Game Changer Talks Pt 3

Hello, hello, hello. Welcome to the Game Changer Talks. I'm Kenston Henderson, Chief Empowerment Officer, Live With Life. Listen, I got some incredible people in the space with me today. A few weeks ago, these leaders walked into the Game Changer Public Speaker Boot Camp and said yes to becoming stronger, better, communicators. Did y'all hear me? Stronger, better, confident, wiser. Like, they came ready, all in. And today isn't just another class. Today is about the work that they put into action. And so you're going to hear their stories, you're going to hear about their experiences, and then each Game Changer is going to deliver their 3-minute talk that we worked on during the session. And I know they've probably been tweaking it a little bit since then, since they had more time to sit with it and listen. It's going to be really great. It's about to go down. And, and here's what I want you to remember. Today is not about perfection. So those who are watching, this is not about perfection. This is all about progress. And these individuals, these game-changing women, they did the work, and they're just progressing through becoming from good— going from good to great. And so I'm excited to join them on this journey today. Just want to briefly explain that the boot camp, our boot camp philosophy in the boot camp, it was all about practice, getting feedback, application, and growth. You know, for those who know me, I start every workshop, I start every keynote talk with information without activation is simply a waste of time. And so last time I checked, we don't have time to waste. So these women that have joined me are game changers, and they have put the information into action. So I'm excited. So before we jump in, just to let you know, those who are watching from Atlanta, Georgia, or surrounding areas, the ATL THG Game Changer Public Speaker Bootcamp is going down September 1st. Like, I know the people are going, wow. Before— and before we jump into your talks, I want you to just say a little bit about yourselves. You know, a little bit about your background. Raymar, start us off.

Yeah, so I'm Raymar Reeves, born and raised Cleveland, Ohio. I moved to Columbus about 6 years ago. I had just graduated college and got my degree in human resources. And that has become my passion. I have grown to love, um, just helping our workplaces, creating better workplaces, creating positive workplaces, and then also the human side of HR. So, um, helping people develop their skills, finding the right job for themselves. And yeah, I'm just a big people person.

She like people. She like people, y'all. That's a good thing. That's what it takes for HR professionals. We got to like people, actually. So that's awesome. It's awesome. Welcome, Dr. Rhonda Childs.

Hello. Hello.

So I have spent my career in early childhood. I just started my 25th year in education. And for me, it's about leveling up and seeing what's next, knowing that I still have a lot more to offer as I kind of come around this curve of thinking about how long I've done this work and what I want to do next. And so I felt like this would be another great opportunity. I love supporting my whole school community. I love helping others, and I really believe in the work of early childhood. So that's kind of a little bit about me.

That's awesome. And so both of these women are doing some incredible work, and I can't— I can't keep it to myself. Listen, y'all going to be seeing them a lot more in the future. Whether live online or in person on a stage near you. And so I'm just going to go ahead and speak that now that it's about to happen. Because they're putting in the work. So you put in the work, there's gonna be some results that take place. But I want, I want to ask you both a question, you know, take us back to before the boot camp, like what made you say, I need to work on my communication. What was that that stood out to you? Dr. Rhonda, I'll let you go first.

Sure.

I think for me, and thinking about kind of what I want to do next, I'm interested in starting a consulting business, kind of putting myself out there. I want to do some presentations and conferences, kind of thinking about my next. And so I am comfortable talking around people that I'm with and people that I know, but not necessarily talking in front of strangers. I think we all have that, you know, just being shy or nervous starting out, and so just really wanting to build my confidence as I began this next journey. And I felt like the boot camp would give me that, and it absolutely did.

Raymara? I think after just seeing different trainers and speakers and attending conferences, watching Kenston Kenston Henderson and other speakers, I was like, I want to do that one day. But in the work that I do, I do a lot of trainings and soon-to-be facilitations of workshops. So I think it really just came from, like Dr. Rhonda said, building my confidence, but also gaining tips on how to just be better and speak better in front of different audiences.

That's awesome, that's awesome. Well, listen, here's the thing. Before I had y'all come into the space, I gave you all an assignment, and I think you both did the first assignment. Y'all remember what that first assignment was?

Mm-hmm. So you post a picture, it was your headshot, and it said, I'm attending. Now y'all know I was very intentional with that because I wanted you to say, say it out there. I wanted you to put yourself out there that I'm attending this boot camp. That was for a great reason, to say I'm committed to this. Now there's a second assignment when y'all entered into the space. As soon as y'all walked in the door and I was snapping pictures And then I sent you the next assignment. And it was to say, I showed up. Like, you didn't just say I'm attending, you actually showed up. Because believe it or not, people that have paid, people have said I'm attending, but they didn't show up. And so there's levels in this. And I always say, whenever you're trying to get better, there's going to be some fight. There's going to be some, some comfort or discomfort that's, that's disrupting where you desire to go. There's going to be some barriers that are going to be in the way to try to get you or stop you from getting to that next level. And so that's why I do it. That, that, and that's why I do it. And those who, you know, think about attending the speaker boot camp, just know you will be challenged up until you get there. And even when you're there, you're going to be challenged because those thoughts may creep in. But anyways, when you walked into the room that morning, what were you nervous or unsure about? Or if you were Was there anything you was nervous or unsure about? Listen, even on your drive there, anything come up for you?

I think for me I was just nervous about the unknown, like what are we going to be doing, how is this all gonna, you know, work out. Um, I knew there would probably be a speaking part I would have to do that day, and so I was like thinking about what that would be. Um, but when I walked in the room, and yes, you were snapping pictures and all the things, and but it was very high energy. It was like any nervousness that I felt initially coming in was quickly just confronted and it was like, no, we're here. And everybody was just— it was exciting and upbeat. And so that really did help. But those challenges that you gave us even beforehand, they were definitely challenges even for me.

Thanks for sharing. Raymar, anything come up for you on the way there?

I would resonate with Dr. Rhonda. I think it was the unknown. Not knowing what I was getting myself into and what the day was about to be. But I will say the challenges help because you may have a challenge when you're speaking or be put on the spot. And I think that the surprises you have for us were prepared us for that. In the future.

Yeah, yeah, that's good. Now, Raymar, your— I mean, your journey was a little bit different because I had just spoken with, I think, at your company, and even you had some, some barriers to jump over before even getting to the yes. And it worked out, it still worked out at the end that you made it, but you I think you was like a day before, um, or a couple days before. Yes.

Yep.

And again, you said, I'm committed to this, I want to do it.

And it happened.

So kudos to you, because you, you could have been like, well, you know, it's okay, I'll wait to the next one. Because I hear that, I'll wait to the next one, I'll wait to the next and don't come back. So yeah, kudos, kudos. A little side note, um, me and Dr. Childs, we have some history. Um, for, for those who don't know, we have some history where, um, she was my son's first teacher. And, and it just blows my mind after, you know, all these years. He's now 18 going on 19. And it's a beautiful thing to see when people desire to continuously grow. Like, you stay continuously growing and developing. And that's, that's truly what makes a game changer. And, and, and I love it. And Raymar, so it's like, keep leaning in, keep learning, keep again putting yourself in situations that will continuously keep you in the growth stage. So what happened in the speaker boot camp that you weren't expecting? Was there anything that you were not expecting? I could think of something because I wasn't expecting it either. But that happened in the speaker boot camp that you weren't expecting.

Something. Um, speaking to an object or trying to sell an object out of a mystery bag, I was not expecting that. That was totally unexpected, but I see why it works because like I said earlier, um, you just never know. Like, you never know what will happen or you know, something might come up where you're just asked to speak on the fly and you just got to come up with something like right then and there. Um, so that was definitely something unexpected, I would say.

Yeah, yeah. Hold on, you— I put you— you were the— ah, now listen, it's been a few weeks and now my brain is dusting off, but you two were the two who accepted a super challenge of craziness.

Yes.

Dr. Rhonda, any— any—

yeah, so for me, that was the most unexpected when I think about all the different challenges that we went through. Um, they were definitely fun and engaging, but the last— the super challenge of having to deliver your speech, um, in the midst of distractions, and a lot of crazy distractions. And it's like, um, people are coming up to you in your face, they're talking through your presentation, they're throwing things.

Wait, don't wait, don't tell them too much, Dr. Rhonda. Like, but what did that do to you as you were talking your speech, telling us your speech?

Sure. So we were encouraged to keep going. That was like, keep going no matter what happens during this, just keep going. And so all these things were happening, and I wanted to laugh at some of those things that were happening at the time. I wanted to walk away and be like, I'm done, I don't even want to continue this speech. Um, but I kept going. And so that just really also helped just build the confidence. You never know what kind of group you're going to be in. Hopefully not one as, you know, those actors that day were doing their whole acting. Um, but it was definitely a great experience. And then it kind of broke up like, what's the worst that could happen, right? You're going to fumble over some words, you may not say everything perfectly, but at the end of the day, keep going. You'll get your message out there. And so the people who are going to tune in and listen, they'll have your back. And the other ones, well, Just ignore those distractions.

Look, so I'm just gonna let y'all know that was not planned at all. That was not in my—

my—

but I love impromptu things, and it just adds more to the experience. And so there is a, I would say, a method to the madness, if you will. But it was all intentional because you just never know what's going to happen in the space. Again, whether it's one-to-one or one-to-many, I've seen so many things, I've heard so many sounds that didn't make sense. I've seen so many people's facial expressions that would really trip you up or could trip you up. But I want you all to feel that and get that, that experience. Now, of course, add some, some more dramaticness to it. However, the more dramaticness we added, it just gets you ready for, for what's next for you. And because it could be simultaneous noises and, and people's facial expressions, and just, it could be the buzzing of the, the sound system, it could be just technical glitches that take place. And, and we didn't— one of the things that we didn't cover that I'll add, or it'll might, it might be in a professional speaking boot camp, was the presentation, again, malfunctioning, the technical difficulties happening in real time, and you have no control. You have your clicker. And your microphone is still on. You have got to keep moving forward. Right. And I remember doing a presentation. And again, I look behind me. And my, my slides are off the fonts, the positioning things are off. And I couldn't let the people know in front of me that how I'm feeling inside is that this is a hot mess. I couldn't let them, I couldn't let them know, I couldn't let them see it. I can let them feel it. I just had to keep moving forward. And so that's, you know, that's why the distractions take place, because it surely was distracting to me. But I had to keep moving forward. And so I'm so glad that you all passed the test. Super test. Now, people here, when they hear public speaking, you know, there's a natural— I want to say, not even say natural, but there tends to be some type of tension when people hear public speaking, like it is still the number one fear that people have is being able to speak in public. And why do you think that is?

I would say judgment. I think people are afraid of being judged or afraid to not be perfect. I think as a society, people strive to be perfect and fear judgment from other people.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

I definitely echo those sentiments from Amara. I think it's also about comfort, um, invisibility, not wanting to put yourself out there, um for fear of those things, that judgment, the criticism. Interestingly, I think people have a lot more confidence behind the screens, and you know, that's just the way society has kind of transformed and shaped us. But when you're able to speak confidently about something that you're passionate about or something that you're knowledgeable about, how freeing that can be for somebody else, how, you know, you don't have to quiet your story or, you know, be shut down, how that there is a freedom and a power in being able to get over that discomfort because you something important and powerful to share.

Yeah. Do y'all remember the, the FEAR acronym I gave you? Put you on a test. This is a test to see if they retain the information.

False Evidence Appearing Real.

Okay, that's one of them. That's one of them. What was the second one?

Something about Philip. I don't have my notes in front of me.

No, base everything in rise. Yes, like so, right? Because here's the thing, false evidence appearing real, it's a real thing for people, and that fear will stop— it has stopped so many people, including myself, from doing the things that I know I need to do. And public speaking is one of those things. The fear of the unknown, the fear of if I mess up, the fear of what are people thinking about me. Even now, that's a thing. Even when I go live, what are they thinking about? What are those? Those little things try to creep in, but you got to say shut up, right? I talk about, you know, I gave you the story of when I went on, when I spoke on a panel, and there was different fears that arose or thoughts that arose before I even got onto the stage. That what am I doing? And then that goes into imposter syndrome, right? There's people that have imposter syndrome or deal with imposter syndrome that I don't deserve this, or I don't deserve to be speaking on this stage. I want Wait, nonsense. And those things can, you know, really destabilize you and cause you not to go through. And so we look at the other fear, face everything and rise, because it allows us to do just that, is face everything and rise. And so was there anything that you learned about yourself during, or that you reflected on after the boot camp took place? Anything that you, you learned about yourself even during the boot camp?

But I would say what stuck with me was the DIP theory and utilizing that to tell your story and how powerful storytelling can be to relate to information that you're trying to teach or speaking about. I think utilizing that just helps people connect better to the information because you're using real life events or something relatable, personable that people probably are dealing with or have went through.

Yeah, yeah, that's good. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, I think for me it was just putting myself in the space and then realizing, oh, it wasn't that bad. I didn't know it and now I do, and it's like, oh, okay, yeah, I can do that. It wasn't that bad. Now I've continued to have to, like, you know, when I'm in situations, say, right, remember, Rhonda, this isn't that bad. Or, you know, um, so it's—

you—

it's a continual work, but just still that understanding that whatever it was that I was most afraid of wasn't, wasn't going to take me out. It wasn't going to destroy me.

It was— it wasn't the end of life, like, no. And it was really taking that pressure off, uh, that helps us keep moving forward. All right, we've talked about the work. Now you're about to see the work into action. And so these two game-changer women are going to deliver their 3-minute talks, and it's about to go down. And so we didn't talk about it, but I'm going to put Raymara Reeves onto the stage first, and then we'll go from there. So, Raymar, welcome to the stage.

Hi everyone again. Um, so I have a question for everyone. Um, how many of you have ever felt misunderstood unheard, or like you didn't truly belong. I imagine many of us can relate to that feeling. Today, I am an HR professional who is passionate about creating workplaces where people feel valued, included, and connected. I am inclusion and belonging certified and Bergman Method certified, and I have dedicated my career to fostering positive workplace cultures centered around belonging, community, and emotional intelligence. I am also passionate about training and development because I believe people grow when they feel seen, heard, and supported. That passion extends beyond the workplace through Big Brother Big Sisters, I mentor youth because I know firsthand how powerful it can be to have someone who listens, encourages, and believes in you. For me, those experiences began early in life. I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, surrounded by people from many different backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives. Diversity was simply a part of everyday life. But when my family moved to Brunswick, Ohio, I found myself in a community that was nearly 97% white and only 3% other races. Suddenly I felt different. I experienced discrimination at school and later in the workplace. Those experiences affected more than my confidence. They contributed to social challenges, self-doubt, and depression. I grew up in an environment where emotions weren't always welcomed. I was often told that I was too emotional or that my feelings didn't matter. For a long time, I believed that something was wrong with me, but over time, I discovered something powerful. Being emotional isn't a weakness. When paired with self-awareness and communication skills, it becomes emotional intelligence. That realization changed my life. I'm expanding into speaking spaces because I want to help more people experience what I have learned. Whether in organizations or communities, my mission is simple: to help people have conversations that matter. The conversations that build trust, the conversations that create understanding, in the conversations that help people move from division to connection. I'm currently building a business focused on fostering connection and community through difficult but meaningful conversations, because I believe when people feel heard, they are more likely to listen. And when we truly listen to one another, we create an environment where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. My journey has taught me that our struggles do not have to define us. They can prepare us, they can equip us, and they can become the very thing that allows us to positively impact the lives of others. Thanks for listening, everyone.

I mean, you did it, you did it. I heard— listen, I heard what we working on in class. I heard those inflections. You had the smile, you had the presence. And so you worked on it, you worked on it. Your voice was clear and strong and confident. So no, great job, great job.

All right, she's ready, y'all. Welcome to the stage, Dr. Rhonda.

All right, how many of you have ever felt called to do something only to be told you didn't have what it takes? That question has shaped the trajectory of my entire career. For more than two decades My work has been dedicated to early childhood education. I've served as a teacher and early childhood coordinator, and now as the principal of an all pre-K school. Along the way, I earned a doctorate in educational leadership and later completed a certificate in early childhood leadership from Harvard because I always believed in doing what it takes to be my best. What's interesting is that leadership wasn't something I initially pursued. It was something others saw in me before I saw it in myself. Mentors encouraged me to step into leadership because they believed I had something to offer. I took the leap. But as I began pursuing leadership opportunities, I encountered something I hadn't expected. Although my experience in early childhood was valued, it often wasn't viewed as enough preparation for administrative positions. That was difficult because I knew the complexity, expertise, and intentionality required to lead high-quality early childhood programs. Instead of allowing that experience to stop me, I continued to grow. I invested in my education, I expanded my leadership skills, and I kept saying yes to opportunities to serve. And the further I moved into my career, the more I noticed a paradox. The same early childhood expertise that had once been questioned was now the expertise people sought from me when they needed guidance on child development, play-based learning, and developmentally appropriate practice. At the same time, I began to learn— notice a larger pattern. Important decisions about our youngest learners were often being made by leaders who had never been formally prepared to lead early childhood. That realization slowly began to change everything. For too long, early childhood has been treated as the beginning of school, but not the beginning of leadership. That's when I realized my work wasn't just to lead one exceptional school. It was to elevate early childhood leadership by helping principals and school leaders lead with confidence, clarity, and compassion. Because when we equip leaders with the knowledge, support, and systems they need, we don't just change leadership. We change classrooms, we change schools, and ultimately we change the lives of children. I've learned that sometimes the very thing that makes you question your path is the very thing that reveals your purpose. And today my purpose is clear: to ensure that early childhood leadership is no longer an afterthought but a priority. Because every young child deserves a leader who understands the wonder of early childhood, and every leader deserves the knowledge and support to lead them well. Thank you.

I feel good.

Good. Listen, I mean, those who are watching, this is these are their stories. And I always say, who better to tell their stories than that person? And, you know, Dr. Rhonda, I appreciate you for again, leaning in. You didn't have to come to the public speaker boot camp, but you chose to. And, and again, I think it's just really going to help for, you know, where you're going next. And as you continue to develop yourself, it's just going to help even more. And so just turning to more, uh, you're communicating more, more with even more with adults, um, and I can see that. And so, but I don't think there's much for you to really, to really change, um, you know, your energy, your, your ease of being able to connect with people, it's going to shine through, um, because here's the thing, you've been working with kids. And if you've been able to, like, work with kids, you are ready for adults. Like, I'm just gonna put that out. I'm just gonna say, like, I don't know anybody out there who's ever worked with young people. And if you can work with young people, if you can teach young people, you can keep their attention and actually help them learn. That's, that's a gift. Like, that, that's a really well-worked gift. Because they don't hold back on their feedback. I'm gonna tell you that. They will not hold back. But no, congrats, you both, on completing this 3-minute talk. Like, y'all did it. And I, I want to ask you, who would you say, now that you've gone through the Public Speaker Boot Camp, who would you say needs to be in this space for the next ones?

I think anyone who honestly just wants to continue investing in themselves and level up in whatever area they are currently in that the public Speak and Bootcamp is a great move. It allows you to just get professional tips and feedback, as well as also be around the energy of others who are doing the same work. And again, Raymara talked about it earlier, the power of storytelling and all that that brings allows you— whether you're having a simple conversation with somebody at the grocery store or you're using this in your everyday job or you're using it at home with your family. Um, being able to speak and communicate is so necessary. So I think it's for anybody, anybody who wants to elevate wherever they are in whatever season or position that they're currently in could benefit from this experience.

That's awesome, that's awesome. Amar, any— anyone who else should be in this space?

I will piggyback off of Dr. Rhonda, but I will also say anyone interested in being a motivational speaker or doing any type of public speaking, or even if you're in leadership positions and, you know, you're speaking in, in the communities or you're speaking at conferences, um, definitely take the time because Nobody's perfect. And we can always, you know, improve our skill set. But I think the Game Changer Public Speaker Boot Camp definitely allows you to practice. And practice makes perfect, right?

Listen, it make better.

Say that.

It make a lot better because if you don't do it, not gonna get better. Oh, that's good. That's good. So, so y'all, y'all heard it from them. Who needs to be in this space? I always, always encourage, you know, managers, leaders. If you are an entrepreneur, especially if you are an entrepreneur, you need to be in this space, like, because you are the face of your business because you're the only one. So being able to, to speak to what your business is all about and what you wanted to accomplish, that's going— it's going to be on you. It's going to be on you. So be in the room, executives. I've been working with a few executive leaders that want to enhance their communication skills. Why? Because they better— they want to communicate at their best to their team members. So I want to say it's for everybody. It is for everybody who desires to become better in communication. That's that. So think about this, both of you. Somebody's watching this, somebody's watching the replay, they're thinking, Kenston Henderson CSP EPIC Experiences EPIC Experiences, I know I need this but I'm nervous. What will you— what can you tell them?

Don't be nervous. I would say don't be nervous. Um, we all had a little bit of nerves going into this, but I will say— I'm not gonna promise you, but I will say after you leave, you will feel a little bit less nervous, and you will leave with some tips and tricks on how to settle those nerves. Um, because that is something that we did talk about in the Game Changer Public Speaking Bootcamp. So just show up for yourself. I would say, you know, get over those nerves at first, show up for yourself, and then see how you feel afterwards.

It's good.

I definitely echo that. I feel like the first part is just show up. Once you get there, it's going to be very, very fun and engaging. If you know Kenston, he is very, very lively, and so he is definitely going to bring all of the energy and all those things, and those activities will help alleviate some of the nerves that you feel, and you'll realize and understand that the nerves are natural, um, but the things that you do and learn to overcome that and the confidence that you'll build throughout the different things you learn will definitely help and keep you motivated. So I just encourage you to show up. I think it'll be well worth it, and you'll surprise yourself.

That's awesome, that's awesome. So the The thing that comes to mind when somebody is wondering whether they're going to take this next step into the Game Changer Public Speaker Bootcamp and give up their entire day— is it worth the investment? So do you all feel that you got a return on your investment?

I absolutely do feel that I got a return on my investment. I was one of the ones you mentioned at the beginning. I initially signed up for a previous class, um, couldn't make it. I knew that I couldn't give my full attention, um, at the time that it was being offered, and I was like, no, hold my spot. Um, so I really did show back up. So I was one of the ones that initially had to, um, excuse myself, but I did show back up and come again. And it was at a time when I knew my schedule was clearer. It's the summer, I'm not working right now, so I was able to give my full attention to the full day without having those distractions from my job during that time. So I would say definitely it is worth the investment. Being there all day, it didn't feel like you were there all day. It was really a fun day, and when I left, I was just really— I felt rejuvenated, and I got some nice gifts. So That was nice.

Yeah, I agree. Um, it was definitely worth it. Um, and I think it's just showing up for yourself is always worth it. But with the Game Changer Public Speaking Boot Camp, like Dr. Rhonda said, it's very engaging and it's, it's very interactive. So it's not like Kenston Henderson CSP EPIC Experiences talking to you. No, you're putting in the work, um, and I think anytime you're putting in the work while also getting information and being able to utilize what you're being taught, um, is always a good investment.

Yeah, it's a boot camp. It's a boot camp, folks, and in boot camp we get to work. Like we really get to work on the things that you're going to be learning. And no, I will not be talking all the time. So I know people are excited when they hear no, but last one, last one. Anytime you are faced with the decision of, again, becoming more, you will be challenged. But I want you to think about every time you've leveled up personally and professionally, you had to go through those challenges and you said— you still said yes to it.
