout. That's going to give you the real energy.
