A candy bar and an apple both have about 25g of sugar, but the apple comes with vitamins and fiber while the candy is mostly empty calories. Athletes should pick fruit 95% of the time, though candy works in a pinch during a game when nothing else is available.

This candy has 25 grams of sugar in it. This apple also has about 25 grams of sugar in it. Sugar is not the reason that I would tell you to choose this apple over this candy. Sugars are carbohydrates, but the sugar in here is natural sugars. There's also vitamins in here. The sugar in here has added sugars, which is table sugar that you buy from the store, which yes, has carbs in it, but it doesn't have a whole lot of other nutrients to fuel your body. When you eat an apple, you're giving your body much more than just the energy that you'd get from the sugar or the carbs in either one of these. When you eat these candies, sure, they could give you energy during your workout, but you're really not getting any of the other nutrients your body needs. So for my athletes that I coach, opt for this 95% of the time. But if you were in a pinch and you don't have any fruit around and you're in the middle of your game, your energy is crashing, and there's Sandy around, grab those.
