Kelsey Higginson tells high-school athletes that packing lunch, keeping a bedtime, and showing up to practice are their job, not their parents' or coaches'. At higher levels, no one will hold your hand. Thank the people who support you anyway.

Kelsey Higginson: High school athletes, if you're actually serious about playing at the next level, it's about time to take responsibility for your own success. It is not your mom's job to pack your lunch. It is not your dad's job to make sure you're getting to bed on time. It's not your coach's job to make sure that you're practicing and doing everything that you need to be doing to make it to that next level. It is all about you taking responsibility for your success. So pack the lunch, go to bed on time, do all the things that you know you need to be doing to actually make it to that level. If you are relying on your parents and your coaches to make sure that things are getting done and that you're doing what you need to be doing, I promise you, you will not last a week at the next level. No one's going to be there to hold your hand. Also, side note, be grateful for the people who are supporting you. Go give your mom a hug.
