A sports nutrition coach answers quick questions about athlete fueling. Eat carbs before competition to avoid hitting the wall, never skip breakfast even if you're not hungry, and skip supplements unless you've already nailed sleep and training. Sugar isn't the enemy for athletes.
Should athletes eat carbs before games? Yeah!
Ahaha, yeah! Yes, absolutely. Carbs are the energy to an athlete's gas tank. Without carbs, you hit walls.
Is it okay to skip breakfast if you're not hungry?
No! No, do not skip breakfast if you're not hungry. I get it, not everyone has an appetite in the morning. Do it anyway.
Should athletes take supplements?
Oh yeah! No, if you're too young. So if you haven't hit puberty yet, Or if you haven't dialed in on your sleep, your nutrition, and your training, you don't have no business taking supplements. But yes, they could be beneficial if you are dialed in on your nutrition, training, and sleep. I have a YouTube video that breaks it all down. Go check it out.
Should athletes avoid sugar? N-O.
I got a ton of athletes always saying, I gotta lock in, I gotta cut out all the sugar. Honestly, sugar's probably not the biggest problem out there, especially because natural sugars in the form of maple syrup, honey, fruit, all of those things are so important for an athlete's body. Don't cut out bread. I'm sure you could be moderate with more of the candy stuff, but pfft, I still eat Sour Patch Kids.
