22 Nov 2025 · 3 min
Kenny Keller walks through how to truly know your aircraft: visual damage checks, maintenance logs, the pilot's operating handbook, and factory preflight procedures. He uses an R44 fresh from overhaul to show what that looks like in practice.

How well do you know the aircraft that you're flying? Yoda time. How well do you know your helicopter? We're kind of revisiting this video from a year ago when I first picked up the R44. And when we got that aircraft back, it just come out of overhaul. So I spent the day with it. I just really took the time to, you know, go over it, look, look for dings, dents, anything leaking, anything loose, get to kind of know the aircraft because as you fly it, you want to know when new things happen to it. One of the things we like to call hangar ash, out of the blue, the helicopters all of a sudden has a ding or a dent. Where did that come from? Who else flew it? Was somebody in the hangar and ran something into it. So the whole point of the Yoda time is spending that time to get to know the aircraft that you're flying. Whether you're at a flight school just renting or you purchased an aircraft. This particular day, I spent the whole entire day just really looking the aircraft over and more than just looking the aircraft over, pulling the pre flight checklist out, going through the factory prescribed checklist, I spent some time with that. I sat down, opened up the maintenance logs, log books. Aircraft had just come through an overhaul, so it was fairly easy. But I still took the time to just go through it page by page, look at everything in the aircraft maintenance record. So I was familiar with everything that was done and what the dates were. And then I also spent some time with the pilot's operating handbook, pulled it out of the aircraft, sat down, reviewed emergencies, reviewed normal procedures, limitations, just spending that time so you can really be comfortable when you're in that aircraft. So again, this can work with any aircraft you're flying. Even if you're at a flight school, they usually have a little downtime here or there where you could go out and just spend some time with the aircraft and really get to know it. And you may or may not know. We're celebrating 12 years since the launch of helicopter airline ground school. We're proud of everything we've done in the past 12 years.
